The Sundance Film Festival may kick the snow off its boots once and for all.
The annual celebration of independent film announced on Wednesday that it is open for pitches from cities across the United States on becoming the new permanent home of the festival starting in 2027.
Sundance has taken place in the luxury mountain haven of Park City, Utah since 1981 (except for two virtual years during the pandemic). It started off as the Utah/U.S. Film Festival in Salt Lake City in 1978. It will remain the host and headquarters of Sundance for two more years, at which point Park City’s contract with the Sundance Institute is up for renewal. Utah will remain in the mix as a continued home for Sundance.

Scandal at a film festival is usually generated by provocative auteurs or loose-lipped actors stirring up drama at press conferences. Last weekend’s laid-back Sonoma International Film Festival, held in the heart of California wine country, was a different story.
Numerous indie film players spotted Sundance Film Festival director Eugene Hernandez at the event, alongside his two predecessors in the role: John Cooper, who left in 2020, and Tabitha Jackson, who stepped down in 2022. All three were in town to screen films and mingle when the eye-popping news spread that Joana Vicente, CEO of Sundance, had resigned her post after less than three years. Surely these observers found the right pinot noir to pair with whispers about what Vicente’s exit means for Sundance — the 40-year-old nonprofit founded by Robert Redford, known in global cinema circles as a destination for artistic discovery. So, what the hell happened?

Joana Vicente is departing the Sundance Institute, where she has overseen the nonprofit and its storied film festival since late 2021. Sundance board member Amanda Kelso will step in as acting CEO through April, while Vicente will remain as an adviser to Kelso and the board through June.
Vicente came to Sundance from the Toronto International Film Festival, and arrived as Covid had pushed the festival online for 2021 and again in 2022. During her tenure, she spearheaded a hybrid format for 2023 and 2024, in which films would be viewed in person as well as online. Like most festivals, fundraising has been challenging due to the pandemic followed by pressures in the larger economy. In June, the Institute laid off 11 staffers. Vicente has also been under pressure to set the festival up for the long term and shape its vision amid a challenging landscape for independent film.

It’s the changing of the film festival guard as Toronto International Film Festival co-head and executive director Joana Vicente steps down from her TIFF role after three years to return to her roots in American independent film. She will take over as CEO of the Sundance Institute, succeeding influential CEO Keri Putnam, who exited earlier this year after 10 years. Vicente’s last day at TIFF will be October 31, and she will begin her role at the start of November, working between the Institute’s Park City, Los Angeles, and New York City offices.
The search for her replacement was led by Sundance Board of Trustees Chair Pat Mitchell and Chair-Elect Ebs Burnough. In a statement, the board said the hiring resulted from “a very comprehensive search to find the right person who would continue to move us forward with a vision that aligns with the founding values of the Institute’s founder,...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on September 16th, 2021, reviewing the new documentary “The Capote Tapes” – regarding the author Truman Capote – in select theaters beginning September 17th.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Truman Streckfus Persons was born in New Orleans, later taking his stepfather’s last name, and arrived in New York City in 1943 at age 19. His first novel “Other Voices Other Rooms” was published in 1948, and became the first mainstream American best seller that had a plot and characters that were openly gay, just like the author. Of course, he went on to write the classics “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and “In Cold Blood,” while maintaining his swishy reputation as a persona on talk and game shows. The film explores it all, including audio interviews associated with a biography of Truman by George Plimpton.
“The Capote Tapes” has a limited release in theaters on September 17th.

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
I just got back from New York City, where I covered the MTV VMAs red carpet. To see Lil Nas X blazing his rainbow trail continues to amaze me in the most beautiful way. He is LGBTQ power and awareness personified. And then to top it all off, I had Troye Sivan teasing the upcoming video for his new sex-centric single, “Angel Baby.” Reflecting on his career and now Lil Nas X’s monumental rise, Sivan says, “We’re moving in the right direction.”
Meanwhile, Lil Nas X, whose debut studio album “Montero” drops on Sept. 17, says he’d also love to work with Drake and Nicki Minaj. “I love them,” he says. When I suggest a three-way collaboration, Lil Nays says with a big smile, “Let’s do both of them at the same time!”.

Paul Schrader’s The Card Counter moves from Venice into 579 theaters this weekend — the first in a welcome stream of specialty films from the Lido, Telluride and Toronto that could, perhaps maybe, buck up the struggling arthouse market this fall. The film is 90% certified fresh and hails from Focus Features, which presented one of the rare specialty hits of recent months, Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain.
That film came out in mid-July before the Delta Variant reached full sweep. It was released on nearly double the number of screens.
The Card Counter stars Oscar Isaac, Tiffany Haddish and Tye Sheridan. William Tell (Isaac) a military interrogator haunted by his past just wants to play cards. But his spartan existence on the casino trail is shattered when he’s approached by Cirk (Sheridan), a vulnerable, angry young man seeking help to get revenge on a military colonel (Willem Dafoe). The first trailer for “The Capote Tapes” gives a glimpse into the life of the small man behind towering works like “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and “In Cold Blood.”
Ebs Burnough directed the documentary, centering on the rise and fall of Truman Capote. Burnough, who spent years in politics, used never-before-seen taped interviews from Capote’s inner circle of Lauren Bacall, Norman Mailer, Andre Leon Talley, Slim Keith, and Gore Vidal to craft a portrait of one of American’s most influential writers and public figures.
“Truman himself put it best when he wrote, ‘I’m an alcoholic, I’m a drug addict, I’m a homosexual, I’m a genius.’ He was also a small gay man from Alabama, a man who defied the odds,” Burnough said. “As a director, I stand on his shoulders not only because he blazed a trail that allowed stories by and about marginalized people to be told,...

After 10 years running the Sundance Institute, CEO Keri Putnam told her staff and the Board of Trustees that she will step down later this year.
In an interview this week, Putnam said the decision was her own and that she had been mulling a departure in recent years, particularly in the wake of long-time Sundance Film Festival director John Cooper’s exit in 2019 and hiring his replacement, Tabitha Jackson. However, she wanted to remain involved with the festival through the 2021 pandemic edition, and its conclusion struck her as a logical time to exit.
“Once the pandemic hit, it was obvious that I was going to stay with the organization to help onboard with Tabitha and the team for this challenging year,” Putnam said. “Having come through that in ways we all were really proud of, it just felt like a natural moment of closure for me to let the incredible team move forward.

Keri Putnam, CEO of the Sundance Institute, will step down from her role later this year after more than 10 years with the arts non-profit.
Putnam this week informed staff and the Board of Trustees of her decision. She will remain in the role through the end of the fiscal year. Board of Trustees chair Pat Mitchell and vice-chair Ebs Burnough will co-chair a search committee to find Putnam’s replacement.
Under Putnam’s leadership, Sundance hosted its first ever virtual festival earlier this year, and she also led the non-profit in growth as well as the launch of new programs to support artists seeking production, financing and distribution, including Sundance Catalyst, which raised $40 million in equity and grant investment over the past eight years for a wide variety of independent projects.

Ebs Burnough’s doc centres on Truman Capote’s unfinished novel but its real intrigue is its subject’s unknowable psyche
There’s a necrophiliac fascination to this documentary about the life and times of Truman Capote, author of the 1958 novella Breakfast at Tiffany’s – filmed with Audrey Hepburn – and the true-crime reportage masterpiece In Cold Blood from 1966. The latter was about the brutal slaying of a Kansas farming family in which the cold-bloodedness of the crime was matched by the cold-bloodedness of Capote’s literary and journalistic performance – befriending the culprits with prison visits and privately agitating for their death penalty to give his book a sensational ending. If anyone had the splinter of ice in the heart that Graham Greene said a novelist needed, it was him.

He partied with high society America but caused outrage when he spilled their secrets. Ebs Burnough talks us through his new film about Answered Prayers – the ‘smart, salacious’ novel Capote never finished
When Truman Capote died in 1984, he left the remains of a novel he had been hatching for nearly two decades, and talking about for almost as long. Answered Prayers, the story of a budding writer screwing his way through polite society, was intended to be Capote’s most explosive achievement. He likened it to a deadly weapon. “There’s the handle, the trigger, the barrel, and, finally, the bullet,” he told People magazine. “And when that bullet is fired from the gun, it’s going to come out with a speed and power like you’ve never seen – wham!” Having bragged about the book for years, all he had to do now was write it.

"'How could your friend do this to you?'" Altitude Films in the UK has released an official UK trailer for the documentary The Capote Tapes, the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Ebs Burnough. This originally premiered at last year's Toronto Film Festival, and also played at the Hamptons and Rio de Janeiro Film Festivals. Using the tapes, animation, and new on-camera interviews with people who knew him, the film explores the impact of Truman Capote's explosive unfinished novel "Answered Prayers". TIFF adds: "He published three excerpts as magazine pieces that caused high scandals and recriminations, but no further manuscript was ever found. Plimpton's tapes shed new light on what happened. They are interwoven with Capote's notorious television appearances and insightful interviews with the likes of Dick Cavett and Jay McInerney." The doc film "delivers a fresh portrait that reinvigorates our understanding of this vital writer, much like I Am Not Your Negro...

Doc NYC will open its 10th edition next month with Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and The Band, the feature from Daniel Roher that served as the opening-night film of this year’s Toronto Film Festival. It kicks off a lineup that includes 136 feature-length documentaries and 28 world premieres among more than 300 films and events overall, repping the biggest slate yet for the event already considered the nation’s largest documentary festival.
The New York-set fest also said Thursday that it will close with Ebs Burnough’s The Capote Tapes, a fresh portrait of Truman Capote, with André Leon Talley part of a post-screening Q&a with the director. Doc NYC’s centerpiece presentation is another Tiff pic, Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator, from director Eva Orner.

The old line you hear about certain authors — he’s as much of a character as anyone in his books! — doesn’t tend to be true even when we say it. Yet in Truman Capote’s case, it’s virtually an understatement. No character he created on the page ever gave off quite the magnetic damaged resonance of his own.
He told the tale of his own youth, more or less, in “Other Voices, Other Rooms” (1948), the autobiographical novel that put Capote — and his homosexuality — on the map. Holly Golightly, from “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” (1958), is an indelibly chic vagabond-waif, but the main reason we still talk about her is the 1961 movie version that cast Audrey Hepburn as a so-toned-down-she-was-barely-even-the-same-character version of Holly. Capote singlehandedly invented the New Journalism with “In Cold Blood” (1966), but as revolutionary as that book was, the disappointment of it, to me, has always been that...

Truman Capote was many things to many people. A high society princeling turned pariah. A crafter of crystalline prose. An evangelist for the true crime novel. A tiny terror.
Yet civil rights pioneer is rarely a part of that conversation. “The Capote Tapes,” a new film about the writer’s rise and fall, may change that. At a time when gay people faced prison and social ostracization, Capote was out and proud.
“As a black gay man who grew up in Northern Florida, I was always taught to remember the people on whose shoulders I stood — the people who made life a little easier for me,” Ebs Burnough, the first-time director behind “The Capote Tapes,” told Variety. “Truman was openly gay in the 1950s at a time when black and white people couldn’t even be married to each other. He was who he was. My hope is that this film demonstrates that gay,...
