- She received a bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Wisconsin and a law degree from the Antioch School of Law.
- She was active in social and environmental causes as a public-interest lawyer. She worked in the feminist movement as a member of NOW, as well as the civil rights movement. She is best known for her role in the lawsuit against Kerr-McGee in the case of Karen Silkwood, the nuclear power plant technician and whistle-blower.
