Fans of the Power franchise are losing Ghost again — but this time, it’s the series.
Starz has canceled Power Book II: Ghost, with the show’s fourth season to serve as its last. It will be broken into two parts, premiering June 7 and September 6. Watch the teaser above.
The move was prefaced by Starz CEO Jeffrey Hirsch this week when he revealed plans to contain content costs by developing more new shows versus sustaining series longer as they become more expensive.
Using the Power franchise as an example, he said: “You look at the [Power] map and say, ‘Ok, if I take one of those characters out and spin one of those out, I can bring that on to replace the Power show at half the cost.’ Now I’m putting a lot of money right to the bottom line. And I’m really not losing anything in terms of acquisition costs and subscriber viewership,...

If there's one thing "Power Book II: Ghost" has proven in season three, it's that nobody's safe - not even original characters who survived the spinoff's parent series. In a rather shocking and completely unexpected turn of events, the Starz series has done away with a character that viewers have been waiting almost a decade to see meet his downfall: Cooper Saxe (Shane Johnson).
For years, Saxe has miraculously figured out ways to escape a lot of close calls - including almost getting strangled to death by Ghost (Omari Hardwick) and Tommy (Joseph Sikora) in "Power" - but his conniving ways have finally caught up to him in a fatal conclusion, as with most "Power" antagonists.
After six seasons of "Power" and three installments of "Power Book II," it's nearly impossible to list all the dirt Saxe has done through the years. In the original series, his relentless hunt to...

Dark secrets have been controlling all the action so far in "Power Book II: Ghost" season three, but episode five marks what showrunner Brett Mahoney calls the "true turning point" that's put everyone on notice.
The episode, titled "No More Second Chances," picks up after the shooting death of Detective Kevin Whitman (Jeff Hephner) in Monet's (Mary J. Blige) house, with the feds snooping around on suspicion that her self-defense excuse is really a murder cover-up. There's also the fact that Monet has finally figured out who killed her son Zeke: her husband, Lorenzo (Berto Colón). Then, on the other side of "Power Book II," Tariq (Michael Rainey Jr.), his girlfriend, Effie (Alix Lapri), and partner-in-crime, Brayden (Gianni Paolo), get roped into a mess overseas during their business trip to Italy, as the latter gets kidnapped while on a mission for their new drug connect, Noma (Caroline Chikezie).

Karma comes back to bite in "Power Book II: Ghost" season three as yet another major character meets their end. In episode five, "No More Second Chances," Lorenzo (Berto Colón) meets his inevitable end after his wife, Monet (Mary J. Blige), finally avenges her son Zeke's death by getting back at his actual killer. The Tejada patriarch may have thought he was in the clear after he framed a Tgt gang member for Zeke's murder, whom Monet killed previously, but all his lies eventually catch up to him - and an unexpected family member (that's not Monet) turns out to be responsible for his tragic demise.
As viewers know, Lorenzo's fate has been decided since "Power Book II"'s action-packed season two finale, as he accidentally murders Zeke by mistaking him for Monet's ex, Mecca (Daniel Sunjata). Lorenzo's oldest son, Cane (Woody McClain), eventually figures out what he did, and...

"Power Book II: Ghost" is known for throwing viewers a curveball (or several) now and then, and season three, which premiered on March 17, is no exception. So far, new characters have been introduced, while one has reappeared after being seemingly killed off. But viewers are saddened to see that one familiar face hasn't returned for the new season.
Season two of the hit Starz drama introduced defense attorney Davis MacLean's (Method Man) brother, Theo Rollins, who's in prison for taking the fall for a manslaughter charge for the crooked lawyer. That season, Theo was played by Redman, the rap icon and well-known Method Man collaborator.

The third season premiere of Power Book II: Ghost drew the biggest opening weekend audience ever for a Starz series, the premium cable outlet says.
The show’s March 17 debut brought in 5.8 million viewers across all platforms over its first three days, according to Nielsen and internal data. That makes it the biggest premiere weekend ever for a Starz original series.
Though Starz didn’t break down viewers by platform, based on viewing patterns for other premium series, a large majority of the audience likely streamed the Ghost premiere. The show’s on-air premiere brought in 362,000 viewers, per Nielsen — just 6 percent of the three-day total. That’s in keeping with shows like HBO’s Euphoria, Showtime’s Yellowjackets, and Starz’s own P-Valley, whose initial, on-air viewership makes up just a small fraction of the total.
The 5.8 million viewers also includes multiple replays on the Starz cable channel over the weekend.

Surprise, "Power Book II: Ghost" fans - Lauren is back! Well, technically, according to season three's March 17 premiere, she never actually left. As viewers may remember, Lauren (played by Paige Hurd) was thought to have been killed off by Effie (Alix Lapri) and Brayden (Gianni Paolo) in season two's penultimate episode. After it's discovered that she's working with Ada Jenny Sullivan (Paton Ashbrook) and catches Brayden, her boyfriend, Tariq (Michael Rainey Jr.), and Cane (Woody McClain) talking about their drug dealings on a wire, Effie and Brayden, unbeknownst to Tariq, take Lauren out to the woods to kill her - all in an effort to avoid criminal charges.
Though viewers didn't see Hurd's character actually die, many believed that scene marked the end of the road for her, with Jenny later revealing that Lauren's body was found by locals after a "car accident." That turns out to be a complete lie,...

Per an official release from Starz, Season 3 promises to be even “flashier, sexier, and juicier” than anything we’ve seen yet.
“The third season of ‘Power Book II: Ghost’ kicks off with Tariq St. Patrick determined to get his trust, get back to his family, and get out of the game for good,” reads the Starz synopsis. “The emergence of a ruthless new connect interrupts Tariq’s plans to reunite with Tasha and Yaz and puts him, Brayden, and Effie back into business with the Tejadas as they’re challenged to move more weight than ever before. “Power never dies.” That was the tagline (and obligatory hashtag) used back in early 2020 to tease an ambitious brand expansion of Starz’s popular drug-trade drama, “Power.” As the flagship series wound down, the sizzle trailer insisted that while the show’s antihero protagonist — played by Omari Hardwick — might have drawn his last breath, there was plenty of oxygen left in the franchise. It seemed almost fanciful at the time — four spin-offs announced at once?!? — but three successful shows launched within two years’ time goes beyond proof of concept. Not only is “Power” alive and well, its heart rate is robust.
February saw the premiere of “Power Book IV: Force,” the franchise’s third extension, focused on Tommy Egan (Joseph Sikora), one of the “Power” universe’s many virtuosic cocaine dealers. “Force” set an all-time viewership record for Starz, tallying 3.3 million cross-platform viewers for its premiere. The never-ending cycle of drama continues to raise the stakes in "Power Book II: Ghost." While the show's season two finale closed the book on some character's chapters, it opened up a whole new can of worms as more secrets and bodies pile up. The show's second season leaves off with a few cliffhangers that will certainly blow up in season three - including the murders of Monet's (Mary J. Blige) son Zeke (Daniel Bellomy) and her former lover/child's father, Mecca (Daniel Sunjata). And somewhere between all the mayhem is Tariq (Michael Rainey Jr.) who, fresh off his murder trial, will likely be roped into another investigation.
"Tariq ties up these loose ends and as soon as those get tied up, another end gets loose."
"As we saw in the end, they got [Detective] Blanca and she pulled up some pictures of Tariq, and she's familiar with him so we...

Starz announced that “Power Book II: Ghost” has been renewed for Season 3.

Jussie Smollett insisted to a Chicago courtroom Monday that the violent attack against him in early 2019 “was no hoax.”
On the stand in his own defense, the ex-Empire star called the assault by men hurling punches and homophobic and racial slurs and shouting “Maga country” to be “something out of Looney Tune adventures.”
Asked directly by special prosecutor Daniel Webb in cross-examination if he wanted the police to treat his attack as a “hate crime,” Smollett replied that he “wanted police to solve a crime that had happened to me.”
Holding to his story under one-time Iran-Contra lawyer Webb’s sometimes intense questioning, Smollett said it was “fully false, 100 percent false” that he planned or paid anyone to stage an attack on him.
Facing half a dozen felony charges spiraling out of the alleged hate crime that soon afterward was characterized by Chicago police, politicians and prosecutors as probably a PR stunt,...

“Empire” might have come to a premature conclusion this spring, but at least one of the Lyons could be reigning over Fox again soon, as Taraji P. Henson has a Cookie-led spinoff in the works at the broadcast network.
All we know for now is the project, which is backed by “Empire” co-creators Lee Daniels and Danny Strong, “follows what’s next for Cookie.” Should it be ordered to pilot, Henson is set to star in and executive produce the potential series, which hails from “Empire” studio 20th Century Fox Television.
Strong, Stacy A. Littlejohn and Yolonda Lawrence are writing the script with Sanaa Hamri set to direct. Executive producers include Daniels, Strong, Littlejohn, Lawrence, Hamri, and Henson, along with Brian Grazer and Samie Falvey for Imagine Entertainment.

Development of a spinoff of the Danny Strong and Lee Daniels created series’ iconic matriarch is the first order of business in a new first look deal that Taraji P. Henson has signed with 20th Century Fox TV.
To that end, the Golden Globe winning and Emmy and Academy Award nominated Henson has teamed up with Working Title alum Christine Conley to have the latter run her newly formed Tph Entertainment.
Coming out the gate, the long rumored Cookie series will be penned and EP’d by Strong, Stacy A. Littlejohn and Yolonda Lawrence.
