“I don’t play basketball for the money, the fame; I only play because I wanted to change my family’s life,” Giannis Antetokounmpo says in the trailer for his upcoming documentary, Giannis: The Marvelous Journey, released by Prime Video on Wednesday.
The feature-length doc, set for release on Feb. 19, details Giannis’s family’s story beginning with his parents, Charles and Veronica Antetokounmpo, who immigrated to Greece from Nigeria in search of a better life for their family in 1991. Giannis, born in Athens, on Dec. 6, 1994, would make a similar choice when he officially made himself eligible for the 2013 NBA draft. On July 30, 2013, he signed his rookie contract with the Milwaukee Bucks, where he’s played for throughout his entire professional career, leading the team to their first NBA championship since 1971 in 2021.

Less than a week after we reported on Warner Bros. Discovery’s circling of buzzy Sundance documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, the studio has closed the deal valued at $15M, Deadline has learned, acquiring worldwide rights to the pic, which was one of the most buzzed-about titles of this year’s festival.
Wbd’s DC Studios, Warner Bros. Motion Pictures, HBO, CNN Films and Max jointly sought out the project and will collaborate on the film’s global release across theatrical and home viewing release windows. Super/Man‘s deal with the studio was natural given that it’s the home of the Superman films, which shot Reeve to stardom, before the tragic horse riding accident that left him a quadriplegic dependent on a ventilator to breathe.

Updated: “Super/Man,” a documentary about the life of Christopher Reeve, has finalized a deal to sell to Warner Bros. Discovery following its buzzy Sundance Film Festival premiere. It’s an interesting home for the documentary, because Reeve experienced his greatest commercial success playing the Man of Steel in the first four Superman movies, which Warner Bros. produced. James Gunn, the co-head of Warner-owned DC Studios, is currently reviving the character in the upcoming “Superman: Legacy,” which he wrote and will direct.

In conjunction with International Women’s Day, ESPN has revealed details about its month-long “Fifty/50” initiative celebrating the 50th anniversary of Title IX in June.
ESPN is programming a series of short and long-form documentaries directed and produced by women to commemorate the landmark federal civil rights law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in any educational institution that receives federal funding and gives women the equal opportunity to play.
“This is an important milestone for Title IX and we wanted to find creative ways to celebrate it across ESPN and the Walt Disney Company,” says Jimmy Pitaro, Chairman, ESPN and Sports Content.
Debra OConnell, president of Networks for Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution, called Fifty/50 a significant initiative for the company and its affiliates, adding, “the breadth of content is a reflection of the progress that has occurred over the last 50 years and how much more is still to be done.”

Exclusive: The Women’s Dream Team, the 1996 USA Women’s basketball team, dominated the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996 going undefeated to win the gold medal.
The story of how they got there is now to be the subject of a feature doc for ESPN’s 30 for 30 strand.
The film will tell the story of the grueling 15-month road trip that led up to those ’96 Games. It’s the story of the 12 women who were tasked with auditioning the idea of women’s professional basketball in the United States. They absolutely held the very future of the sport in their hands.
After having suffered defeat at the ’92 games and the ’94 World Championship, USA Basketball undertook a revolutionary approach to training its Olympic team by structuring a long-term National Team program comprised of 52 games to turn them into a cohesive unit for 10-months ahead of Atlanta.

"You're fighting for your life." ESPN Films has debuted a trailer for a short documentary called Blackfeet Boxing: Not Invisible, which is premiering on the ESPN channel later this month (June 30th). The 30-minute short doc film most recently screened at the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival earlier in the year. Blackfeet Boxing, co-directed by Kristen Lappas and Tom Rinaldi, follows a group of women practicing and training in self-defense at this gym as the epidemic of missing and murdered Indigenous women continues to threaten lives within their community. It also won the Audience Award for Best Short at AFI Docs. "Frank Kipp opened the Blackfeet Boxing Club in 2003. Since then, he's trained more than 500 boxers on the reservation. Its most important fighters are the young women who come in search of more than a heavy bag." This looks like a very important and powerful film about making change with positive encouragement.
