Hong Sang-soo’s first film starring Isabelle Huppert, In Another Country, counts as one of the more lightweight entries in the Korean auteur’s oeuvre. Compare it to Claire’s Camera, their second collaboration, and it suddenly looks like Inland Empire. That’s not to say Claire’s Camera is bad or unenjoyable. It has plenty of the charm characteristic of Hong’s cinema, and there are far worse ways to spend 69 minutes than in the company of his characters as they amble through sunny Cannes idly chatting about love and life, disappointment and fulfillment. At the same time, knowing the director is capable of achieving so much more with even less – one of his greatest films, Hill of Freedom, is similarly scaled and two minutes shorter – it’s difficult not to end up frustrated by what feels like a rushed and ultimately undercooked work.

After bringing one of the year’s best films so far to Berlinale with On the Beach at Night Alone, Hong Sang-soo is returning to Cannes with not only his second of 2017, but his third as well. Premiering as a Special Screening is a film he actually shot at the festival, Claire’s Camera, which stars Isabelle Huppert and Kim Min-hee, following a part-time high school teacher and writer. Also starring Shahira Fahmy and Jung Jin-young, one can see the first images above and below.
As for his other film, The Day After, it will be premiering in competition at the festival. Also starring Kim Min-hee, along with Kwon Hae-hyo and Kim Sae-byeok, not much is known about the project, but judging from the first still, it looks to be in black-and-white. Check out the images below and return for our reviews of both films in the coming weeks.

Next Entertainment World recently released the first trailer for the upcoming Korean thriller “Pandora” and it looks like the film will bring gripping action and intense drama.
The trailer begins and we hear sirens. The nuclear power plant is in red alert as the smoke looms and rises to terrorize the city. Villages are destroyed. Bodies mount. The firefighters are scrambling and the government admits…they can’t do anything to help. The whole city cries in chaos.
From the same producers behind critically acclaimed and commercial hit zombie film “Train to Busan”, “Pandora” tells the inspiring story of how ordinary people struggle to survive after a catastrophic nuclear disaster.
Award-winning filmmaker Park Jung-woo, known for his science fiction horror hit “Deranged” (2012), directs the star-studded cast led by Kim Nam-gil (“No Regret” (2006) “Portrait of a Beauty” (2008), “Pirates” (2014)). Nam-gil plays Jae-Hyeok, a man who fights to save his family against all odds.

Word of a new Agnès Varda project is hardly commonplace — it’s sometimes unclear if she’s even still working — so this tentative announcement gets more attention than most others. Said project, per Variety, is “a celebration of images, still and moving, and the way they are shown, shared and exhibited,” and likely an autobiographical celebration at that: as co-directed by the Bansky-like French photographer Jr, the picture “will focus on faces, encounters, huge images related to people and mostly the growth of an unlikely friendship between a 33 year old youngster and an 88 year old lady.” (I’ll save you the Wikipedia search and mental arithmetic by noting that, yes, Jr is 33 and Varda is 88.)
Varda is immediately forthcoming about the project, saying, “As my life draws to a close, I find myself wanting to see ever more faces, to film or photograph them, to keep them in images if not in my memory.
