Back in the mid-2010s — before Ann Thomas started her Transgender Talent management company — it wasn’t always easy for Hollywood productions to find trans actors. “They were calling around to LGBT centers: ‘Do you happen to know somebody?'” recalls Thomas, who started the agency in 2015 after appearing on an episode of Glee that featured a 197-person-strong, all-trans choir, many of whose members were found through such untraditional casting methods.
Since then, Thomas has won roles for an array of the company’s trans and nonbinary clients including Zoey Luna (a lead in the 2020 film The Craft: Legacy), Shannon Gibbs (Jackass 4.5) and Emmett Preciado (Good Trouble). “She cares about the job part of it and she cares about the emotions of every single one of the people whom she represents,” Luna says of her manager.

Witchcraft, in all of its pop cultural representations, has always been a bit queer. Whether it’s the hallowed image of an unmarried woman and her cat, Bette Midler with her iconic fake teeth, or a coven of angsty teens bonding over dark magic rituals, it’s no surprise that LGBTQ folks have always felt drawn to stories about the supernatural. While there is nothing explicitly queer about the original “The Craft,” Andrew Fleming’s 1996 dark comedy about a group of teen witches, the film’s swift and definitive transformation into cult classic included a healthy dose of queer reclamation.
While the recently released continuation, “The Craft: Legacy,” does not lean any further in the Sapphic direction, it does include a trans girl in the coven. What’s most refreshing about the character of Lourdes, played by 17-year-old newcomer Zoey Luna, is that she’s just one of the witches.

If you grew up in the Nineties, you were blessed with a steady supply of witch’s brew. Between movies like Hocus Pocus, Practical Magic, Eve’s Bayou, and The Witches — and in TV shows like Charmed, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch — outsider females with supernatural powers were ubiquitous.
But the movie that best defined the era’s seasons of the witch was The Craft. Released in 1996, the cult classic centers on a trio of teens (Fairuza Balk, Neve Campbell, and Rachel True) who bring the new...

In a boost to cinemas, Roadshow’s local comedy-drama Rams has posted the third highest opening weekend post-covid, behind only Tenet and After We Collided.
Opening on 298 screens and earning $809,177 ($1.27 million with previews), Roadshow CEO Joel Pearlman has touted the result, arguing it proves Australian audiences are enthusiastic to return to cinemas.
A reimagining of 2015 Icelandic drama Hrútar, Jeremy Sims’ directs the Michael Caton and Sam Neill-starrer which follows two estranged brothers as they raise separate flocks of sheep descended from their family’s prized bloodline. When a rare disease threatens their stock, they have to work together to save their sheep, their small town and their family’s legacy.
Over the weekend, Neill was nominated for the Aacta Award Best Lead Actor for his performance. The supporting cast includes Miranda Richardson, Wayne Blair, Leon Ford, Travis McMahon, Asher Keddie, Hayley McElhinney, Kipan Rothbury and newcomers Asher Yasbincek and Will McNeill.

A lot goes down in The Craft: Legacy - so much so that you may get lost in the sauce by the time the climax hits the screen. Before we dive into the film's big final battle, let's have a brief refresher on how we got there.
The film begins with Lily (Cailee Spaeny) and her mother Helen (Michelle Monaghan), who have moved to a new city to live with Helen's boyfriend Adam (David Duchovny) and his three sons. It's obvious from the beginning that Helen and Adam have different parenting styles, and the blended family will have a ways to go before reaching harmony. At her new school, Lily's humiliated by Timmy (Nicholas Galitzine), an overcompensating jock who turns the unexpected arrival of Lily's period into a class spectacle. The trauma leads to her meeting Tabby, Frankie, and Lourdes, three witches who have been desperately searching for the fourth member of their coven.

Editor’s note: The following article contains major spoilers for the end of “The Craft: Legacy.”
For eagle-eyed viewers, the first trailer for Zoe Lister-Jones’ “The Craft: Legacy” packed one hell of a callback to the original 1996 film: a shot of star Fairuza Balk in character as Nancy Downs, the embattled leader of the teen coven that Andrew Fleming’s cult classic followed. While Nancy’s fate in “The Craft” wasn’t at all a happy one — she’s remanded to a psychiatric ward, her powers stripped after a “binding” by Robin Tunney’s Sarah Bailey — Lister-Jones’ film offers a new future for Nancy that could set the stage for a continuing franchise.
Set 25 years after the original, Lister-Jones’ film initially replicates the basic plot that kicked off Fleming’s film, following witch-in-the-making Lily (Cailee Spaeny) and her mother Helen (Michelle Monaghan) as they move in with her mom’s...

If you were hoping that The Craft: Legacy would include a reunion with the first film's coven, we're sorry to disappoint you right off the bat. While the sequel does pay homage to its predecessor in a few ways, we don't get to see or hear anything about the iconic '90s cast, which included Neve Campbell, Robin Tunney, and Rachel True. But the new generation of witches, played by Cailee Spaeny, Lovie Simone, Gideon Adlon, and Zoey Luna, take the reins as our new coven with an enthusiasm that's reminiscent of the first foursome. It isn't until the last half of the film that we start getting hints that there's more to the story behind Cailee's (Lily) power and the final moments of Legacy tie the two installments together.

The Craft: Legacy’s Lovie Simone is still in shock that her on-screen coven of witches got along as well as they did and as quickly as they did. Many months removed from filming, Simone still considers her co-stars Cailee Spaeny, Gideon Adlon and Zoey Luna to be sisters, something she credits to director Zoe Lister-Jones and the environment she created on and off set. Simone plays Tabby who represents the classical element of fire from within the coven. She can even turn her fingers into a blow torch at will.

Earth, water, fire and air — the four elements of nature — were the inspirations for costumer Avery Plewes in designing the wardrobes for “The Craft: Legacy,” which drops on demand Oct. 28, just in time for a witchy Halloween.
Director Zoe Lister-Jones helms the Sony Pictures/Blumhouse Prods. sequel to 1996’s cult classic “The Craft,” with a fresh coven of high school witches — played by Cailee Spaeny, Lovie Simone, Gideon Adlon and Zoey Luna — who discover their powers and lean into their newfound magic while forming a sisterhood.
In both films, the girls are meant to be outsiders, but Plewes found that the clothes that set the friends apart in the ’90s were no longer outrageous. “It was a bit daunting at first,” she says of the assignment. “The way the girls dressed in the original is very popular today. If I dressed them like the original, they would feel normal, so...

Back in 1996, a little movie arrived on screens in the form of The Craft, and an instant cult classic was born. In the 24 years since, passion for the story of four high school witches who band together for magic and friendship has exponentially found an adoring audience.
Blumhouse and Sony Pictures have teamed up to bring us another chapter in the series, The Craft: Legacy, and it sure earns its moniker.
First of all, when you start a film with Alanis Morrissett’s Hand in My Pocket as a camera hovers over a car with a moving trailer behind that is rolling down a street adorned with fully colored fall trees -- we’re already intrigued.
We meet mom Helen (Michelle Monaghan) and her high school aged daughter, Lily (Cailee Spaeny), as they belt out a track that obviously has longtime meaning to both parent and child.

Playing in the same sandbox as such an iconic film as The Craft can be a tricky sport, but according to The Craft: Legacy's Lovie Simone, the sequel is able to stand on its own thanks to one element: time. "This Craft is definitely similar to the other in the sense that the outsiders are the weirdos and the girls are stepping into their power," she told Popsugar over the phone. "I think all of that is the same, but it's for the girls now. It's for what the weirdos look like now, what witches look like now, and how a coven would thrive in today's age against this generation's brand of hypermasculinity."

Trans actors in prominent roles have for years been absent from major studio films, but that will change this year with the release of Columbia and Blumhouse’s “The Craft: Legacy,” which casts Latin trans actress Zoey Luna as one of its four female leads. But Luna’s inclusion didn’t happen by accident. Though director Zoe Lister-Jones wrote the character of Lourdes as trans, the character’s representation was the product of an open casting search of over 300 trans actors, as well as the participation of both GLAAD and an independent consultant who specializes in trans issues on screen, Scott Turner Schofield. Schofield, who is trans himself, worked closely with Lister-Jones and Luna on “The Craft: Legacy” but also works on HBO’s “Euphoria” hand-in-hand with creator Sam Levinson and its trans star Hunter Schafer. He’s one of a rising trend of trans professionals brought in to consult with creators and crew,...

As a teenager, there were a handful of films that were essential to me during those tumultuous years, with Andrew Fleming’s The Craft being one of movies that I watched the most when I was in high school and in college. Being someone who still considers The Craft to be one of the most iconic and influential genre movies to come out during the 1990s, I was pretty curious about what The Craft: Legacy was going to bring to the table after all these years. And while I wouldn’t say that it is a perfect outing by any means, there’s still a lot to appreciate about what writer/director Zoe Lister-Jones achieves with Legacy, delivering up a light-hearted examination of teen culture in contemporary society that also thoughtfully explores gender dynamics. Plus, it was also nice to see a female-centric film that didn’t have its dramatic...

Nearly a quarter-century has gone by since cult horror classic “The Craft” tapped into a pre-Harry Potter fascination with witches, giving teenage audiences a sense of how empowering it might feel for four young women, persecuted by date-rapey d-bags and openly racist prom queens, to invoke a little black magic in their desire to get even. That surprise hit was creaky even by 1996 standards, but its Goth-grunge attitude was hella edgy by comparison with “Clueless” and other clean-scrubbed YA offerings of the time, and one would hope that a Blumhouse follow-up made in the year 2020 might find a way to feel similarly avant-garde.
Instead, “Blumhouse’s The Craft: Legacy” comes across as “The Craft: Lite,” a watered-down, PG-13 reboot in which the outsiders are no longer treated as freaks, and their mission amounts to enlightening Neanderthal classmates and other assorted chauvinists about the risks of underestimating young women. Doing so...

You didn’t need to be a teenage witch — practicing or just aspiring — to vibe with Andrew Fleming’s 1996 cult classic “The Craft.” Underneath all the glamour (literally) is a film about alienation, bullying, and value in fighting back against people who want to keep you down. In short: perfect for teens, even better for teen girls. Nearly a quarter-century after Fleming’s film was released (and became a sleeper hit in the process), its magic has finally inspired
Zoe Lister-Jones’ “The Craft: Legacy” wears its affection and appreciation for the first film on its bedazzled sleeves, while making the case for the newly minted series to continue in a very different era than the one in which it was conceived. Lister-Jones’ callbacks to Fleming’s original come in a variety of forms, from winking nods to iconic lines and scenes to a firm handle on the original’s more complex emotions and interpersonal relationships.

There’s a mother-daughter sing-along to Alanis Morissette in the opening sequences of “The Craft: Legacy,” which seems to be a subtle reminder that it’s been a while since the 1990s, and that this sequel-reboot is not here just to retread the terrain already explored by 1996 cult hit “The Craft.”
Whereas that earlier examination of teenagers forming a powerful coven often plays like a cautionary tale about hubris and unchecked power, this new chapter, under the guidance of writer-director Zoe Lister-Jones (“Band Aid”), revels in a quartet of outcasts discovering their capabilities, and it gives them an outside force to battle, so that they have something to do with their spells besides get revenge on the mean girls.
Lily is the new kid in school, having moved with her mom, Helen (Michelle Monaghan), to live with Adam (David Duchovny) — a therapist and best-selling author focused on men reclaiming their masculinity — and his three sons.

When one of the teenage witches in “The Craft: Legacy” says that the ability to give birth shows that all women have some magic in them, trans actress Zoey Luna casually corrects her and says not all women have that power.
“Trans girls have their own magic too,” Luna’s character Lourdes says in passing. It’s a simple line and doesn’t directly fuel the narrative, but it clearly identifies Lourdes as trans and gives her a strong sense of agency, a rare example of positive trans representation in a studio film.
But “The Craft: Legacy” did more for Luna and the trans community than just show representation. Director and writer Zoe Lister-Jones, a cisgender woman, worked directly with GLAAD and an independent “trans consultant” named Scott Turner Schofield in making sure that the film’s dialogue, tropes and its on-set environment were all as inclusive as it could be,...

Terri Taylor has been the in-house casting director for Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Prods. since 2013, a job that’s unusual at the studio level. Blum and Taylor have built a language and relationship that goes back even further, to the studio’s 2010 “Paranormal Activity 2.”
When she’s not working on casting Blumhouse productions, Taylor invests her time in mentoring other casting directors within the Blumhouse world. “She is my mentor,” casting director John McAlary says. The two first met in 2007 when he first worked as an assistant. “She oversaw the process on “Welcome to Blumhouse.” He adds.

Certain immutable facts of life will always stay the same. Monkeys are found on the ground, fish in the sea, birds up in the sky, and Hollywood will never stop rebooting every darn film under the sun. Nature in harmony, then.

For alternative kids of a certain age, 1996’s The Craft was more than a touchstone horror movie; it was an aspirational tale of independence. Maybe even more than the original’s director Andrew Fleming and writer Peter Filardi fully realized, a movie about four female friends using their witching powers to rise above (or is that levitate over?) the rigors of high school life and literally walk on water was intoxicating to Gen-Xers and older millennials who liked to paint it black. It appears that the quite on-the-nose legacy sequel of The Craft: Legacy is picking up on those witchy vibes of empowerment too.

It’s time to call the corners, again.
The first trailer for “The Craft” sequel conjures up new witches while resurrecting an old demon.
Directed and written by actress Zoe Lister-Jones, whose Sundance debut “Band Aid” charmed audiences in Park City, Utah, the fresh spin invokes the spirit of the original opening with the beloved “light as a feather stiff as a board” game. Despite a few other callbacks ( including “we are the weirdos”), the new film, “The Craft: Legacy,” appears to take place where the 1996 original left off. Cailee Spaeny stars as Hannah, who is forced to move and change schools when her mother (Michelle Monaghan) remarries. She gains three new brothers along with a new dad (David Duchovny). Hannah’s presence at the new school awakens the local teenage coven that realizes they’ve found their fourth.
But it’s not all bedknobs and broomsticks for the teen witches.
