When Andre Agassi was rising the ranks as a professional tennis player — en route to becoming one of the greatest American men to ever hit the circuit — he often felt forced to defend his hometown of Las Vegas.
“I was born and raised here,” Agassi said last Saturday during a press conference to promote The Netflix Slam featuring superstars Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz. “When I turned pro in 1,972 years ago, there was about 300,000 people that lived in this town. I would travel the world representing Vegas, having to answer some very basic questions such as, ‘What’s it like to live in a hotel?’ It was like, wait a second, Vegas is more than just a strip [of hotels]. To watch it evolve to a point where now we’re seeing not just sports come here, but we’re seeing the greatest environments for sports to participate in the Super Bowl and Formula 1 now here.

Netflix stuck the landing on a star-studded exhibition match between tennis superstars Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz this weekend. Stakes were high on the court, but the Las Vegas showdown was most effective as a lush advertisement for the streamer as a fledgling live sports destination.
Taking over the Mandalay Bay’s Michelob Ultra Arena, the inaugural Netflix Slam pit legend Nadal against 20-year-old Alcaraz. Rafa, as Nadal is affectionately known to millions of global fans, had not played since a hip injury flared up in 2023. Nadal has only faced Alcaraz a handful of times in his career and wound up losing to the prodigy in a nail-biting tie break.
No one really lost, though. Least of all Netflix. Branding was so pervasive in the hotel and casino that pedestrians lined up 100 deep to take photos in front of a “Netflix Slam” sign, installed on a massive wall of tennis balls.

“Ok, I can die now.”
So said a woman seated behind The Hollywood Reporter inside Mandalay Bay’s Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, host of the inaugural The Netflix Slam. She had just snapped a selfie that captured superstars Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz warming up on center court over her shoulder. Sure, it was a dramatic statement but it wasn’t obscene for such an occasion. There’s no shortage of gasp-worthy moments in Sin City, and there’s no doubt many of the 9,489 seated guests could relate to the sentiment.
The Sunday afternoon showdown, the latest in Netflix’s push for live streaming events, pitted two superstar Spaniards in an exhibition match that could be one of the final few times they meet across a net. Coco Gauff's coach, Brad Gilbert has given one principal reason for the teenager's historic US Open triumph.
Gauff has recently admitted that she felt she needed to win a Grand Slam as a teenager. Last year's US Open represented one of the final opportunities for the American to achieve that dream.
Veteran coach Gilbert joined Gauff's team in August 2023. He has previously worked with big names such as Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, Andy Murray and Kei Nishikori. Agassi won 6 of his Grand Slams under Gilbert's guidance.
Gilbert received much praise for his role in Gauff's triumph at Flushing Meadows. Although all the other current and previous members of Gauff's team also deserve a lot of credit for their roles in her development to that point, Gilbert did seem to help the teenager's mentality.
Now, Gilbert has spoken about his work with the US Open champion. As well as confirming...

John McEnroe is part of BBC's Wimbledon coverage every year, and his earnings for his work have been made public.
The BBC has broadcast Wimbledon on UK television screens for more than 80 years. That brings an expectation and pressure to have some of the biggest names in the studio and commentary box.
McEnroe, who created headlines a few weeks ago for an argument he had with Travis Scott, certainly fits that category. He won seven Grand Slam titles, and his often fiery on-court outbursts brought much attention to tennis.
The 64-year-old also uses a distinctive style when he is in the commentary box. He combines forthright and honest appraisals of the matches he is watching with a more easygoing and self-deprecating sense of humor compared to his playing career.
McEnroe's comments during Grand Slam matches often divide fans and generate attention on social media. And it is now clear...

Novak Djokovic was recently crowned the 2023 Men's Champion of Champions by French publication L'Equipe.
The renowned daily sports newspaper presents four awards each year: the best female and male international sports athletes and the best French and male French sports athletes.
This special podium has been dominated by men's tennis players in the past, with the likes of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal winning it on multiple occasions. Former World No. 1 Andre Agassi became the first tennis player to win it back in 1999.
Djokovic, one of the world's greatest tennis players, has scooped the award for the best male international sports athlete for a second time thanks to a superb 2023 season in which he won seven singles titles and scored a season-high of 17 Top 10 wins.

Andy Roddick jokingly accused Andre Agassi of cheating on him after picking his wife, Steffi Graf, up for the second edition of the Pickleball Slam next year.

In the ever-evolving world of tennis, rackets have played a crucial role in the sport's development, but five can be called "the most iconic."
Over the last two decades, several racket models have been introduced, with many getting a lot of popularity and recognition, influencing styles of play. However, only a few remained popular throughout the years, and we'll take a look at five of the most iconic tennis rackets of the 2000s.
5. Prince O3 White
One the most striking racket technologies of the last 20 years, O3 was developed by Prince to provide greater power and stability to the player, by incorporating large ports into the racket frame to increase string movement.
The result was a series of powerful, forgiving rackets with lively feel, and the most iconic of the series was perhaps the O3 white endorsed by Maria Sharapova. Interestingly, former world number four James Blake worked with Prince to develop O3 rackets,...

Coco Gauff showed the tennis world her true potential in 2023, but she's yet to dominate the game as many expect her to.
When the young American showed her potential to everyone at Wimbledon four years ago as a 15-year-old, huge predictions started to appear, and many went as far as comparing her to Serena Williams.
So far, she's yet to come close to those heights, but it can still be possible, mainly because Gauff already tasted major success in 2023, and with the next season ahead of us, she can go even a step further.
First of all, it's important to avoid having big expectations from Gauff. She's still only 19, and even if 2024 wouldn't be her major breakthrough year, there are still many seasons on the Wta Tour left in her career.
But already in 2023, she showed that she's ready for stardom, and in 2024, she can rise to it, and she...

John McEnroe appears to have ignited the mind games with Andre Agassi ahead of the second edition of the Pickleball Slam that will see the two tennis greats lock horns.
McEnroe and Agassi account for a combined 15 Grand Slams in singles and have each been ranked at No. 1 during their glittering playing careers. They met four times on the Atp Tour, with the head-to-head tied at 2-2. However, their careers didn't quite intertwine.
Just as Agassi rose through the ranks, McEnroe was in the twilight of his career. But their short-lived rivalry will be rekindled in a lucrative one-off pickleball match set to take place on February 4, 2024, at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.
The energetic McEnroe will team up with former Wta No. 1 Maria Sharapova, while Agassi will join forces with his wife and one of the most decorated champions in tennis history, Steffi Graf.

After a 21-year absence, the Hong Kong Open will return to Victoria Park Tennis Centre to herald the start of the 2024 men's tennis season.
Running from January 1st to 7th, this tournament will be an essential destination for the Atp players looking to finetune their games in the buildup to the season's first Grand Slam at the Australian Open.
The Hong Kong Open was a prominent event in the 90s with a gaudy list of former champions. Whoever wins the 2024 edition is primed to etch his name among some of the game's greats on the honor roll.

Rick Macci, the celebrated American coach who has worked with some of the sport's most iconic names, has made a bold claim regarding Carlos Alcaraz's tennis abilities.
Alcaraz has shot to prominence as tennis' newest superstar after winning two Grand Slams, four Masters 1000 titles, and touching the World No. 1 ranking while still being only 20. Recently, the Spaniard broke the Top 20 all-time list in career earnings, having amassed over $20 million.
Macci, who has previously coached at least five former No. 1s, including 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, highlighted Alcaraz's unpredictability on a tennis court as something we have never seen before, and opined that his drop shot is from "outer space."
The 68-year-old was speaking on an episode of Match Point Canada podcast where he drew parallels from some of the sport's greats and stated that Alcaraz is an amalgam of Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Andre Agassi all infused in one.

For as long as Novak Djokovic continues to play tennis, he is not leaving any stone unturned, as he is now the joint record holder for the most Atp hard court titles in the Open Era.
Djokovic won the 71st hard court title of his career at the Atp Finals in Turin last Sunday, beating home favorite Jannik Sinner in a rematch from their group-stage encounter. Djokovic avenged the loss in resounding fashion, winning 6-3, 6-3.
The 36-year-old tied retired Swiss legend Roger Federer at the top of this distinction, who won the last of his 71st hard court title in his home city of Basel in 2019. The two stars are well clear of the next men on the list. Those are Andre Agassi (46), Jimmy Connors (43), and Pete Sampras (35).

Any time you do something Roger Federer did in the past, it is a significant achievement because the Swiss Ace generally did legendary things.
Losing the last ever set played at Wimbledon 0-6 is probably not one of them, but there are plenty of other legendary things he did in his career. One of those happened about 20 years ago at the Atp Finals.
He won that event by beating Andre Agassi, but just getting to the final was huge. He was 22 at that time, so he was younger than 23, and since then, no player younger than 23 has ever made the Atp Finals without losing a match.
Well, until this Saturday when Jannik Sinner outlasted Daniil Medvedev in a pretty crazy match that went to three sets. By winning that match, Sinner equaled something Roger Federer did 20 years ago, and it's quite legendary.

Andre Agassi was thankful that his tennis career had helped shape him into the person he is today, but he jokingly also mentioned it provided him a platform to "take money away" from John McEnroe.
Through tennis Agassi has endeared himself to many people both on and off the court through his charming personality and outgoing character. He also met his wife, the legendary Wta player Steffi Graf, whom he tied the knot with over two decades ago.
Andre Agassi is considered among the greatest tennis players in history, winning eight Grand Slams and an Olympic gold medal during a glittering 20-year playing career. Speaking on the Pat MacAfee Show, the American reflected on his retirement with pride and dignity.
But he quickly changed the tune when he cracked the joke that because of his tennis career, he's now become a pickleball enthusiast and is now looking to "take money away" from John McEnroe.

Novak Djokovic bettered a few Roger Federer records over the years, and he's looking to do that for an Atp Finals one as well.
Roger Federer was a really amazing player in his day, but his longevity is not spoken about enough. In 2019, the Swiss ace was on the verge of beating Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final at age 38, which is amazing.
The way he was able to remain a basically dominant tennis player until a bad knee injury even when he was up there in age, is not seen often. Djokovic is certainly making a great impression of that as he's still arguably the most dominant player on the Atp Tour despite being up there in age, too.
He might even eclipse now-retired Federer by playing well into his 40s. We'll see, but if he does, then he might overtake the Swiss Ace for an interesting record.

Of all the records that Novak Djokovic has chalked down, his next one will most certainly stand out for many years to come.
Djokovic begins a 398th week atop the men's rankings (the most of any singles player on either tour) and is also guaranteed to make it 399th next week when he heads to Turin to defend his crown at the Atp Finals.
No player in singles has attained the 400-week mark. The Serbian will need just one round-robin match win to cement his spot as the Atp's World No. 1 for a jaw-dropping 400th week after the Atp Finals.
It will be mathematically impossible for Carlos Alcaraz to stop him should that scenario materialize. With a gap of 2,990 points in the live rankings, Djokovic might not even need to win a match at the Atp Finals should Alcaraz lose one of his round-robin matches.
Either way, this year's race...

With her new memoir My Name Is Barbra, Barbra Streisand says she hopes readers will finally “know the truth” about her.
“One of the reasons I wrote the book is to talk about the myths about me,” Streisand tells CBS News’ Gayle King in an interview that aired on CBS Sunday Morning.
Among reflections on her career as a singer, actress and director, Streisand writes about her “past loves and regrets,” as King teased.
But if it was up to Streisand, married to James Brolin for 25 years, there would have been less about her past relationships — including with Don Johnson, Ryan O’Neal, Andre Agassi and former Canadian prime minister Pierre Trudeau — in the book.
“Listen, I didn’t want to write about any of them,” Streisand says. “[But] my editor said, ‘You have to leave some blood on the page!'”

Former US Open champion Dominic Thiem became the 12th Atp player in history to attain and cross the $30 million mark in career prize money.
Thiem is one of eight active players who have hit that mark. He has earned $720,322 in yearly prize money this season so far. The Austrian star is not far off from cracking the Top 10 in that list, sitting just behind tennis great Andre Agassi (11th) and injured Croatian star Marin Cilic (10th). His career earnings add up to $30,003,212.
Thiem turned professional in 2011, peaking at No. 2 in the junior rankings. On the pro tour, he was ranked as high as World No. 3. He reached three Grand Slam finals during his heydays, famously winning the 2020 US Open, after storming back from two sets to love down in the final.

American tennis has been very good historically, and it's trending to be that way once more in the coming years.
It seems that American tennis has been on the rise for a few years now. While more experienced players like Taylor Fritz , Frances Tiafoe , and Tommy Paul stabilized as very good tennis players, some new talents like Sebastian Korda and Ben Shelton emerged in recent years.
It's a great time for US tennis, with plenty of new youngsters coming through the ranks as well, but for the first time in 26 years, there are four American men ranked in the Top 15 of Atp Rankings.
The last time that happened was in 1997 when Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Michael Chang, and Todd Martin were those men ranked in the top 15.
With Ben Shelton's tremendous Japan Open run , which allowed him to break into the Top 15, US tennis now has four players ranked in...

Carlos Alcaraz is on the verge of breaking the Top 20 in the all-time list of highest prize money earners, and he'll be a clear-cut favorite to eclipse most of the sport's greatest players by next year.
Recently, we expounded on how Alcaraz's constant pursuit for greatness and increased player prize money in tennis tournaments year-on-year puts the 20-year-old on the flight path to become the highest prize money in tennis history .
Alcaraz only made his Atp debut at 16 in 2020, just under four years ago, but he's accumulated career prize money in the region of $21 million. Following his surprise exit in the round of 16 at the Shanghai Masters, the World No. 2 moved into 21st position in the all-time list of prize money earners.
In late August, the Murcia native became the first player born in the 2000s to cross the $20 million mark in career prize money. In his short and storied tennis career,...

It looked like a typical U2 outdoor concert: Two helicopters zoomed through the starlit sky before producing spotlights over a Las Vegas desert and frontman Bono, who kneeled to the ground while singing the band’s 2004 hit “Vertigo”.
This scene may seem customary, but the visuals were created by floor-to-ceiling graphics inside the immersive Sphere. It was one of the several impressive moments during U2’s “Uv Achtung Baby” residency launch show at the high-tech, globe-shaped venue, which opened for the first time Friday night.
The legendary rock band, which has won 22 Grammys, performed for two hours inside the massive, state-of-the-art spherical venue with crystal-clear audio. Throughout the night, there were a plethora of attractive visuals — including kaleidoscope images, a burning flag and Las Vegas’ skyline, taking the more than 18,000 attendees on U2’s epic musical journey.

Retired tennis stars and former top-ranked players Maria Sharapova and John McEnroe will team up to face Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf in the second edition of the Pickleball Slam.

McEnroe and Agassi featured in the inaugural Pickleball Slam which was heralded as a massive success. Both of the two icons will return for the second edition. McEnroe will team up with Sharapova while Agassi will join forces with her wife Steffi Graf.

Tennis doping has once again entered professional and public discussion following a week of controversy surrounding Wta player Simona Halep .
After 12 months of provisional suspension, Halep was given a four-year ban from tennis for anti-doping charges. The Romanian tested positive for the banned substance, roxadustat at the 2022 US Open.
Halep's ban was enforced by the International International Tennis Integrity Agency (Itia). This is an independent organisation that oversees all cases of tennis doping cases in an attempt to ensure equality and integrity within professional tennis.
Since Halep received her extensive ban, which could signal the end of her career, players, and pundits have been divided on the sanction. Some have argued that the 31-year-old's tennis doping breaches warrant severe punishment and others believe the ruling is unfair.
Yet, Halep's case is just the latest in a long line of tennis doping scandals that have gripped the sport in recent decades.

Coco Gauff plans to work on her forehand in the off-season, but coach Brad Gilbert doesn't see any reason for it.
Brad Gilbert has a long history in tennis, having worked with some amazing tennis players in his career. He coached Andre Agassi and worked with Andy Murray as well. Coco Gauff recently hired the American to provide advice to her and her relatively young coach, Pere Riba.
All of them clicked pretty quickly and have been on the same page in the past several weeks, which resulted in three trophies for the teenager, including the US Open . Before that, there were some questions about her game, especially around the forehand, which she planned to work on .
Gilbert thought it's sure that it was really needed after observing her play for the past few weeks. You can't just fix a forehand overnight which is part of the reason why he's...

Novak Djokovic broke yet another record when chasing his 24th Grand Slam title at the 2023 US Open .
Few eras in tennis have witnessed such domineering champions as we have in the 21st century. With Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal perpetually making headlines, Novak Djokovic has often played the role of a persistent challenger.
But in recent years, Djokovic has taken a step beyond the esteemed company of Nadal and Federer, stepping into the tennis pantheon. And at the 2023 US Open, thanks to his win over Taylor Fritz , he broke yet another record.
By the end of this hard-fought match, Djokovic's tally of Grand Slam semifinals reached an unparalleled 47. This accomplishment edged him past Federer’s 46, creating a discernible gap between him and Rafael Nadal's 38.
This recent accolade does more than add another feather to Djokovic's cap; it reiterates his sustained dominance in the world of tennis. Looking at the list of elite tennis players,...

The 2023 US Open has been quite good for the native players, as plenty of them booked a spot in the second week.
American tennis is historically great as the country has had many great players over the sport's long history. It feels strange not to have at least one great US player, and with all due respect to John Isner, who is retired as of a few days ago , the country hasn't had that great player recently.
It's been a while, though there are a few of them who look promising. Taylor Fritz was the first one to make a Top 10 debut and actually played at the Atp Finals last year. There is only a Grand Slam missing to cement him as one of today's better players.
He's trying to do that at this year's US Open though it will take him beating Djokovic to remain in contention and that's a bit problematic.

Carlos Alcaraz returned to the event that was so important in his young career on the Atp Tour, and he returned in style.
It's now clear that Alcaraz won't be world no. 1 after the US Open , but he may still do quite a few things at the tournament. Former Atp No. 1 Mats Wilander gave a fascinating insight into the influence that celebrated American coach Brad Gilbert has had on Coco Gauff 's explosive form during the US swing.
After losing her first-round match at this year's Wimbledon , Gauff was under massive pressure to ditch her parents' advice in favor of outside counsel as part of her coaching team. At the start of the US swing, that certainly to be the case, where Gauff called on the services of Gilbert , who has previously coached some of tennis' iconic names.
In addition to her full-time coach Pere Riba, whom Gauff appointed earlier in June to replace Diego Moyano, Gilbert was sought after by the 19-year-old on a trial basis, and the impact has been instantaneous. Gauff won the two biggest titles of her career this month, including a Wta 1000 in Cincinnati .
The young American won 11 of her 12 matches across three...

John Isner will play his last professional tournament on the Atp Tour at Flushing Meadows, competing at the 2023 US Open .
Some stories start, others come to an end, and while the story of a possible Hall of Famer, Carlos Alcaraz, is just starting , the career of one of the most successful Americans of the past generation is ending.
The United States of America has been used to having successful tennis players for a very long time. From Jimmy Connors to John McEnroe, to Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi, there were many legendary tennis players born in the States.
In 2003, Andy Roddick was the last male American to win a Grand Slam title, and now it's twenty years since that happened. And while there was no one to replace the many successful generations in terms of winning majors, there was one player that certainly held the flag really high.

Carlos Alcaraz 's list of major achievements in tennis has grown rapidly over the past year, but the world number one's physical growth also caught the eye of former coach Brad Gilbert.
Alcaraz was back in action at the 2023 Cincinnati Masters recently, and he almost went all the way at the Atp 1000 event. The Spanish player raced to the final before losing a hard-fought encounter against world number two Novak Djokovic , who edged Alcaraz across three sets.
It was another big match for the 20-year-old who continues to showcase his elite-level talent on the biggest stages in tennis. After shooting the Taylor Swift documentary Miss Americana, deconstructing another pop icon in Brooke Shields was an organic segue for filmmaker Lana Wilson. The director is up for a Primetime Emmy nomination in Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Nonfiction Program for the Hulu/ABC News docuseries Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields.
Wilson’s agent first brought the opportunity of a Brooke Shields doc to her attention after the concept was in the works via Alexandra Wentworth and George Stephanopoulos, who have a production deal at ABC News. Wilson tells us why the time was finally prime for Shields to tell all.
Shields proved a documentarian’s dream subject, not holding back from her roller-coaster ride high of being a 1980s starlet in such dicey movies such as Pretty Baby, The Blue Lagoon and Endless Love to tabloid headlines as Andre Agassi’s wife and Michael Jackson’s Grammys date. Wilson wanted...

Sebastian Korda is returning to one of his favorite tournaments on the calendar and talked about the immeasurable impact that eight-time champion Andre Agassi has had on his career.
Korda is making his third straight main draw appearance at the Citi Open this week as the eighth seed, opening up against Russia's Alexander Shevchenko on Tuesday evening. Returning to Washington always ranks higher on Korda's schedule grid.
That is not purely because it's on home soil, but it's a tournament that evokes plenty of wonderful memories from his childhood days. The Citi Open was among his pitstops as a junior traveling with his father who used to coach Radek Stepanek over a decade ago.
"Washington has to be one of my favorite stops definitely on tour, just kind of being here as a 12, 13, and 14-year-old kid with my dad and Radek Stepanek. Just to kind of experience everything was really cool.

Coco Gauff gave a nonchalant answer in response to a question regarding her overall mindset about changes and rebuilding her own game.
The young American phenom has struggled to impose herself on the Wta Tour, and criticism has been harshly amplified . First, Gauff's serve looked like the weaker part of her arsenal, but now her forehand looks like it needs significant changes.
Gauff is taking the necessary steps to address the longstanding drawbacks which are prevalent in her game. She has started working with celebrated tennis figure Brad Gilbert, the former coach of Andre Agassi, at this week's Citi Open in Washington.
Gilbert's work as Gauff said in her presser is to help her overcome the mental hurdles in pressure moments. Her forehand will need a massive overhaul during the off-season . For now, though, Gauff believes she is in the rebuilding phase in her career and her own game, both literally and figuratively,...

Coco Gauff was seen practicing under the watchful eye of Brad Gilbert in the lead-up to this week's Citi Open in Washington.
Gilbert, who currently plies his trade as a tennis analyst, has in the past worked with former Atp number ones such as Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, and Andy Murray. The 61-year-old Californian guided both Agassi (6) and Roddick (1) to Grand Slam title wins under his tutelage.
And now Gilbert appears to have answered Gauff's call about joining her coaching team during the North American hard-court swing, which begins in earnest at the Wta event in Washington on Monday. The general consensus is that Gauff's forehand needs massive refinement , and tennis fans backed the celebrated former player to improve it.
Gauff's partnership with Argentinean coach Diego Moyano ended in April due to personal reasons. Her father assumed the role of the primary coach until she hired former Spanish world number...

The endless revolving door of fantasies in Peacock‘s Based on a True Story leaves some viewers to wonder: Are some of the characters just fantasies simmering inside Ava and Nathan Bartelett’s (Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina) minds?
Alex Alomar Akpobome, who played Ryan, the rich young house hunter said creator Craig Rosenberg flirted with the notion of weaving imaginary characters into the series, similar to how The Shining leveraged ghosts from the past to blur the lines of reality in the story.
“So there’s that scene where Jack’s at the bar and he’s talking to this bartender, and it’s kind of imaginary,” Akpobome told Showbiz Cheat Sheet, referring to murderer/bartender “Lloyd” in The Shining.
“And it was one of the influences behind the character. Because there are scenes with only me and her,” he mused, referring to Cuoco’s character. “So technically he could not be real.
