Miami (USA), June 29 (Ians) Argentina’s Gerardo Martino has been appointed manager of Major League Soccer club Inter Miami, a move that reunites him with fellow Argentine Lionel Messi.
The 60-year-old Martino, known popularly as ‘Tata’, replaces former Manchester United star Phil Neville, who was sacked earlier this month amid a poor run of results.
“Tata is a highly respected figure in our sport whose track record speaks for itself,” said Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham in a statement on Wednesday.
“We are confident that his accomplishments and experience as a coach will serve as an inspiration to our team and excite the fans, and we are excited to see the impact he will have on and off the field.”
Inter Miami did not provide details of Martino’s contract, saying only that the club was awaiting employment paperwork before he could officially begin his tenure, reports Xinhua.

On the day it was revealed that soccer superstar David Beckham is in line to star in Disney Plus series “Save Our Squad,” the former mid-fielder turned team owner gave his first in-depth television industry keynote at this year’s MipTV on Tuesday.
Nine-time Primetime Emmy-winning director and producer Ben Winston, hosted the keynote remotely from L.A. with Beckham participating from his Inter Miami stadium in Florida.
After an extensive chat about life during and after soccer, Beckham discussed launching his own production company Studio 99 and his goals for the company, many of which he’s been ruminating on since his playing days.
“I retired at 38, and probably five years before that, I started setting the business up, knowing that at some point I would have to retire,” Beckham explained. “I planned different elements of the business and surround myself with a good team. Throughout my career I was successful,...

BBC’s Live World Cup Feed Cuts Out During Video Technology Discussion Of France’s Win Over Australia
The BBC are having a hard time with their live feed of the World Cup today with its post-match analysis of France’s narrow win over Australia cutting out a number of times.
The British public broadcaster will be glad that the technology failure happened after the match, so as not to remind viewers of the torrid time experienced by ITV during the 2010 World Cup where high-definition viewers missed England’s first goal against the United States thanks to a similar error.
The feed cut out three times during the coverage, which featured former Manchester United defender Phil Neville, ironically, discussing the controversial video technology Var, which is used to decide close calls during the game. Neville was in the BBC’s studio alongside former England footballer Alex Scott and ex-Chelsea striker Didier Drogba. It was being hosted by Mark Chapman.

This week, the British Prime Minister welcomed the stars of this year’s Soccer Aid for Unicef, including former Olympic athletes Usain Bolt and Soccer Aid co-founder Robbie Williams to a reception at 10 Downing Street.
The event celebrated the commitment by the UK government to match every £1 donated by the public through its UK Aid Match scheme, doubling the difference for children in danger around the world.
Soccer Aid for Unicef star players including Sir Mo Farah and Olly Murs joined the Prime Minister to celebrate change made possible by the generous donations of the British public, who have previously raised more than £24 million for Soccer Aid for Unicef since the first match in 2006.
The reception also welcomed young reporter Kendra, aged 14, who travelled to see how donations to Soccer Aid for Unicef can help children in Lesotho, school children and Unicef UK Children’s Champions – members of the public...

Autumn nights may be getting colder and darker, but thankfully, 'tis the season of brilliant television. And trust us, there's no let up this week - from the first new-look X Factor live shows, to the return of excellent hit comedies Catastrophe and Detectorists.
1. Scream Queens - Monday, 10pm on E4
It's Halloween week, so what better way to mark the occasion by watching a bunch of horror movie clichés screaming their lungs out and being as catty as an Apprentice contestant?
Jamie Lee Curtis stars in this hilariously camp horror anthology series which also contains a who's-who of young stars from Emma Roberts to Lea Michele to Nick Jonas. Even Ariana Grande isn't safe in this Mean Girls vs Midsomer Murders madness.
2. Catastrophe - Tuesday, 10pm on Channel 4
It only feels like yesterday since Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney's messed-up romcom began, and we're being spoiled rotten...

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has given his blessing to the homeless squatters who have taken up residence in his new hotel and allowed them to stay in the building during the winter.
Former Manchester United star Neville and hotel co-owner Ryan Giggs have received planning permission to transform Manchester's historic stock exchange into a new boutique hotel, but the building was sitting empty as the footballers planned for extensive renovations to take place before opening. Housing activists occupied the site on Saturday (October 17).
Wesley Hall, leader of housing activists Manchester Angels, told the Manchester Evening News that he was left "crying and shaking" after talking to Neville on Sunday.
"What a great guy Gary Neville is," Hall said. "We've been in negotiations with him and things are looking good. He said the main building work isn't taking place until February, so we'll be okay to stay until then."
I'm crying.

Documentary film The Class of 92 documented the journeys of a group of footballers as they went from fledgling youth players to worldwide icons in a matter of years.
Now, a new BBC series shows how Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, Phil Neville and Nicky Butt are taking on the serious side of football: owning a club.
The five players (minus fellow Class of 92 star David Beckham) star in Out of Their League, a three-part series that follows the new owners of Salford City Fc, after they decided to buy their local club in 2014. The documentary promises to give football fans a rarely-seen close look at how a football club is run, and the challenges that face everyone from the owner to the tea lady.
A future reality show?

It took Steve McClaren a full two-and-a-half weeks to finally get an assistant in at Newcastle United, but the Magpies head coach finally has a man in position.
At the very least the likes of Phil Neville, Bolo Zenden and Steve Round had already rejected McClaren’s advances before he was able to get a deputy in place. Eventually, after spending a great deal of time and effort on organising the make-up of his backroom staff, McClaren was able to convince Ian Cathro to join him at St James’ Park.
The 28-year-old is a relative unknown to most Premier League football fans because he has never worked in England before. Instead, the former Dundee United academy director has learned his craft by moving around Europe – via Portugal and Spain.

The transition from football into punditry is no easy task. Just ask Phil Neville.
Still, Paul Scholes has been with BT Sport for half a season now and you'd think he'd have learned that there's a camera in front of him recording whatever he says.
However, the former Manchester United midfielder must have had a momentary lapse on Tuesday night - when Robbie Savage was being Robbie Savage and winding Scholesy up about United's Class of 92.

The World Cup is over and Louis van Gaal has finally taken charge at Manchester United – almost two months to the day of being named as David Moyes’s successor. Van Gaal has overseen a successful World Cup campaign with the Netherlands during that period, guiding them to a third place finish, and has now got to work at Old Trafford.
Today, the Dutchman delivered his first ever press conference as Red Devils boss, and there were more than a few interesting revelations as he undertook his media duties for the first time in his reign at United.
Van Gaal answered questions on what would represent a successful season during his first campaign in charge of the club, whether or not he intends to retain the services of Paul Scholes and Phil Neville in his backroom team and when he expects to unveil another new signing.

Despite uttering the infamous line "you can't win anything with kids", Alan Hansen went on to become one of the longest-running and most well-respected football pundits in the UK.
After 22 years, Hansen has appeared on his final edition of Match of the Day on BBC One, leaving Alan Shearer as the only regular pundit alongside Gary Lineker on the flagship football show.
With a place to fill, Digital Spy has selected 11 potential candidates to replace Hansen as the next full-time pundit from the 2014/15 season onwards.
1. Gary Neville
The BBC may be tempted to sensationally poach arguably the best pundit working today in Gary Neville. Sky are highly unlikely to let the older Neville leave, but he would bring a modern, technology-filled touch to proceedings. Despite only working on TV for a couple of seasons, he has already built a reputation as an intelligent expert, rather than just an ex-player saying a few words on screen.

The BBC is easily winning the battle of the pundits at the 2014 World Cup, according to poll results.
The survey reveals that - despite getting complaints over its commentary and mocked on social media at various points during the tournament - fans still prefer the BBC's team to ITV's offering from Brazil.
Digital Spy's poll of nearly 4,000 fans had an overwhelming 73.90% backing the BBC as their favourite, while ITV lagged behind with 17.64%.
8.46% said that they opted to stick the TV on mute to avoid TV pundits altogether.

The battle of the pundits between the BBC and ITV at recent major tournaments has been something of a one-sided competition.

I never thought I'd ever say this, but ITV aren't as bad as everyone makes out when it comes to live football. Hear me out - it's not as crazy as it may first sound.
For years, I've been baffled that anyone would choose to watch ITV over BBC One if given the choice. However, as this year's World Cup has proved so far, both channels have had their fair share of gaffes and errors.
The BBC is pretty stellar when it comes to live tennis, snooker, athletics and many other sports, and Match of the Day is clearly light years ahead of ITV's The Premiership, but has ITV suddenly gained back some ground this year?
There's probably two words that you're thinking which throws out my argument: Adrian Chiles. The former BBC man has become the face of ITV football, possibly because they're stuck with him and don't know where to plonk him.

The BBC has confirmed that it received 445 complaints about Phil Neville's commentary of England vs Italy at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
The former England defender co-commentated the match alongside Guy Mowbray on Saturday (June 14) and was the subject of much mirth and criticism on Twitter for his supposedly soporific voice.

A BBC statement read: "Phil is an important, well-respected member of our team and will continue to play a key role throughout the tournament, both as a studio guest and match commentator."
Neville will be a studio pundit for Iran vs Nigeria today (June 16), for Russia vs South Korea tomorrow (June 17) and Nigeria vs Bosnia on Saturday (June 21).
England's next two group games, against Uruguay on Thursday (June 19) and Costa Rica next Tuesday (June 24) are being broadcast live on ITV,...

Have you heard the one about Phil Neville's World Cup commentary. I Said Have You Heard The One About Phil Neville'S World Cup Commentary!
The BBC's World Cup coverage launched in full over the weekend and despite having approximately 456 pundits flown out to Brazil, somebody, somewhere thought it was a smart idea to give Phil Neville his first big co-commentary gig in the England v Italy game.
Don't worry, Phil, there's only 15 million people watching. Nobody will notice if you get off to a shaky start. Oh, hang on.
Barely registering above a whisper, Neville sounded like he'd come straight off the set of Jamaica Inn. Throw in a staccato presentation manner, which meant that he barely broke into sentences longer than half a dozen lines long (Was he actually being really smart and speaking in Haikus?), and you've got a recipe for one the most simultaneously snooze-inducing...

London – The BBC on Monday expressed support for former soccer star Phil Neville, whose commentary of the weekend's World Cup game between England and Italy had drawn a flood of Twitter criticism. British soccer fans, including Ricky Gervais, commented on his performance, with many calling it "monotonous." “Phil is an important, well respected member of our team and will continue to play a key role throughout the tournament, both as a studio guest and match commentator," the BBC said in a statement quoted by The Guardian. Alan Hansen bid farewell to the Match of the Day studio last night as he called time on the 2013/14 Premier League season and also his own career at the BBC.
Hansen has been one of the key faces of BBC Football for 22 years, but after one more World Cup in Brazil, the former Liverpool captain will be hanging up his punditry boots for good.
He managed to turn "shocking defending" into a catchphrase and his line, "you can't win anything with kids" - referring to a Manchester United team who went on to win the double in 1995 - still haunts him to this day.
But Hansen hasn't been universally liked as a pundit for many years. From criticisms about his hefty pay packet, to his partnership on the Match of the Day panel with Alan Shearer, there are plenty of football fans who consider him a crossed-legged cliché machine and uninspiring.

Arsenal and Chelsea are in competition to sign 19-year-old midfielder Saul Niguez from Atletico Madrid, according to the Daily Mirror.
The promising youngster, who is currently on loan at La Liga side Rayo Vallacano, is a subject of official interest from Arsenal, but it is reported that Chelsea’s top scout is also on the case.
Mourinho is eyeing the young Spanish U-21 international as a replacement for Kevin De Bruyne, for whom talks with Wolfsburg are at an advanced stage.
Manchester United have also reportedly entered the hunt, with assistant Phil Neville reportedly flying personally to Spain to watch Real Vallenco’s clash with Getafe.
It’s thought that Athletico Madrid are amenable to a move as the youngster is not in contention for a first-team place, and to alleviate some of their recent financial problems. The club had UEFA payments withheld in late 2012 over an unpaid tax bill,...

David Beckham had his wife, Victoria, and three sons, Brooklyn, Romeo, and Cruz, by his side at the world premiere of The Class of '92 in London on Sunday. The littlest Beckham, Harper, was absent on the red carpet, but there were plenty of other friends and fans out to show their support. The Beckham family's longtime pal Gordon Ramsey brought his son Jack while the boys of One Direction attended the film's premiere as well. David is one of the subjects of the documentary, which follows the careers of six players, including Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, and Paul Scholes, from the Manchester United soccer club. David and his sons all wore red ribbons on their suits in support of World Aids Day, while Victoria tweeted about the cause. View Slideshow ›...

Football is intrinsically cinematic. The elation when the ball hits the back of the net, the despair when it doesn’t. The personalities, the transfer story-lines and the hold it has on so many people’s hearts. Documentary makers Benjamin and Gabe Turner play heavily on this notion, as their latest feature The Class of 92, dramatises and illuminates the sport – as we delve into the group of young boys who followed their childhood dreams and became Manchester United legends. You may be concerned that unless you’re a United fan you’ll feel alienated by this picture, but instead we explore a team camaraderie and get inside the politics of football, allowing enough in here for any fan of football to appreciate and enjoy. Yes Liverpool fans, even you.

Ben and Gabe Turner's football documentary The Class of 92 puts Manchester United's treble-winning team of 1999 under the microscope, specifically the six players - David Beckham, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs - who graduated from the club's youth academy and became some of the most decorated players the English game has ever seen.
Simply put, the Turners' film is funny and moving - essential viewing for football fans. Contributions from the likes of Tony Blair and Danny Boyle put the time period of The Class of 92 into a wider cultural context, but at its heart this is a Stand by Me-like tale of six young friends growing up together and sharing many ups and downs.

"Him or Leonardo DiCaprio, or maybe Bradley Cooper," he added. "They're not bad looking guys!"
Beckham also spoke about his retirement from professional football, saying: "I'm coping pretty well. I had lots of things set up for when I called it a day. I was very lucky I finished my career on such a high.
"My career was pretty successful over the last 20 years and to be able to finish my career at Psg with a trophy, and then walk away from football, was very special.

It feels like yesterday that Alan Hansen famously wrote off Manchester United's young side at the beginning of the 1995/96 Premier League season, insisting that "you'll never win anything with kids". Yet, here we are over 18 years later, still talking about that very team, enough to warrant a much-anticipated documentary.
The Class of 92 centres around six members of that season's winning side, who rose from the ranks of United's youth team to become some of the most celebrated players in the history of the game. On paper, one may feel this would be aimed purely at Manchester United fans, but soon after the initial introductions, this clearly isn't the case.

The Class of 92 is a splendid film about six Manchester United friends living their (and our) dreams
Who knew? It is difficult to imagine a feature-length film charting the rise of six Manchester United footballers from Fa Youth Cup to Champions League winners being so laugh-out-loud funny. The Class of 92 is no comedy but it expertly and easily aces the six-guffaw test by which such movies stand or fall in the world of the Observer film critic, Mark Kermode.
Football, friendship and fame are the prevailing themes of a splendid documentary made by the film-making brothers Gabe and Ben Turner, but there is no shortage of funny either. Reunited for just one day last summer, David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Phil and Gary Neville, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes clearly revelled in recalling their seven-year ascent through the United ranks, from put-upon first year apprentices to treble-winning kings of Europe.

Gary Lineker has defended Match of the Day from criticism of its football analysis and punditry.
The former England striker has presented the highlights show since Des Lynam's departure in 1999. It has in recent years been criticised by Stan Collymore and others for a lack of quality in its analysis.
"It's comfortably the most difficult thing in terms of football punditry on television," Lineker told Digital Spy.
"It's the most-watched show for a start - it's not an anoraky kind of show, we don't have hours.
"Our show is not aimed at people that think they're technically better than they are because they play FIFA or whatever.
"It's aimed at the general public who want to watch the highlights of their teams with a little of bit of a) analysis b) opinion and c) news stories of the day. We also have, obviously, very little time."

Former Manchester United and England icon David Beckham is confident new boss David Moyes can guide the defending Premier League champions to the title in his first season in charge of the Red Devils.
Beckham admitted that Moyes faces a tough job at Old Trafford as the first manager to replace Sir Alex Ferguson following the legacy that the retired Manchester United boss has left behind.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, Beckham said:
“I’m sure he has had lot of mentoring, he is one of those managers that has always picked up the phone and spoken to Sir Alex.
“It was always going to be difficult job for whoever succeeded Sir Alex because of what the manager has brought to Manchester United, what he has brought to the game.
“It’s going to be interesting, but I still think United will win the league. I’m a Manchester United fan!

New Manchester United manager David Moyes has wasted no time in stamping his authority on the Premier League champions following his appointment as Sir Alex Ferguson’s replacement.
After a summer of unprecedented upheaval at the Theatre of Dreams, which has seen the famous club name a new manager for the first time in over quarter of a century, the 50-year-old former Everton boss has already made the club his own.
Steve Round, Moyes’ former assistant manager at Goodison Park, has been named as the successor to Mike Phelan, while Everton’s goalkeeping coach Chris Woods has replaced Eric Steele.
Added to that, former Toffee’s skipper Phil Neville has followed Moyes on the journey from Merseyside to Manchester as a team coach.

New Manchester United manager David Moyes will deliver his first official press conference this afternoon.
The 50-year-old former Everton boss is expected to address a number of issues, such as a potential deal for Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara, the appointment of Ryan Giggs as player-coach as well as the long-term future of striker Wayne Rooney.
Rooney has been heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford ever since former United boss Sir Alex Ferguson omitted him from the club’s final two Premier League games last season, amid claims the 27-year-old had handed in a second transfer request in three years.
The England international was booed by a section of supporters as he collected his winner’s medal after United’s final league game at Old Trafford and was also jeered during the club’s open top bus parade through Manchester the following week.

This summer saw the retirement of a series of truly great footballing people.
Jamie Carragher, Paul Scholes, Phil Neville, David Beckham… Oh, and Sir Alex Ferguson, too, all stepped aside from the beautiful game.
And while Ryan Giggs, the most decorated player in the Premier League, signed a one-year extension at Manchester United at the beginning of March, surely it is only a matter of time before he too follows the likes of former teammates Scholes, Neville and Beckham in calling time on his illustrious 23-year playing career.
It will be a sad day when that time comes and one which, despite its inevitability, will shock football in the same way as Ferguson’s own retirement did last month.
The legendary midfielder is ingrained into the very fabric of Manchester United and like Ferguson will be sorely missed from the game when he does decide to hang up his boots,...

Alan Hansen has reportedly decided to quit Match of the Day.
The football pundit is said to have told producers that he will leave the BBC show after the 2014 World Cup, The Sun reports.
Last year, it was revealed that Hansen was paid £1.5 million a year for his role on Match of the Day, which was later reduced to £1 million.
BT Sport have allegedly attempted to poach him for their new lineup of shows, but Hansen reportedly wants to quit TV altogether for the time being.
A source said: "Alan is sad to go but he's had a fair run at it. It was more or less a mutual decision between him and the BBC.
"He's not currently considering any other offers and is looking forward to some time off. He is nearly 60 now and he's got more than enough money to retire."

David Moyes is expected to be named Manchester United manager this afternoon, a mere 24 hours after Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to retire, according to the Mirror.
The Everton boss is understood to have been handpicked by Sir Alex himself and the Old Trafford board have unanimously agreed with his decision.
It is believed Moyes has agreed a five-year contract to succeed Fergie, and will be bringing former Red Devil defender Phil Neville with him – as part of his coaching staff.
Fergie has agreed to step down after more than 26 years in charge and will take a place on the club’s board as a director and ambassador.
The veteran manager was reportedly close to tears yesterday morning as he broke the news to his players and staff that he was set to step down, stating: “It’s over. It’s time.”

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson looks set to offer Everton £15million for left-back Leighton Baines as he seeks a replacement for veteran Patrice Evra.
The Daily Mail are reporting that talks have reopened between the two clubs over the players potential availability and Ferguson is said to be “increasingly confident” of landing the England international’s signature.
The two sides have done business before, with Phil Neville swapping Old Trafford for Goodison Park and more notably Wayne Rooney moving from Merseyside to Manchester in the past, whilst David Moyes and Ferguson are said to have a good relationship.
The Mail say that finding a replacement for left-back Patrice Evra, 31, has been one of Ferguson’s top priorities of late, and Baines is his preferred choice. The club had also been linked with a shock move for left-back Ashley Cole, who is set to join midfielder Frank Lampard in departing...

Match Preview
David Moyes’ Everton will be looking to continue their undefeated run this month following a plucky point against Champions Manchester City and an important win over Tottenham. They will consider themselves disappointed to have only drawn with Stoke last weekend, however, as a win would have seen them sitting in a top four spot this weekend.

Everton vs Newcastle United team line-ups are in.
For David Moyes’ Everton, England international defender Leighton Baines is a welcomed returnee at left-back having missed the last couple of games with a groin injury. Phil Neville and Darron Gibson have also been able to overcome their knocks they took in the draw last week at Wolves.
Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew has named the same starting line-up that has played the last few games, keeping in tact the three pronged attack of Demba Ba, Papiss Cisse and Hatem Ben Arfa. The only change that has been forced upon Pardew in recent weeks has been utility man James Perch coming in at right-back for the injured Danny Simpson.
Here’s the full teams for today’s game. Kick-off is at 3pm at Goodison Park and the game won’t be screened live anywhere in the UK.
