Generally speaking, I love Takashi Miike. In fact, you could go as far as to say that I’m a fanboy without offending me in the slightest. I’ve followed the director down many strange cinematic roads, and, for the most part, I’ve never been led astray. That is, of course, until I stumbled across “Ninja Kids”, a motion picture that pushes my devotion to all things Miike to the absolute breaking point. The film is loud, garish, and childishly sophomoric, which, of course, makes perfect sense. It is, after all, a kids movie. Unfortunately, there’s not a single thing in the film that will appeal to discerning adults, even if you are a card-carrying member of the cult of Miike. Based on the manga by Soubee Amako, the film follows the martial arts-related adventures of Rantaro, a young boy growing up in a poor ninja household. Once he comes of age,...

Ninja Kids!!! aka Nintama Rantarô
Written by Yoshio Urasawa, based on the manga Rakudai Ninja Rantaro by Soubee Amako
Directed by Takashi Miike
Japan, 2011
This year the Fantasia Film Festival have been running screenings they call “My First Fantasia” to encourage the next generation of obsessed film geeks. The screening of Ninja Kids!!! was an unofficial extension of those screenings with a good third of the audience around ten years old.
There was a lot for them to enjoy in Miike’s colourful adaptation of Amako’s gag manga. Mixed with the slapstick and the poop jokes was a naive but touching story of a young boy from a very unsuccessful Ninja family learning what it takes to be a great Ninja.
Between the over-sized glasses of our hero Rantarō and the wacky Ninja school setting, there is a whiff of early Harry Potter to the film, mixed with buffoonish villains in Dick Tracy make-up.

Ann reports: The Yahoo! Japan website began streaming a new 70-second teaser trailer for Takashi Miike's live-action film adaptation of the long-running Nintama Rantaro ninja comedy anime series on Thursday. The film will open in Japan on July 23. In Nintama Rantaro, Seishirō Katō plays the title role of a ninja apprentice at an elite ninjutsu academy in historical Japan. As first-graders, Rantarō and his ninja-in-training friends are called "Nintama" — a contraction of the words "ninja" and "tamago" ("egg"). The television anime adaptation based on Soubee Amako's Rakudai Ninja Rantarō ninja gag manga, which debuted in 1993. There was already an animated film made in 1996, and a new anime film will open in March, before the live-action film's summer opening. A new teaser for Takashi Miike's upcoming live-action adaptation of Nintama Rantaro has been uploaded to the Warner Bros. channel on Yahoo! Japan. Based on a long-running gag manga by Sobee Amako,...

A while back it was announced that the Nhk anime series Nintama Rantaro would be made into a live-action film directed by Takashi Miike, following the success of his live-action adaptation of Yatterman least year.
Nintama Rantarō aimed at young children is based on Soubee Amako’s Rakudai Ninja Rantaro manga series, and revolves around young boy named Rantaro who’s born into a ninja family in Sengoku period Japan. In order to become an elite ninja, he’s sent to a ninjutsu school where he and his fellow first-graders are referred to as “Nintama”, short for Ninja Tamago.
This adds yet another film to Miike’s busy schedule which already includes the remake of Thirteen Assassins (a big-budget live-action adaptation of Takeru), and Nikkatsu’s Sushi Typhoon.

For some, Takashi Miike is kind of becoming like your favorite local indie band. They had a fresh sound. You saw them play for the first time in an elementary school gym with shitty acoustics and bathroom urinals that only came up to you knees. You would drive for hours to see them play in small town curling rinks. You followed them as they started to get into shows and clubs. Then other people started to take notice and the crowds got bigger, the venues larger and guys with lanyards and VIP passes were ushering them into the dark corners of the clubs and you no longer heard their songs on Am but FM radio. Bastards! They've sold out! They've gone mainstream! They're no longer that little indie band but are now talking to boys wearing makeup on MuchMusic.
Dicks!
The more Takashi Miike enters into mainstream film the more...

Earlier today it was announced that the Nhk anime series “Nintama Rantaro” will be made into a live-action film directed by Takashi Miike. Miike of course has recent experience adapting a childrens’ anime series after having directed the live-action adaptation of Yatterman least year. Yatterman was a pretty big success at the box office due to its cross-generational appeal, so it makes sense for Miike to be hired for a similar project.
