Editors’ Note: This interview is the first in a series commemorating the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop on August 11
“I mean, there were people who used to look at us at that time and say, ‘Where is the band?’” recalls LL Cool J of hip-hop’s early years and the reaction audiences would have.
As the genre hits its 50th birthday on August 11, no one is asking where the band is anymore. The culture that has emerged out of what Kool Herc was doing that night in 1973 in the rec room of 1520 Sedgwick Ave. in the West Bronx is the most popular musical genre on the planet.
One of the first mainstream stars of hip-hop, LL Cool J himself has come a long way from dropping his “I Need a Beat” single back in 1984. A multi-Grammy winner, a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and the first rapper to receive a Kennedy Center Honor,...

With how much controversy Justin Blau A.K.A. 3Lau has brought upon himself over the past week, the timing of the release of his first Emma Hewitt collaboration wasn’t ideal, but that doesn’t change the fact it’s a quality piece of music. 3Lau debuted “Alive Again” on Armin Van Buuren’s A State Of Trance radio show, and it’s safe to say that that won’t be the only place you’ll hear it in the months to follow.
A soft melody accompanies Hewitt’s angelic vocals through the verse and chorus before a tempestuous uplift carries the listener to a soaring synth lead. Having worked with trance producers like Dash Berlin and Cosmic Gate, this is familiar territory for Hewitt – and her vocal stylings make for the perfect accompaniment to its euphoric melodies.

A New York jury has awarded the Beastie Boys $1.7 million in the rap trio’s copyright violation lawsuit against Monster Energy drink. At issue was a mix by DJ Z-Trip used by Monster Energy that included five Beastie Boys songs, including “Sabotage” and “Pass the Mic.” DJ Z-Trip gave the drink manufacturer permission to use the mix for a recap of a snowboarding competition it sponsored, but Monster Energy did not have the Beastie Boys’ permission. From the start of the New York Federal Court trial, Monster Energy admitted it was at fault, so the trial was to determine damages. Monster Energy wanted to pay $125,000, the two remaining Beastie Boys, Adam “Ad Rock” Horovitz and Michael “Mike D” Diamond, wanted $2 million— $1 million for the copyright infringement and $1 million for Monster Energy implying that the Beastie Boys’ endorsed the usage. Both Horovitz and Diamond testified at the trial. Among the facts...

Beastie Boys' suit against Monster Energy has ended, with jurors finding against the beverage company to the tune of $1.7 million. Fifteen years ago, DJ Shadow pushed sample-based music into a new place with his moody, deeply layered debut album “Endtroducing…” Instead of familiar hip-hop patterns of assembled beats and instrumental loops, Shadow (aka Josh Davis) grabbed from wide-ranging sources, from rock records to film dialogue, to assemble a cohesive musical whole out of hundreds of spare parts.
Now, back with a fourth album, the 39-year-old DJ finds himself in the position of elder (and occasionally grumpy) statesman.

The Detroit Mc headlined a massive bill that included Usher, Will.I.Am, N.E.R.D., Jane's Addiction, Chris Cornell, David Guetta, Deadmau5 and DJ Z-Trip.
Em's set kicked off with his first surprise of the night at the Staples Center, with Travis Barker jumping behind the drums for an acrobatic drum solo. As you have seen, we’ve been closely following the release of DJ Hero, the next step in rhythm gaming from Activision. Today is no exception as the company has now released the full 93 song set list for the game. While all club styled mixes, remixes and mashups, DJ Hero boasts one of the most varied collection of artists in any Hero franchise release.
With everything from the Jackson 5 to 2Pac, Daft Punk to Queen and everything in between, that variety of DJ Hero’s playlist is unmatched, as long as you like mashups and remixes. If you are a musical purist to the extreme, this game isn’t really what you’d be looking for.
