Founded by Maxwell Gaines in 1944, the Entertaining Comics brand (a.k.a. EC Comics) initially specialized in educational comics and stories aimed at children. But after Gaines died in a boating accident in ’47, his 25-year-old son William took control of the company and changed its direction, exploring the genres of horror, sci-fi, and satire while bringing us classic titles like Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, The Haunt of Fear, Weird Science, Weird Fantasy, and Mad. Sadly, EC Comics was at its peak when parents started to worry about the negative effects reading comic books could have on their children, leading to things like a Congressional hearing that blamed comic books for juvenile delinquency – a claim that was backed up by the book Seduction of the Innocent, written by psychiatrist Fredric Wertham. So by 1956, EC Comics ceased publishing all of their titles except for Mad. Those classic EC...

In the early 1950s, EC Comics was the bad boy of comic publishers. Its comics such as Tales From the Crypt, Weird Science and Two-Fisted Tales sold millions in mid-century America. Unfortunately, its stories — at times shocking, horrifying, and even progressive — also drew scrutiny and backlash, and the company found itself in the cross hairs of censorship and regulation at the height of the McCarthy era. The company ultimately shuttered, with the last comic hitting newsstands and drug stores in 1956.
Now, seventy years after the creation of the self-regulatory body Comics Code Authority, the infamous comics company is blasting out of the crypt and returning with a brand new line of comics.
Oni Press, the publisher perhaps best known for the breakout indie hit Scott Pilgrim, has partnered with William M. Gaines Agent, Inc., the rights holders of the EC line, to launch all-new stories with A-list comics creators beginning this summer.

It's hard out there to be a bad guy. Your legitimate grievances with society go ignored until you blow up a planet over it, and then suddenly everyone's paying attention to the wrong thing. Or your legitimate grievances receive attention but go unresolved, and when you genetically engineer people to turn into dinosaurs, suddenly you're a meme. Even worse, should you get somewhere with your goals, nobody is happy with you and the heroes band up to kill you and undo your hard work. Can't we ever just talk things out? Over a lava lake with magma sharks in it?
Or, perhaps you realize you were going about things the wrong way, and you make an effort to turn the situation around. You experience regret, grow as a person, and then, well, redemption usually equals death in stories like that. As nearly all of us experienced, 2022 was particularly tough on...

This post contains spoilers for "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever."
One of my favorite two-dimensional crushes has finally entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe in all his live-action glory! Played by Tenoch Huerta Mejía, Namor the Sub-Mariner is the main antagonist of "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," though you won't hear me call him a villain. Similarly to Erik Killmonger, who was the Big Bad in "Black Panther," Namor may be at odds with our heroes, but that doesn't necessarily make him a villain. Much like his comic counterpart, the Sub-Mariner is a very complex character.
Co-writer (with Joe Robert Cole) and director Ryan Coogler called dibs on bringing Namor to life quite a while ago and completely reimagined him for the MCU. While so many aspects of the Sub-Mariner have changed going from page to screen, his motivations of protecting the seas and his people have been kept intact. If you've seen "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,...

Spoilers for "Black Panther: Wakanda" Forever follow.
While it can be a somber and reverent experience due to the loss of franchise star Chadwick Boseman, the titular hero King T'Challa, and the process of moving forward without either of them, "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" also maintains an element of joy. We're not just talking about the happiness that True Believers get when a new Marvel Studios movie debuts in theaters, either. Ryan Coogler's follow-up to his hit 2018 superhero movie is infused with the exuberance of a true celebration of culture and life. And though the things that bring us joy in the Phase Four finale are the characters like Shuri, M'Baku, Okoye, Nakia, the people of Wakanda, and their resilience in the face of tragedy, the House of Ideas continues to spread tiny bits of happiness throughout their projects for eagle-eyed viewers with the help of well placed Easter eggs.

I mentioned fairly recently that Marvel of late have been muscling in on DC’s territory, with a whole raft of alternate world/ alternate universe/ what if type stuff, across TV, film, and comics. Nothing wrong with that of course, as it gives creators a clean slate to work with, and a chance to write fanboy tinged stories. We all love a bit of that, right? My only gripe sometimes is that we need a little more substance to some of these stories, as once that initial thrill of ‘Steve Rodgers is Iron Man’ wears off, is there a good story in there. This book promises a lot, with Jason Aaron writing and Ed McGuiness pencilling, so we should get the holy trinity of a great idea, great writer, and great artist. Let’s take a look.

At every turn during the first three Star Wars movies, Boba Fett proved to be an inefficient bounty hunter. After all, he never managed to track down the heroes as per his instructions. But despite that, the character has retained his reputation as one of the most iconic individuals in the story of the Skywalker Saga.
The Mandalorian first appeared in The Empire Strikes Back as one of the Empire’s henchmen, but according to a canonical comic book, he already had a run-in with Luke Skywalker before the events of the film. In 2015’s Star Wars series by Jason Aaron and John Cassaday, the son of Darth Vader travels back to Tatooine to seek answers in Ben Kenobi’s old residence. At the same time, Boba Fett is interrogating a bunch of Mos Eisley locals to learn more about the mysterious hero of the Rebellion.

More characters from Robert E. Howard will join Conan the Barbarian in the Marvel Universe.
Marvel Comics has signed a deal to bring more of Conan the Barbarian creator Robert E. Howard’s works to Marvel. Since Conan arrived back at Marvel earlier this year, the company has had great success with the most savage hero of all. Marvel has delighted fans’ bloodlust with both Conan the Barbarian by Jason Aaron and Savage Sword of Conan by a rotating group of bloodthirsty creators. Marvel has also featured Conan leading ladies Belit and Valeria in the Age of Conan series as well as bringing Conan into the Marvel Universe in the pages of Savage Avengers. Conan and Punisher is a thing I never knew I wanted until I got it.
But now the bloody bond between Marvel and Robert E. Howard’s greatest creation is about to get a whole lot bigger.

Even though I’m someone who expects for certain mainstay heroes to remain on the major super teams, I do enjoy the occasional oddball additions to the lineups. In other words, I think it’s cool seeing Batwoman as a member of the Justice League, or Wolverine suiting up with the Avengers.
So, if you’re in the same boat, then you probably dig Blade joining up with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Granted, this isn’t entirely new ground to be broken because the daywalker did feature prominently Mark Millar’s Ultimate Comics Avengers once upon a time ago, even if that took place in another universe.
But if you like to argue semantics and yearned for something similar in the 616, then you may want to pay attention to what Jason Aaron’s been doing lately in his run. Long story short, Avengers #10 saw Janet Van Dyne embark on a...

Marvel’s “Fresh Start” initiative is essentially just the latest relaunch, and as a result we have another Avengers #1. It’s an appropriate time to relaunch Marvel’s flagship book, though, with a whole new creative team taking charge. Jason Aaron is the new Avengers writer, and he’s continuing the story he launched in last year’s Marvel Legacy one-shot. The issue’s release is also timed for straight after Infinity War hit the theaters, a smart bit of planning.
With Brian Michael Bendis now having left for rival publisher DC Comics, Jason Aaron and Dan Slott are essentially becoming Marvel’s flagship writers. Aaron’s Thor run has demonstrated that he loves to play the long game; the seeds of the Mangog’s arrival were sown as far back as his Thor: God of Thunder run in 2014. That means this is probably the first issue in an epic that will run for years,...

Avengers: Infinity War, Justice League and Marvel’s Civil War – three mind-bogglingly huge movie crossovers that represent years of groundwork and intricate plotting. But they all pale in comparison to Avengers Vs. X-Men.
Originally dreamed up by Brian Michael Bendis, Matt Fraction, Jason Aaron, Ed Brubaker and Jonathan Hickman in 2012, the comic brought together a whole host of famous faces – namely Captain America, Cyclops, Hulk, Iceman, Iron Man, Magneto, Spider-Man and Storm – for what turned out to be a crossover event like no other. And thanks to Disney’s newly-unveiled takeover of 20th Century Fox, a film version of Avengers Vs. X-Men may soon become a reality.
That’s all well and good, but the one question on every fan’s mind is who exactly will be involved in the sure to be epic event? With the contracts of Marvel stalwarts like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and more nearing their end,...

Before I get into my reviews I want to talk about the recent news regarding Wolverines return from the dead. After his appearance on Legacy #1 it has been confirmed that the original 616 continuity Wolverine will be back with us very soon. The road to his return starts in January 2018. He will appear in a series of ‘post credit scenes’ in key titles Captain America #697, Mighty Thor #703 and Amazing Spider-Man #794. Now I am a Wolverine completest but I can say right now I will not be buying these three issues or any other issues with Wolverine ‘post credit scenes’. Call me old fashioned but one of the premier X-Men should return in an X book or one of the two Wolverine titles. Of course after these ‘post credit’ appearances that could still happen and I hope we get a larger story involving his return in the two Wolverine titles or mini.

Thor: Ragnarok is undoubtedly one of the most entertaining McU films to date, and a big reason why is because it’s busting with ideas, with the movie acting as a kind of blend of various different comic book storylines. Apart from dealing with the events of Ragnarok, there’s a lot of Planet Hulk in it, too, as well as bits of recent Thor comics from writer Jason Aaron.
With the net cast so wide for comic book inspiration, then, it’s not surprising that the threequel is stuffed full of easter eggs, callbacks and references to a huge variety of Marvel characters, creators and stories. As you’ve surely heard – and probably seen, too – one individual who’s nodded to is Beta Ray Bill – a fan favorite hero from the comics who possesses the rare quality of being worthy enough to wield Mjolnir.

Being my fifth blog milestone it is fate that the comic gods have dealt me a good hand this month. Marvel Legacy #1 by Jason Aaron and a whole bunch of artists dropped last week. After the last issue and now this one this story arc is going places. It just adds weight to the claim not every story has to be six issues. There are still a few problems with it but now my enjoyment has been increased they feel very minor.

Marvel’s had a tough year, with the House of Ideas struggling to cope with poor sales performance. Needless to say, the solution is apparently the latest relaunch, known as Marvel Legacy. It’s all kicking off with this week’s #1, a one-shot that establishes the overarching narrative for everything that’s about to happen. That’s an approach Marvel pioneered back in the ’90s, with the “Age of Apocalypse” event, and it’s been repeated many times.
The company has assembled some of their top talent for this book, writer Jason Aaron and artist Esad Ribic. Aaron really is one of Marvel’s best, a storyteller who got his big break when he won a Marvel talent competition and got to write an eight-page Wolverine tale. He’s best known for his ongoing series of The Mighty Thor, for a lengthy and much-loved Wolverine run, and for a tremendous Doctor Strange arc.
