2023 was a tumultuous year for television, but amid the turmoil was some standout horror programming that celebrates the genre’s versatility, from “The Fall of the House of Usher” to “Swarm.”
The television landscape grows increasingly proliferated as streaming services continue to spawn and transform like hordes of zombies. There have never been more places to consume content, which in itself can be both exciting and overwhelming for audiences. Horror has been warmly embraced by television and the prospect of a graphic genre program is no longer the gambit that it used to be. Programming from across the world collectively taps into the universal fears that get under the audience’s skin, many of which become even more intense through extended binge-watch sessions. There’s something for everyone when it comes to 2023’s eclectic horror series, whether it’s killer dolls in the White House, inspired reimaginings of Edgar Allan Poe,...

Typically, when it comes to choosing a “Rick and Morty” episode to submit for Emmys consideration, it’s a struggle to find a non-canon-heavy show that can “really blow an Emmy voter’s mind but still be palatable to anybody,” executive producer Steve Levy told TheWrap.
“That’s the hope at least,” he said.
Season 6’s “Night Family” met those parameters, an installment that simultaneously manages to hone on this family’s complex dynamics, serve as a pitch-perfect horror homage and push the animation “to a whole new level” without requiring hours of backstory to understand. But there’s another reason why this episode stands as an especially smart selection for the sci-fi-series. On nearly every creative level, “Night Family” showcases how Dan Harmon’s Adult Swim can adapt and has evolved.

"Rick and Morty" is a series that's suffused with references to numerous films, TV shows, books, and other forms of pop culture. After all, the show itself began life as co-creator Justin Roiland's skewed riff on "Back to the Future," and co-creator Dan Harmon's previous series as showrunner, "Community," was continually pushing the envelope when it came to parodying and homaging films.
Yet the fact that "Rick and Morty" is now in its sixth season means that the show has to keep digging deeper for homages and references that not only haven't been done to death, but that the series itself hasn't attempted yet. Despite the show's science fiction premise, "Rick and Morty" is no stranger to horror, with episodes like season 1's "Rick Potion No. 9," season 2's "Total Rickall" and season 4's "Promortyus" all riffing on horror creatures and tropes.
Yet those episodes involve sci-fi/horror concepts,...

Rick and Morty Season 5 Episode 3
It seems like Rob Schrab is nostalgic for the era of kids’ cartoons from my childhood. I say my childhood, because Schrab—longtime collaborator and friend of Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon—is over a decade older than me, but he loves to parody cartoons from when I was growing up. He had a major role doing a Cobra Commander impression in the animated episode of Harmon’s sitcom Community, “G.I. Jeff” (which he also directed) and now he’s written this episode, “A Rickconvenient Mort,” half of which is a parody of the nineties’ environmentalist cartoon, Captain Planet and the Planeteers.
I really didn’t enjoy “G.I. Jeff.” It was a bizarre, confused episode with humor that didn’t work unless you had a fondness for the eighties (and/or early nineties)’ cartoon series,...

The length of time between seasons of Adult Swim’s “Rick and Morty” has been something of a running joke among fans. It was, for example, nearly two and a half years between Season 3 and Season 4, which finished its run in May this year. As we wait for a whole lot more to come from Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, whose beloved series has many episodes remaining as part of a package deal with Cartoon Network, they’re also here to reassure fans that it’s coming soon.
As reported by Syfy Wire out of a PaleyFest virtual conversation, Harmon said that despite Covid’s impact on the industry and digital workflow Season 5 is fully on schedule and has actually benefited from production setbacks.
“We’re more on schedule than we’ve ever been,” he said, adding that it’s easier to get the animated “Rick and Morty” off the...

Spooky times require spooky TV shows. AMC’s streaming horror service Shudder is doing its part by ordering scripts for Creepshow season 3. The news was first reported by Variety.
While this does not technically constitute an official renewal yet, networks and streaming services, particularly smaller ones like Shudder, generally aren’t in the habit of ordering scripts for full series that they don’t intend on filming. The reasoning for this atypical season 3 renewal announcement is likely the same reasoning for just about everything right now: the coronavirus outbreak. Creepshow season 2 was set to begin production in March in Atlanta but was forced to delay due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. Shudder just wanted to get rolling on season 3 while season 2 remained in stasis.
“Although season 2 is on pause while we wait until it’s safe to go into production, we wanted to use the time to start work on...

Solar Opposites Episode 5
Something that’s always nice is when separate sitcom plots are still tied together thematically. “The Lavatic Reactor” is one such episode, centered around education, as Terry and Korvo enroll in a junior college and Jesse and Yumyulack attend what they believe to be summer school. There’s a third, smaller plot about Tim and the other shrunken humans trapped in Yumyulack’s wall and their attempt to steal food from the Duke, the self-appointed leader of said wall, but this plot is not about education, which makes it lame.
No, that’s not really why the wall subplot is weak, though I suppose it’s part of the problem in that it’s a bit slight and seems to have been inserted into the episode mostly to remind us the Mad Max wall stuff is still ongoing. Unlike the first...

Welcome back, my friends, to the show that never ends. Horror has always been cyclical, and if that’s true, we have lucked out to be swirling around in a lot of good stuff. The best thing about 2019 in horror has been the variety: if you wanted a straight-up slasher, it was there. Ghosts? Covered as well. Creature features? Check. But in the world of horror, enough is never enough, so I’m going to plow through a whole whack of things I’ve liked and loved this past year.

The Stephen King-inspired anthology series Creepshow has been granted a second season by horror streamer Shudder. While great to hear, this isn’t too surprising, as the show’s been a solid performer for the network, wrapping its first season on Halloween. Overseen by The Walking Dead‘s Greg Nicotero, Creepshow‘s commitment to old-school special effects have made it a treat for Shudder subscribers, with Deadline reporting that roughly half of the platform’s audience have seen at least one episode.
The original George A. Romero-directed Creepshow movie was a labor of love for Romero and King, and while later sequels offered diminishing returns (Creepshow 3 is particularly worth avoiding), its success set up a wave of horror anthologies in the 1980s and 1990s.
Commenting on the impact Creepshow has had on Shudder, the service’s Gm Craig Engler had this to say:

Shudder's Creepshow reboot is bringing the '80s horror anthology back to life and the set has the bloodstains to prove it.
On the calendar behind Greg Nicotero’s desk, every day, from Jan. 7, 2019 through to today, March 28, is marked with a red “X.” The lines are big and emphatic, as though the writer put every last bit of his energy into striking them.
“It seems like yesterday was January 7th and now it's the end of March,” Nicotero says, sinking into a chair in front of the calendar. “There's been no time to even pick anything up.”
Production happens in a near constant state on the Creepshow set and the chaos on the cavernous Atlanta soundstage reflects it. Outside of Nicotero’s office, hallways are littered with rubber monsters and gory props. Two lifeless Nazi soldier dolls greet the production staff arriving on set, one bald and scarred,...

I love watch horror movies and shows that are both scary and fun, and it looks like Greg Nicotero’s upcoming anthology series Creepshow is going to give us a show where the audience is going to have a blast being scared!
This series is a revival of the 1980s horror anthology films from George Romero and Stephen King. As a big fan of those films, and now, after seeing some actually footage teasing these 12 new stories, I couldn’t be more psyched for the show! I love what I’m seeing here, and you can watch it for yourself below and let us know what you think!
We have some information on all twelve of the stories that will be told during the first season and they all sound pretty interesting and great. I’ve listed them again below in case you missed them or want to read through them again.

Golly gee, when was the last time there was a good horror show on TV? I guess The Terror probably counts (I’m assuming it’s scary due to its on-the-nose title). Otherwise, most reality TV is pretty terrifying. Zing! Got’em!
But I might also need to get Shudder soon, because they have a Creepshow series coming out. And ya know what? It looks like a lot of stylized, practical, spooky fun. Thank you, Comic-Con, for bringing us more gory good news, and showing us how much enjoyment we’ll get out of being scared by the upcoming anthology show.
In addition to being based off the films that featured horror titans Stephen King and George Romero, may his soul rest in peace, the cast looks to be stacked, too. We have splatter veterans Jeffrey Combs and Tobin Bell, and even Adrienne Barbeau. There’s also Giancarlo Esposito, Bruce Davison,...

I’ve got a new poster and photo to share with you today for Greg Nicotero’s upcoming Creepshow horror anthology series. This is a revival of the 1980s horror anthology films from George Romero and Stephen King. As a fan of those films, I’m pretty pumped up about what this new series will deliver.
Some information was recently released on all twelve of the stories that will be told during the first season and they all sound pretty crazy and intriguing. I’ve listed them again below in case you missed them or want to read through them again.

Wubba lubba dub dub, eh? Where my Harmonians out there? I love Community and, back in college, Rick and Morty was a grand old time, especially watching it stone-cold sober, as I’ve never done drugs. Drugs are bad, but Adult Swim’s cartoon output is great. Fans, however, can be troublesome, as season 3 of the hit series was besmirched by aggressive folks doing dumb shit in the name of a TV show.
However, this time around, Adult Swim seems to have a handle on fan expectations, as they’ve posted images from the still-in-the-works season online for all to see. This precedes the panel that the showrunners are having at the upcoming 2019 San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, building hype to unseen proportions. The fourth season is due out this fall, so the big advertising push would start now, logically.

One of the many reasons George A. Romero's Creepshow continues to thrill and chill horror fans more than 35 years after its initial release is thanks to the makeup effects by Tom Savini (who also played one of the movie's garbagemen in the memorable wraparound segment). It's fitting, then, that Savini has been announced as the director of one of the episodes of Shudder's new Creepshow series, based on a story by Joe Hill, who played Billy in the film's wraparound segment.
Savini will direct an episode adaptation of Joe Hill's "By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain," working from a screenplay by Jason Ciaramella.
Along with Savini's return to the Creepshow franchise, Shudder also announced a casting update for the series, revealing that David Arquette, Tricia Helfer, and Dana Gould have joined the cast. Read the official press release below for more information, and stay tuned to Daily Dead...

Dan Harmon is making up for lost time. A little more than five months ahead of “Rick and Morty’s” long-awaited return, the series co-creator is already mapping out ideas for Season 5.
In a pair of Instagram posts over the weekend, Harmon and fellow “Rick and Morty” writer Rob Schrab covered a table with post-it notes with ideas for the coming season. Some of the gems include “bark-nado,” “The People’s (Basketball) Court,” “Detachable Fingers (or Toes),” “Women Made of Fish,” “Trench Coat Made of Dreams” and “Rick Discovers the 11th Commandment.”
Before you get too excited, Harmon said these were not actual episodes… yet. But they all feel in-line with the humor that “Rick & Morty” fans have grown to love (and luckily do not feature any Szechuan Sauce).
