Alon Nechushtan’s latest project, Moving Voices, is coming to the U.S. through the month of November! The New York based jazz pianist will be joined by his international quartet, comprised of François and Louis Moutin, two brothers from France, and Lisbon-born vocalist Sara Serpa.
Moving Voices, which consists of original compositions from Nechushtan, is aimed to amplify immigrant voices and other inspirational stories centered around ordinary people who make extraordinary voyages, moving to and from new homes. Juxtapositions between perspectives present the promise of hope and idealization of journeys to the US with the terror-inspiring survival stories of the French migrant camp known as “the Jungle” to serve as the impetus in this movingly ambitious project. The compositions utilize excerpts from Pakistani poet Faiz Ahmad Faiz, African poet Lenrie Peters, Italian Jewish Primo Levi’s emotional poem ‘Voices’, and Ethiopian-born writer Alemayehu Gebrehiwot, to tell stories about emigrating,...

Dev Anand was forever on our TV screens. My mother and aunts were huge fans. But my mother also had bundles of Filmfare magazines, and large black discs of gramophones with beautiful covers of Indian actors and actresses.
Her favourite was Dilip Kumar and a close second was Dev Anand. Dev Anand lit up the screen with his perfect groomed hair, perfectly fitted clothes and the aura he gave off of wealth and sophistication other stars of his time lacked. Dev Anand could be playing an alcoholic and he would have not a single hair out of place like in “Sharabi” (1964).
When I went to Government College University Lahore for my MPhil, my mother’s response was: “Dev Anand went to Government College.” How cool was I!
Dev Anand did his BA in English from the college – and fell in love with a classmate too, according to his autobiography, but...

The title of the film is intriguing indeed, and viewers like myself have more inquisitiveness about the content in the narrative, more so when someone like a Vishal Bhardwaj’s name is involved. Like father like son; with the helmer being his son, it is more than apparent that the genre of the film must be dark. ‘Kuttey’ is Vishal’s son Aasmaan Bhardwaj’s directorial debut.
Prologue
It appears that Aasmaan has been religiously following his fathers’ footsteps and learnt the craft like an obedient mentee. For a debut film with amazing actors, Kuttey is a very cunning & crafty crime thriller. It also showcases the vision of the first timer from the shots, lighting and the atmosphere designed for the narrative. It is not usual that one would find the subject in front of the camera not in the centre of the frame and is not ‘obviously speaking to...

Getting back to set is one of the most enjoyable times for actors these days. The 7 month hiatus has been hard on most, after their choc-a-bloc schedules came to a grinding halt due to the pandemic. Thus, when a start-to-finish schedule was lined up for her upcoming project in Lucknow, Richa Chadha was happy to be back at work.

From the very first scene, we are introduced to the world of Saadat Hasan Manto in Nandita Das’ “Manto”. It is not his life that we are introduced το, but the world of ideas that constantly took shape in his fertile imagination; however, we do get into the world he lived in in the very next scene. It is the world of a colonized India on the brink of independence. After World War II, it seemed likely that India would get its independence, however people were still unsure about the circumstances it would come in.
In a emotionally moving scene from the movie, Manto, a free-thinking Indian Muslim looks on from the window of his bedroom the euphoria of people celebrating outside, there are fireworks all around and optimism about the future. He asks his wife to join him and look at the spectacle, he picks up his young infant and whispers,...

This landmark film about Bengali fisherfolk fighting to survive in a world of hunger and loan sharks is finally getting its due
Row me away, boatman
I am but a cloud
Above a river of woes
All alone
In the dark night...
Without a homeland
I have lived forever in exile...
Soon our sorrows shall come to an end
Look, the day has dawned.
Sung sweetly over the melancholic tones of an Indian flute, these alternately bleak and hopeful lines encapsulate the condition of South Asia’s long-suffering rural proletariat. Penned by revolutionary poet Faiz Ahmad Faiz and paired with the exquisite cinematography of German-born British cameraman Walter Lassally, they make for a memorable opening to Pakistan’s first serious attempt at modernist cinematic realism: Day Shall Dawn (Jago Hua Savera).

Pallavi Joshi, who is returning to Bollywood after 20 years and will be seen in husband, filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri’s political drama ‘Buddha In A Traffic Jam’ has also turned singer. “I’ve sung Chand Roz, which is a ghazal by Faiz Ahmad Faiz. It’s a background track in the film,” reveals Pallavi.
Talking about making her debut as a singer, Pallavi reveals that it was on her husband’s insistence that she decided to sing for a film for the first time. “I had hosted a music-based show for almost seven years but I had never thought of playback. For ‘Buddha In A Traffic Jam’, Vivek had wanted a very raw and unplugged kind of a quality to the najm and he suggested that I try it out since even though I am a trained classical singer, it’s not a very polished style. Eminent poet and film lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri needs no introduction. He belonged to the legacy of learned lyricist like Sahir Ludhianvi, Kaifi Azmi, Shakeel Badayuni etc. who blossomed as literary poets but took to penning songs to make a decent earning.
List of songs penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri are long. They range from K. L. Saigal's Jab Dil Hi Toot Gaya.. (Shahjahan) to Aamir Khan's Pehla Nasha.. (Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar). Other hits songs include Jaane Walo Zara Mudh Ke Dekho Mujhe... (Dosti), Jalte Hain Jiske Liye... (Sujata), Kya Hua Tera Vada... (Hum Kisise Kum Naheen), Ek Din Bik Jayega Maati Ke Mol... Once for the movie Chirag (1969), staring Sunil Dutt and Asha Parekh, film director Raj Khosla asked Majrooh Sahab to pen a song which could emphasize the beauty of eye because the film's plot centered on the heroine's attractive eyes and how her world goes...

The dubbing does subject the content to some tonal drubbing. And one wishes the Indian distributors had just let the characters speak the way they felt. Misguided vocalization cannot take away from the power and inner strengths of Mira Nair’s newest work.
The abject isolation of an individual as he or she grapples with the shifting emotional and cultural dynamics of a society that doesn’t have much patience with dilemmas of the diaspora, is a recurrent theme in Mira Nair’s remarkable oeuvre.
It could be that sassy street boy Krishna in Salaam Bombay peering resentfully into the rolled-up windows of the rich and the privileged as they whisk away his unrealized dreams. It could the high-flying Amelia Earhart kissing the clouds as she flies that plane in splendid solitude in Amelia.
