Lauderhill (USA), Aug 13 (Ians) Riding high on Romario Shepherd’s 4-31 West Indies restricted India to 165/9 in the winner-takes-all fifth and final T20I match at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground, here on Sunday.
While Suryakumar Yadav was the top scorer for India with his 61 off 45, it was Axar Patel’s little cameo of 13 off 10 which took India through to a fighting total of 165/9 in 20 overs.
India got off to a poor start as Akeal Hosein removed both openers — Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill — in quick succession, leaving India 17/2 within three overs.
Then, Suryakumar and Tilak Verma staged a fightback as the former changed the momentum by elegantly hitting the final ball of the fifth over straight back over the bowler’s head for a tremendous six. Following that, Tilak Varma turned up the heat by striking three boundaries and a six off Alzarri Joseph in the sixth over,...

Lauderhill, Aug 11 (Ians) After losing the first two T20I matches to the West Indies, India kept the five-game series alive with a resounding seven-wicket win in the third game, thanks to superlative efforts from vice-captain Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma.
Now with the series action shifting to Lauderhill in Florida, USA, for the last two matches, India will be hoping that other batters step up to make significant contributions in the fourth T20I happening on Saturday.
West Indies are still leading the series 2-1, owing to India’s batting barring Varma not coming to the party. Though Suryakumar got back his groove in the third T20I, India would require the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, captain Hardik Pandya and the rest of the lower-order batters to step up and play a huge role in run-making.

Chasing 153 for victory, the hosts surpassed the total in 18.5 overs with just two wickets in hand. Tilak Varma (51 runs) emerged India’s top scorer while the in-form Nicholas Pooran led the West Indies’ scoring charts with 67 runs.
However, India had their moments to seize back the initiative, especially after spinner Yuzvendra Chahal’s 16th over resulted in the fall of three wickets. Chahal was preparing to come on and bowl the 18th over as well with the hosts still needing 21 runs for victory. But, surprisingly pacer Arshdeep Singh was handed the ball and he ended up giving away nine runs.

Georgetown (Guyana), Aug 5 (Ians) After losing the T20I series narrowly by four runs to the West Indies in Trinidad, India will be aiming to put up a better show in the batting department when they face West Indies in the second T20I at the Providence Stadium here on Sunday.
The pitch was slow and not easy to bat at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad, but young left-handed batter Tilak Varma shone brightly on debut. After scintillating performances in Ipl 2022 and 2023 as well as in domestic cricket took him to the national team, Varma slammed two beautiful sixes on facing his first three balls in international cricket.

Bridgetown (Barbados), July 29 (Ians) Ishan Kishan (55) struck his second successive half-century but India failed to capitalise on a good start on a difficult pitch that offered variable bounce to be all out for 181 in 40.5 overs in the second Odi against West Indies here on Saturday.
In a match that was twice interrupted by rain but did not lose any overs, India made a hash of things after the visitors were off to a good start thanks to opener Ishan Kishan, who struck a run-a-ball 55, his second after the 52 in the first match that India won.
Kishan and Shubman Gill raised 90 runs for the opening wicket but the West Indies capitalised on the juice offered by the wicket that was slow but offered bounce too. Romario Shepherd (3-37) and Gudakesh Motie (3-36) were the best West Indies bowlers while Alzerri Joseph claimed 2-35 in seven overs. The West Indies also fielded well,...

Bridgetown (Barbados), July 29 (Ians) Play resumed on Saturday after a 30-minute rain interruption during the second Odi between India and West Indies at Kensington Oval, here. However, no overs were lost because of the interruption.
The rain came pouring down at the midway stage of India’s innings after the visitors were off to a good start thanks to opener Ishan Kishan, who struck a half-century.
But disaster struck India just before the rain interruption when the visitors lost two wickets off successive deliveries, slumping to 113/5 in the 25th over.
Stand-in skipper Hardik Pandya (7), leading the side as Rohit Sharma and senior batter Virat Kohli have been rested, tried to pull a bouncer around shoulder height from Jayden Seales but got it straight to Brandon King at midwicket. Hardik Pandya, who was leading the side as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been rested, said Axar Patel and Sanju Samson come into playing eleven as India look to add to their victory in the opening Odi.
“We were looking to bat first. Wicket was up and down in the first half of the last game, so we want to see how they go here,” said Pandya.

West Indies also made two changes, bringing in Alzarri Joseph and Keacy Carty coming in place of Rovman Powell and Oshane Thomas.

Bridgetown, July 28 (Ians) During their five-wicket win over West Indies in the Odi series opener at Kensington Oval, India rejigged their batting line-up in a bid to experiment ahead of the World Cup in a modest chase of 115. That experiment saw Virat Kohli not batting at all, with Shardul Thakur batting at six while captain Rohit Sharma chose to come at seven.
For India, apart from presenting them a chance to seal the Odi series, it is also another opportunity for them to experiment from the second Odi at the same venue yet again and see where various players stand in the lead-up to the mega event.
Ishan Kishan did well as an opener in top-scoring with 52, but could bat in middle-order or maybe India can give a look-in to Sanju Samson. Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja showed left-arm spin mastery to bamboozle West Indies, but whether the visitors give...

Port of Spain, July 24 (Ians) In the ongoing tour of the West Indies, Mohammed Siraj had to step up to be the leader of the Indian fast-bowling attack. On Fay Four, where there was nothing for the bowlers to extract from a slow pitch at Queen’s Park Oval, Siraj returned with his career-best figures of five for 60 to give India a healthy 183-run lead.
Siraj’s scalps for his second five-wicket haul in Tests included Joshua da Silva, Jason Holder, Alzarri Joseph, Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel. Siraj mixed his inswingers, outswingers and wobble-seam deliveries to good effect with the second new ball to bring a swift end to the West Indies innings.
The fast bowler pointed out that it was not easy for him to succeed on a placid pitch. “First of all, this performance was really good because it’s not easy to take a five-fer on such a flat wicket.

Port of Spain, July 24 (Ians) India came out with guns blazing in their second innings but rain played spoilsport and halted their progress, reducing the session to just three overs as India reached 118/2 at Tea on the fourth day of the second Test.
After forcing an early lunch, the rain started soon as the batsmen were ready to get into the field for the afternoon session. Though the rain stopped soon, the wet ground stopped the play further and kept the players inside. Eventually, when play finally started, India crossed 100 runs off 75 balls on the second ball of the 13th over.
However, India suffered a setback when they lost opener Yashasvi Jaiswal in the same over, falling to a slower delivery that landed at the good length spot outside off-stump. Jaiswal attempted a slog-sweep across the line but the bounce got him and the top edge ballooned and keeper Joshua Da Silva...

Port of Spain, July 21 (Ians) Star batter Virat Kohli struck his 76th international hundred (121) on his 500th match while all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja hit a fine half-century (61) respectively before getting out to put India in driver’s seat as visitors were 373/6 at lunch on Day 2 of the second Test against the West Indies at Queen’s Park Oval, here on Friday.
India lost the wickets of Kohli and Jadeja in the first session and scored 85 runs in 24 overs as West Indies looked flat despite taking the second new ball at the start of the day.
Resuming India’s innings at 288/2, Kohli brought up his 29th Test century in the 71st over by hitting a boundary off Shannon Gabriel. Soon after, Jadeja also brought up his 19th Test fifty.

Port of Spain, July 20 (Ians) India captain Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal slammed fifties with immaculate ease to put the visitors’ in drivers’ seat by racing to 121 for no loss in 26 overs at lunch on the opening day of second Test at Queen’s Park Oval, here on Thursday.
Put into bat first, Rohit and Jaiswal were unbeaten on 63 and 52 respectively as many were baffled over West Indies decision to bowl first on a slow, docile pitch, especially with the bowling line-up lacking the required penetration and discipline.
Rohit began with an authoritative pull for six off a harmless Kemar Roach delivery, while Jaiswal also pulled Alzarri Joseph for six apart from getting an outside edge on cut for two fours.
Shannon Gabriel’s introduction did little to stop run-flow as Rohit played a sublime drive, before pulling for back-to-back fours, followed by Jaiswal cutting off back foot through for another boundary.

Roseau (Dominica), July 12 (Ians) Debutant left-handed batter Alick Athanaze showed some resistance and was looking like putting a price on his wicket before falling for 47 as India pocketed another session in their kitty by reducing West Indies to 137/8 in 58 overs at Tea on Day 1 of first Test at Windsor Park, here on Wednesday.
After picking four wickets in the first session, India picked four more wickets, two of which were taken by Ravichandran Ashwin, while conceding only 69 runs. The visitors’ are now just two wickets away to bowl out West Indies for a below-par total.
The hosts’ below-par batting effort was caused mainly by some reckless shot selection, including of an assured, calm and composed looking Athanaze. The batters were perishing when trying to attack on deliveries without showing adequate patience, leaving a lot left to be desired.

Left-handed batters Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ishan Kishan are making their Test debuts for India. While Jaiswal will open the batting alongside India captain Rohit Sharma, Kishan will bat in the middle-order and be the wicketkeeper too.
For the West Indies, left-handed batter and local lad Alick Athanaze is making his Test debut.
“Surface is generally dry, but there’s moisture in the first hour. We had a ten-day camp in Antigua. (Brian) Lara (performance mentor) was there, that was good for our young batters. We had seen ourselves in good positions in the last (two Wtc) cycles. What we need is consistency and putting it together. Want the boys to be positive,” said Brathwaite at the toss.

Ipl 2023 Final: In battle between Mentor Dhoni and protege Hardik, Csk face Gujarat Titans (preview)
Ahmedabad, May 27 (Ians) In a battle between mentor Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his protege Hardik Pandya, the four times champions Chennai Super Kings (Csk) will lock horns with defending champions Gujarat Titans in the all-important final of the Indian Premier League (Ipl) 2023 at Narendra Modi Stadium, here on Sunday.
Interestingly both these sides — Csk and Gt — had kicked off the season at the same venue, so Ipl 2023 has come full circle.
The Titans had beaten Csk in the opening game. However, earlier this week, Csk levelled the score with a comprehensive win in Qualifier 1 in Chennai. And now, it’s time for the final showdown between the two teams, which are built around the same philosophy.
If one observes closely, both these teams keep things simple, back their players, and create a relaxed team environment. Even Hardik Pandya has praised the Csk team environment recently but on the field, he will look to trump Dhoni.

It’s important to learn the lessons from your losses, rectify and don’t repeat it. You do make mistakes in such a long tournament. God has been kind with our injuries. Same team as the last game,” Gt skipper Hardik Pandya said at the toss.

“Motie was excellent in the Test matches in Zimbabwe earlier this year, where he took 19 wickets, and we anticipate similar conditions for the qualifiers. We believe he will again relish the chance to bowl in those conditions. He is also a capable batsman and good in the outfield.”

Lucknow, April 22 (Ians) Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to bat first against Lucknow Super Giants at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium on Saturday.
A win for Lucknow at their home ground will take them to the top of the points table. Lucknow have won two of their three games at home in Ipl 2023. The pitch for Saturday’s match is the one used by Lucknow for their game against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 7, where they won by five wickets.
After winning the toss, Hardik said fast-bowler Alzarri Joseph misses out and left-arm wrist spinner Noor Ahmad comes into the playing eleven. “Looks like a slow track, want to get the best out of it. There is no time to test our batters now.”
“On this wicket, the better option is to bat first. We’re not worried about our record while chasing.

Ahmedabad, April 17 (Ians) Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya’s bowling changes, especially in the death overs in the match against Rajasthan Royals are being questioned with the likes of Virender Sehwag, Amol Muzumdar and Tom Moody feeling the Titans skipper erred by not giving another over to Mohit Sharma.
Mohit Sharma had bowled two overs for just seven runs in the second half of the Rajasthan Royals’ chase of a 178-run target. Skipper Sanju Samson was looking to break the shackles as Rajasthan Royals were recovering from a precarious 66/4 after 12 overs needing 112 runs to win from 48 balls. Sanju Samson and Shimron Hetmyer guided them to victory with some superb batting against Rashid Khan and Mohammed Shami in the last couple of overs to guide them to three wickets victory.

Ahmedabad, April 16 (Ians) Rajasthan Royals were literally in a no man’s land at 66/4 in 12 overs in their pursuit of chasing down 178 against a strong Gujarat Titans bowling attack, who bowled 26 dot balls in the first six overs.
From there, captain Sanju Samson took 20 runs off Rashid Khan in the 13th over to eventually make 60 while Shimron Hetmyer smashed a whirlwind unbeaten 56 off just 26 balls to give Rajasthan an improbable three-wicket victory in 23rd match of the Ipl 2023, here on Sunday.
The stunning heist also means that Rajasthan retain their top spot on the points table with eight points. Samson and Hetmyer added a crucial stand of 59 runs off 27 balls, followed by the latter adding 47 runs off 20 deliveries with Dhruv Jurel to complete the chase with four balls to spare.

Mohali, April 14 (Ians) Opener Shubman Gill notched up his second half-century of Ipl 2023 while fast bowler Mohit Sharma marked his comeback in the tournament with a stellar spell to lead the way for Gujarat Titans to beat Punjab Kings by six wickets at the Is Bindra Pca Stadium on Thursday.
Thursday’s victory is Gujarat’s third win of the ongoing season and takes them to third place on the points table, while Punjab were handed their second loss of the tournament. Mohit, a previous Purple Cap winner in the Ipl, was a net bowler for Gujarat in clinching their maiden title last year.

Mohali, April 13 (Ians) Hardik Pandya returned to captain Gujarat Titans as the defending champions won the toss and elected to bowl first against Punjab Kings at the Is Bindra Pca Stadium on Thursday.
Both teams are into this game after facing defeats in their last match. While Gujarat lost to Kolkata Knight Riders as Rinku Singh hit five sixes on the last five balls, Punjab went down to Sunrisers Hyderabad despite captain Shikhar Dhawan making 99 not out in a batting masterclass.
“Just looks like a good wicket, and from whatever I’ve seen it’s good to chase. Was a one-in-a-million defeat (to Kolkata). We are the kind of team that takes it with a smile. Played good cricket until that last over. It happens. It’s a fresh game. We’ll come out and smile, and throw some punches,” said Hardik, who missed the game against Kolkata due to being unwell.

Ipl 2023: Bowlers, batters give Gujarat Titans clinical six-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals (Ltd.
On a pitch which had plenty of pace and bounce, Shami and Rashid picked 3-41 and 3-31 respectively while Alzarri Joseph dazzled with 2/29. In chasing 163, Sudharsan and Shankar played some good solid cricket in their 53-run partnership for the fourth wicket after losing three wickets in power-play.
The duo looked for boundaries while also rotating the strike at the same time. It meant that they were able to keep up with the run rate through risk-free cricket before Shankar fell in the 14th over.
With 46 needed off the last five overs, it wa’ anyone’s game till Gujarat tilted in their favour. David Miller pulled Mukesh Kumar for six, and then lofted over wide long-on for the same result. He then ended the 16th over with a powerful drive through cover for four, as 20 runs came off it.
