On the heels of its premiere to critical acclaim at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the film Kneecap on the Irish rap trio of the same name has been slated for release by Sony Pictures Classics in theaters nationwide on August 2, when it will open against Columbia Pictures’ family film Harold and the Purple Crayon.
The first Irish-language film to bow out of Sundance, where it landed the Next Audience Award, pic stars Naoise Ó Cairealláin aka Móglaí Bap, Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh aka Mo Chara and JJ Ó Dochartaigh aka DJ Provaí as themselves, all making their acting debuts. Others in the cast include Josie Walker, Fionnuala Flaherty, Jessica Reynolds, Adam Best, Simone Kirby and Michael Fassbender.

“Every word of Irish spoken is a bullet fired for Irish freedom,” says Arlo (Michael Fassbender), a member of the Irish Republican Army who learned Irish Gaelic during a stint in prison, to his son Naoise and the youngster’s best friend, Liam. It’s a phrase that would stick with the pair—who’d go on to become two-thirds of the rap group Kneecap—far more than any of the warnings they’d get from the police, or “peelers” as they unaffectionately call them, as well as members of the paramilitary group Radical Republicans Against Drugs.
Rich Peppiatt’s Kneecap follows cheeky youths from North Ireland whose passion for rapping nearly matches their unabashed hatred of the Brits and their powerful lackeys for oppressing the Irish people and suppressing the use of Irish Gaelic. Despite the verisimilitude the film garners from its risky and ultimately brilliant decision to have Naoise,...

The film, the debut feature of director Rich Peppiatt and the first Irish-language feature to play Sundance, premiered on Thursday night at the Prospector Square Theater to critical acclaim, after which the band played a set at the after-party at The Cabin on Main Street. [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Outlander Season 7 Episode 4, “A Most Uncomfortable Woman.”] Outlander‘s latest installment has sent Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) north to Fort Ticonderoga, as they join the rebels on the American Revolutionary War front — but not before a shocking reunion took place in Wilmington. Intending to travel to Scotland, the Frasers find themselves changing course, particularly Jamie who is conscripted into the fight. Fresh off of losing their home at Fraser’s Ridge to a fire, they’re still coming to terms with the situation and this shift in their plans. While completing errands around town though, Claire bumps into none other than Tom Christie (Mark Lewis Jones), who she assumed was dead; he took the fall for Malva’s (Jessica Reynolds) murder in the first episode, allowing Claire to be released from prison. What’s more startling is that Tom doesn’t utter a word but plants...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Outlander Season 7 premiere, “A Life Well Lost.”] Outlander is back and delivered plenty of emotions in its Season 7 premiere episode, “A Life Well Lost.” As Jamie (Sam Heughan) raced to save Claire (Caitriona Balfe) from potential death, his fellow Scotsman Tom Christie (Mark Lewis Jones) stayed close by her in order to keep watch. While she remained imprisoned for allegedly murdering Tom’s daughter Malva (Jessica Reynolds), Tom sought justice in the form of a fair legal process. When Claire is whisked away to care for Governor Martin’s (Eugene O’Hare) pregnant wife, she sends a letter back for Tom, conveying her desire to have Jamie come and rescue her. It’s his involvement that allows the Frasers to be reunited and ultimately set free when he makes the gallant choice to sacrifice himself by confessing to the crime neither he nor Claire committed. While Tom is partly responsible for...

After keeping us in Fraser’s Ridge for multiple seasons — featuring a slew of frustrating but not always interesting villains, and at the cusp of the Revolutionary War — “Outlander” Season 7 feels like a breath of fresh air.
The season premiere begins where we’ve been before: a determined Jamie (Sam Heughan) with Ian (John Bell) at his side, out to save his beloved Claire (Caitríona Balfe) from being tried for the death of Malva Christie (Jessica Reynolds). Claire, meanwhile, does what she can to survive — and she has truly perfected the art of keeping her wits about her while facing impending doom.
But unlike other seasons that bludgeoned and violated our heroine in unnecessarily graphic ways, we’re given a respite here. Instead, Claire’s looming trial and potential execution are delayed in part thanks to her skills as a doctor and because of the era’s political unrest, with Jamie always one step behind.

Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan, and the rest of the gang are sharing what they’re most excited for fans to see onscreen this season when the show returns to Starz, and the answers may surprise you. As viewers will recall, Claire (Balfe) and Jamie (Heughan) ended Season 6 on quite a cliffhanger as she remained imprisoned for the alleged murder of Malva Christie (Jessica Reynolds). Meanwhile, Jamie was rescued by his nephew Young Ian (John Bell), as Richard Brown (Chris Larkin) planned to have him shipped off to Scotland and away from Claire. Only the show’s upcoming premiere will reveal what’s to come, but Balfe’s excitement for the season stems from the relationships Claire is having with other men.

Starz has released the first trailer for “Outlander” Season 7, which will premiere June 16.
The new season, inspired in part by Diana Gabaldon’s “Outlander” book series, will waste no time getting into action, picking up on the harrowing events of the Season 6 finale where Jamie (Sam Heugan) and Young Ian (John Bell) were racing to rescue Claire (Caitriona Balfe) before she was tried and wrongfully convicted for the murder of Malva Christie (Jessica Reynolds).
In true “Outlander” fashion, nothing comes easy; the trailer depicts much hardship to come for the Frasers and those they love. The American Revolution is in full swing and the chaos that comes with an emerging nation means the land they once called home is changing. Will Jamie, Claire, Brianna (Sophie Skelton), Roger (Richard Rankin) and their loved ones be able to change with it is a key question this season.

The opening title sequence for Outlander Season 7 will be sung by Sinéad O’Connor, following a tradition each season of adapting the show’s theme song by drawing inspiration from upcoming storylines and locations. Season 7 is set to premiere this summer.

Season 6 of “Outlander” aired between March and May of this year, which made it eligible for the 2022 Emmy nominations. Unfortunately, the Starz fantasy epic was completely snubbed when the noms were announced on the morning of Tuesday, July 12. All 14 “Outlander” actors that were submitted for Emmy consideration came up empty-handed, including Caitriona Balfe (who plays time-traveling doctor Claire Randall Fraser) and Sam Heughan (who plays her Highlander true love Jamie Fraser), as did all of the show’s behind-the-scenes talent.
It’s not the first time “Outlander” fans found themselves disappointed when the series wound up not nominated by Emmy voters. In fact, the first five seasons only nabbed a grand total of four below-the-line bids: music score (2015), production design (2016) and costumes (2016 and 2018). The popular program still has yet to receive any above-the-line Emmy love for its actors, writers, directors or producers.

The fan-favorite Starz drama “Outlander” is back on the Emmy ballot in the hopes of securing nominations for its sixth season. So which candidates from the show are up for consideration? Scroll down for the list.
Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan lead a parade of 14 actors whose performances will be considered by the television academy. As usual, Balfe’s performance as heroine Claire Fraser is entered into the Best Drama Actress race, where perhaps her recent appearance in the Oscar-winning “Belfast” could help boost her into the top six for the very first time. Heughan is gunning for his first nom for Best Drama Actor as Jamie Fraser. They’re followed by a whopping 10 supporting actors including Sophie Skelton as Claire and Jamie’s daughter Bree. Two guest stars are entered on the ballot: Maria Doyle Kennedy and David Berry, both for the episode “Give Me Liberty.”

“I had to dig deep with Claire in a way that I hadn’t before,” admits Caitriona Balfe about the particularly challenging sixth season of the Starz drama “Outlander,” which explores a shattered Claire’s attempts at coping with the trauma of being abducted and brutally assaulted. “Last season we really got to explore a different side of Claire that I was kind of shocked that we were doing. When they first came to me with this storyline about the ether,” the actress reveals.

Spoiler Alert: The following story reveals major plot points from the Season 6 finale of Starz’s Outlander.
Starz’s Outlander wrapped up its sixth season tonight leaving So many questions unanswered—yes, that was indeed the finale, one for a season that was shortened due to the pandemic.
But if there’s a fandom that’s proven to be (mostly) patient it’s those dedicated to the timeless love story of Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and her beloved Jamie (Sam Heughan), one that is threatened yet again by separation.
The episode titled “I Am Not Alone” opens as Richard Brown (Chris Larkin) and his men, guns drawn, arrive at the Fraser home looking to arrest Claire for the murder of Malva Christie (Jessica Reynolds). But Jamie won’t let her go without a fight. A gun battle ensues leaving the couple to wait for nightfall when more will arrive ready for battle.

This week’s Outlander feels like two episodes in one. Strong performances from the entire cast supported a script that streamlined many book chapters into an hour and 10 minutes. The dysentery outbreak in the first half is seamlessly linked to the shocking cliff-hanger ending through Claire’s hallucinations, but sorry history nerds: the Hamilton song lyric episode title is more about the shocking cliff-hanger than the war!
Roger finishes another Sunday sermon at the meetinghouse but realizes the MacNeil family is missing. Claire, Brianna, Lizzie, and Malva go to their cabin for what we call today a wellness check and it turns out the entire family is severely ill. Mrs. MacNeil and one of the children dies of dehydration. Claire curses her inability to save them but forgets her medical assistants are 18th Century folks who are convinced something’s wrong with her.

In the next new episode of Season 6 of “Outlander,” Claire (Caitriona Balfe) faints from a mysterious illness, and Variety has obtained an exclusive sneak peek.
The episode, titled “The World Turned Upside Down,” airs April 10 on Starz. It was written by Toni Graphia and directed by Justin Molotnikov. In the episode, a dysentery epidemic has spread across the Ridge. While attending a funeral for those who’ve already succumbed to the sickness, Jamie (Sam Heughan) tells Claire she doesn’t look so well herself.
“You look a bit like a ghost, Sassenach. Haven’t slept for days and hardly paused for food,” Jamie says to his wife, using his nickname for her. As the Ridge’s only medic, Claire has likely been investigating the cause of the epidemic but has come up empty-handed. The Christies are already stirring up drama on Fraser’s Ridge and we’re only one episode into Outlander‘s long-awaited sixth season. The Starz hit introduced Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) former fellow Ardsmuir prisoner and apparent longtime adversary Tom Christie (Mark Lewis Jones) as the man traveled with his son Allan (Alexander Vlahos), daughter Malva (Jessica Reynolds), and their fisherfolk to the North Carolina region to settle down. Although welcoming, Jamie and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) are apprehensive of the staunch Protestant’s potential impact on their community. Their fears are especially apparent when Allan is caught having stolen a powder horn from Richard Brown’s (Chris Larkin) men, a family that Jamie and Claire would preferably have nothing to do with. (Credit: Starz) In order to try and set boundaries, Jamie addresses Tom towards the end of the Season 6 premiere, noting that his word is law on the Ridge.

The sixth season of “Outlander” sees a continuation of Claire and Jamie’s fight to protect those they love, as they navigate the trials and tribulations of life in colonial America. On the red carpet the cast discussed the long wait for Season 6, with #DroughtLander coming up more than once.

Droughtlander — the upsettingly long time between seasons of Outlander — is almost at an end. The historical fantasy returns to Starz for its sixth season on March 6. Based on the season’s opening episode, which had its world premiere February 24 in London, this new installment will be well worth the wait.
The first episode of the season, titled “Echoes,” raises the stakes for all of “Outlander’s” characters and reckons with Season 5’s brutal finale. Claire (Caitríona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) have built a life for themselves in Fraser’s Ridge, North Carolina, but Claire is still processing the trauma of her sexual assault. Meanwhile, the Revolutionary War is on the horizon, and Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and Roger (Richard Rankin) wonder how they’ll weather the coming conflict.

Starz has set early 2022 for the long-awaited Season 6 premiere of Outlander. The announcement comes as production winds up this week on the sixth season of the fantasy period drama from executive producer Ronald D. Moore, based on Diana Gabaldon’s book series. Production had been delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic; the extended wait for the new season dubbed Droughtlander by many. Starz says the series will return in 2022 with a shortened eight-episode season including a 90-minute premiere episode. Production then will begin on an extended 16-episode Season 7, according to Starz. Both seasons initially were slated for 12 episodes, in line with the previous five seasons. Starz also released some new photos from Season 6 (see above and below).
“We are excited to get into the editing room to work on bringing the fans one step closer to reuniting with the family back on Fraser’s Ridge,” said Matthew B. Roberts, Outlander showrunner.

The Droughtlander is finally going to end — but not for a while. Production on “Outlander” Season 6 will wrap this week, but you won’t get to see it until “early 2022,” Starz said on Tuesday.

Irish immigrants learn it’s unwise to persecute witches in The Curse of Audrey Earnshaw, a handsome-looking sophomore effort from writer-director Thomas Robert Lee. Aspiring to the artful folk-horror of Robert Eggers’ The Witch with a nod to M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village, it sets its doomed 19th century-style hamlet in the shadow of 1970s America for reasons that are hard to guess. That odd choice has little impact on the movie, though, which hits some notes well but never really generates an overall sense of dread.
