Endeavor must face a claim from a consultant who says its debut on the public market was salvaged thanks to his blueprint of the company’s business model. David Carde may have created an implied contract with Endeavor when his attorney emailed CEO Ari Emanuel his analysis that illustrated how its hodgepodge of unrelated acquisitions is actually good for business, according to a decision that came down Monday.
The suit revolves around Endeavor’s 10.3 billion IPO last year. Leading up to the public offering, there was prevalent analyst criticism of the company’s acquisition blitz, which included mixed martial arts organization UFC, art fair company Frieze and Professional Bull Riders. The “spending spree,” as Carde called it in his complaint, led to Endeavor losing 554 million in 2019 and racking up 4.5 billion in long-term debt.
Endeavor planned to hold its IPO in 2019 but pulled it amid skepticism from the market.

The story of how the new Showtime anthology series “Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber” came to be begins on Twitter, where co-creator and co-showrunner Brian Koppelman has curated a community of over 130,000 followers.
“Mike Isaac sent the manuscript to me on Twitter,” Koppelman told TheWrap during a Zoom interview earlier in February. “I got maybe 100 pages in and I said to [co-creator/co-showrunner David] Levien, ‘You’ve got to read this too.’”
Published in 2019, Isaac’s book “Super Pumped” serves as the basis for the first season of the new series and chronicles the rise and fall of Uber CEO Travis Kalanick, who ran the company until he was removed as CEO in 2017 following numerous accounts of cultivating a toxic workplace culture full of sexual harassment and brash business decisions.

Uber has made a remarkably speedy rise from a simple transportation company to a worldwide courier that delivers your food and freight, and rents out cycles and scooters. But it’s the corporate speed bumps and potholes the company dealt with that are the fuel for Showtime’s Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber. Season 1 of the anthology series, premiering February 27, stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Travis Kalanick, former CEO of the ride-hailing giant, alongside Kyle Chandler as Kalanick’s onetime ally Bill Gurley. As Showtime explains in a synopsis, this season of the series “pivots on Kalanick, Uber’s hard-charging CEO who was ultimately ousted in a boardroom coup, and his sometimes-tumultuous relationship with his mentor Bill Gurley, the plainspoken, brilliant Texan venture capitalist who bets his sterling reputation on Uber’s success — and then has to live with the consequences.” So what happened between Kalanick and Gurley? For starters,...

For fans of Showtime’s drama Billions, the upcoming Super Pumped: The Battle For Uber may familiar in more ways than one – from the story of a striving entrepreneur looking to shake up their industry, to some of the talent that appears throughout the second. During a TCA panel on Wednesday, executive producers Brian Koppelman, David Levien and Beth Schacter said that they also felt the similarities upon depicting the rise of Uber for Showtime.
“Our voice is our voice, and that’s not an intentional thing,” said Koppelman. “Everybody who does this for a while…[is] working from the place that they’re most connected to.”
Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Uma Thurman and Kyle Chandler, Showtime’s Super Pumped tells the story of the ride-sharing company that stands out as both a marvel and a cautionary tale, featuring internal and external battles that ripple with unpredictable consequences. The series is based...

“There are two sides to Travis Kalanick, and I wanted to play both of them,” says Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who stars as the Uber founder and CEO in Super Pumped, the tense, fast-moving new Showtime drama that charts the “bad boy of tech”‘s rise and fall. As the actor details, the series unflinchingly shows Kalanick’s unethical behavior, but in playing him he wanted to go deeper and ask, “What are his strengths? Why is he so successful?” He talked to many people who knew him and discovered that he had a magnetic, optimistic side that allowed him to rally the best people around him. That included brilliant board members. One was entrepreneur Arianna Huffington (Uma Thurman). The actress prepared by listening to Huffington on YouTube, Ted Talks, media shows, and other sources, “for hours and hours.” Another, venture capitalist Bill Gurley (Kyle Chandler) faced a constant, “uphill battle,” Chandler reveals.

“Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber” starts with a simple question: “Are you an asshole?” Then-ceo of Uber Travis Kalanick (played with apt exuberance by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) poses the question to a prospective hire, mid job interview. The young man is a bit thrown, but he’s given a temporary reprieve when two of Travis’ top staffers storm in with an emergency: There’s a growing perception that Uber doesn’t care about passenger safety. Drivers are making passengers uncomfortable. Some are breaking the law. Still, Travis doesn’t see why it’s a problem, and it’s certainly not his problem, but the point of the impromptu meeting isn’t to solve a problem. It’s to make more money.

Travis Kalanick, the former CEO of the ride-sharing company Uber, might seem like a tiresome subject for a seven-episode docudrama series: another move-fast-break-things tech bro whose “change the world” sloganeering barely disguises a seething insecurity. Yet these qualities are exactly what makes this such a plum role for Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the star of the new series “Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber.” That’s not meant as a dig at Gordon-Levitt, a talented actor with charisma and energy to spare. But his work as Kalanick does the neat trick of flipping a performer’s potential weaknesses — a sometime tendency to peacock, in his visible efforts to put on a show — into a character-defining strength. The show’s version of Kalanick, called “Tk” by his closest colleagues, is brash and cocksure; he’s also relentlessly self-conscious about his endless points of reference — “Zuck” (of Facebook), “Ek” (of Spotify), and any other...
