In today's Horror Highlights, we have a Q&A with The Gracefield Incident at Mathieu Ratthe, new stills from Volumes of Blood: Horror Stories, and details on Famous Monsters of Filmland's presence at this year's San Diego Comic-Con.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Mathieu. How and when did you first come up with the idea for The Gracefield Incident?
Mathieu Ratthe: First of all, thank you, Derek, for your interest in our film. I wanted to create a suspenseful story that scared the crap out of the audience, but also made them emotionally involved, which is really tough to do in this kind of movie, but I think we achieved it pretty well in our film.
The conceptual idea (or I liked to call it the “technique”) came after I realized how many days I was given to shoot our film with the budget that I had.

We recently reviewed the popular 1972 TV movie The Dephi Bureau, which is the pilot for the short-lived espionage TV series starring Laurence Luckinbill. Some of our readers made us aware of the fact that the Warner Archive DVD release is actually an edited version of the broadcast version. We wrote to the Archive and received this prompt response from Matthew Patterson:
"Thanks for the heads up. It's actually good to know that this TV movie still has such fans. Unfortunately, this was a known issue going into the production process. All of the 35mm original negative and intermediate elements were all cut to the current (shorter) length. This was a very unusual case, and the only longer version we could track down that survived was in faded 16mm reference prints. Of course all this was done 40 yrs ago, and no one back then anticipated future distribution such as home video,...

They say unseen footage will be shown. Now, this is subjective, because we only had 11 episodes air in the United States, two more on the DVD / Blu-Ray release and a few more have aired overseas for those that can find them for download, so more than likely it will be one of these epsiodes, but we don't have confirmation yet. I will update you when I find out more.

Superheroes do such brisk business at the multiplex these days that it's easy to forget they weren't always framed in big budget franchises in their screen ventures, and that there are decades of past adaptations, the small screen's faded kiddie serials, failed pilots turned TV movies and low-budget animation, that have been allowed to fade from memory. But never fear, the Warner Archive Collection is here to assure that forgotten TV doesn't stay that way. The service, which may be best known to Indiewire readers for releasing rare and previously unreleased films from Warner's vault, also handles TV from Warner Bros. Television, Hanna-Barbera and other libraries. Staffers Matthew Patterson and Dw Ferranti, hosts of the Warner Archive Podcast, were at New York Comic Con this past weekend to showcase some of the comic book-friendly treasures and curiosities Warner Archive has put out, and some that they showcased just for the fun of it.
