Tull Stories will release Daniel Gordon’s documentary feature Strike: An Uncivil War in the UK and Ireland.
The doc tells the story of the year-long miners’ strike of 1984/85 – considered one of the UK’s most violent and divisive industrial disputes. The film pays particular focus to the bloody Battle of Orgreave, which took place on June 18, 1984. The media subsequently appeared to lay blame for the violence at the feet of the strikers, with Gordon’s feature aiming to overturn this.
The film also explores Conservative prime minister Margaret Thatcher’s unrelenting mission to break the role of unions in British working class society.

International buyers are swooning over The Glory of Life, a very un-Kafkaesque love story about Franz Kafka and his last romance.
The German-language drama, from directors Judith Kaufmann and Georg Maas, follows the romance between Franz Kafka (Sabin Tambrea) and Dora Diamant (Henriette Confurius) in the final year of the famed writer’s life, before his death from tuberculosis at age 40.
Unlike most adaptations of Kafka’s work — from Orson Welles’ The Trial (1962) to Steven Soderbergh’s Kafka (1991) to The Castle (1997) from Michael Haneke — angst and existential dread are mostly absent from The Glory of Life. Based on the best-selling novel by Michael Kumpfmüller, the film focuses instead on what the directors’ claim was the happiest period in Kafka’s life.

One of the main reasons why Kaiju No. 8 has become so increasingly popular in such a short period of time is its protagonist, Kafka Hibino. Kafka Hibino might be the only 32-year-old main character in the entire Shonen genre, and his age has only worked in his favor, as many fans are able to connect with him on a realistic level.
Kaiju No. 8 | Production I.G.
However, his age was more than just a plot device; it was something Naoya Matsumoto incorporated from his own personal life. In an interview, the creator of Kaiju No. 8 revealed that he based Kafka on himself, as he knew the struggles of adulthood and wanted to incorporate these struggles within his main character.
Initially portrayed as a disadvantage, Kafka’s age plays a huge role in the story as it adds realism to the story and explains that the shining moment...

(Welcome to Ani-time Ani-where, a regular column dedicated to helping the uninitiated understand and appreciate the world of anime.)
A big problem with recommending anime is that, from the outside in, they can all seem rather similar. The biggest animes ever tend to all be battle shonen shows from a single manga magazine — just look at Michael B. Jordan's list of favorite anime — much like how superhero movies dominate Hollywood. Of course, there is more to the medium than that, as this column often shows, from the thought-provoking and bleak sci-fi mystery "Pluto," to the Coen brothers-like oddities of "OddTaxi." Still, when it comes to mainstream action shows, they all tend to follow teens, like Deku, Goku, Yuji, Tanjiro, and Eren.

It could be said that shonen anime is typified by its heroes. Whether it’s Yuji Itadori from Jujutsu Kaisen ; Jotaro Kujo from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure ; or the icon himself, Goku of Dragon Ball fame, their exploits have become indelibly linked to the medium. Not every hero is born great, but often we will at least meet them at a stage of their life when they have hidden potential. Take My Hero Academia ’s Izuku Midoriya, for example, whose enthusiasm and passion belies a frail body bereft of natural talent. Related: Recap: Kaiju No. 8 Episode 5, "Joining Up!" In April 2024, Naoya Matsumoto’s Kaiju No. 8 anime series hit the screens, and for the first time in years, fans believed that they might have found something unique. The series was quite different from a basic Shonen series as it did not follow the stereotypical anime tropes and introduced a new angle with the help of its protagonist, Kafka Hibino.
Kafka Hibino – Kaiju No. 8
Kafka defied every rule that is followed by a main character in a Shonen series, and this was a good thing as it made fans believe that Kaiju No. 8 might be on to something. However, as the story progressed, it went the same route as every other Shonen anime series, and Kafka’s unique traits went to waste.

When Kaiju No. 8 debuted in April 2024, fans had a lot of expectations from the series, as the series was already successful in the manga industry. Eventually, the anime series lived up to its expectations and became one of the best action anime series of the current year. However, Kaiju No. 8 brought with it a new twist, which is not often seen in the anime world.
Kafka – Kaiju No. 8
The twist was introduced through the protagonist of the series, Kafka Hibino. Kafka was a cleaner for Monster Sweeper Inc., but he always wanted to join the Defense Force to eradicate the Kaiju, or “monsters,” that have infested the world and are wreaking havoc. But later on, he himself becomes a Kaiju, and the story becomes more and more interesting.
The twist that Kafka brought with him was that he defied the physical stereotypes of the Shonen main character.

The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival has announced its first wave of program details for its upcoming 58th edition, which is set to take place from June 28 through July 6, 2024.
