One scene in 3 Body Problem delayed the show for months, co-showrunner Dan Weiss reveals. An adaptation of Liu Cixin's novel of the same name, the new Netflix sci-fi series follows a fateful decision made in 1960s China that reverberates across space and time and forces a group of scientists in the present day to face a great threat to humanity. The 3 Body Problem cast includes Jovan Adepo, John Bradley, Rosalind Chao, Liam Cunningham, Eiza González, Jess Hong, Marlo Kelly, Alex Sharp, Benedict Wong, and Jonathan Pryce.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Weiss and Netflix executive Peter Friedlander revealed that one scene in 3 Body Problem delayed the show for months. Netflix’s 3 Body Problem was actually finished and ready to be released on the streamer in mid-2023.
But showrunners David Benioff, Dan Weiss and Alexander Woo realized their sci-fi epic adaptation of Liu Cixin’s acclaimed novels was missing something: Their first episode quickly plunged viewers into a mystery surrounding the suicides of top scientists and a mix of brainy characters — but too quickly and, even, rather confusingly.
So they crafted a scene to be shot and inserted near the very beginning, of Auggie (Eiza González) and Jin (Jess Hong) having a drink in a bar. The five-minute scene accomplishes an extraordinary amount of heavily lifting in a very short time. The scene introduces Auggie and Jin, gives them a chance to literally spell out their respective careers (when they’re approached by a drunken flirt), gives some sense of their romantic lives (like when Auggie gets a call...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for 3 Body Problem.] If you watched Game of Thrones and participated in its social media discourse, you’ve likely seen the unfinished horse drawing meme. The back half of the horse is a gorgeously rendered, realistic depiction. The drawing gets less and less detailed as you look across the image. The Game of Thrones season numbers are shown above it to reflect the deterioration of detail across the eight seasons, culminating in a final season and series finale that not only fans couldn’t believe, but also left the show’s stars gobsmacked. This detail downturn was in part because Game of Thrones ran out of book material by the end of Season 5. The creators of the Emmy-winning HBO drama, D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, have tackled another heavily detailed novel in their first show since Game of Thrones ended, 3 Body Problem. Have they redeemed themselves with this new complicated and heady...

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses major plot developments in Season 1, Episode 3 of “3 Body Problem,” currently streaming on Netflix.
When David Benioff and D.B. Weiss first approached John Bradley about starring in their new series, “3 Body Problem,” they explained that his character would in many ways be the antithesis of the role that launched the actor’s career on their previous show, “Game of Thrones.” On that series, Bradley’s Samwell Tarly was a deferential and soft-spoken nobleman forced to forsake his fortune and standing for a life of anonymity. On “3 Body Problem,” Bradley’s Jack Rooney is a brash and self-possessed working class kid who chooses to give up a career in academia to build a fortune in snack foods.
It wasn’t until Bradley received the first set of scripts for “3 Body Problem,” however, that he understood that Jack had a more fundamental difference from Sam: He’s brutally murdered.

The role quickly catapulted her to global fame. Here dedication to the character can be deduced from the fact that even death did not scare her.

While 3 Body Problem hasn't scored a season renewal at this time, production won't take long to begin on a potential Season 2 if Netflix moves forward with renewing the series.
Now streaming on Netflix, 3 Body Problem is a new adaptation of the Chinese novel by Liu Cixin. It comes in part from David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the creators of Game of Thrones, HBO's adaptation of George R. R. Martin's literary works, as they developed the Netflix series with Alexander Woo. Speaking about the future of the show with GamesRadar's Inside Total Film podcast, Woo stated how the team is hopeful that the show will be able to span several seasons to allow them to finish the story they want to tell. He also confirmed that there's already a game plan in mind for Season 2.

The reactions to Netflix’s sci-fi epic 3 Body Problem are, if anything, inconsistent. The reviews from top critics are all over the place, from lavish praise to disses and everything in between. Viewers are similarly split, with some fans of Liu Cixin’s novel criticizing the series for its bold adaptive choices, and many others saying 3 Body Problem is one of the best genre shows they’ve ever watched (one might say it’s a chaotic era of 3 Body Problem reactions). Yet among fans who have finished the show so far, one consistent reaction is emerging: The show’s cliffhanger ending (no spoilers here) left them really wanting to see what happens next.

John Bradley's Sam survives in Game of Thrones, but the same is not true for his 3 Body Problem character, Jack. Benioff and Weiss, who also created HBO's Game of Thrones, enjoyed getting to kill off Bradley's character in 3 Body Problem. Bradley found his character's early and brutal death in the series to be a surprising twist, and one audience may not have expected given his previous role as Sam.

Based on Liu Cixin's Hugo Award-winning novel from 2008, 3 Body Problem portrays humanity gearing up for an extraterrestrial invasion. The controversial opening sequence is set in 1966 during the Chinese Cultural Revolution at a Beijing university. In the scene, a physics professor is brutally assaulted by the Communist Red Guards for opposing government ideologies, all while a mocking crowd observes. The series trended on Chinese social media with CNN reporting that it had incited "nationalist anger" in China. Some viewers accused Hollywood of intentionally portraying China in a negative light through its depiction of the Red Guards.

Alien invasion stories have been a standard part of film and television for quite some time. Be it Independence Day, Pacific Rim, or even Avengers, blockbusters and science fiction television have always had a place to comfortably market stories about heroic teams coming together to beat a sufficiently advanced extraterrestrial threat.

However, it seems that Netflix has decided to attempt to break the mold with its latest offering, 3 Body Problem, which is an adaptation of the seminal science fiction novel by Chinese author Liu Cixin. It can be assumed that the team behind the show, led by D.B.Weiss and David Benioff, actually managed to pull it off, as a recommendation to watch the show has come straight from the X handle of Hideo Kojima.

“3 Body Problem” production designer Deborah Riley is no stranger to creating epic environments — she won four consecutive Emmys for her work on “Game of Thrones.”
Netflix’s new series reunites Riley with creators David Benioff and D.B Weiss. “That show was vast insofar as cold and hot environments and in its scope and scale, but I had no idea what the term meant until ‘3 Body Problem,’” Riley says, comparing the two shows.
Adapted from the Chinese science-fiction saga by Cixin Liu, the series opens with the Cultural Revolution. Young scientist Ye Wenjie (Zine Tseng) watches as her father is beaten to death in front of a crowd by the Red Guard. She’s sent to a top-secret base on the Red Coast where she learns that the Chinese government has been sending transmissions hoping to make contact. The genius mind suggests pointing it at the sun and so a chain of events unfolds,...

Netflix’s acclaimed new sci-fi epic 3 Body Problem is getting some heated reactions from viewers in China, while its opening scene is drawing praise among some conservatives in the United States.
The big budget adaptation of Liu Cixin’s Hugo Award-winning 2008 novel tells the story of humanity preparing for an alien invasion. The show’s opening is set in 1966 and depicts a Chinese Cultural Revolution struggle session at a Beijing university where a physics professor is brutally beaten by Red Guards for his refusal to conform to government beliefs before a jeering crowd.
It’s a sequence that’s crucial to the story and direct from the novel but was notably not depicted in the 30-episode Chinese adaptation of the book by Tencent which was released on streamers last year. (The Chinese Communist Party has been accused of trying to erase the Cultural Revolution and its atrocities from history and pop culture.

Based on the sprawling 2006 sci-fi novel "The Three-Body Problem" by Liu Cixin, Netflix's new series "3 Body Problem" is an ambitious tale that takes place across multiple time frames, and boasts an interweaving narrative involving space aliens, an invasion from the planet Trisolaris, and a strange, climate-disaster-themed virtual reality video game. Cixin's novel was the first in a three-book series called "Remembrance of Earth's Past," a series with deeply involved mythology complex enough to rival "Dune." One might require a quick read-up on the Fermi Paradox, the Alcubierre Drive, and notions of quantum entanglement before cracking it.
All eight episodes of "3 Body Problem" will debut on the same day, and it looks to be as ambitious as the book. The series will star notable actors like Benedict Wong, Jovan Adepo, Eiza González, Rosalind Chao, and Jonathan Pryce. The showrunners, perhaps to save themselves massive headaches, have declared openly...

As quickly as it started, Netflix’s eight-episode “3 Body Problem” ends, in a blur of VR headsets and scientist murders and that one time they sliced up a ship like bologna.
Though it hasn’t been greenlit yet, creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo have plans for Season 2, and Cixin Liu’s book series is a trilogy. Even if this is the end for now, the story remains open-ended. So what should viewers make of the finale?
What matters most is the foundation laid in previous episodes. An alien civilization called the San-Ti is headed toward Earth, expected to arrive in over 400 years. Though their original goal was to conquer Earth and escape their own tri-solar system, they realized that human technology would advance and likely surpass the San-Ti’s by the time they arrive. “This is a funeral procession,” their VR avatar says in a previous episode.

“Game of Thrones” creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have returned for their next act with a bold new science fiction series that is as entertaining as it is full of big ideas. The Emmy-winning duo teams with Alexander Woo (“The Terror: Infamy”) for Netflix’s “3 Body Problem,” an adaptation of Liu Cixin’s Chinese novel “The Three-Body Problem,” which is the first in a trilogy that was once deemed unadaptable. But hey, we’re all about proving people wrong these days.

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss won't be heading to a galaxy far, far away anytime soon.
After finding success on Game of Thrones, Benioff and Weiss were tapped by Lucasfilm to develop a planned trilogy of Star Wars films. By 2019, they were off the project, announcing in a statement at the time that they were "regretfully stepping away" as they felt they couldn't "do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects." However, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said at the time that the company was open to including the two "in the journey forward when they are able to step away from their busy schedule to focus on Star Wars." However, in a new interview for the Total Film Podcast (per ComicBook.com), the duo has cast doubt on that possibility.

Independence is crucial for Game of Thrones showrunners Benioff and Weiss, which is why they are no longer considering creating a Star Wars movie. Benioff explained that established franchises like Star Wars limit the creative freedom they prefer in their projects. Despite limiting its creators' independence, Lucasfilm's control over Star Wars ensures business success whil still allowing for truly original content to be made.
Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were once supposed to create a Star Wars movie, but they are no longer considering working with the franchise. Benioff and Weiss originally pitched a Star Wars trilogy about the first Jedi, but the plans to create it were scrapped. While it would later become James Mangold's Dawn of the Jedi, Benioff and Weiss weren't asked to return. Now, it seems they may never come back for another Star Wars movie and are instead focusing on other projects.

Based on Liu Cixin's sci-fi novel of the same name, 3 Body Problem was practically tailor-made for contemporary binge-watching audiences. The series is far from simple; it's a tangled tale that weaves together ancient Chinese history, virtual reality, gaming, ecolological ruin and particle physics into a race against time and an existentialist and extraterrestrial threat to humanity. 16 years after the novel's publication and ensuing cult status, the beloved sci-fi parable finally hit the screens as a streaming series. It was adapted by none other than streaming service giant and trendsetter Netflix, and Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
With a story spanning across decades and nations plus an enormous and interconnected international cast, 3 Body Problem is perfect for those who still hunger for the drama, violence and moral ambiguity of the Golden Age of Television. This beloved era was defined by groundbreaking hits such as Game of Thrones,...

Ramin Djawadi, the composer who wrote one of the most recognizable, hummable opening credits themes of all time, is teaming up again with Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss as well as co-showrunner Alexander Woo on a very different series, 3 Body Problem.
Instead of dragons and fantastical turf wars, the speculative sci-fi thriller immerses you in existential mysteries and the lives of an international cast of characters while transporting you through multiple chronologies, dimensions, and continents.
Tying so many epic storylines and ambitious themes together is Djawadi’s sophisticated score, which experiments with character-driven melodies, ominous rhythms meant to evoke otherworldly communications, abstract sound design — and a strategically timed Lana Del Rey classic. Read on for more on Djawadi’s process working with Benioff and Weiss on 3 Body Problem’s opening credits theme and scoring some of the most dramatic moments in the series.

This post contains spoilers for season 1 of Netflix's "3 Body Problem."
"3 Body Problem" is no "Game of Thrones." The new Netflix series may share two of its co-creators with the HBO fantasy epic (it's the first series from David Benioff and D.B. Weiss since that show signed off in 2019), but where that show's bread and butter was sword-slashing fantasy, this one offers a hefty dose of cerebral science fiction.
It's a story about scientists trying to save the world (and trying to decide whether or not it's even worth saving at all) by solving a strange series of intergalactic problems, and though it's densely plotted, it's also safe to say it's a bit of a slow burn. By the end of season 1, the aliens who have revealed themselves as the main existential threat to humankind are, after all, still 400 years away from touching down on Earth. "3 Body Problem...

Plot: A young woman’s fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time into the present day. When the laws of nature inexplicably unravel before their eyes, a close-knit group of brilliant scientists join forces with an unorthodox detective to confront the greatest threat in humanity’s history.
Review: As soon as it was announced that Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff were developing 3 Body Problem alongside Alexander Woo, I grabbed the novel and read it. The dense first entry in Liu Cixin’s trilogy was a fascinating look at science fiction from a Chinese vantage point with heavy political implications from the nation’s storied history. In translating the book for the screen, 3 Body Problem incorporates many of the cultural elements from the novel into a global and diverse narrative that sets the table for an ongoing series about humanity fighting against an extraterrestrial foe.

Got science questions? Yeah, us too.
If you’ve raced through 3 Body Problem, the new series from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and True Blood writer Alexander Woo, chances are you want to know more about everything from Sophons and nanofibers to what actually constitutes a three-body problem. After all, even the show’s scientists are stumped when they witness their theories unravel at the seams.
The eight-episode series, based on writer Cixin Liu's internationally celebrated Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy, defies human science and takes us on a mind-boggling journey that spans continents and timelines. The story begins in ’60s China, when a young woman makes a fateful decision that reverberates across space and time into the present day. With humanity’s future in danger, a group of tight-knit scientists, dubbed the Oxford Five, must work against time to save the world from catastrophic consequences.

When news dropped that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss would be helming a new TV show for Netflix — after a disastrous finale for Game of Thrones and a few failed follow-up projects — obviously, there was a lot of apprehension. The duo was announced to be teaming up with Alexander Woo (best known for his work on True Blood and Season 2 of The Terror) to take on the ambitious task of adapting Liu Cixin's extraordinarily popular sci-fi book series Remembrance of Earth’s Past. If that sounds unfamiliar, you might recognize the first book in Liu’s series better: The Three-Body Problem.
