“Survivor 45” made history once again last week as Kaleb Gebrewold successfully played his Shot in the Dark to a unanimous vote against him, breaking the record with 11 votes cast for him, two more than when Kelley Wentworth back in “Survivor: Second Chance” played an immunity idol negating nine votes against her. Let’s break down what events transpired that led up to this groundbreaking moment as the tribes converged to one beach.
After the ouster of Brando Meyer in the last episode, Kendra McQuarrie was on the warpath and wanted revenge on Emily Flippen for lying to her, and siding with the Reba duo of Austin Li Coon and Drew Basile. The next day, right before the boats arrived to pick the tribes up to unite with everyone, Bruce Perreault was able to find the new Lulu idol underneath the shelter and shared it with the whole tribe, minus Katurah Topps.

Since the creation of the Shot in the Dark twist at the start of the “new era” that began with “Survivor 41,” several castaways have tried using the one-in-six advantage to save their ailing games, but no one ever had luck on their side. Until now. Warning: this article contains spoilers from “Survivor 45,” Episode 6, so read at your own risk!
After the remaining 13 players attended a group tribal council in the pre-merge phase of the game, Kaleb Gebrewold knew he was in danger. He tried pegging J. Maya Krishnan-Jha as a bigger threat, but it didn’t seem to work. One by one, each player went to the cast their votes and all of them wrote down Kaleb’s name. Kaleb, having been warned by Emily Flippen that his game was hanging from a thread, didn’t vote and instead opted to play his Shot in the Dark.

“Survivor 45” contestant Hannah Rose wants it to be known that though she got her Master’s degree in counseling, she does not plan on counseling any of her fellow competitors. The 33-year-old therapist from Baltimore has, however, prescribed herself as “platonically in love with” Jeff Probst, who she refers to as “heartthrob.” Watch their full CBS interview below.
Hannah says she’s fascinated by the show from a “psychological standpoint” ever since she first watched it, but makes a point of wanting to “not play like the last two therapists that were on the show.” She is, of course, referring to Elie Scott and Tori Meehan who did not make great use of their clinical strengths. She suggests that, unlike them, she doesn’t want to “underestimate any of the people around [her].”

At the start of the “new era” of “Survivor” that began with the reality TV show’s 41st season, Jeff Probst introduced a twist known as the Shot in the Dark. This die gives a player a one-in-six chance of receiving safety at tribal council, in exchange for them not voting. A handful of contestants tried their luck at pulling the “Safe” scrolls during “Survivor 41,” “Survivor 42” and “Survivor 43,” but all of them ended up with “Not Safe” scrolls instead. Well, that all changed during the season premiere of “Survivor 44.”
After the Ratu tribe lost the first immunity challenge of the season, Jaime Lynn Ruiz felt nervous back at camp. Even though she and the other two girls, Maddy Pomilla and Lauren Harpe, were planning an epic blindside of NFL player Brandon Cottom in order to flush his not-so-hidden immunity idol, Jaime still felt the need to play her Shot in the Dark.

“Survivor 42” saw the exit of one of its biggest power players last week when Hai Giang was blindsided by his former allies. The 28-year-old data scientist had been in the majority alliance post-merge, but (former) ally Omar Zaheer orchestrated his demise by telling a lie to Hai’s closest confidant, Mike Turner, which started the ball rolling. While Jonathan Young was the more obvious target due to his physical strength, Omar got his way and Hai was voted out of the game by a decisive 6-2 vote, and fans mostly agree with the move.

“Survivor 42” viewers are split on the poll results of last week’s highly debated episode. The hour ended with two Tribal Councils, one of them booting Rocksroy Bailey in a blindside and the other taking out Tori Meehan nearly by process of elimination. While fans believed that Rocksroy deserved to be voted out, they were significantly less enthused with Tori’s ouster, believing another castaway should have been sent to the jury instead.

‘Survivor 42’ deleted scene: Jonathan Young reveals he ‘almost passed out’ from lack of food [Watch]
In this week’s “Survivor 42” deleted scene, Jonathan Young reveals he “almost passed out” on the island from a lack of food (watch above). Remember, this year the castaways are not provided with free rice by CBS — instead, they have to earn their sustenance through rewards or other means. The previously unseen moment comes on Day 17 after Jonathan’s group wins a food reward of beef and veggie kebobs. “Food has helped me think way more clear, play the game way harder and enjoy life,” Jonathan says in a confessional. “Because I gotta tell you, for 16 days I was not feeling great. I was getting to the point where I had to slow down from standing up. I almost passed out. But now that I have food, I feel so much better.”

One day after “Survivor” made headlines when two Black women, Maryanne Oketch and Drea Wheeler, openly addressed their feelings on racism and subconscious biases, Maryanne has thanked two of her white castaways for being allies. Lindsay Dolashewich and Tori Meehan “had every right to fight for their safety in the game once both idols were played,” Maryanne wrote on Instagram, “but instead, they chose to take a step back to actively listen to where I was coming from, and [empathize] with the burdens that I experience.” The 24-year-old seminary student from Ontario added that CBS’s reality TV show is at its core a “social game that is a microcosm of society.”

“Survivor 42” contestant Tori Meehan received one of the more unique exits in the show’s history in this week’s ninth episode. After the 10 players were divided into groups of five, the teams were instructed to attend separate Tribal Councils, with the order playing a major factor in Tori’s ouster. Tori and the rest of the orange group arrived at the second Tribal of the episode to see that Rocksroy Bailey had been surprisingly booted, which shifted plans so significantly that Tori saw her torch snuffed without a formal vote even taking place. In one of the most powerful tribal councils in the history of “Survivor,” two Black women — Drea Wheeler and Maryanne Oketch — stood up against racism at the end of the April 27 episode. The moment happened after host Jeff Probst split the remaining 10 players of “Survivor 42” into two groups of five. The first group voted out Rocksroy Bailey, making him the second Black person eliminated in a row after Chanelle Howell last week. When the second group entered tribal council, Drea and Maryanne both had strong reactions to seeing Chanelle and Rocksroy on the jury, and it sparked an entire discussion on racism and subconscious biases that went beyond the game.
Heading into tribal, Jonathan Young‘s plan was to boot out Drea because she had a hidden immunity idol (he wasn’t aware she actually had four advantages). But all bets were off after Rocksroy took a seat on the bench.

Tori Meehan makes ‘Survivor’ history by winning first 2 individual immunity challenges of the season
Over the course of the first 21 years and 41 seasons of “Survivor,” only one woman had won the first two individual immunity challenges of her season: Laura Morett in 2009’s “Survivor: Samoa.” Now, her long-standing record has been tied by Tori Meehan, who just claimed back-to-back victories in the first two individual immunity challenges of “Survivor 42.” Talk about girl power!
One caveat in mentioning this record is that Laura’s initial immunity win was actually awarded to the best performing male (John Fincher) and female (Laura) of that specific challenge. Tori didn’t have to share either of her two immunity necklaces, which puts her truly in a league of her own when it comes to making “Survivor” history.

The post-merge phase of “Survivor 42” began this week, with Chanelle Howell officially becoming the first member of the jury. Mike Turner, who had started the game with Chanelle as members of the Vati tribe, was the main proponent in wanting her out, considering she cast a stray vote against him in the pre-merge. This, combined with her lack of integration into the newly formed majority alliance caused her to be squeezed out of the game in episode 8. But do you think Chanelle deserved to be voted out this week? Vote in our poll below. (Note: Tori Meehan is not included as an option since she won immunity again.)
After the chaotic third episode of the season, where her choice to risk her vote at the summit caused her to lose it and thus, lead to the destruction of the majority alliance, Chanelle couldn’t really find her footing in the game.

And then there were 11. After last week’s eventual merge, the castaways still in the running to win “Survivor 42” were: Rocksroy Bailey, Tori Meehan, Romeo Escobar, Drea Wheeler, Jonathan Young, Maryanne Oketch, Omar Zaheer, Lindsay Dolashewich, Chanelle Howell, Hai Giang and Mike Turner. A leading alliance of eight people took control in last week’s episode, but with so many idols and advantages in play, there was no telling who might end up having their torch snuffed by Jeff Probst at the end of the hour. So how’d it all play out?

In CBS’s latest “Survivor 42” deleted scene, Mike Turner reflects on his life outside the game (watch above). The moment comes in the morning of Day 12 at the Vati tribe, hours before the “merge” that saw the 12 remaining players entering the individual phase of the competition. “The beauty out there is ridiculous,” says the 58-year-old retired firefighter from New Jersey as he gazes out at the ocean. “It’s amazing how infinite it looks. It’s peaceful, too.”
As angelic music plays in the background, Mike continues on, “We’re at the age now where we reflect on what we were, how we were, what we could have been, my kids, my wife.”

The ex-firefighter then wonders aloud, “You know the biggest regret you have? It’s not thanking the people who affected you in your life in a positive way. You kind of forget about stuff like that.

The “Survivor 42” merge has ushered in an exciting new phase of the game. Like the previous season, the controversial hourglass twist was implemented, allowing one player to flip the results of the previous reward challenge and make the winning team vulnerable. Like Erika Casupanan last year, Rocksroy Bailey elected to turn back time and made himself safe at the first merge vote, along with Chanelle Howell, Drea Wheeler, Mike Turner, Omar Zaheer and Romeo Escobar. This limited the pool of potential eliminations, with Lydia Meredith meeting her untimely demise. But do you think she was the right person to be the merge boot? Vote in our poll below.

Heading into the highly anticipated “merge” episode of “Survivor 42”, the Ika, Taku and Vati tribes were all even at four members apiece. However, even though host Jeff Probst told them to “drop your buffs,” he then added it’s “not exactly” a merge. “In fact, you are not merged. You will not be officially merged until after the next tribal council. Like everything else in this game, you are going to earn your way into the merge,” he told the 12 remaining players. So how did tonight’s two-hour episode play out?

At the start of the fifth episode of “Survivor 42,” the Ika tribe reacted to voting out Swati Goel, whose lies finally caught up with her after they realized they were all her “number one” ally. Oops! That brought Ika down to four members, tying them with the Taku tribe. The Vati tribe, meanwhile, was still in the lead with five people. So which group lost immunity on Wednesday night and had to vote out another player?

In CBS’s sneak peek video for the fifth episode of “Survivor 42,” the Ika tribe returns to camp after voting out Swati Goel and they immediately start talking about the need to stay a “strong four.” But Tori Meehan (aka the therapist who’s lying about her profession) balks at the idea of unity. “Four strong literally makes me laugh,” she declares in a private confessional. “I sit there and I just literally [think], ‘No, no, no, no, no.’ I am gonna be the first person to jump ship.” Watch the “Survivor 42” episode 5 sneak peek video above.

In last week’s fourth episode, the Ika tribe confessed to host Jeff Probst that they still hadn’t “become one” yet. They hoped that by sending home Swati, who was lying to each of them about being her “number one,” they would now gel together as a cohesive group.

“Survivor 42” fans agree that Swati Goel deserved to be voted out of last week’s episode. The Ivy League student had doled out too many promises to her tribemates, who subsequently compared notes and realized she was double-dealing. While Swati did try to use her Shot in the Dark die, fearing she was indeed in danger, she was ruled not safe and received a majority of votes at Tribal Council.
In our recent poll, asking you to pick which Ika tribe member deserved to be booted, Swati also earned most of the poll results. The 19-year-old received a whopping 49, a decisive choice. But for those that disagreed, it was between two names — Tori Meehan and Rocksroy Bailey. Tori earned 29 of the vote, with the 24-year-old therapist accidentally revealing too much information in a thwarted plan to take out Drea Wheeler. Meanwhile, Rocksroy, who earned 22 of the fan vote, has been...

Swati Goel saw her torch snuffed far sooner than some may have expected on this week’s episode of “Survivor 42.” The 19-year-old emerged as a power player on the Ika tribe in the first few episodes, making alliances with just about everyone. The tribe then proceeded to vote her out, but do you think her ouster was deserved? Vote in our poll below.

Throughout the first two episodes of “Survivor” Season 42, all we’ve seen of Tori Meehan is that she’s a tad paranoid and that she’s lying about her profession (she told her tribe mates she’s a caregiver despite actually being a therapist). In a new deleted scene, we learn something else about the 25-year-old therapist from Tulsa, Oklahoma: she thinks lizards taste “icky.” Warning: vegetarians may not want to watch the “Survivor 42” deleted scene above.
The two-minute unseen footage takes place on Day 4 at the Ika camp, shortly after the group unanimously voted out Zach Wurtenberger. Since this season doesn’t provide the castaways any rice for sustenance, Tori, Swati Goel and Romeo Escobar hunt for lizards at the water well. “We are on Day 4 and we are feeling the effects of the game,” Tori explains in a confessional. “No one else is looking for food. We need food.

Zach Wurtenberger had the unlucky distinction of being the first person voted out of “Survivor 42,” which premiered last week on CBS. The 22-year-old student started the game as an eager superfan, making early alliances with most of his tribemates. After losing the Immunity Challenge for his tribe, though, he was targeted by some of those same tribemates and was ultimately voted out unanimously. As it turns out, “Survivor” fans mostly agree with the tribe’s decision.
In our recent poll, which asked fans to pick who they think should have gone home from the Ika tribe, Zach earned a whopping 51% of the vote. The next highest was Tori Meehan at 29%, having caused a stir by going off alone into the jungle, with many of her tribemates assuming she was hunting for Hidden Immunity Idols. “Survivor 42” contestant Tori Meehan may seem like an innocent young woman, but make no mistake: she’s willing to do whatever it takes to win. The 25-year-old therapist from Tulsa, Oklahoma plans on making some big moves in the game. “I did not come here to be this nice, pretty girl who is boring and does nothing,” says Tori in her CBS interview. “I came to strategize, came to play, cut throats, crush dreams, win” (watch below).
Tori is used to people pre-judging her based on her appearance. She describes how when people meet her, they tend to say something along the lines of, “I thought you were gonna be a mean girl or stuck up, but then I got to know you and you’re actually super weird.” She notes that she is indeed weird, having written a sci-fi novella, participated in marching band and having a love for...

Just like last year, the 18 all-new cast members of “Survivor 42” will start out the game on three different tribes. Once again, the reality TV show features a wide range of diverse cast members from all walks of life. Scroll down to see which castaways are on each of the “Survivor 42” tribes: Ika, Taku and Vati.
