It could be said that shonen anime is typified by its heroes. Whether it’s Yuji Itadori from Jujutsu Kaisen ; Jotaro Kujo from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure ; or the icon himself, Goku of Dragon Ball fame, their exploits have become indelibly linked to the medium. Not every hero is born great, but often we will at least meet them at a stage of their life when they have hidden potential. Take My Hero Academia ’s Izuku Midoriya, for example, whose enthusiasm and passion belies a frail body bereft of natural talent. Related: Recap: Kaiju No. 8 Episode 5, "Joining Up!" If you haven’t noticed, there’s a consistent theme here. All of the abovementioned protagonists are young, ambitious and have their whole lives ahead of them when their adventures begin in earnest. In April 2024, Naoya Matsumoto’s Kaiju No. 8 anime series hit the screens, and for the first time in years, fans believed that they might have found something unique. The series was quite different from a basic Shonen series as it did not follow the stereotypical anime tropes and introduced a new angle with the help of its protagonist, Kafka Hibino.
Kafka Hibino – Kaiju No. 8
Kafka defied every rule that is followed by a main character in a Shonen series, and this was a good thing as it made fans believe that Kaiju No. 8 might be on to something. However, as the story progressed, it went the same route as every other Shonen anime series, and Kafka’s unique traits went to waste.
When it became noticeable in the series, fans pointed it out and shared their opinions about the wasted potential of Kafka Hibino and how one of...

When Kaiju No. 8 debuted in April 2024, fans had a lot of expectations from the series, as the series was already successful in the manga industry. Eventually, the anime series lived up to its expectations and became one of the best action anime series of the current year. However, Kaiju No. 8 brought with it a new twist, which is not often seen in the anime world.
Kafka – Kaiju No. 8
The twist was introduced through the protagonist of the series, Kafka Hibino. Kafka was a cleaner for Monster Sweeper Inc., but he always wanted to join the Defense Force to eradicate the Kaiju, or “monsters,” that have infested the world and are wreaking havoc. But later on, he himself becomes a Kaiju, and the story becomes more and more interesting.
The twist that Kafka brought with him was that he defied the physical stereotypes of the Shonen main character.

Kaiju No. 8 is finally here for fans to watch after having waited for an extremely long time. Seeing how much care and dedication Naoya Matsumoto has put into the series, it is only fair that the anime should either do justice to the manga or surpass it beyond the fans’ expectations. There have been many shows, movies, and other anime that it has been compared to.

From Attack on Titan to Godzilla, the world of monsters isn’t unique yet it is not too common either. One of the biggest works it gets constantly compared with is Hajime Isayama’s magnum opus. Whether it is about Eren Jaeger’s story being eerily similar to Kafka’s or just the uncanny presence of monsters in general.

Next week marks Charles Burnett’s 80th birthday, which the filmmaker will celebrate tonight in long-gestating style: by premiering the restoration of his “The Annihilation of Fish” in Los Angeles. Burnett first premiered the film at the 1999 Toronto International Film Festival, and for 25 years he’s struggled to get it in front of audiences.
“I’m curious, because it’s been locked away for a very long time for all sort of reasons and you sort of wonder if it’s still relevant, how audiences are going to take it,” Burnett told IndieWire on the eve of his birthday and tonight’s screening.
Tonight’s free screening is part of the UCLA Festival of Preservation, a full circle moment for Burnett, who learned his craft at UCLA’s film school. Fifty years later, his alma mater helped restore a film that, at times, looked like it might be locked in a Technicolor vault forever.

Kaiju No. 8 stands out in one way many shonen works fail to. It is relatable in a way most coming-of-age stories wouldn’t be. At the same time, it keeps tropes from the genre in a flow that helped it gain its popularity even more. There is much support for the idea introduced, however, it is the protagonist who holds the aces.

Kaiju No. 8 is both the most anticipated anime of the season and one of the most worrisome at the same time. The series is about to make its premiere and although there is a lot of hype surrounding it, it also comes with backlash for one reason or another. Needless to say, Naoya Matsumoto’s work is the talk of the town, or rather the world.

The idea of humans transforming into monsters to address injustice isn’t new; manga like Attack on Titan and Parasyte have already included it. Still, Kaiju No.8 returns to the notion that if a human becomes a kaiju, it must be among the strongest and the greatest of two species.
While some may dismiss Kaiju No.8 as a mere imitation of Attack On Titan, it actually presents the narrative with a finesse that arguably surpasses its predecessor.
Echoing the legendary Godzilla series, Kaiju No.8 mirrors Attack On Titan in several ways, particularly in how its central characters, Kafka Hibino, and Eren Yeager, possess the remarkable ability to morph into the very creatures that threaten their worlds.
The Parralel of Kafka and Eren Yeager
Eren Yeager from Attack on Titan
Unlike Eren Yeager, who was praised for his mastery of omnidirectional mobility gear against Titans, Kafka is essentially at a disadvantage with his humanity.
