The Idol.
There's a good chance you've heard that term over the last several months as HBO fired up the promotional train on its latest drama series.
Even before that, there were reports of unrest on the set of the series, which hails from Euphoria creator Sam Levison.
Leading into the premiere, the premium cabler decided against providing advanced screeners to critics, sometimes considered a lack of faith in a project.
Anyway. The Idol Season 1 Episode 1 launched at Cannes, and the reaction was less than favorable.
Still, even bad press can lead to people watching a show. It's happened countless times, but how did the series premiere fare?
HBO has revealed 913,000 viewers watched the show on Sunday across Max and linear HBO telecasts.
The numbers are behind Euphoria Season 1 Episode 1, which did 1.1 million viewers in 2019.
The premiere numbers are on par with the debut of The White Lotus, which kicked off with 913,000 viewers.

HBO’s The Idol, which was co-created by Euphoria’s Sam Levinson, had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, with the famed fest screening the first two episodes. And while it did receive a five-minute standing ovation, that reception is far from unanimous.
Lots of strong reactions to #TheIdol out of #Cannes2023 — ranging from “I hated it” to “the TV version of clickbait” to “I don’t need to see any more of Lily-Rose Depp naked.”

Yeah, The Idol has the Euphoria vibes you might expect but it’s really more like somebody put Black Swan, Succession, and Secretary in a blender and let it rip. Prepare yourself for quite the discourse… #cannes

Though Euphoria features a large ensemble cast, it’s nearly impossible to imagine the show without Alexa Demie. The actor’s portrayal of Maddy Perez has made her a household name and inspired a number of memes, and fashion looks. Demie has been candid about the fact that she absolutely loves being such an integral part of the Euphoria cast. In fact, the show actually stopped her from quitting acting.
