Ring Twice for Miranda
Stage II at New York City Center Through April 16, 2017
During Ring Twice for Miranda, while witnessing the frequent long and drawn-out arguments scenes that pepper this play’s landscape, I was reminded of Andy Warhol’s Chelsea Girls. What kept your attention during that film’s interminable arguments among Warhol’s characters was hope of some kind of satisfying resolution. Playwright Alan Hruska is by trade a litigation lawyer, so he knows how to argue. Unfortunately his characters do not share his real life expertise. I kept saying to myself “come on, get on with it!” My impatience had me physically squirming much as I did when, eons ago, I first viewed Chelsea Girls! In addition, specters of the post-apocalyptic Spike Milligan/Richard Lester film collaboration The Bed Sitting Room floated about me. Absent from Miranda’s world was the clear social satire and whimsy which sustained Mr.

Title: The Man on Her Mind Director: Bruce Guthrie and Alan Hruska Starring: Amy McAllister, Samuel James, Georgia Mackenzie and Shane Attwooll Engaging in relatively new experiences that have not yet been fully explored can be truly harrowing and terrifying situations for anyone, no matter how much they’re seeking a change in their lives. Exploring that uncharted territory is intriguingly presented in several circumstances in the new romantic comedy, ‘The Man on Her Mind.’ The project is one of the first major film roles for both lead actors, Amy McAllister and Samuel James, and also the feature film directorial debut of co-helmer, Bruce Guthrie. Despite the movie being their true [ Read More ]

The Man on Her Mind
Written by Alan Hruska
Directed by Alan Hruska & Bruce Guthrie
USA, 2014
It’s no fun to bash a no-budget passion project like The Man on Her Mind. Every frame practically oozes with the blood, sweat and tears of the filmmakers; every exterior shot almost certainly “stolen;” every interior shot almost certainly filmed at a generous friend’s house. You can smell the cigarette smoke and taste the wine as they celebrated another successful day of filming. It’s the spirit of independent filmmaking that keeps cinema rich and vibrant. And yet, failure is also a part of the creative process, and this film simply fails on too many levels to warrant your time.
It is an extremely tricky business adapting a stage play to film. At best, you can recapture some of the immediacy and energy of the original theatrical production. At worst, it can feel clunky and…...

In the world of "indie filmmaking," there are some pretty readily identifiable tiers. There is, of course, the Sony Pictures Classics level of indies - the kind of films with budgets reaching well into the millions, featuring recognizable stars and often boasting a theatrical art house run. Then there are the true indies, perhaps the "pure indies" - films made for virtually no money, and very little in the way of other resources, yet thrust into being by the enduring passion of their creators. Unfortunately, even when these films know their limits, the seams still end up very much showing. The Man on Her Mind is just such an effort. Filmmakers Alan Hruska (an experienced director) and Bruce Guthrie (not so much) were wise enough to contain...

Bruce Guthrie and Alan Hruska's The Man on Her Mind, adapted by Hruska from his 2012 British play, isn't stagy as much as stilted. The quartet of malcontents at its center are well-bred, riddled with tics and dripping with neuroses, quaint types who address siblings as "my dear," "darling," and "sister."
The comic conceit is that young loner Nellie (Amy McAllister), a commitment-phobic Big Apple publisher, rejects the flirtations of a persistent bohemian ghostwriter named Leonard (Samuel James), yet happily imagines she's dating a slicker, smugger, more casual version of him, whom she calls Jack (also played by James).
Meanwhile, Leonard, an aspiring author, invents a sweeter doppelgänger of Nellie (McAllister, again). His nosy, nagging neighbors — Ne...

[An indieWIRE review from Reverse Shot.] Any movie that takes shadowy, Ivy League-based secret societies as its subject is bound to pique a certain amount of curiosity. At best, one hopes for the mesmerizing creepiness of “Eyes Wide Shut”; at minimum, the camp, byzantine schlock of “The DaVinci Code.” Alan Hruska’s “Reunion” starts out with a promising premise: a get-together of a handful of veterans of a society apparently modeled on …...
