Dave Grohl listed off the numerous reasons to thank our neighbors to the north in a Super Bowl ad for Crown Royal.
The Foo Fighters frontman kicks off his salute to Canada by mentioning the country’s many “legends of music” including Joni Mitchell, Céline Dion, Oscar Peterson, and his recent on-stage bandmates Rush. He then rattles Canada’s other notable achievements like hockey, peanut butter, and the whoopee cushion. He also reveals a football-related fun-fact by crediting the Canadians for the earliest iteration of what later became America’s Game. “Yeah!” Grohl insists. “Look it up!”
There are plenty more thank-yous stashed away in a full series of ads via Crown Royal’s YouTube. Along with an extended cut of the televised spot that features guitarist and Prince collaborator Donna Grantis shredding the country’s National Anthem, another clip reveals Grohl’s incredulous reaction to some of Canada’s lesser-known claims to fame.

Dave Grohl brought out Jack Black to perform Rush’s “The Spirit of Radio” for the seventh night of the Foo Fighters frontman and producer Greg Kurstin’s 2022 Hanukkah Sessions.

Like the previous performances during this Festival of Lights, “Heads Will Roll” was recorded in front of a live audience on Dec.

It’s time again for the Sundance Film Festival, with 2020 marking the independent film festival’s 35th year. This year’s fest runs from Jan. 23 to Feb. 2 and will showcase 118 feature films from 27 countries, short films and documentaries, as well as 20 premieres of hotly anticipated movies.

Last month, we heard the gorgeous orchestral cover of 1980s synth-pop cut “Tarantula” that Beck recorded for the soundtrack of director Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma. On February 5th, Beck visited The Late Late Show With James Corden to perform the song — and he brought along the Los Angeles Philharmonic and a few of his best singer-songwriter pals for good measure.
It’s a lovely performance of the song, which was originally recorded in 1982 by 4Ad band Colourbox and later popularized through a cover by This Mortal Coil, the band led by 4Ad founder Ivo Watts-Russell.

There are a few things you need to get right if you're going to make a movie set in the '80s: the fashion, the lingo and, without question, the music.
Every classic "Hey, weren't the '80s wacky?" film has leaned heavily on its soundtrack, and the folks behind the upcoming indie flick and Toronto Film Festival favorite "Dirty Girl" have apparently been taking notes. The soundtrack to the movie is stocked with pop cheese that will set off pastel-hued flashbacks in nostalgia buffs and entertain anyone who's into the whole yacht-rock revival that seems to be going on these days.
The first thing you'll notice about the "Dirty Girl" soundtrack, however, is how heavy it leans on a relatively obscure pop singer named Melissa Manchester. A favorite of one of the movie's central characters, Manchester lands five of the album's 14 tracks, including her best-known song, the 1982 No. 5 hit...

The Bridesmaids soundtrack. As Tammy Wynette famously opined, sometimes it’s hard to be a woman (she also said they’re justified and they’re ancient, and they drive an ice cream van, but perhaps the less said about that pearl of wisdom the better). To refine the Tamster’s commentary, and give it a veneer of pertinence, sometimes it’s hard to be a woman in Hollywood. Most of the roles that come your way are as much peripheral window dressing as the government jobs dished out to the gals in Gordon Brown’s ill-fated regime of ineptitude were, and that’s only if you’re lucky enough to be the junior side of 35. Once that age bridge has been crossed, the scripts’ll dry up quicker a club comedian who’s just been told his car’s been towed.

Becky Stark, Inara George (of The Bird and the Bee, who was four months pregnant at the time of the shoot) and Eleni Mandell each have their own panel in the triptych format, which recalls movies like the original Thomas Crown Affair and Woodstock. The contrast of the jaunty, pleasant harmonizing with the apocalyptic destruction surrounding them (as well as the Matchbox cars) immediately marks it as Gondry's goofy, winking style. Gondry fans might also be put in mind of the split-screen video he directed for Cibo Matto's "Sugar Water" [...]...

And now, a note from John Oates Anytime an artist covers a song by Daryl and myself, I am usually flattered and always curious. This is the first time that a band has dedicated an entire album to the music of Hall & Oates. In regard to their interpretation of our songs, what can I say? Inara George has a sensual, smooth delivery, and hearing these songs performed from a female point of view is both surprising and engaging....

Individually, The Bird And The Bee vocalist Inara George, singer-songwriter Eleni Mandell, and Lavender Diamond frontwoman Becky Stark all have gentle, sweet, and uncompromisingly pleasant voices, so it’s not a stretch for them to turn in a collaborative effort that is gentle, sweet, and uncompromisingly pleasant. As The Living Sisters, the trio sticks to jazzy close-harmony tunes that are so deliberately retro they sound like pop standards, even though they’re not. Given the women’s collective vocal prowess, it’s unsurprising that their debut album, Love To Live, is consistently pitch-perfect in the literal sense. But the sweetly ...

The Bird And The Bee’s third album was originally titled Guiltless Pleasures before it became the even less ambiguous Interpreting The Masters, all of which is a pretty strong indication that the synth-pop duo’s album of Hall And Oates covers is executed with little to no irony. And rightfully so; thankfully, the patina of ironic appreciation that once coated the R&B powerhouse seems to have gone the way of John Oates’ signature mustache. Instead, The Bird And The Bee employ a genuine appreciation for Hall And Oates’ unassailable pop songcraft. Since vocalist Inara George and multi-instrumentalist Greg ...

One surefire way to know the artist you’re paying homage to gives you his blessing? He shows up at your gig. John Oates, the dark-haired half of Hall & Oates, paid The Bird and the Bee the ultimate compliment Friday night when he joined the alternative/synth pop duo’s packed show at the El Rey in Los Angeles. Singer Inara George and keyboardist Greg Kurstin’s new set is a tribute to Hall & Oates, the most successful duo in pop history. “Interpreting the Masters Volume1: A Tribute to Daryl Hall and John Oates” comes out March 23 on Blue Note Records and...

The bird and the bee, the duo comprised of Inara George and Grammy-nominated producer Greg Kurstin, will release “Guiltless Pleasures Volume 1: A Tribute to Daryl Hall and John Oates” on March 23. As you know, Hall & Oates are undergoing a bit of a resurgence, whether it’s being nominated for a Grammy for best pop vocal by a duo or group this year or having “Your Kiss is on My List” as the centerpiece musical number in “(500) Days of Summer” or the ongoing campaign to have the Philly soul pair inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame....

Los Angeles duo digs into pop pastiche
Having turned their off-the-cuff side project into a surprisingly eclectic debut album and a single that topped Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play chart, singer/songwriter Inara George and veteran producer/sideman Greg Kurstin cast their stylistic nets even wider on their second full-length. As before, George is the coyly wide-eyed focus for Kurstin’s glistening electronic production and bubbling beats, creating a singular personality out of a disparate set of song styles. But unlike before, the Brazilian and psych-pop influences are muted in favor of more straightforward gestures, with bits of icy space pop (“Ray Gun”), swinging Tin Pan Alley (“You’re a Cad”) and pristine, sighing balladry (“Baby”) turning up among hip-hop-style shout-outs and smirking paeans to David Lee Roth. But while the duo borrows a bit too obviously from its influences at times, the album’s detailed production and stylistic shifts reward multiple listens,...

It's a tricky thing to make accessible pop that doesn't hide behind clever irony or fall into the soulless, Auto-Tuned suckhole of Top 40 pap. The Bird And The Bee displayed an aptitude for bubbly, tropicalia-laced pop on its excellent debut, and the cumbersomely titled follow-up, Ray Guns Are Not Just The Future, continues that exploration of carefree, happy-making music. Vocalist Inara George and programmer Greg Kurstin have an affinity for all things pretty and vaguely retro, as her exceedingly pleasant vocals and his lush production attest. It's a formula, yes, but one that works over and ...
