Inspired by, but definitely not closely adapted from, Amy Chozick’s 2018 book Chasing Hillary, The Girls on the Bus may be on Max, but it’s a throwback to a certain type of broad, big-hearted, semi-topical dramedy that TV fans used to associate with The WB.
As a female-forward workplace buddy comedy with soapy undertones, The Girls on the Bus (Chozick and The Vampire Diaries mastermind Julie Plec are credited as creators) is quite good — the casting is strong, the character dynamics appealing. As a show about journalism, The Girls on the Bus is decent — smart about a lot of things, dumb about others, but not disproportionately. As a political thriller, The Girls on the Bus is mostly a crock.
It comes together as a whole that’s not really a guilty pleasure — for the millionth time, stop being guilty about the things you like — but definitely one where you...

Re-entry is always harder than takeoff. After the Writers Guild of America’s longest yard, we made our deal, got something on almost everything we asked for (despite the pundits’ professional naysaying), and had our celebration at the Palladium — complete with a shout out from guild leadership to Fake Carol. Then it was pencils up: back to work for those lucky enough to still have it — and hustling to find work for the rest of us.
To be honest, it’s been a little weird. Not because we’re face to face with executives again: The creative executives seem to have been on our side for the most part. Frankly, a lot of them are scared that ChatGPT’s coming for their jobs, too. (Hmm, maybe they should consider… a union? Everyone’s doing it!) Now it might be different for Bob Iger and Ted Sarandos, but I don’t...

Since the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas militants against Israel, it’s become near-impossible to avoid images of the carnage and devastation that has befallen Israel and the Palestinians living in the besieged Gaza Strip. Online, it’s already difficult to sift through the barrage of misinformation, recycled footage from past conflicts, and contradictory narratives to ascertain what is really happening on the ground — and the emerging technology of artificial intelligence is adding a whole new layer of complexity to the problem.

A parody of rock biopics that celebrates its subject by completely trashing the facts of his life and career, Eric Appel’s Weird: The Al Yankovic Story is relentlessly silly, wholesome at heart and so stuffed with cameos it might give you the idea that a couple of generations of cool people love this guy.
Co-written by the artist (who also costars as a fickle record exec), it’s a kindred spirit to his songs without being so gag-hungry it forgets how to tell a story. Just like his music, it’s not for everybody, and to be sure, there will be few audiences as hungrily receptive as the one at its Midnight Madness Toronto premiere. But it brought the house down here, and should be a boon to the underdog Roku Channel when it arrives there in November.
Finally making good on...

If nothing else, hopefully “The Rehearsal” throws into sharp relief the Herculean feat that is modern film and television production design. It’s not just on mystery box-fueled genre fare where every single element of every single space is tailored, has intention, and is telling a story about the main character through the physical details surrounding them. From the books on their shelves to the shape of their chairs, all that information offers us a window into what the people onscreen value, how they see themselves, and how they prefer to move through the world.
Whether it’s the flight deck of Battlestar Galactica or the elevators of the Arconia, sets sometimes take on a character of their own that silently shapes how we see the protagonists. On reality TV, there’s an inverse phenomenon going on, where the subjects and the camera make stages out of spaces designed to look naturalistic.
