Following up his documentary Pictures of Ghosts, Brazilian director Kleber Mendonça Filho has unveiled his first narrative feature since 2019’s Bacurau. He’ll next direct the political thriller The Secret Agent, set to star Brazilian icon Wagner Moura.
Variety reports the late 1970s-set film will follow Moura as Marcelo, “a university professor in his 40s who is on the run. He travels from São Paulo to the seaside city of Recife during Carnival week, hoping to reunite with his son. But he soon finds out he has been tailed and spied on by neighbors in his new refuge, leaving him no possible escape from the tentacles of corruption.” Maria Fernanda Candido (The Traitor) is also among the ensemble of the film, which is aiming for a 2025 premiere and will mark the director’s most ambitious work yet.

*Spoiler Alert: Contains spoilers for the movie Civil War*
Alex Garland’s Civil War is undeniably a challenging film to watch. Through its fictional lens, it effectively captures the looming horror that threatens both the nation and the world, offering a stark portrayal of a potential reality. With its intense scenes filled with blood, fog, flying bullets, and rockets, the movie is worthy of all attention.
Now interestingly, while it was indeed difficult to watch for the viewers, the cast and crew experienced even more harrowing moments portraying the characters and telling the story. Lead actress Kirsten Dunst, along with co-star Wagner Moura, beautifully portrays their roles, with the Narcos star revealing in an interview the most challenging aspect of the experience.

Spoiler Alert: This contains major spoilers for the ending of “Civil War,” now playing in theaters.
Call it the fog of war.
At the height of the blood-soaked third act of Alex Garland’s “Civil War,” audiences may be unsure who is on which side of the battle between two factions in an America torn asunder. The bullets and rockets are flying at such an unyielding clip amid the film’s deafening sound effects that theatergoers will likely struggle to keep score and instead become immersed in the real-life chaos of combat.
In the dystopian thriller set in a not-too-distant future, Kirsten Dunst stars as Lee, a world-weary photojournalist who has seen and shot it all, including “the motherfucking legendary photo of the Antifa massacre.” Heading into the film’s final 30 minutes, Lee has finally embedded with the Western Forces, an alliance of states led by California and Texas in...

We’re all still far off from knowing for sure what the most likely 2025 Oscar contenders are. But the ripple effect of the WGA and SAG strikes is a spring film season of buzzy, auteur-driven dramas. This is still true of “Dune: Part Two,” the film that has set the tone of this year’s awards conversation, though with six Oscars already under the Warner Bros. franchise’s belt, its chances at more Academy Awards nominations are all too predictable.
An Oscars wild card is “Civil War,” the latest A24 film from writer-director Alex Garland. While his most recent film with the company, “Men,” underperformed critically and commercially, his first collaboration with A24, “Ex Machina,” netted Garland his sole Oscar nomination, for Best Original Screenplay, and won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

Plot: In the United States, amid a brutal civil war, a team of journalists drive from New York to Washington D.C, where they’ve been promised an interview with the president.
Review: A24 is the only movie studio I know of that’s picked up a cult following of its own. Their brand has become one of the most trusted among discerning film fans, delivering a slew of interesting, provocative movies that fit all genres. In some ways, they are a throwback to an older kind of filmmaking in that they’ve never focused on chasing franchises and have always been filmmaker-focused. They’ve always taken risks, and it’s paid off more than it hasn’t. However, their latest film, Civil War, is arguably their riskiest movie, sporting their biggest budget (north of $50 million) and subject matter that could be seen as a bit of a political powder keg.

British writer-director Alex Garland has form when it comes to depicting the apocalypse, having previously written the 2002 zombie classic 28 Days Later. With his latest film, he turns his attention to the US, revealing a country torn apart by a cleverly unspecified Civil War, observing the ensuing horror through the pointedly objective eyes of a group of embedded war photographers. By turns thrilling, terrifying and deeply moving, it’s a profoundly provocative piece of work that demands to be seen.
After a brief prologue with the US President (Nick Offerman) psyching himself up for a press briefing, we learn that present-day America is deep in the throes of a catastrophic Civil War, after the states of California and Texas both seceded from the Union and joined forces, making...

Writer/director Alex Garland explored the near future in two of his previous three features. In Ex MacHina he pondered the possibilities of emerging technology and the rise of sentient artificial beings. Then in Annihilation, he tackled the results of alien contact and the impact on the ecology and the military response to it. With this new film, Garland goes “back to the future”, though it’s not centuries ahead, but rather a time that could be “just around the corner”, spawned from events happening right now. And it’s not gizmos or ETs that propel the cautionary fable. No, it’s the dangers of hatred and intolerance that divide the country and lead to a Civil War. It’s not the first time, but it could be the last…

Alex Garland belongs to a certain class of filmmakers that fascinates me because, regardless of the more positive or negative opinions about his films, all his narratives have an undeniable impact and are practically impossible not to debate. Personally, I believe that the worst type of movie is one that doesn’t provoke any kind of discussion… those that quickly fade into oblivion. A trait that doesn’t fit into the career of the mind behind Ex Machina, Annihilation, Men, and now, Civil War.

Alex Garland’s Civil War is a cautionary tale that’s frighteningly relevant and unsettling. It would be wonderful to live in a social and political climate in which the world shown in the film seems outlandish and impossible. But we don’t, and likely never will.
Garland’s brutal, in-your-face wake-up call is terrifying in both its visual depictions of combat and in its message. Civil War is also one of the best representations of the importance of journalism depicted in a fictional story.
The war is in its last weeks as the story picks up, with California and Texas’ Western Front alliance on the verge of entering Washington DC. As a Californian, this alliance was jarring when introduced in the film’s first trailers, given the states’ political leanings. However, Garland doesn’t address why...

Civil War, the buzzy A24 film that follows a team of journalists as they race to Washington, D.C., to document American citizens fighting each other across the country and rebel forces descending on the White House, throws in one surprise right off the bat: California and Texas, typically political opposites, are allies in the war.
At a special screening in Los Angeles on Tuesday, writer-director Alex Garland explained the “intentional” decision to unite the two, saying it was “partly to get around a kind of reflexive, polarizing position that people might fall into, that’s one thing, but actually that’s not the main thing. The main thing is to do with how the president is presented and what can be inferred from that.” The president, played by Nick Offerman, has disbanded the FBI, has used air strikes on American citizens and has established himself as a three-term leader.

In Civil War, the grisly, cautionary new film from A24 and Alex Garland, there’s a scene toward the end of the second act in which a machine gun-toting Jesse Plemons asks Wagner Moura, “What kind of American are you?” When Moura was filming in Atlanta two years ago, the stomach-turning threat inherent in the line awoke a latent nightmare in the actor. “I’m an American citizen, but I speak with an accent and I’m not from here,” says Moura. “It made me start thinking about, ‘What if I’m driving somewhere deep in the U.S. and I stop at a gas station and someone asks me where I’m from or what I’m doing there? How would I react?’”

Alex Garland’s latest film Civil War, from A24 and featuring a star-studded cast including Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Jesse Plemons and Nick Offerman, aims to hold a mirror up to a society spiraling out amongst civil war. In a time when flipping through the news or scrolling through social media can feel like peering into dystopia, Garland wants to crystallize these anxieties into a narrative form, offering a prophetic vision of America’s future. However, despite its ambitious premise and high-caliber cast, the movie stands as a muddled reflection, ultimately rendering its cautionary tale less impactful than intended.

In Alex Garland’s “Civil War,” the Western forces of Texas and California hardly remember what they’re fighting for.
At least, Garland doesn’t say outright what they’re fighting for. The film, which had its world premiere at SXSW on Thursday, depicts a near-future U.S. at the climax of a civil war where the two most populous states have seceded. Rather than explaining the politics that landed the country in such chaos, “Civil War” focuses on a group of journalists who document all avenues of the conflict.
“The film is intended to be a conversation, so it doesn’t assert too much,” the British director said in a post-screening Q&a. “But I also believe that everybody understands internally why. This is also true of my country and many, many other countries that are dealing with the effects of polarization and populism: We don’t need it explained.

Playing a long-married couple in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Parker Posey and Wagner Moura are twinned forces of nature. They’re weird, they’re obnoxious, they’re so cheerful they’re borderline terrifying, and so obviously wild about each other they’re almost endearing. Whenever they’re onscreen, the entire show seems to sit up and hold its breath, eagerly aware that anything might happen in their presence.
Alas, they’re also guest stars. The couple actually at the center of the Prime Video comedy are the rather more sedate John (Donald Glover) and Jane (Maya Erskine). Mr. & Mrs. Smith has its delights, with a plot that sends the duo on glamorous top-secret missions to one picturesque location after another. But it’s all built on the wobbly foundation of a romance that’s more interesting in theory than in practice.

Alex Garland, the director of Ex Machina, Annihilation, Men, and Devs, is back with what could be his most intense film to date. Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Cailee Spaeny, Nick Offerman, Karl Glusman, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonica T. Gibbs, Jess Matney, and Jesse Plemons star as primary cast members in Garland’s latest epic, Civil War, about a nation divided and collapsing in on itself. Today, A24 debuted a Civil War trailer that hits a little too close to home when the United States feels about reaching its boiling point.
In today’s Civil War trailer, 19 states have seceded from the United States, with factions forming in the West and Florida. Meanwhile, the President says the conflict will be dealt with swiftly, but are things already impossible to control? While some choose to engage with the catastrophe head-on, others prefer to pretend like it’s not happening right outside their door.

Budapest, Aug 19 (Ians) Tokyo Olympic triple jump silver medalist Zhu Yaming hoped to achieve his season best at the upcoming World Athletics Championships, here.
Zhu and his teammates took a training session in the National Athletics Center on Friday, one day before the 2023 athletics worlds begin, reports Xinhua.
Zhu told Xinhua everything has been going well so far, and he hoped to qualify for the final through his first attempt on Saturday and save the best for the last.
“I can feel the pressure because the World Championships are such an important event for everyone. I tried to calm down. You can probably jump well yesterday, but nobody knows what will happen tomorrow,” said the 29-year-old.
Like many other Chinese athletes, Zhu said the newly built stadium makes athletes feel excited and comfortable.
“This is a great venue. The track is close to the audience and it’s easy to enjoy the atmosphere.

Exclusive: Wagner Moura is set to star in the upcoming biopic Angicos about Brazilian educator and author Paulo Freire. Felipe Hirsch will write and direct and Adriana Tavares of Café Royal will produce alongside Paula Linhares of Cenya Productions and Marcos Tellechea and Guilherme Somlo of Reagent Media.
Angicos begins in the town of the same name in Rio Grande do Norte in 1963, with the mission of educator Freire (Moura) to fight against illiteracy by teaching the entire village of blue-collar, domestic, and cotton farm workers how to read and write in only 40 hours – a seemingly impossible feat.
Funded by President John F. Kennedy to solidify the South American nation as an ally in the Cold War amidst worldwide social and economic tensions, the success of the endeavor resulted in the planned implementation of Freire’s literary system on a nationwide level. However, before long,...

After years of portraying Nacho Vargas in AMC's "Better Call Saul," Michael Mando was set to star in another prestige crime drama about handling drugs. "Sinking Spring" is an exciting new project being helmed by the legendary Ridley Scott, that boasts plenty of talented folks both in front of and behind the camera. Unfortunately, Mando will no longer be involved, as the actor was recently dismissed from the show after clashing with an unidentified co-star, per The Hollywood Reporter. A replacement for Mando has already been found in Wagner Moura, of "Narcos" fame.
Production on "Sinking Spring" began earlier this month in Philidelphia. Better Call Saul alum Michael Mando won’t be making a return to the small screen in the Apple TV+ crime drama Sinking Spring: The actor has been fired from the series following a reported incident on set. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mando had a clash with a costar on the show, and though producers tried to “smooth things out,” the actor was ultimately let go from the project. Now Narcos actor Wagner Moura will fill the role, costarring with Bryan Tyree Henry (Atlanta), who’s also an executive producer on the series. The job marks a return to Apple TV+ for Moura, who appeared in Shining Girls on the streaming service last year. Based on the book Dope Thief by Dennis Tafoya, Sinking Spring “follows long-time Philly friends and delinquents who pose as DEA agents to rob an unknown house in the countryside,” according to the show’s logline.

Wagner Moura (Narcos) is set to star opposite Brian Tyree Henry in Apple TV+’s crime drama series Sinking Spring, from Top Gun: Maverick writer Peter Craig, in a recasting. Better Call Saul alum Michael Mando was originally tapped for the role but has been let go after an on-set physical altercation with another cast member. The recasting is being done during filming on the series, directed and executive produced by Ridley Scott via his Scott Free Productions.

Michael Mando has been let go from the Apple TV series Sinking Spring.
Sources say the Better Call Saul alum, who was set to star in the eight-episode series from Ridley Scott, was dismissed from the show following a clash with a co-star. Mando’s role has been recast, with Narcos alum Wagner Moura set to take on the part. Moura will reteam with Apple after previously appearing in Shining Girls for the streamer.
Sources said Mando, who played Nacho on all six seasons of AMC’s Better Call Saul, was let go after an on-set incident. Producers attempted to smooth things out, and the decision was made to let Mando go from the series and recast the role.
Reps for Apple declined comment.
Picked up to series in August, the series is based on Dennis Tafoya’s book Dope Thief and is being written by Top Gun: Maverick scribe Peter Craig.

London, Dec 25 (Ians) Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte is not happy to be playing so quickly after the FIFA World Cup 2022 and has hinted he will select those who have remained in England, for his side’s Boxing Day match at Brentford.
The Premier League resumes on Monday, just eight days after the World Cup final between France and Argentina in Qatar.
While Conte has already indicated that World Cup finalists Cristian Romero and Hugo Lloris will not play against the Bees, the Italian has a decision to make over Croatia’s Ivan Perisic as well as England pair Harry Kane and Eric Dier after the trio all made the last eight.
“It is a strange situation and honestly to play so quickly — only one week after the World Cup — I am not really happy. On one hand, you are happy because for my club, Tottenham, to have 12 players at...

Wagner Moura burrowed deep into the character of Dan Velazquez in “Shining Girls,” the new Apple TV+ drama series based on the novel of the same name. Dan is a journalist at the Chicago Sun-Times who assists his coworker Kirby as she tries to get to the bottom of how the person who attacked her may have actually been a time-traveling serial killer. But as the actor notes, Dan is not solely defined by his connection to Kirby. The series also digs into his strained relationship with his son and his struggles with alcohol. “Dan is obviously a very troubled guy,” says Moura in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby. “I was very excited to dig in myself, all those issues and troubles that character had, being a reckless father.” Watch the full video chat above.
