There is gunplay aplenty in this Spanish thriller about a young renegade who can create illusions with his mind – with some neat touches amid the mayhem
Directed by Daniel Benmayor, this Spanish mashup of Inception, Scanners, The Fury and The Matrix follows 18-year-old Ian (Carlos Scholz), whose parents were Perceivers: a species of cold war spy chemically engineered to be able to project illusions with their minds. Most were killed off in a cull known as the Disinfection, which makes Ian, who has inherited his parents’ powers, especially valuable. Strolling into a bank brandishing a scrap of paper, he can wordlessly persuade the teller that it is a cheque ready to be cashed. Pointing his finger, he makes an adversary fall to the ground from a nonexistent bullet wound.
No wonder sinister forces are out to exploit the lad. Swooping to his rescue is Adriana (Lela Loren), an operative from...

"You don't have as much control as you think you have!" Amazon's Prime Video has revealed the official trailer for a Spanish mystery fantasy action thriller titled Awareness, a film by Spanish filmmaker Daniel Benmayor. This premiered in Spain earlier this year, and will be available for streaming worldwide in October. A teenager lives with his father on the outskirts of modern society and runs small scams with his ability to generate visual illusions upon unsuspecting victims. Things get complicated when his powers get out of control in public, with a mysterious agency coming after him. As he tries to evade capture, Ian discovers he's not the only person with these powers and that his whole life has been a lie. This sounds like a very similar premise to Freaks (2018). Awareness stars Carlos Scholz, Pedro Alonso, María Pedraza, Óscar Jaenada, and Lela Loren. This one also reminds me of Hypnotic,...

"With her power there's no telling what he can do." Lionsgate has finally launched the first full trailer for Chaos Walking, the long-delayed, epic new sci-fi action movie from Doug Liman, that has also undergone reshoots after originally being set to open in 2019. Based on a book, the sci-fi film is set in a dystopian world where there are no women and all living creatures can hear each others' thoughts in a stream of images, words, and sounds called Noise. Which is visualized in a clever way in this. With the sudden appearance of a mysterious girl named Viola Eade, played by Daisy Ridley, they both end up on a journey of discovery that will change them both forever. Chaos Walking stars Tom Holland as Todd, along with a fabulous main cast including Ridley as well as Mads Mikkelsen, Demián Bichir, Cynthia Erivo, Nick Jonas, David Oyelowo, Kurt Sutter, and Óscar Jaenada.

Miami — Breaking barriers, Netflix is preparing to unleash “Xtremo,” billed as one of Spain’s first full-on action thriller movies, starring Oscar Jaenada and action specialist Teo García.
A Netflix Original Film directed by Daniel Benmayor, “Xtremo” also marks the first production of Showrunner Films, the new production company set up by Spanish sales agent Vicente Canales and partner Julieta Videla.
“’Xtremo’ was born as a play to create action cinema made here in Spain. A film designed for the global market but with the character and originality of Spanish cinema,” Canales said in a press release.
For Netflix it’s certainly a gamble in bringing a new genre to a territory, but the bet is a calculated one as action thriller films have performed well for the service internationally. In 2019, the Michael Bay, Ryan Reynolds vehicle “6 Underground” was a massive success around the world.
Although the film only premiered on Dec.

Madrid — A leading example of transatlantic Spanish-language co-production, historical drama “Hernán” – co-produced by Mexico’s Dopamine, part of Mexico’s Salinas Group in collaboration with Spain’s Onza Entertainment – stands out as the largest, most ambitious high-end series featured at this year’s Mip Cancun market, as noted by Netflix’s former head of international originals Erik Barmack, now growing his own company, Wild Sheep Content.
“I always ask: Are people thinking big enough? I think sometimes a [lack of] confidence is holding people back from taking huge swings,” Barmack said in his keynote, urging Spanish-language producers to have “ambition,” and citing “Hernán” as something exceptional.
Limited to not just its character-driven narrative nor its empire-spanning scale, the ambition of “Hernán” is immediately recognizable as a game-changer on the Latin American TV scene, backed by what Dopamine says is the largest budget for any non-studio series in the region under a multi-platform simultaneous release.

When we last saw John Rambo — Vietnam vet, social pariah, savior of POWs and stoic killing machine — he was saving missionaries and mercenaries in war-torn Burma at the end of Bush II’s second term. Then our man returned home to Arizona, walking down the dusty path to the front door of the Rambo family ranch and, presumably, towards a sense of peace. That was then; this is now. Rambo: Last Blood, the maybe, possibly, could-be final chapter of the franchise (though does anything besides scores of nameless, faceless bad guys ever really die?...

Home has always been an abstract concept for John Rambo, which is what the last scene of 2008’s otherwise expendable “Rambo” sequel finally gave the iconic Sylvester Stallone character: a moment when this unsettled Vietnam War survivor, looking very much the worse for wear, lumbers up to a mailbox bearing the character’s surname. At last, somewhere in Arizona, this dutybound embodiment of American military might had found his way back to the family ranch.

Never has Spanish TV drama production been so vibrant.
Over the past 12 months, “La Casa de Papel” (“Money Heist”) and “Elite” became global sensations via Netflix, building on the success of previous series that demonstrated a never-seen-before appetite for Spanish originals.
Netflix is opening the doors of its first European production hub in Madrid in early April and preparing five new Spanish Originals; Movistar + aims to produce 15 series a year; HBO and Amazon are increasing production.
Meanwhile, top free-to-air TV broadcasters Mediaset España and Atresmedia are re-inventing themselves as studios, producing content for third-party operators, and taking advantage of their production expertise.
The boom is opening up more ambitious and flexible business production models, such as co-production.
“Many of our projects, from inception, have co-production partners,” says Telefonica’s Movistar + president, Sergio Oslé. “It keeps us international from the get-go and helps us distribute, and also reach some scale and share know-how.

"Then while in a restaurant after an unsuccessful day of shooting, Toby's superior, the 'Boss' (Skarsgård), recommends he find inspiration and brings over a 'Gypsy' (Óscar Jaenada) who sells him an old DVD of 'The Man Who Killed Don Quixote', an amateur black-and-white film that Toby coincidentally wrote and directed ten years before as a student.
"Nostalgic, Toby watches the film, so enthralled that he barely notices the seductions of the Boss's wife 'Jacqui' (Kurylenko) in her hotel room. When the Boss returns, Toby frantically escapes, taking the DVD..."

Madrid — Sports streamer Dazn dazzled on Wednesday in Madrid, officially launching in Spain, its eighth territory worldwide, with rights to Spain of MotoGP, Premiere League and Euro League basketball, a thumping promo at a press conference, a beaming MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez on stage, and the double-backed announcements that Brazilian soccer icon Neymar had signed on as a Dazn global ambassador and ex-Chelsea, Real Madrid and Man U.’s José Mourinho, the most acerbic of soccer managers, as a commentator.
But can Dazn actually make money?
History is not on its side. “The market for broadcasting top-notch sporting events, which means soccer in Europe, and national leagues, looks like one where the winner takes all, because the winner creates synergies bundling [sports] with entertainment content and sustaining the interest of the whole family,” said François Godard, at Enders Analysis, citing the fate of sports rights contenders such as Setanta Sports,...

"Sancho!" Screen Media + Fathom have revealed the brand new official Us trailer for Terry Gilliam's long-awaited The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, the film he's been trying to make for decades with doomed productions and other setbacks delaying it over and over. Gilliam's The Man Who Killed Don Quixote finally premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last summer, where it was also threatened by a lawsuit that almost stopped it from showing in France at all. But it played, and it's now getting a release in the Us as well. The film is about an advertising executive who jumps back & forth in time between 21st century London and 17th century La Mancha, where Don Quixote mistakes him for Sancho Panza. Starring Jonathan Pryce as Don Quixote, and Adam Driver as Toby, with a cast including Olga Kurylenko, Stellan Skarsgård, Rossy de Palma, Óscar Jaenada, Jordi Mollà, Jason Watkins, and Sergi López.

Santiago, Chile — Dissatisfied with the way that females are represented in horror films, a group of filmmakers from Latin America and Spain have teamed up to create a new narrative of five short stories – each playing on a common theme, and each with a unique cast of actors and directors attached – in “28,” an in-development project presented as part of this week’s Santiago Lab at the Santiago Intl. Film Festival (Sanfic).
Created with participation from five countries – Chile, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil and Spain – with an eye on picking up a sixth contributor from the U.S., the stories in “28” will play off the themes of the 28-day female cycle, paralleled with the four-week lunar cycle.
The segments will range from classic slasher-thriller to sci-fi musical to psychological drama, and each story feature a female lead meant to break the mold of the “damsel in distress” trope so common in the horror genre.

"We shall have such great adventures together." Another trailer has debuted for Terry Gilliam's long-lost, long-awaited, highly anticipated film The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. It's currently set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, however the festival released a strongly-worded statement today (a coincidence but timing makes sense) about the legal battle it's stuck in - and that it might not premiere if a judge decides otherwise. This new trailer follows the first teaser trailer a few weeks ago, and it contains footage of Driver filming his version of a Quixote movie as well. This film is about an advertising executive who jumps back & forth in time between 21st century London and 17th century La Mancha, where Don Quixote mistakes him for Sancho. "Blasphemy!" It's finally, finally, finally, finally here!! Can you believe it?! The very first international trailer for Terry Gilliam's The Man Who Killed Don Quixote has arrived out of nowhere, just a week before the Cannes Film Festival line-up announcement. Word is the film will play the festival, but until it's official, this is our first look. Terry Gilliam has been trying to make The Man Who Killed Don Quixote for decades, (in)famously starting production and then shutting down once before in 2000 with Johnny Depp. Now he's finally finished it and it's ready for release this year. Rejoice! The film is about an advertising executive who jumps back & forth in time between 21st century London and 17th century La Mancha, where Don Quixote mistakes him for Sancho Panza. This is our first official photo from director Terry Gilliam's The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. After all that Gilliam has gone through in trying to make this film over the years, it's crazy that it actually got made. This first photo features Adam Driver (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) as Toby and Jonathan Pryce (Pirate of the Caribbean) in the role of Don Quixote.
The Man Who Killed Don Quixote tells the story of a deluded old man who is convinced he is Don Quixote, and who mistakes Toby, an advertising executive, for his trusty squire, Sancho Panza. The pair embark on a bizarre journey, jumping back and forth in time between the 21st and magical 17th century. Gradually, like the infamous knight himself, Toby becomes consumed by the illusory world and unable to determine his dreams from reality. The tale culminates in a phantasmagorical and emotional finale...

The action comedy genre is one that rarely breeds positive results. Comedy so often thrives in subtlety, driven by the characters. When you add action into the narrative, there’s an obligation for laughs to derive from overstated set pieces, absurd situations our calamitous protagonists have gotten themselves into yet again – and what transpires is contrivance, and a lot of it. Jonathan Levine’s Snatched, unfortunately, fails to buck the trend.
Amy Schumer plays Emily Middleton (no relationship to the Princess, believe me) – who is dumped by her boyfriend, leaving her alone in her already booked, forthcoming vacation to Ecuador. No friend seems to fancy the trip, so she settles for her last resort, managing to convince her mother Linda (Goldie Hawn) to do something adventurous for a change, and join her. The pair set off, and while the latter comes equipped with a dog whistle for safety measures,...

Ever since the release of Trainwreck established Amy Schumer as a big screen comedy star, it has been a waiting game to find out how she would fair as an A list leading lady, following that hit. Schumer has already conquered the small screen with Inside Amy Schumer, but now she tries cinemas again with Snatched. It’s out today and represents the best option in theaters this week. Keep in mind, it’s not amazing, but it’s solidly entertaining and more than amusing enough to recommend. Plus, Schumer has gotten Goldie Hawn back on screens, which is an absolute delight. If you’re a fan of either, you should be in for a treat. The film is an action comedy that wants to be as much an adventure as it is a laugh riot. Emily Middleton (Schumer) is the complete opposite of her mother Linda Middleton (Hawn). In...

It’s a big holiday weekend, so Hollywood has concocted a new flick that’s a perfect match for that very special day. It’s an ode to mothers everywhere, but it’s not sugary and sappy, no hearts and flowers here. That’s because it’s the sophomore feature film from Amy Schumer, so it’s more than a touch tart and spicy. Two years ago the superstar of stand-up and cable TV (the critical and ratings darling of Comedy Central) stormed the multiplex with the hit comedy romance (which she wrote) Trainwreck. For this follow-up , she’s decided to share the screen (top billing, above the title in the ads) with a movie veteran. Of course, she had terrific co-stars in her previous flick (Bill Hader, future Oscar-winner Brie Larson and NBA icon LeBron James, for gosh sake). But this time Amy’s part of a team similar...

There have been complaints in early reviews about Snatched being disposable junk. Huh? Let's back up a minute. The comedy stars Goldie Hawn and Amy Schumer as mom and daughter – those words alone should mean something for film enthusiasts, and not just because Mother's Day weekend. Schumer, the baby-faced bad girl of 2.0 comedy, is teaming up with Hawn, a laugh-inducing golden girl since she won an Oscar for her breakthrough role in 1969's Cactus Flower. So, yes, we'll allow that this female raunch-com is built on a script by Katie Dippold (The Heat,...

Good supporting characters are a godsend for any comedy, but what happens when these side-pawns overshadow leading roles? Such is the dilemma throughout Snatched. Writer Katie Dippold’s on-page strength resides in quick-jab punchlines. A wacky adventurer who speaks in catch phrases played by Christopher Meloni? Belly laughs aplenty. Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn fleeing aimlessly from armed kidnappers and lush rainforest peril? There are moments, but most are expected and lacking emotional highlights. Although, less conversations are peppered with overt vulgarity than expected (a norm in today’s mainstream comedy world) – praise where praise is deserved? Not exactly perfection, but Jonathan Levine avoids directing an entirely juvenile Vacation-gone-deadly.
Schumer stars as Emily Middleton, a recently dumped mimosa-chugger with no personal direction. Hawn plays her divorced, cat-loving mother. Despite their differences (and relationship), Linda (Hawn) agrees to be Emily’s plus-one for an Ecuadorian getaway. It’s non-refundable and no...

"Why did I ever let you talk me into this?" Fox has unveiled a second official trailer for the summer comedy Snatched, starring Goldie Hawn and Amy Schumer as mother and daughter who get kidnapped when they take a trip to Ecuador. This new trailer features even more wacky footage than the first red band trailer, but I'm still not that excited about this at all. As fun as it looks in some spots, it just seems so Hollywood absurd, not my favorite kind of comedy to watch. The full cast includes Joan Cusack, Ike Barinholtz, Wanda Sykes, Christopher Meloni, Randall Park, Wanda Sykes, Óscar Jaenada, as well as Colin Quinn. I expect this will make tons of money in the summer, it's definitely going to pull in some big crowds. "You're going to miss this whole trip. Everything shouldn't be so scary." 20th Century Fox has debuted the first red band trailer for Snatched, the new comedy directed by Jonathan Levine (of The Wackness, 50/50, The Night Before). Goldie Hawn and Amy Schumer stars as mother and daughter who decide to take a trip together down to Ecuador. However, once they get there they end up kidnapped (aka "snatched") and must work together to figure out how to escape. The cast includes Joan Cusack, Ike Barinholtz, Wanda Sykes, Christopher Meloni, Randall Park, Wanda Sykes, Óscar Jaenada and Colin Quinn. This looks a bit wacky and completely absurd, not my kind of comedy, but it's set to open big during the summer. Goldie Hawn is back! The beloved comedienne hasn’t hit the big screen since 2002’s “The Banger Sisters,” but she’a finally returning to the multiplex with the comedy “Snatched,” co-starring none other than Amy Schumer as her hapless daughter. The film follows the duo as they embark on what looks to be the trip from hell, with a big twist.
Schumer stars in the feature as Emily, an unlucky-in-love singleton who, after being brutally dumped by her boyfriend on the eve of a long-planned trip to South America, cooks up the idea to take her mom instead. Hawn’s mama character is uptight, adverse to change and terrified of the sun. Surely these two will have a wonderful time on their tropical vacation.

Here’s the brand new movie trailer for Snatched which stars relative newcomer Amy Schumer and veteran legend Goldie Hawn. Goldie Hawn hasn’t appeared in a film since 2002’s “The Banger Sisters,” an extended hiatus that’s coming to an end next year. “Ghostbusters” scribe Katie Dippold is writing the untitled adventure comedy (often referred to as “Mother/Daughter,” though the title doesn’t appear to be official) along with Kim Caramele and Amy Schumer, who’s set to appear as one half of the semi-eponymous duo with Hawn.

In a marketing plan that has me both really wanting to learn to surf, and stay as far away from water as I possibly can, The Shallows has released what they are calling their final trailer!
In a world where good thrillers involving Sharks can be counted on one hand, well, with one finger, Sony and Blake Lively are looking to add a new one to the long list of Jaws and nothing else. If the trailers are any indication of how exciting The Shallows will be, then we are in for a fun thrill ride.
Early Wednesday morning Sony released what they are calling their final trailer for the upcoming isolated survival drama The Shallows. The film follows a young surfer who is standard on a giant rock. In view of the shore she must find a way to outsmart a great white that stalks her, waiting for his own chance to attack.
