Slate is now supersizing the audio series by ordering two seasons at once. The company is preparing a seasons on the Briggs Initiative—the country’s first statewide referendum on gay rights as well as Fox News.
The idea is the two seasons will appeal to both long-term Slow Burn fans as well as new listeners who are interested in news and politics but are looking for a different way into the discussions as the country heads closer to a Presidential election.
Derek John, Executive Producer of Narrative Podcasts at Slate, told Deadline that these stories will appeal to both the “most politically-engaged” listeners as well as “those who have become disillusioned with day-to-day coverage”.

Back in 1984, director Rob Epstein along with narration writers Judith Coburn and Carter Wilson, worked together to bring us the acclaimed documentary film, The Times of Harvey Milk. We are continuing this Pride Month series of documentaries about queer issues. After last week's look at the life of Armistead Maupin, we detour into politics with Political Animals.
It’s just a matter of fact that men are the predominant voice of cinematic history. This is hardly surprising given that men are the predominant voice of history in general, but this of course means that the stories of women make up a frustratingly small portion of those told on the silver screen (even if we may curate our own viewing experiences to counteract this). The same can sadly be said about queer cinema where films about Lgbtiq women and by women (gay or otherwise) are without a doubt outnumbered by those by and about men.

Oscar-winning screenwriter and director Dustin Lance Black might not be your first thought to enter the Ya genre — but he’s certainly got experience in teaching people about love. The screenwriter of the gay rights biopic “Milk” is next tackling “The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight,” a bestselling novel from Jennifer E. Smith which he adapted and will direct. Though his protagonists are only 17, they have wisdom beyond their years for a Trump era audience, Black said. Cleve Jones has seen a lot. In the early 1970s he fought alongside gay-rights activist and politician Harvey Milk. In the 1980s, he turned to the AIDS crisis as the founder of both the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the iconic Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt. And now, he says, it’s time for another fight, one against President Donald Trump. That fight, Jones told TheWrap, has given a newfound urgency to ABC’s new mini-series, “When We Rise,” which premieres tonight and is largely based on Jones’ memoir of the same name. It chronicles five decades of the gay liberation movement.

After much speculation as to who would take on the responsibility of portraying the storied comedian, Film 360 announced Monday that Emile Hirsch, 28, has signed on to play John Belushi in director Steve Conrad’s still-untitled biopic.
The long-gestating biopic only recently regained traction when Conrad, who wrote The Pursuit of Happyness, The Weather Man, and Ben Stiller’s upcoming The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, signed on to both write and direct. The Hangover’s Todd Phillips was originally slated to direct. Reports surfaced last week that he’d held meetings with Hirsch and Workaholics lead Adam DeVine about taking on the role.

We wondered in Briefs how long it would take San Francisco 49er's cornerback Chris Culliver to issue a non-apology, and it was mere hours. Honestly, it's not a bad apology, until his media relations rep adds "Chris is very apologetic for any harm caused to anyone. His intent was not that at all. He is one who celebrates the differences of others. All of this was just a big mistake. It was interpreted wrong." Meanwhile, the 49er's have issued a statement condemning the remarks and saying they've spoken with Culliver.
Meanwhile, 49ers like Delaine Walker and Brian Jennings expressed support for former teammate Kwame Harris, who was arrested following an altercation with his ex-boyfriend, and they have no issue with him being gay. "That's him. If that's what he's into, that's what he's into. I can't judge a person for how he feels. Things happen. He was a great player.

Often times celebrities are given rolling eyes when they become invested in a political movement, but their collective star power can make a major impact. On March 3 at the Ebell of Los Angeles, The American Foundation for Equal Rights staged a one-night-only reading, verbatim theatre style, of a play that was written by Academy-award winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (Milk) and directed by Rob Reiner (The Bucket List). The play was based on the transcripts from the Perry vs. Schwarzeneggger trial, which Afer filed with the district court to overturn Proposition 8, the bill preventing gay and lesbian couples from marrying in California.
Brad Pitt (Moneyball) read as Judge Vaughn Walker, prosecuting attorneys Theodore B. Olson and David Boies were played by Martin Sheen (West Wing) and George Clooney (The Descendants) respectively and defense attorney Charles J. Cooper was played Kevin Bacon (X-Men: First Class). The case featured two couples, a...

It's an annual event as well as a browse that could suck up an entire weekend: Senses of Cinema's worldwide poll of… well, they're not all critics, so let's just call them friends of cinema. You'll want to scroll up and down the whole thing, but take a look, too, at the best of 2011 according to Notebook editor Daniel Kasman and contributors Celluloid Liberation Front, Christoph Huber, Olaf Möller and Dan Sallitt as well as a major presence here in the Forum and elsewhere, David Ehrenstein.
London. This is the year we'll be seeing the results of Sight & Sound's poll of more friends of cinema regarding the greatest films of all time. It happens only once every ten years and in the magazine's pages, Graham Fuller argues a mighty case for the return of Jean Vigo's L'Atalante (1934) to the top ten. The film's opening today for an extended run at BFI Southbank,...

Jane Lynch, Matthew Morrison, Rob Reiner, Martin Sheen, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Campbell Brown, Matt Bomer, Cleve Jones, Christine Lahti, Rory O'Malley, Yeardley Smith and George Takei also will star, the producers said Thursday. "8" is about the trial in a San Francisco federal court that overturned California's Proposition 8, which banned gays and lesbians from marrying. As part of Out's 26 Love Stories article, Neil Patrick Harris writes about his first meeting with David Burtka, and their decision to spend the rest of their lives together."We found a place in Harlem that a woman had been living in for 40-odd years, and it was roomy and reasonably priced. We went to L.A. and got this moving truck and collected his mattress and bed frame and some stuff we each had in storage, and we started a journey across the country. We stopped in Albuquerque, where my family is, and they gave us some stuff. And we went through Memphis and up to Michigan, where his family is, and picked up his parents’ piano. We went slowly across America, filling up this truck, and by the time we got to New York, we had a new life full of furniture." Happy Birthday to Alison Arngrim, who turns 50, and Jason Segel,...

Chicago – Does it say something about the current market of Blu-rays that nine of our top ten releases of the year (and, honestly, most of the runner-ups considered) are for catalog releases and special editions instead of films produced in the current era? More and more often, modern releases seem kind of lackluster. Throw on a featurette, maybe a deleted scene or two, and put it on the shelf.
More often, it is the anniversary editions, special release, and, of course, The Criterion Collection that lives up to the true potential of the format. Critics Matt Fagerholm and Brian Tallerico have assembled their ten best of 2011, all of which should be added to your collection as soon as possible. Or ask Santa if you think you’ve been good enough this year.
