I love you, you love me, let’s make a fringe Mattel movie…As the feature-length adaptation of the iconic toy Barbie awaits its big screen release, in the shadows waits Barney, with the upcoming movie now being described as a “surrealistic”, “A24-type” movie. And we have just bumped it to the top of our most anticipated movie list, now that we know Baby Bop gets decapitated after suffering from a walnut allergy.
The slated Barney movie, which is produced by Daniel Kaluuya, is looking to hit a key demographic — that is, those that know the purple dinosaur from their youth. According to Mattel Films vice president Kevin McKeon, speaking with The New Yorker, “We’re leaning into the millennial angst of the property rather than fine-tuning this for kids…It’s really a play for adults. Not that it’s R-rated, but it’ll focus on some of...

While Kevin Smith’s Netflix animated series Masters of the Universe: Revelation was envisioned as a follow-up to the 1980s show He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, it also included some nods to the 1987 live-action Masters of the Universe film, including the presence of flying discs, the characters of Pigboy and Blade, and even a line of dialogue that was lifted from the movie. So now that Smith and Netflix are moving forward with the sequel series Masters of the Universe: Revolution, it seems fitting that a cast member from the 1987 film has joined the voice cast. Coming Soon reports that Meg Foster, who played Evil-Lyn on screen in ’87, will be providing the voice of Motherboard, “who is described as “”an ancient sorceress of technology in the fight for the soul of Eternia.”

Mattel has shared the first look at its reimagined take on the much-loved childhood character Barney the Dinosaur, and fans are iffy about it.
On Monday (13 February), the famous American toy brand announced that it was relaunching the iconic franchise in an effort that will span television, film, YouTube content, music and a full range of children’s products.
“Mattel will relaunch Barney to a new generation with a brand-new animated series, set to debut globally in 2024,” the company wrote in a press release.
Following the news, many original Barney fans took to Twitter, reacting in horror at the purple dinosaur’s refreshed look: a wider grin with an added space between his front teeth, big green eyes and eye ridges that arguably give him a more realistic dinosaur face.
One user decried the transformation, writing: “I don’t like the new face. What happened to if it ain’t broke,...

The Og series, which bowed on PBS in 1992 and ran for nearly two decades, featured a human actor in a dinosaur costume.

In this age of reboots, perhaps it was inevitable: A beloved (by its target audience) and also reviled (by a sizable group outside the core demo) character getting a new look and relaunch.
All of which is to say, Barney is coming back.
Mattel announced Monday that it’s relaunching the franchise built around the purple dinosaur. The relaunch will include a preschool animated series set to debut in 2024 — Barney will no longer be portrayed by a human in a T. rex costume — and a range of consumer products aimed at the under-6 set. The relaunch will also cover possible films and YouTube content. “Apparel and accessories for adult fans, featuring classic Barney, are also in development,” Mattel notes.
The updated Barney brand builds on the long-running Barney & Friends, which debuted nationally on PBS in 1992 and ran for 18 years, with repeats continuing for several years beyond that. The show...
