‘Giant Little Ones’ Director Keith Behrman on Defying Labels and Finding Authenticity in Adolescence
One of my favorite things about going to the Toronto International Film Festival is finding the time to see the smaller movies that aren’t on everyone’s must-see lists. While the gamble sometimes turns out to be a dud, the risk is easily justified when you’re able to discover a work as genuinely memorable as Keith Behrman’s Giant Little Ones in the process.
A film about adolescence that isn’t afraid to delve into sexuality’s ever-broadening landscape of experimentation and fluidity with still violent repercussions, this story of two best friends falling prey to the social implications of such puts toxic masculinity in the spotlight. Behrman looks at the herd culture of kids desperate to conform to some archaic ideal before then bullying those who don’t in order to uphold their sense of superiority. And while he focuses mostly upon a boy who’s bearing the brunt of that backlash,...

Exclusive: Vertical Entertainment has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Giant Little Ones, the coming-of-age drama from Canadian director Keith Behrman that had its world premiere earlier this fall as a Toronto Film Festival special presentation. The plan is for a March 2019 platform theatrical release.
Josh Wiggins, Darren Mann, Taylor Hickson, Maria Bello and Kyle MacLachlan star in the pic, which centers on Franky Winter (Wiggins) and Ballas Kohl (Mann) who have been best friends since childhood. They are high school royalty – handsome, stars of the swim team and popular with girls. They live the perfect teenage life, until the night of Franky’s epic 17th birthday party when Franky and Ballas are involved in an unexpected incident that changes their lives forever.
Allison Black produced, with Patrice Theroux, Bello, Nathan Morlando, Ricky Blumenstein, Jason Potash, Paul Finkel, Hussain Amarshi, Daniel Bekerman, Mark Gingras and John Laing as executive producers.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Tepid teen romance turned implausible thriller is just about saved by a powerful, and unusually disturbing, performance from Bill Paxton (one of his last). I’m “biast” (pro): love Bill Paxton
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Alas that the most interesting thing about Mean Dreams is that it is the second-to-last performance from Bill Paxton that we will ever get, and a doozy of a performance at that. (Paxton will also appear in The Circle, opening wide in the Us in April, which I have not yet seen; I don’t think any critics have.) Alas for Paxton fans (I am a huge one); alas for The Movies, which will no longer enjoy the understated appeal of his solid presence; and alas for this particular movie, that he makes the rest of it look just...

In a year filled with shocking and untimely celebrity deaths, Bill Paxton’s passing has been especially devastating for the Hollywood community. His spirit and vitality on and off set has left even those who never knew him feeling as if they’d lost an old friend.
For his real friends — those who saw his energy and love for life everyday — his death last month at the age of 61 still feels like an impossible mistake. Nathan Morlando, who directed Paxton on his final film shoot for the indie-thriller Mean Dreams, opens up to People about losing a friend and a unique talent.

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
20th Century Women (Mike Mills)
That emotional profundity most directors try to build to across an entire film? Mike Mills achieves it in every scene of 20th Century Women. There’s such a debilitating warmness to both the vibrant aesthetic and construction of its dynamic characters as Mills quickly soothes one into his story that you’re all the more caught off-guard as the flurry of emotional wallops are presented.

Domestic violence and puppy love aren’t exactly as natural a cinematic pairing as, say, odd couples and wacky misunderstandings. Yet these two elements, along with hard drinkin’ and corruption, constitute the whole of director Nathan Morlando’s “Mean Dreams,” the recently deceased Bill Paxton’s penultimate film. Paxton plays Wayne Caraway, a police officer and father of 15-year-old Casey (Sophie Nélisse, “The Book Thief”). At the beginning of the film, they’ve just moved to a rural part of Canada for reasons unrevealed. Casey immediately meets their neighbor’s teen son, Jonas (Josh Wiggins, “Max”), when her dog wanders off in the woods,...

An aside: I find it to be a personal obligation to mention the untimely passing of Bill Paxton, whose consistently vivid performances will be sorely missed within the cinematic landscape for years to come and to whom I tip my hat. Fortunately, his hard-bit turn in Nathan Morlando’s slice of rural neo-noir, Mean Dreams, wonderfully encapsulates why he was so damn good. At the same time, I also feel it is my responsibility to look at the film around him, and objectively consider its craft and impact without the need to tiptoe.
Nathan Morlando’s second feature, penned by first-time writers Kevin Coughlin and Ryan Grassby, is a thriller both intimate in scale and raw in execution. Casey Caraway (Sophie Nélisse) has just moved into a farmhouse with her father, Wayne (Paxton), who has more bark and bite than their dog — and also happens to be a cop. She soon runs into her neighbor,...

The new trailer for the upcoming thriller Mean Dreams carries the tragic burden of including one of the final roles completed by the late Bill Paxton. The actor, who recently passed away at the age of 61, is beloved by fans of blockbusters and independent film alike, having built a career that spanned four decades. He delivered memorable roles in every genre, but it seems as though this particular parting gift might well be one for the ages. Featuring a nuanced amplification of the kind of disturbing violence contained in his own directorial debut, Frailty, Bill Paxton looms over this promotional footage of Mean Dreams with a terrifying intensity.
Directed by Nathan Morlando (Gangster), and with a script that marks the feature length debut of writers Kevin Coughlin and Ryan Grassby, Mean Dreams centres on two teenagers and their attempts to escape their abusive domestic situations while falling in love in rural America.

"I wouldn't get too attached to that boy..." An official international trailer has debuted for an indie film titled Mean Dreams, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year (in the Directors' Fortnight sidebar) and also played at the Deauville Film Festival and Tiff. The stylish romantic thriller is about Casey and Jonas, two teens desperate to escape their broken and abusive homes after falling in love. This stars Sophie Nélisse as Casey and Josh Wiggins (from Hellion, Max) as Jonas, along with Bill Paxton and Colm Feore. I caught this film at Cannes last year and it's solid, an enjoyable and thrilling story about young lovers. The lead performances are outstanding, making the film better than it really is. Worth a look. Here's the new official trailer (+ poster) for Nathan Morlando's Mean Dreams, direct from YouTube: Mean Dreams is a thriller about a fifteen-year-old boy who steals...

Young love can be an intense experience, but even more so if you're on the run from an abusive cop father with a bag full of drug money.
Mean Dreams follows the budding romance between Casey Caraway (Sophie Nélisse) and Jonas Ford (Josh Wiggins), two young teenagers who live in the farmlands and come from very different families. Jonas works with his father on the farm, while Casey is new to town, as her cop father has just been relocated. We get a glimpse into the abusive nature of Casey's father, played by Bill Paxton, but the situation becomes extreme and leads Jonas and Casey on the run.

Bill Paxton is back in familiar territory with Nathan Morlando’s family drama/thriller, “Mean Dreams,” as the film returns the actor to the role of unhinged patriarch that he so chillingly played in his own directorial debut, “Frailty.” Paxton stars in the film alongside “The Book Thief” breakout Sophie Nélisse and up-and-comer Josh Wiggins in the Canadian filmmaker’s feature debut. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and recently screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.

I love a good country thriller and it's been some time since I’ve seen a really great one (though as I understand it there's been at least one this year) but the first clip from Nathan Morlando's Mean Dreams definitely suggested some good things to come from the film and from the looks of this newly minted trailer, we're in for a great ride.

Director Nathan Morlando made a bit of a splash a couple of years ago with his feature film debut Edwin Boyd, a period heist movie I wasn't particularly impressed with but which suggested Morlando showed potential given the right material and with his sophomore feature, it seems he may have found his stride.

After a promising initial line-up, the Toronto International Film Festival has delivered more titles with their full Canadian slate. Among the line-up is Xavier Dolan‘s It’s Only the End of the World, Bruce MacDonald‘s new feature Weirdos, Deepa Mehta‘s Anatomy of Violence, as well as Two Lovers and a Bear, starring Tatiana Maslany and Dane DeHaan, which we have the first trailer for today.
We said in our review from Cannes, “Kim Nguyen’s Two Lovers and a Bear is a film that suffers from a bit of an identity crisis. Like an indie playlist stuck on constant shuffle, unapologetically reveling in a sort of manic unclassifiable genre. This isn’t always necessarily a bad thing, but, for some reason, Nguyen’s scattershot tonal shifts — which hop between a romance on the rocks; a self-serious study of grieving; and a surreal buddy comedy — can prove quite jarring.

For a Canadian filmmaker, having your film play at the Toronto International Film Festival is a pretty big deal.
One of the biggest film festivals in the world (and with the amount of films, quantitatively, Tiff plays more new movies than anywhere else), launching your new film at not just a prestigious event, but in a place that you can call home, is a beautiful thing.
As Canadians, we take a certain pride in our homegrown cinema, and Tiff is a major launching pad for these films. Today the festival revealed all of the Canadian films that are playing throughout various programs in the festival, adding to the already announced Special Presentations and Galas, and giving us a sneak peek into the Tiff Documentaries, Masters (films made by iconic directors), Contemporary World Cinema,...

The Toronto International Film Festival has announced an additional selection of feature picks — all falling under the banner of Canadian-made films, appropriately enough — along with their Tiff Rising Stars group, the recipient of the Len Blum Residency and a selection of Canadian shorts. Major programming standouts including Xavier Dolan’s Cannes Grand Prix winner “It’s Only the End of the World” and Nathan Morlando’s Cannes debut “Mean Dreams.” Other films of note include April Mullen’s “Below Her Mouth” and Kim Nguyen’s Dane DeHaan-starring “Two Lovers and a Bear.”
This year’s Tiff Rising Stars — four Canadian actors who will take part in a series of specialized programming organized by Tiff’s Industry team — include Jared Abrahamson, Grace Glowicki, Mylène Mackay and Sophie Nélisse. Additional international Rising Stars will be announced in the coming weeks.

Bill Paxton is not the nice guy everyone's always saying he is - just ask Bill Paxton. The Big Love star set the record straight while promoting his new film Mean Dream at the Cannes Film Festival. Paxton, known as one of the nicest in Hollywood, says he's relished playing the villain in the film about two teenagers desperate to escape their broken homes. "I find that when you play the villain, usually they have a better justification than the protagonist - and they're always more interesting because of that," the actor tells People and Entertainment Weekly alongside his director,...

It won’t be the first film about the Somali pirates to come out, but it might be the only one that claims to be told from the pirates’ perspective. In an interview with THR, Jim Sturgess confirmed his role in “The Lion’s Share,” an indie to be directed by Nathan Morlando (“Citizen Gangster”), and while the foundation of his part in the film is innocent enough -- "I play a journalist who basically goes to try and uncover that story and that world" -- it tackles the issue from an unexpected angle. "[It's] set in Africa, based on the point of view of the Somali pirates," the actor explained. "I was really blown away when I read the script. It really gives a voice and a perspective to a big problem. But you see the origins and foundation of where the problem came from. And, of course, it comes...

Like American outlaws Jesse James and John Dillinger, in the late 1940s and early 1950s Canada had Edwin Boyd, our own notorious bank robber who somehow managed to gain public support and become a media darling.
In director Nathan Morlando's Edwin Boyd: Citizen Gangster, Toronto native Scott Speedman (The Vow, Barney's Version) plays Boyd, a World War II vet who returns home to Toronto with dreams of becoming a Hollywood star. But he also has a wife (Kelly Reilly) and young family to support, and after being rejected by a Toronto acting school and quitting his job as a bus driver, he starts robbing banks to pay the bills, using his charm and flair for the dramatic to do it with style.
We spoke with Speedman, who earned a Best Actor Genie nomination for his performance, after the movie’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Edwin Alonzo Boyd was one of Canada’s prominent bank robbers following World War II. A splashy, glamorous war vet with a flair for theatrics, he managed to swindle several financial institutions in between two daring prison breaks, all in the name of his wife and children. And yet, the reason why this story hasn’t circulated all that much before “Citizen Gangster” is because Boyd’s story really is a whole lot like any other bank robbers'. Once you’ve seen a few of these movies, there’s not a whole lot of variation.
Scott Speedman is Boyd, a veteran-turned-working stiff who can’t seem to hold onto a job, either due to restlessness or a rough-and-tumble economy. Feeling the crunch of wife Doreen (Kelly Reilly) and their two kids, he also can’t escape his thirst for showmanship. In the first scene, he returns home with bad news banging around in his head,...

As we roll into Berlin where War Witch (aka Rebelle) (Isa: Films Distribution) by Kim Nguyen is in Competition. While it’s Kim’s 4th feature, this is the first of his films to have a world premiere at an international festival. This is exceptional as well because the last time the Canadians had a Canadian director in Competition at the Berlinale was in 1999 with Emporte-Moi ! Guy Madden’s Keyhole holds a Berlinale Special slot. Guy is Canada’s cultural ambassador in Berlin and a regular at the Festival and sat on the Berlinale’s Official Jury last year – with Isabella Rossellini.
Sheldon Larry’s Leave It on the Floor (Isa: Arrow) is a U.S.-Canadian Co-pro which has played Laff, Tiff and is now in the Panorama.
Films in the Forum include Green Laser by another Berlinale favorite, John Greyson. Green Laser is his 8th film at the festival. His first was Urinal in 1989. Denis Côté’s Bestiary, straight from Sundance, and Francine, the first narrative feature by Melanie Shatzky (Canada) and Brian M. Cassidy (U.S.) the team that directed Patron Saints (Tiff 2011, Rotterdam 2012) are are all in the Forum.
4 films are in the Forum Expanded:
Chris Kennedy’s 349 (For Sol LeWitt)(1min long!) in Tiff 2011 Wavelength Program: Schedule
American Colour, Tiff 2011 Wavelength Program: Schedule
Road Movie by Elle Flanders and Tamira Sawatzkystarring Melissa Leo (Frozen River) Tiff 2011 Future Projections: Schedule, a 6-channel installation produced by The National Film Board of Canada. Elle Flanders’ documentary Zero Degrees of Separation was screened in the Forum section of the Berlin Festival in 2005.
The Tiny Ventriloquist by Steve Reinke, (with contribution from James Richards). The installation will be presented at the McLuhan Salon of the Canadian Embassy
In Berlinale Shorts Competition, The Man That Got Away by Trevor Anderson is his second film in this section (2009 The Island). His doc short The High Leve Bridge was in Sundance in 2010.
All we have to do now is wait to see which prizes go to them! Last year Canadian productions came away with three.
