With Monday’s episode, Season 21 of The Voice went live, teeing up make-or-break performances by the Top 20 — though I expected a Top 21, to be honest. After last week’s reveal that viewers could vote for a coach-picked contestant to return to the competition — either Team Ariana Grande’s Vaughn Mugol, Team Blake Shelton’s Hailey Green, Team Kelly Clarkson’s Aaron Hines or Team John Legend’s Samara Brown — I thought extra space would be made for a comeback kid. Not yet, apparently. (Tuesday, during the Wild Card Instant Save.) Keep reading, though, and we’ll discuss all of Monday’s performances.

The battle round of Season 21 of “The Voice” came to a close on October 19 leaving coaches Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, John Legend and Ariana Grande with eight artists remaining on their teams. Throughout this round each coach was allowed one steal and one save. The eight members of each team now consist of six artists who won their battles, one losing artist each coach stole from another team and one losing artist the coach saved from their own team.
The most memorable battle of the season pitted two soul singers against each other, singing a pop/rock song and representing their country coach. When Wendy Moten and Manny Keith took the stage for Team Blake performing “If I Ever Lose My Faith in You” by Sting it was almost a foregone conclusion that Wendy would wipe the floor with the performer 25 years her junior. Manny went toe-to-toe with the seasoned...

And the winner is… No, not of The Voice, of the Monday-night cliffhanger, in which Team Kelly’s Jershika Maple was left to decide whether to join Team Legend or Team Ariana. And the winner is… well, was… John. (Cue the angry Ari stans.) From there, we dove right into Tuesday’s Battles, sending home three more competitors and reestablishing that one contestant in particular has a bag of tricks at her disposal that’s larger than most of our closets. “The Voice” entered the next stage of the competition, the battles, during Monday’s all-new episode. Per tradition, each coach brought along a superstar advisor to help mentor their aspiring artists. They were: Jason Aldean for Team Kelly Clarkson, Camila Cabello for Team John Legend, Kristin Chenoweth for Team Ariana Grande and Dierks Bentley for Team Blake Shelton. In this round, the coaches choose the pairings and the songs, and they also name the winner of each battle. The losing artist can then be “stolen” by a rival coach or “saved” by their own coach. So how did the first set of battles play out?

In the fifth blind audition episode of “The Voice” Season 21, the rivalry between “grandpa” Blake Shelton and “granddaughter” Ariana Grande heated up even more. Remember, the country judge had been pretending to be nice to the pop superstar in order to impress her massive social media following, but he shockingly turned on during Monday’s episode when he suggested she may be the “worst coach” ever. Uh-oh. Who came out on top in the Blake vs. Ariana feud, and how did fellow coaches John Legend and Kelly Clarkson react?

Heading into the fourth blind audition episode of “The Voice” Season 21, John Legend and Ariana Grande led with seven artists each on their teams. To compare, Blake Shelton (aka Ariana’s “grandpa”) had six artists and Kelly Clarkson only had five artists. There also weren’t any blocks left in play, as Ariana used hers the previous night to stop John from acquiring Holly Forbes on his team. That episode ended with a cliffhanger, with Holly about to choose her coach.
