10. Jake Sully from Avatar (2009)
James Cameron has always been one of the most celebrated directors, and the Avatar movies are among his greatest feats. Cameron managed to create visually stunning sensations that earned billions — but none of that can be attributed to Jake Sully, Avatar’s main character whose name and motives no one even remembers.
9. Sam Witwicky from Transformers (2007–2023)
Unlike in the previous case, Transformers’ Sam Witwicky adds a lot to his movie and is far from your generic action hero. But that’s pretty much his main problem: there’s little to nothing we can remember about Sam other than the facts that he was an anxious nerdy teenager who somehow pulled Megan Fox. So… Yeah. Sorry, Sam.
8. Jupiter Jones from Jupiter Ascending (2015)

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora invites players to the world of Pandora, exploring regions and other biomes of the hostile world and immersing themselves further as they take on the role of one of the Na’vi. Taking inspiration from the films, this game takes place at different points from the movies, years before Jake Sully landed and defeated the Rda occupation and mostly in the year 2169 which was 15 years after the battle of the Hallelujah Mountains.
The beauty of Pandora is truly breathtaking, especially at night when the planet is dark and stars are far more visible. The developers took their jobs way too seriously and took it up by a notch by putting the stars in the constellation of Centaurus, also known as Alpha Centauri. This adds more detail to the planet’s night sky, making it even more realistic and immersive. James Cameron’s Avatar has touched and...

Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi sequel Dune Part Two has entered the history books, earning a 9.4 average rating on IMDb, the highest score ever recorded on the popular review site. With this astronomical rating, Dune: Part Two has surpassed previous record-holders like Avengers: Endgame (8.4) and Avatar (7.8) to take the coveted number 1 spot.
Why Is Dune Part Two’s IMDb Rating So Extremely High? Timothée Chalamet starring Dune 2
Dune Part Two’s 9.4 average on IMDb edges out classics like The Godfather, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Dark Knight, which all sit between 9.1 and 9.3. Meanwhile, Avengers: Endgame garnered an 8.4 and Avatar a 7.9 – stellar scores but not on par with Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi vision.

Hollywood is going through a two-parter movie phase right now. In the past two years, we've seen big franchises like "Fast & Furious," "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," and "Mission: Impossible" all split sequels into two parts, while franchise hopefuls like "Dune" and "Rebel Moon" have also become two-parter movies. Even "Wicked" is hoping to tell its story in two movies. On paper, most of those decisions make some sense: Those are big genre movies with loads of story (and a lot of potential money to be made from extending that story), so rather than make one very long movie, they've opted for two. What is much more surprising is seeing a Western join that club. But that isn't stopping Kevin Costner from turning his passion project "Horizon: An American Saga" into one of the biggest box office gambles of 2024. This is Costner's first directorial effort in 21 years, and much like in 2003 with "Open Range,...

An Avatar: The Way of Water star just confirmed his villain's return in 2025's Avatar 3 despite being believed to be dead in the sci-fi universe.
In James Cameron's original Avatar and Avatar 2, the Resources Development Administration (Rda) and its military mercenaries, led by Stephen Lang's Colonel Miles Quaritch, filled the role of the franchise's villains.
Despite losing to Jake Sully at the end of The Way of Water, Quaritch was left alive for a future comeback; and despite what fans first thought, he isn't the only one.

It’s hard to explain exactly what inspired this list. Maybe we just wanted to rave some more about Pixar. Maybe watching Avatar again and the new sequel Avatar: The Way of Water boggled our minds. Whatever it was, it’s done, and we can’t take it back (the delete key is broken). It is kind of strange that there are so many blue movie characters. If we wanted to do, say, Best Red Characters in Movies, it would just be five pictures of Hellboy and five pictures of Darth Maul. Travel below to see our picks for the very best blue characters in movie history!

With only two films in James Cameron’s Avatar series since 2009, it is challenging to imagine the existence of five installments by 2031, let alone two more movies later. That’s right, folks. I said two more movies! According to James Cameron, he has ideas for Avatar 6 and Avatar 7, but there’s a twist. Instead of dedicating the remainder of his mortality to the effects-driven, money-printing franchise, he could pass the torch to another filmmaker.
Speaking with Collider about the Avatar franchise’s future, Cameron said, “We’re fully written through movie five, and I’ve got ideas for six and seven, although I’ll probably be handing the baton on at that point,” he said. “I mean, mortality catches up. But I mean, we’re enjoying what we’re doing. We’re loving it. We get to work with great people.”

Sam Worthington as Jake Sully in Twentieth Century Fox’s Avatar. Photo by Mark Fellman. ©Twentieth Century Fox. All Rights Reserved. When James Cameron filmed the first Avatar movie, he was coming off the success of the biggest hit in Hollywood history, Titanic. But the release of Avatar would come 12 years after the release of Titanic, an eternity in Hollywood time. Would Avatar be able to replicate the success of Titanic? Or would it sink without a trace? Of course, 15 years later, we know the answer — it took Titanic’s crown as the top-grossing movie. But when the movie was released, not even Cameron was sure what would happen. As Sam Worthington later told us, nobody who worked on the film could have predicted the incredible success of Avatar. Get ready, because we're going back to Pandora! Well, at least the cast is, because Sam Worthington confirmed in an interview with People Magazine that the next "Avatar" movie will go back to shooting soon.

It is common for actors to say things like "it's bigger than you can imagine" or that a sequel is "bigger than the first," but if there's a franchise where this is something worth paying attention to and believing in, it's James Cameron's "Avatar." James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water became the biggest hit of 2022 in the tail-end of that year. The worldwide box office take certainly proved that the franchise still had legs. Even before the sci-fi epic released, Cameron revealed that principal photography had wrapped on Avatar 3 since filming back-to-back with The Way of Water, and the movie’s post-production journey was well underway. Additionally, Cameron had been shooting Avatar 4 and accounted for a break in production to allow the children in the cast to grow since the story would feature a six-year time jump.

It’s easy to underestimate just how good James Cameron is at what he does, at least until someone tries to copy his homework, like when Michael Bay set out to turn Pearl Harbor into the next Titanic. Now, with Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, we have a piece of media trying to do the same but within Cameron’s own universe. And to the extent that the game doesn’t have you play as Jake Sully and allows you to explore Pandora on your own—that is, the experience isn’t guided by Cameron’s directorial hand—the attempt isn’t without merit.
It helps that Frontiers of Pandora ably captures the breathtakingly vast biodiversity of Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water, as well as channels their sense of expansiveness. But even as much as Cameron’s epic films can be taken to task for not building a strong...

Jake Sully bonding with his dragon-like Ikran and soaring across the skies of Pandora is one of the most iconic scenes from 2009’s Avatar. Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment’s new video game, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, lets players tame their own Ikran first-hand, but there’s an undercurrent to the game’s depiction of this Na’vi rite of passage that profoundly sets it apart from the movie.
“This scene is very much reflective of my own experience as a mixed-race Black person,” explains the game’s senior narrative designer, Chella Ramanan. “When the player attempts to bond with its Ikran, it begs the question, ‘Am I Na’vi enough to do this? What if I get rejected?’ It’s about an internal identity crisis.”

Star Wars has inspired many creatives and filmmakers alike, including movie director James Cameron. But Cameron had a surprising reaction the first time he saw the film in theaters.
How James Cameron was impacted by ‘Star Wars’ James Cameron | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
As is the case with many filmmakers, Cameron was inspired by several directors and films while carving out his own path as a filmmaker. Cameron has frequently spoken about Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey influencing him in his younger years. The Don Chaffey movie Jason and the Argonauts also left an unforgettable impression on a young Cameron.
“I remember distinctly my grandfather taking me to the local cinema in Ontario, and being absolutely blown away by the film’s vivid colors, the brightness, the reality of the skeleton fight. Of course, looking at it four decades later, it’s laughable,” Cameron once told DGA. “But I...

Thirteen years after Academy Award®-winner James Cameron introduced viewers to a world unlike any they had ever seen with his breathtaking film Avatar, Disney+ Hotstar is now streaming the eagerly awaited sequel Avatar: The Way of Water. This groundbreaking cinematic odyssey unveils a new underwater adventure that promises to mesmerise viewers again.
Returning to reprise their iconic roles, Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña portray Jake Sully and Neytiri, devoted parents doing everything possible to protect their family. Joining them are Academy Award® winner Kate Winslet and other esteemed actors Sigourney Weaver, Cliff Curtis and Stephen Lang.
Many were surprised to learn about Stephen Lang’s return to the sequel after the death of his character Colonel Miles Quaritch, in Avatar, who played the human antagonist. However, this time with the Resources Development Administration (Rda) returning to the moon with reinforcement, Lang returns as a recombinant, or recom, of his character.

With the ongoing writers strike, it was expected that a number of productions would see delays. Just this week, Disney announced that several of their major titles would be pushed back, including future Avatar entries, with the third installment now expected in 2025. As a result, the rest of James Cameron’s films will see much later releases, with the fifth installment – once planned for 2028 – now slated for 2031. And Zoe Saldaña, who plays Neytiri in the series, has some feelings about these Avatar delays…

Zoe Saldaña knows what time it is.
News has broken that Avatar 3, the next installment in the franchise, has had its release date pushed back. Originally slated for next year, the film is now anticipated in 2025. That also means the sequels will be accordingly bumped into the future.
Saldaña, who plays the alien Neytiri, noted the new date on her Instagram story. Its caption said it all: “Great! I’m gonna be 53 when the last ‘Avatar’ comes out.”
She added: “I was 27 when I shot the very first ‘Avatar.'”
The intense CGI required for each installment has been blamed for the delays.
In response to the announcement, producer Jon Landau wrote on Twitter: “Each ‘Avatar’ film is an exciting but epic undertaking that takes time to bring to the quality level we as filmmakers strive for and audiences have come to expect. The team is hard at...

The Walt Disney Company dropped a deluge of new release dates on Tuesday, including two “Star Wars” movies in a single year, along with a bunch of Marvel delays, a big delay for the “Avatar” saga and a firm slot for that live-action “Moana” movie. Save for the in-production “Deadpool 3,” which actually moved up to May 2024, this means fans will have to wait a little longer for most of their favorite Disney IP expansions. And it all started with one move.
“A delay with ‘Avatar 3’ caused a domino effect that shifted much of Disney’s future theatrical slate,” an industry insider told TheWrap.
Beyond the individual circumstances behind each movie’s new release date, the overall impact is one that protects Marvel from strike-related complications and assures that Bob Iger’s shadow looms large over his replacement well after he steps down as Disney’s CEO for the second time,...

The joint streaming rights between Disney+ and Max is the product of an unusual deal signed last year that allows Max to share streaming windows with Disney+ and Hulu for half the studio’s titles through the 2022 release year. It’s good news for “Avatar” fans, who are less likely to need to subscribe to a new streamer in order to watch the sequel from home. Director James Cameron, whose ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ charmed audience in theatres owing to its exceptional visuals, has shared that his team had to write four movies before he could start the work on ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’.

Matt Damon believes turning down a role in 'Avatar' was the "dumbest thing an actor ever did". The 52-year-old star is thought to have missed out on a $250 million payday by rejecting the role of Jake Sully - which went to Sam Worthington - in James Cameron's 2009 sci-fi epic. He was offered 10 per cent of the movie's box office profits if he took on the part, and by turning down the role he also missed out on the chance to team up with fellow lead actor Zoe Saldana (Neytiri). Damon told 'Entertainment Tonight': "It’s the dumbest thing an actor ever did in the history of acting."But Saldana told him: "I don’t think your career suffered because of it, trust me."She joked: "I've just always felt blessed that I was picked, that I worked really hard and auditioned. "I'm not Matt Damon.

There's a fine art to playing a character who all but chews up the scenery. It takes a precise awareness of tone, a deft touch to make all the deceptively subtle moments land just as hard as the more outsized ones, and a willingness to risk looking silly or even foolish. So when Hollywood mainstay Ray Stevenson first joined the cast of "Rrr," the Telugu-language epic that swept the globe and redefined the very meaning of "maximalist cinema," those in the know sat up and took notice to see exactly what the actor would bring to the villainous role of Governor Scott Buxton, the British Raj commander who poses the single largest threat to freedom fighters Bheem (N. T. Rama Rao Jr.) and Raju (Ram Charan) and their peoples' way of life.

James Cameron's "Avatar: The Way of Water," currently the third highest-grossing film of all time, is a clunky but well-meaning anti-colonialist fable about gentle Na'vi aliens fighting off an infiltrating, military-forward human army. In the future of "Avatar," humans have laid waste to their own planet and hope to relocate to the Edenic planet Pandora. Humans cannot breathe the air on Pandora, however, and have devised a way to shunt their consciousnesses into part-Na'vi clones. The Na'vi live in harmony with their planet, and, thanks to a quirk of their biology, are able to physically link their brains into a massive, planetwide consciousness they call Eywa. As a storyteller, Cameron may fall on the "massively blunt" side, but his dazzling digital visuals and natural world fantasies sure are pretty to look at. "The Way of Water" is best when its Na'vi characters are merely swimming around looking at alien fish and befriending superintelligent whales.
