This week, comedian Heather McMahan’s first comedy special Son I Never Had debuted on Netflix and according to McMahan, it all started with an edible and a vision board. A few years back, McMahan says she was hungover on New Year’s Day and as corny as it might sound, she decided to manifest that she wanted to bring her popular jokes to a wider audience beyond her Instagram followers and devoted fans, dubbed McManiacs. In July 2019, comedian Heather McMahan was at a Lululemon-sponsored Malibu retreat when she got a phone call that changed her life — after a suggestion from Maria Shriver (who followed McMahan, also host of the Absolutely Not podcast, on Instagram), the Today show asked her to join Jenna Bush Hager as a fourth-hour guest co-host.
In her new comedy special, McMahan shares the full, unedited version of that story: when the invite from Today came in, asking her to jump on a redeye to New York while being practically incapacitated by edibles. “They haven’t seen the special yet, but I know Jenna is going to love that part of the story,” McMahan says with a laugh on the eve of Son I Never Had‘s release. “Hoda is the coolest, but I’m sure she’ll be like, wow, what a professional to come after [the] show after having been high for three days.

Plenty of haunted, Halloween and holiday options will crop up on Netflix in the month of October. The harvest doesn’t seem too lean despite the almost five-month writers strike that viewers are sure to feel next year, but at least the WGA and AMPTP have reached a deal, and hopefully, SAG-AFTRA is not too far behind. Luckily, Halloween and fall have a classic canon of films and TV shows that stretches back decades, and some of those staple watches will be available through Netflix throughout the month.

Highlights this month include a brand-new series from Spook Master Mike Flanagan. The Fall of the House of Usher is a gothic tale loosely based on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allan Poe, and tells the story of two extremely unpleasant siblings whose family dynasty ends up going to hell in a handbasket. Before you ask: yes, Rahul Kohli is in it. That’s all that a lot of people need to know here (we’re people).
Elsewhere, Netflix is dropping a few interesting-looking docuseries, including one on football legend David Beckham. It promises to be an “intimate portrait” of Beckham, and the filmmakers were apparently granted unprecedented access to the sportsman and his family while making it.

Heather McMahan found herself an absolutely yes. The comedian, who also hosts the popular Absolutely Not podcast on the Dear Media network, will debut her first stand-up special on Netflix Oct. 17. Titled Son I Never Had, the hourlong show is based on the material from her facetiously-titled The Farewell Tour, which ran 94 dates throughout North America in 2021 and 2022.
McMahan draws from her own personal life — both hardships, like the grief of losing her father days after he received a pancreatic cancer diagnosis, and lighter fare like an ill-advised childhood bowl cut — to find the humor in widely universal themes like grief and body image. The special offers an introductory version of her life story to new audiences while also dropping Easter eggs for her longtime fans and listeners. “I want to paint a picture of what baby Heather looked like, okay?” starts one joke. “I’d always wear my dad...

NBC is getting into business with Heather McMahan.
The comedian and podcast host (and recent Hollywood Reporter Next Big Thing subject) is developing a comedy for the network. She has sold a script for I Can’t Right Now, based loosely on her own life, and is attached to star as well.
Universal Television and Annapurna are producing the multicamera project. McMahan is set to star as Heather McDaniels, who is juggling a budding comedy career with her mom, sister and boyfriend pulling her in every which way.
In addition to writing and starring, McMahan will executive produce I Can’t Right Now with Jen Zaborowski, Dan Levy (The Goldbergs), and Annapurna’s Patrick Chu and Ali Krug.
McMahan hosts the podcast Absolutely Not and is currently on a stand-up tour dubbed The Comeback Tour (after 2021’s Farewell Tour). She also has a self-produced stand-up special (directed by Zaborowski) in the works.

Moving into her mom’s basement was the best thing that’s ever happened to Heather McMahan. The comedian, who can be described as an auditory David Sedaris for the millennial set — she hosts the Absolutely Not podcast, where she works out emotional kinks on topics like friend breakups and traumatic celery juice regimens — recently started her second stand-up tour in as many years (she’ll do nearly 50 stops at major theaters by June). She’s also working on a pilot for NBC and putting the finishing touches on an hourlong special she produced herself. And, if you ask her, all of this came precisely because she left town.
McMahan had been living in L.A. and New York but returned to her native Atlanta with her husband to keep her mother temporary company (or so she thought) during the pandemic and amid the still-painful loss of her father to cancer.

It’s that time of year where I start watching every Christmas movie possible. Not so long ago I started on December 1st but I soon realised that even at two a day I was missing out on some great movies, so now as soon as Halloween is over I get started. Netflix seem to have the same idea because their first festive offering of 2021 started streaming on the 5th November.
If this was a straight to DVD-style release it would probably be called A Catfish For Christmas, which is only slightly worse than the title they opted for. In Love Hard, Natalie (Nina Dobrev) is a writer who is struggling to find love through her dating apps. That...

— if audiences can get past the conceit that an attractive, self-respecting woman would be so desperate for a boyfriend that she’d stick around after a potential beau pulls a despicable deed by “catfishing” her. For those who find that completely implausible even by dumbed-down genre standards, the remainder is hard to love. The ensuing shenanigans not only do our heroine a massive disservice by letting men manipulate her agency — they also cause us to question what exactly we’re rooting for when the perky protagonist stoops to equally lowdown behavior.
Los Angeles journalist Natalie Bauer (Nina Dobrev) is searching for her soul mate in the online dating world, but failing spectacularly with local prospects. Her Flirt Alert app matches have tested her patience with men using outdated profile photos, standing her up completely and worse, cheating on their spouses. "Love doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to be honest." Netflix has debuted an official trailer for a holiday romantic comedy titled Love Hard, directed by Costa Rican filmmaker Hernán Jiménez. An LA girl, unlucky in love, falls for an East Coast guy on a dating app and decides to surprise him for the holidays, only to discover that she's been catfished. This lighthearted romantic comedy chronicles her attempt to reel in love. So a "catfish" romcom, but with a twist? Or two? Nina Dobrev stars in this as Natalie Bauer, with a cast including Jimmy O. Yang, Darren Barnet, James Saito, Harry Shum Jr., Mikaela Hoover, Heather McMahan, Althea Kaye, Rebecca Staab, Matty Finochio, and Fletcher Donovan. I like that this is about her learning to actually fall for the guy who catfished her, that's kind of sweet. Or am I just crazy? This seems like another...

This is in the inspiration for Good Grief, which follows three vibrant women who are forced to confront a world they thought they knew after the patriarch of the affluent McDaniel family kicks the bucket. The trio take an honest and humorous look at their inner selves, no matter how absurd life can seem to be. Seven years after her Best Actress win for “Silver Linings Playbook,” Jennifer Lawrence can finally say she’s moved on from the infamous moment where she fell walking up the stairs to collect her trophy. But getting to a point in her life where she can look back fondly at the Oscars fall took some time. Lawrence looked back at the fall during an appearance on Heather McMahan’s “Absolutely Not” podcast and opened up about how she confronted Anderson Cooper after she was left “devastated” by his accusation that she faked falling in order to appear more relatable.
“I was ready for it. I was very nervous and also very superstitious. I didn’t want to acknowledge the possibility that I would win. I didn’t want to write down a speech,” Lawrence said. “I had everything in my head. I was very, very nervous but I was ready.
