One of Netflix’s biggest hits of this year was the sci-fi series 3 Body Problem. Adapted from the eponymous book series by Chinese author Liu Cixin, the series captured the attention of fans due to its complex story and great production, as well as the brilliantly written characters and casting choices. While a lot of fans thought it was complex and were somewhat confused by the differences between the series and the books, the series received positive reviews from critics and fans, so it was expected that Netflix would renew it for a second season. And that has just happened! We are happy to confirm that Netflix has officially renewed the 3 Body Problem for a second series!
The series has been officially summarized by Netflix as follows: “3 Body Problem explores how humanity chooses to respond to its gravest threat. Starting off during China’s Cultural Revolution in the ’60s,...

Given the massive amount of resources that Netflix committed to "3 Body Problem" (not to mention the lengthy stay at the top of Netflix's Top 10 lists since its debut), it was likely only a matter of time before the streaming giant made the obvious official. That's finally happened, and now fans of one of the nerdiest, densest, and most existential sci-fi book series ever written can look forward to showrunners and co-creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo's take on what's widely considered to be the best book of the alien-invasion trilogy.
Season 2 of "3 Body Problem" is now confirmed to be in the works, as Netflix announced in a social media post on Twitter (only literal extraterrestrials would ever call it "X") earlier this afternoon. For those who haven't yet caught up on the first season, which I reviewed for /Film here, consider this your cue to...

When Game of Thrones TV series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss set out to craft an epic series called 3 Body Problem, an adaptation of a trilogy of sci-fi novels written by Chinese author Liu Cixin, for the Netflix streaming service, they were hoping to get four seasons out of the material. But when the first season of 3 Body Problem started streaming in March and pulled in a sizeable but underwhelming number of views, some began to question whether or not Netflix would want any more episodes of the big budget show. Now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Netflix has indeed ordered more episodes – but just enough to allow Benioff, Weiss, and co-creator Alexander Woo to wrap up the story. Exactly how many episodes that will be has not yet been revealed.

Netflix announced on Wednesday that it had “renewed” “3 Body Problem,” but the streamer notably didn’t refer to the extension as a “Season 2.” Instead, it appears to be more of a case of Netflix ordering “additional episodes” instead of a new, full Season 2 order.
Per a press release, the exact number of seasons and episodes will be announced at a later date.
It appears that the order will take the series to its finale, as creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and Alexander Woo noted in a statement that they “get to tell this story through to its epic conclusion.” In an April interview with Collider, Benioff said the team would “need at least three, maybe four seasons to tell the whole story.”

Cixin Liu’s 3 Body Problem trilogy was considered unadaptable, but D.B. Weiss, David Benioff and Alexander Woo did it for Netflix. Even though Season 1 is streaming, that doesn’t mean they’ve solved Season 2. The trio joined Deadline’s Contenders TV event Sunday to discuss the adaptation, and Weiss explained why continuing the show poses even more creative problems.
“This kind of eases you into the world of the story but the story gets really wild in the best possible way,” Weiss said. “With something that’s that wild, there are a lot of choices to be made and a lot of things to be figured out. We’ve been putting our heads together to figuring them out recently especially the past couple months.”
3 Body Problem involves scientists from around the world discovering a virtual reality video game which leads them to another intergalactic species. The story spans past and present.

Years after their last major production came to a divisive end, the "Game of Thrones" creators have launched their next big-budget gambit with Netflix's "3 Body Problem" (reviewed for /Film by yours truly here), yet another boundary-pushing adaptation based on a series of novels long considered to be as dense and audience-unfriendly as it gets. Yeah, that definitely sounds familiar. But unlike author George R.R. Martin's much edgier and more modern take on the fantasy genre, Chinese writer Liu Cixin wrote his alien-invasion epic "The Three-Body Problem" with much less provocative themes in mind -- or, at least, provocative in very different ways.

“3 Body Problem” production designer Deborah Riley is no stranger to creating epic environments — she won four consecutive Emmys for her work on “Game of Thrones.”
Netflix’s new series reunites Riley with creators David Benioff and D.B Weiss. “That show was vast insofar as cold and hot environments and in its scope and scale, but I had no idea what the term meant until ‘3 Body Problem,’” Riley says, comparing the two shows.
Adapted from the Chinese science-fiction saga by Cixin Liu, the series opens with the Cultural Revolution. Young scientist Ye Wenjie (Zine Tseng) watches as her father is beaten to death in front of a crowd by the Red Guard. She’s sent to a top-secret base on the Red Coast where she learns that the Chinese government has been sending transmissions hoping to make contact. Netflix’s “3 Body Problem” is based on a wildly popular book series by Cixin Liu — but how close does it come to the source material? Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Netflix's new series "3 Body Problem" has a lot going for it. There's the intriguing, multi-layered sci-fi premise that's pulled straight from Liu Cixin's popular novel of the same name. There's an intriguing ensemble cast that includes "Game of Thrones" MVPs like John Bradley and Liam Cunningham along with the likes of Benedict Wong and breakout star Jess Hong. Perhaps most importantly for viewers committing their hard-won time to the series, there are several entertaining and disturbing mysteries at the heart of "3 Body Problem," from scientists dying by suicide after mental countdown clocks show up in their brains to a mysterious invisible woman who's just as likely to kill our heroes as she is to offer them a smoke.
By the end of the show's eight-episode first season, "3 Body Problem" does offer some solid answers to our questions.

This 3 Body Problem review contains no spoilers.
Beginning with HBO‘s epic Game of Thrones and continuing with Netflix sci-fi effort 3 Body Problem, producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have come to understand an important shortcut in adapting literature for television: keep as much of the good stuff as you can.
Though latter seasons of Thrones deviated significantly from George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series (mostly due to the fact that Martin couldn’t get the final two books in on time…or maybe ever), the early seasons stuck close to the novels’ rich world. Game of Thrones season 1 is a damn-near carbon copy of the book A Game of Thrones, give or take a Littlefinger monologue here or a “Tyrion slept through the battle” there.

The year is 2296. The place is Filly, the post-apocalyptic “vault” where Lucy (Ella Purnell) must fight to survive in a world already on the edge of extinction. The place is filled with scavengers, ne’er-do-wells, and rules you can’t learn until you’ve broken them.
The place is actually Hotel San Jose in Austin, Texas — but it’s an impressive disguise.
TV and film activations once again took over South by Southwest in March, inviting fans and curious visitors into the world of shows like “Fallout,” “Star Trek: Discovery,” “Halo,” “3 Body Problem,” and more. For better or worse, the small screen is getting smaller. For every 80-inch TV mounted on a wall, there’s someone downloading their favorite shows to watch on a phone while commuting. The aliens are coming. In the sci-fi thriller from David Benioff and D.B. Weiss (Game of Thrones) and Alexander Woo (True Blood), Earth’s population is under deadly threat from extraterrestrials fleeing their dying planet. To find out more about the epic saga, based on the book series by Liu Cixin, we spoke with the 3 Body Problem cast. To see the full interview, watch the video above. The tale begins with brilliant scientist Ye Wenjie (Zine Tseng), treated brutally as a young woman during China’s 1960s Cultural Revolution, making a terrible choice that will lead invaders to Earth. The aggressors have yet to reach our planet when we see her in present day (Rosalind Chao), but something’s strange. Science experts are mysteriously committing suicide—or are they being killed? “Ye’s [youthful] actions are the result of trauma, hopefulness, and a desire to change the course of humanity,” Chao tells us.

Not long ago, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were at the top of the television world. Game of Thrones was a juggernaut and continuously won many Emmys. They had been tapped to help the future of Star Wars. Even HBO was moving forward on questionable projects, simply because their name was attached. However, even though Game of Thrones left the air almost five years ago, the creative duo has been missing in action.
Finally, 3 Body Problem gives them an opportunity to return to the television throne. With the help of co-creator Alexander Woo, the three men take on the mammoth task of adapting the book series. While 3 Body Problem is not a perfect show, it is among the best premieres of the 2023-2024 Emmy season. It’s also the big sci-fi showcase we’ve been waiting for from Netflix.

PSA: “3 Body Problem” isn’t a horror show.
At least not intentionally; the new Netflix series from Alexander Woo and “Game of Thrones” showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss is hard sci-fi, but elements of it will surely inspire fright in some viewers. Ahead of the first episode’s South by Southwest premiere, Netflix projected an ominous countdown into the sky at a nearby intersection, followed by a message saying that humanity would learn to fear again. At least one Uber driver told this reporter he found it terrifying, and it’s hard to disagree.
Based on the novel (and subsequent series) by Cixin Liu, “3 Body Problem” — as the March 7 trailer finally confirmed — is about mankind’s first contact with aliens. The series spans timelines and genres in a sweeping story about humanity and its place in the universe, but as IndieWire’s Ben Travers noted in his review,...

Spoiler Alert: This post contains some details of Netflix’s 3 Body Problem, set for an eight-episode launch on the streamer March 21.
“Why should I get bent out of shape about what the world might look like 400 years from now,” physics research assistant Saul Durand (Jovan Adepo) says flippantly in Netflix’s 3 Body Problem. “I have no control over that.”
The sentiment of those words landed hard on me, because that’s almost exactly how I felt about the bloated and often remarkably boring big-budget sci-fi series from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and True Blood producer Alexander Woo.
Premiering Friday night at SXSW in Austin’s Paramount Theatre, Netflix’s much-hyped series is based on the Hugo Award-winning writings of Cixin Liu. Set to launch with eight episodes worldwide almost everywhere but Liu’s native China on March 21, the fact is 3 Body Problem...

For years, fans of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy series believed the books simply couldn’t be adapted to the screen. There were too many characters, spread across multiple continents, in stories that would take years to intersect. And much of the plot was inspired by events that took place decades, if not centuries, before the contemporary action. It was an impossible task, everyone assumed. No one could do that.
Then David Benioff and D.B. Weiss actually did it. HBO’s Game of Thrones was a global smash,...

Adapted from Lui Cixin’s award-winning Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy, and drawing primarily from the first novel in the series, 3 Body Problem is a mystery story that takes place on a cosmic scale. David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo’s series begins with a slew of suspicious deaths in the scientific community. When the world’s particle accelerators simultaneously begin churning out nonsensical data, an unnamed agency becomes convinced that these two events are somehow connected and sends a charmingly disheveled intelligence officer, Da Shi (Benedict Wong), to investigate.
As he sleuths into the ongoing deaths, Da uncovers a conspiracy that can be traced all the way back to the bloodiest days of China’s Cultural Revolution and to an astrophysicist named Ye Wenjie (played by Zine Tseng in her youth and then Rosalind Chao as an adult). Through flashbacks we learn that, distraught by the violence that she’d witnessed,...

Adapting a book named after a physics problem into a TV show meant to entertain the masses is both an admirable challenge and an invitation for disaster. Cixin Liu’s “Remembrance of Earth’s Past” trilogy has sold millions of copies around the world. Clearly, readers are connecting with something inside the former engineer’s weighty tomes about Earth’s first encounter with extraterrestrial life — and it likely isn’t the orbital mechanics. The colossal scale, galaxy-spanning stakes, and relatable characters all serve as emotional anchors that can hook people, and they all serve as key, replicable facets for a TV adaptation, too. What’s a bit harder to picture are casual fans scooting to the front of their seats for detailed explanations of interstellar travel and multi-dimensional theory. But hey, that’s the gig. You can’t say David Benioff and D.B. Weiss went into “3 Body Problem” unaware.

Publicity materials for Netflix’s new sci-fi drama 3 Body Problem refer to Benedict Wong’s character, a slightly rough-around-the-edges investigator with cross-jurisdictional concerns, as “Da Shi.”
It’s a nod to Liu Cixin’s novel of roughly the same title, in which the delightfully uncouth Shi Quiang is referred to as Da Shi (“Big Shi”) as a term of endearment. But nobody who hasn’t read the book will know why Wong’s character is being described that way, since he’s now a British-born character less mythically named “Clarence.” The character in the series is perfectly entertaining, but he doesn’t stand out iconoclastically in even a similar way. He’s flatter, less surprising and generally a lot more conventional.

Before a rushed ending soured the “Game of Thrones” fanbase on showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the duo had rightfully earned acclaim for wrangling a seemingly unadaptable series of books into a damn good adaptation. Author and screenwriter George R.R. Martin had written “A Song of Ice and Fire” as a partial response to the strictures of TV, crafting a story with the sprawling ensemble, major battles, sex, violence and abrupt demises he couldn’t work into scripts for the likes of NBC and CBS. The book series kicked off in 1996, just a few years before the rise of premium cable culture drivers would make television more friendly to artistic ambition and less subject to the FCC. Aided by a stellar cast and strong support from HBO, Benioff and Weiss nonetheless did exceptional work translating Martin’s vision into a nuanced drama with a deep bench of antiheroes and competing points of view.

A big-budget series adaptation of a best-selling sci-fi epic, a new season of an acquired Peacock gem, a spinoff series of a Guy Ritchie crime feature, the return of one of the world’s most grueling reality competition shows, Millie Bobby Brown finding herself in all sorts of bother and Adam Sandler getting serious in a space drama are among the standout films and series hitting Netflix in March.

Leaping from the slightly longer February into March, Netflix is welcoming in the new month with big series premieres, special live events, comedy specials, and films to binge at any time!
Coming to the streamer this month, “Girls5eva” will also make its debut after being rescued by the streamer from Peacock cancelation. Both existing seasons of the hit comedy and the all-new third season will premiere on the platform mid-month. Plus, wind down and whet your appetite with new seasons of the hit competition series “Blown Away” and “Is It Cake?,” premiering on March 8 and 29, respectively.
Maybe Netflix’s biggest premiere this month, though, is the highly anticipated limited series adaptation of Cixin Liu’s internationally celebrated “The Three-Body Problem” trilogy from David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo. Benedict Wong, Jess Hong, John Bradley, Sir Jonathan Pryce, Liam Cunningham, and more lead the cast of the sci-fi drama, which...

Exclusive: Chudor House Productions and Artist International Group are teaming on a series adaptation of Truth is a Flightless Bird, the internationally bestselling crime novel from Akbar Hussain.
Banshee‘s Adam Targum will serve as showrunner for the drama, with Odiri Iwuji at Chudor House and Aleksey Ageyev at Artist International Group producing. NneNne Iwuji (African Queens: Njinga) is set to co-write alongside Targum and will serve as an executive producer.
Set between Kenya and the U.S., Truth is a Flightless Bird is a brutal love letter to the frontier town that is present-day Nairobi: a studied observation of the failure of bare-knuckled capitalism, the inequality machines our cities have become, and — ultimately — the profoundly irrational human capacity to hope, to risk everything in order to have something in which to believe.
“Truth is a profoundly authentic deep dive of a universally fractured society,” said Targum of the book,...
