Jason Sarlanis knows that for some people, the Investigation Discovery network has stood for one thing: murder mysteries, frequently gruesome in nature and usually told in self-contained hourlong episodes. But with the success of docuseries “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV,” that perception is quickly changing.
“It has been a fundamental shift for us,” says Sarlanis, who is president of TNT, TBS, TruTV and Hln in addition to ID. “It has brought a spotlight back to all the other things that are outside of the lane of what people expect an ID show to be.”
Those include recent limited series like “The Curious Case of Natalia Grace” and “Jared From Subway: Catching a Monster,” as well as partnerships with producers Octavia Spencer (whose output for the network includes docuseries “Lost Women of Highway 20” and “Feds”) and Michael Bay.

Michael Douglas is in terrific form as Benjamin Franklin in Apple TV’s new historical limited series “Franklin” but he isn’t the only actor to emerge with awards whispers whizzing through the air. Veteran actor Eddie Marsan features in a key supporting role as John Adams and delivers one of the finest performances of his career while also shining a new light onto a man that many actors have depicted before.
The limited series follows Franklin’s eight years in France as he tried to persuade King Louis XVI (Tom Pezier) to join the colonies’ cause and aid them in the American Revolutionary War. The scenes between Douglas and Marsan are nothing short of spectacular and Marsan nails his performance as Adams, as noted by critics.
Clint Worthington (Roger Ebert) noted: “Marsan’s energy as Adams is decidedly different from Paul Giamatti’s in Ellis’ original 2008 miniseries—“Franklin” feels...

Richard Leibner, a celebrated talent agent who represented some of the best-known anchors in TV news, first at a firm he helped build and then for UTA, died Tuesday after a battle with cancer. He was 85 years old.
In his time, Leibner served as an agent and adviser to Dan Rather, Mike Wallace, Ed Bradley, Morley Safer, Bob Simon, Steve Kroft, Bill Whitaker, Diane Sawyer, Chuck Scarborough, Paula Zahn, Brian Stelter and Fareed Zakaria, among others. He was a passionate advocate for clients, and was never been shy about delivering his opinion of the latest goings-on in the ever-churning news sector.
Leibner firmly believed that top news anchors should be treated akin to Hollywood royalty. “Decades ago, he made it his personal mission to see that big name news stars should be treated and compensated like traditional movie and television stars,” said Jay Sures, UTA’s vice-chairman, in a memo to staffers Tuesday.

After Disney acquired Lucasfilm, one of their biggest creative decisions regarding the "Star Wars" franchise was to completely disregard the entirety of the Expanded Universe, opting to turn all the novels, comics, video games, and other assorted media surrounding the "Star Wars" movies into what is now known as Legends and removing them from the overall canon of the galaxy far, far away.
However, since then, several "Star Wars" projects have brought some of the Expanded Universe content back under the canon umbrella, such as the villainous, master strategist Grand Admiral Thrawn. The character originated in the "Heir to the Empire" trilogy of novels by author Timothy Zahn, which is largely considered to be among the best "Star Wars" books ever written.
But just because that story was relegated to Legends doesn't mean Lucasfilm is ignoring it. Not only is a version of this storyline slowly coming to fruition in...

A darkly comic crime odyssey set in middle-of-nowhere America, writer-director Shane Atkinson’s Laroy, Texas wears its Coen brothers influence on its sleeve. And while it never quite reaches the hilarious heights or existential depths of the Coens’ finest work, it does offer similarly enjoyable mixture of the macabre and the absurd.
Atkinson’s film begins with a regular schmuck named Ray (John Magaro) being summoned to a greasy diner and handed an envelope full of photos that show his wife, Stacy-Lynn (Megan Stevenson), cheating on him. It’s devastating information to receive, and it doesn’t help that Ray is hearing it from a guy like Skip (Steve Zahn)—a self-styled private eye who dresses in a bolo tie and cowboy hat, and swears that he’s as much of a detective as any of the other boys on the force, even if he has spelled the word incorrectly on his business cards.

It’s an interesting month on HBO and Max this March, as two acclaimed films hit the streamer along with some intriguing original programming.
First up in the movies arena is the streaming debut of Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet. From beloved Paddington director Paul King, the film follows the adventures of a young Willy Wonka as he looks to become the world’s best (and weirdest) chocolatier. Later in March on Max, there’s also Dream Scenario, a highly-regarded comedy boasting Nicolas Cage as Paul Matthews, who suddenly starts appearing in people’s dreams for unknown reasons, and who naturally becomes very famous as a result of this strange phenomena.
Series-wise, the biggest show on Max this month is The Regime. It packs a solid cast, including Kate Winslet, Matthias Schoenaerts, Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton, and Hugh Grant, and tells the story of “life within the walls of a modern...

Showtime has been hit with a lawsuit over “George & Tammy” by the estate of country star Tammy Wynette’s fifth and last husband, George Richey. His heirs contend that the critically acclaimed miniseries disparaged Richey as the “villain” of the tortured love story between Wynette and George Jones, in violation of a previous non-disparagement agreement with Georgette Jones, the daughter of the titular couple and a key participant in the series.
Georgette Jones is not named as a defendant; only Showtime is. But because she was a consulting producer on the miniseries, as well as being the writer of the memoir that was the basis for the script, the lawsuit claims that the 2022 release of “George & Tammy” represented the network’s “tortious interference” in a 2015 settlement agreement the estate had made with Jones not to defame or disparage Richey, played by Steve Zahn in the series

While Luke the mighty Jedi, Han the rogueish smuggler, and Leia the badass princess get all the attention, Chewbacca has long been the unsung hero of the "Star Wars" universe. Easily mistaken for a furry mascot, Chewbacca is the best friend you can ask for, the best co-pilot, and also one of the strongest fighters in the franchise.
Unfortunately, most of Chewbacca's lore has been told outside of the movies, like the best-forgotten "Star Wars Holiday Special" introducing Chewbacca's family and their holiday traditions, or the Expanded Universe books introducing the idea of Chewie owing Han a life debt. This means that a lot of people know rather little about him or the Wookiees.
Like so many elements of the galaxy far, far away, Chewbacca's life and general Wookiee culture only come into the picture and become important if and when a particular author decides it is important. That's the...

When "Star Wars" came out in 1977 and there were associated toys and novels, there wasn't really a vocabulary for anything beyond what was seen in the movies. That's why you had toys named Hammerhead and Snaggletooth. It persisted through "Return of the Jedi" more than half a decade later, giving you toys like Prune Face and Yak Face. No one really seemed to care. Kids just wanted to play with their "Star Wars" toys and the comics and books carried on, making up whatever names they wanted or skipped naming things altogether.
So how did "Star Wars" get its vocabulary? Why do we know that Hammerheads are really called Ithorians and that Snaggletooth is really a Snivvian named Zutton? You know what a Twi'lek is, right? And you know that the Imperial Center is Coruscant?
Well, the reason is simple: The 1987 "Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game" from West End Games.

This article contains spoilers for "Ahosoka" episode 7, "Dreams and Madness."
With the show's seventh episode in the books, "Ahoska" season 1 (assuming it isn't just a one-and-done) is rapidly approaching its conclusion. Not only do we have all of the major pieces on the board following the arrival of Grand Admiral Thrawn and Ezra Bridger last week, but the pieces have started to come together as Ahsoka Tano finally made it to the distant galaxy that both her friend and enemy had been stranded in for more than a decade. But this episode also lightly touched on a part of Thrawn's past involving one of the most notorious characters in all of "Star Wars" history: Darth Vader.

This article contains spoilers for "Ahsoka" episode 6, "Far, Far Away."
It took roughly five and a half episodes, but "Ahoska" finally delivered on one of its biggest promises with its sixth episode, "Far, Far Away." Ever since the first trailer debuted, it's been explicitly clear that Grand Admiral Thrawn was going to be a big part of the show's proceedings. At long last, the Imperial mastermind made his live-action debut after Morgan Elsbeth, Baylan Skoll, Shin Hati, and Sabine Wren completed the trek to a galaxy far, far away, where Thrawn has spent the last decade and change in exile. The moment was pretty epic and that felt rather appropriate, as this was a "Star Wars" moment more than 30 years in the making.
Thrawn, up until the premiere of this episode, was easily one of the most beloved characters in all of "Star Wars" that had never appeared in live-action.

This Star Wars: Ahsoka article contains spoilers.
Three episodes into Ahsoka and the stage is set for an epic showdown millions of lightyears away from the known galaxy. Lady Morgan Elsbeth is building the Eye of Sion, a massive hyperspace ring unlike anything we’ve seen in live action before, so that she and her band of dark siders can travel through the Pathway to Peridia to find Grand Admiral Thrawn. It’s the first time we’ve heard of Peridia, even if former Jedi Baylan Skoll has heard the Jedi fairytales, but the existence of another galaxy beyond the one where the rest of the saga is set has huge implications for the future of Star Wars.

In Timothy Zahn's "Heir to the Empire" trilogy, a legendary "Star Wars" character was birthed. Zahn's work reinvigorated the franchise's Extended Universe (EU) by introducing antagonists that were not Sith but motivated by ambitions that did not align completely with that of the Empire. The big bad in Zahn's work was a tactical genius who cared about his men for pragmatic reasons and emerged as someone dangerous without wielding special sabers or Force-sensitive abilities. We're talking about Grand Admiral Thrawn, the blue-skinned Chiss officer who took it upon himself to dismantle the freshly-built New Republic that was still finding its footing.
The key to understanding Thrawn is Zahn's "Thrawn Ascendancy" trilogy, which serves as a prequel to "Star Wars Rebels" and takes place sometime after the events of "Attack of the Clones." The trilogy introduces the Chiss Ascendancy, a relatively-unknown oligarchic autocracy hidden deep within the galaxy, whose...

Season 3 of "The Righteous Gemstones" isn't over quite yet, but HBO has already seen the light when it comes to the comedy series about a dysfunctional evangelical empire: The show has just been renewed for a fourth season. This shouldn't come as a huge surprise since the Danny McBride-created show is a raucous crowd-pleaser whose most recent season earned a 100% Rotten Tomatoes critics' score, but it's still exciting news for fans of the show. McBride's previous comedy series, "Vice Principals," was canceled after just two seasons, so it's great that HBO is letting "The Righteous Gemstones" spread its (very silly and stupid) word for at least one more season.
"The Righteous Gemstones" has actually hit higher viewership metrics in season 3 than in either of its earlier seasons, according to a press release from the network. Recent episodes are averaging 4.9 million viewers, making it McBride's most-watched show. For reference, "Succession,...

“Star Wars” is headed to some very Timothy Zahn-inspired places. And some very Dave Filoni places as well. The new trailer for “Star Wars: Ahsoka” just dropped and it’s a feast of storytelling possibilities. It can’t arrive a moment too soon after that disappointing “Mandalorian” Season 3. Watch the trailer below.
What comes across is that this is absolutely a live-action continuation of “Star Wars: Rebels,” the four-season Disney Xd series that was arguably the first and most artistically successful “Star Wars” storytelling to unfold after Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm. What comes across is that this is absolutely a live-action continuation of “Star Wars: Rebels,” the four-season Disney Xd series that was arguably the first and most artistically successful “Star Wars” storytelling to unfold after Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm. The series debuted in the fall of 2014 and wrapped up in early 2018. It told the story of the crew of the Ghost, who go on missions in support of the very early stages of the Rebellion against the Empire. During a recent Gold Derby video interview, senior editor Matt Noble spoke in-depth with Devery Jacobs (“Reservation Dogs”) about Season 2 of her FX comedy series, which is eligible at the 2023 Emmys. Watch the full video above and read the complete interview transcript below.
Besides playing the character of Elora Danan Postoak, who leaves the reservation to fulfill her gang leader’s dream of living in California, Jacobs also joined the writers’ room this year. “It’s monumental. It’s everything,” the actress admitted in our webchat. “Without writers, we have no stories, we have no film, we have no television. I just am grateful to be one of the indigenous storytellers in this industry.”
Also in our exclusive video interview, Jacobs talked about her “favorite thing” from the second season, her big takeaways from the “Mabel” episode that she co-wrote with Sterlin Harjo, how the show handles grief, and what...

Shane Atkinson’s debut sets itself in the ever-so-small town of Laroy. Ray (John Magaro) is a man living the simple life, married to the local beauty-pageant queen and working at his family’s hardware store alongside his brother, Junior (Matthew Del Negro). He’s not unhappy, but not quite happy either. His existence depends on raising enough money for his wife Stacy-Lynn (Megan Stevenson) to open a salon. Her happiness results in his own happiness. Unfortunately, she’s not happy––at least not with Ray.
An unabashed quasi-homage to the Coen brothers, Laroy concerns a case of mistaken identity. Ray happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, and so when he’s assumed to be a hitman he obliges. As the confusion and dead bodies begin stacking up, Ray and his friend-turned-private eye Skip (Steve Zahn) must solve the plethora of crimes that lay in their wake.

For better or worse, Palpatine is the big bad of the entire "Star Wars" saga as we know it, and even if you look at it more closely rather than look at the macro story, it's always Force-users who are the villains. We have Vader in the original trilogy, Maul, Dooku, and Palpatine in the prequels, and Kylo Ren and Snoke in the sequel trilogy. Even "Star Wars Rebels" had big force-sensitive villains like the Inquisitors, Vader, and Maul.
Other than "Andor" and its rather despicable human villains, every bad guy we've faced use the Force. That is, until now, because "Heir to the Empire" is coming, and with it, one of the biggest "Star Wars" villains ever: Thrawn. After having a big role in "Rebels," and after teases all throughout "Mandalorian," the trailer for "Ahsoka" finally showed us the Chiss Grand Admiral in the flesh. Steve Zahn is one of Hollywood’s most notable actors. Over the course of his career, he has tackled varied roles from quirky sidekicks and bad guys to playing dads with existential crises and good guys. His latest role as the beloved Mark Mossbacher in The White Lotus has reintroduced him to global audiences and put him into the spotlight again. It is laudable that Zahn is finally getting his moment in the spotlight. He is an undoubtedly talented actor, comedian, and true Hollywood veteran, but there’s so much more to him than his eccentric roles and funny side. Here are eight...

A whole lot happened during Star Wars Celebration, so much so that it was genuinely difficult to keep up with. But one of the biggest of big things came in the form of the "Ahsoka" trailer, which will give the beloved character a solo series for the first time ever. This has certainly been a long time coming. Based on what we see in the trailer, it certainly seems like the show will be setting the stage for something much, much larger. Namely, an adaptation of "Heir to the Empire," author Timothy Zahn's trilogy of novels from the '90s where Grand Admiral Thrawn was born. Not to speculate too hard here, but it seems likely this is where Dave Filoni's announced "Star Wars" movie is headed.

As the upcoming "Ahsoka" live-action series hovers on the horizon, the recent Star Wars Celebration announcement of Lars Mikkelsen taking up the blue make-up to reprise his legendary animated voice role in the full-bodied flesh sent waves of excitement through Star Wars fans. A main baddie for the final half of the "Star Wars Rebels" animated series created by Dave Filoni (showrunning again for "Ahsoka"), the ice-blue Chiss Admiral proved to be a formidable and terrifying threat to the Ghost crew. Mitth'raw'nuruodo's (Thrawn's Chiss name) epic (re)entrance into the public consciousness provided fond memories for Celebration attendees back in 2016, especially for the generation who grew up with the Legends novels that started with Timothy Zahn's 1991 "Heir to the Empire." That book kicked off an enduring Legends reign for Thrawn as an intelligent Imperial tactician who had no nonsense for Imperial stupidity.

Star Wars fans will see a familiar blue-skinned, red-eyed face join Rosario Dawson in the upcoming Disney+ series Ahsoka. Lars Mikkelsen (House of Cards) will star as Grand Admiral Thrawn, the same role he voiced in the Disney Xd series Star Wars Rebels. Lucasfilm announced the casting on Friday, April 7, at its Star Wars Celebration in London, with Mikkelsen appearing in person at the convention, per Variety. In Star Wars novels written by Timothy Zahn, Thrawn is a ruthless leader who gathers Imperial forces in an effort to destroy the New Republic after the events of the 1983 film Return of the Jedi. The character first appeared on screen in 2016, in Star Wars Rebels’ third season, and since then, Zahn has written and released two more book trilogies centered on the grand admiral. Dawson’s Ahsoka mentioned Thrawn in her appearance on the Disney+ series The Mandalorian. And now Thrawn will...

The animated corner of the Star Wars Universe created by Dave Filoni is being transferred into live action with the Lucasfilm Disney+ series Ahsoka.
That was the point hammered home at the Ahsoka panel held Saturday at Star Wars Celebration, which climaxed with the reveal that Lars Mikkelsen, the Danish actor who voiced the popular villain Grand Admiral Thrawn from Filoni’s 2014 series, Star Wars: Rebels, would be reprising the role for the new series.
Ahsoka is the Star Wars series debuting in August and stars Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano, the protégé of Anakin Skywalker who has turned her back on the ways of the Jedi. One of the show’s through lines is her search for Thrawn.
Lars Mikkelsen will return as Thrawn in Ahsoka
The reveal happened both during the playing of a Celebration-only Ahsoka trailer, which showed the blue-skinned, red-eyed Imperial commander, and then the stage entrance of Mikkelsen.

Grand Admiral Thrawn is finally flesh and bone.
Lars Mikkelsen is set to play the longstanding “Star Wars” villain on the upcoming Disney+ series “Ahsoka,” Lucasfilm announced on Saturday as part of the Star Wars Celebration fan convention in London. Mikkelsen — brother of actor Mads Mikkelsen — also joined the cast of “Ahsoka” onstage at the end of the panel, saying that “it’s wonderful” to be cast in the live-action role.
Thrawn was originally created by author Timothy Zahn as part of a series of Star Wars novels released in the 1990s that covered the events following 1983’s “Return of the Jedi.” In those books, Thrawn was a cunning and ruthless Grand Admiral in the Empire who takes control of what’s left of the Imperial fleet and mounts a counter-offensive to take down the New Republic.

Star Wars Celebration is underway in the U.K. and Lucasfilm kicked things off with a panel that showcased the future of "Star Wars," both on the big and small screen. It turns out, these worlds are going to intersect, as Dave Filoni is directing a new movie that will bring together all of the Disney+ shows like "The Mandalorian" and the upcoming "Ahsoka." And, speaking of Ahsoka Tano, a trailer for her solo series dropped a big hint in regards to where this is all headed: an adaptation of a classic storyline that is worth getting excited about.
In the trailer, Rosario Dawson's Ahsoka Tano says "something's coming, something dark. I sense it." For the first time ever, brief though it may be, we get a glimpse at Grand Admiral Thrawn in live-action (even if it's just the back of his head). Building on that, Ahsoka also says to Sabine,...

Paula Zahn isn’t known for her colorful analysis of America’s great films. And yet, on Monday night, she will appear on TCM with critic Eddie Muller, ready to hash over a series of noir delights such as “In Cold Blood” and “I Want To Live.”
Zahn may best be remembered for stints on CNN, CBS News and Fox News Channel and, more recently, a substantial decade-plus tenure on Investigation Discovery analyzing true crime stories. In a different era, she and Muller might not have occasion to meet.
In the current epoch, however, their fates are intertwined. Both personalities work for Warner Bros. Discovery, the media giant that has been forged out of TV portfolios previously owned by AT&T, Time Warner, Discovery Communications and Scripps Networks. Executives think TCM, a cable network with a rabid fanbase devoted to classic films, may just represent a sort of linchpin that helps...

The "Star Wars" galaxy encompasses a vast array of planets and diverse creatures that continue to be explored in even greater detail in the saga films, every live-action, animated Disney+ series, and extensive reference volumes, comics, and tie-in novels. The cultural ripple effect spread worldwide, inspiring countless parodies and bizarre knock-offs that looked to capitalize off the colossal record success of the original trilogy.
In the late '80s, "Star Wars" was at a crossroads in terms of new content and continued efforts to endlessly merchandise the sci-fi fantasy epic into oblivion. It was a ripe time for a proper parody, and luckily one of the great satirists of the 20th century had enough clout and enough jokes to get it done. When Mel Brooks came out with "Spaceballs" in 1987, it had been four years since "Return of the Jedi" ended the original trilogy and three years since the made-for-tv...

The opening credits of HBO’s Emmy-winning The White Lotus are immediately memorable: lush and colorful wallpaper-like depictions of monkeys, birds, fruit, and other tropical images that immediately convey a sense of decadence, set to a soundtrack of animal sounds, discordant flutes, and steadily escalating percussion. But the longer you watch them, the more it becomes apparent that they’re also deceptively sinister, with rotting fruit, dying fish, and blood splattered amongst the tropical imagery, in much the same way that the series’ high-end setting initially obscures the corrosive aspects of high-end tourism and its pointed skewering of the wealthy and privileged elite.

A version of this story about the cast of “The White Lotus” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
HBO’s limited series “The White Lotus” might just have been the buzziest show of last year, in no small part thanks to its gifted cast. The Television Academy clearly agreed, with 20 Emmy nominations overall for the series, eight of which recognized actors on the show created by Mike White. Season 1 of the anthology series focused on the guests and employees of a luxurious Hawaiian resort, part of a global chain called White Lotus. It drew stark relief between the lives and problems of those wealthy enough to enjoy the resort and those who serve them, a cutting and clever look into income inequality, colonialism and many of the issues that arise in its wake.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you haven’t watched “HózhóoNaasháa,” the Season 1 finale of “Dark Winds,” streaming now on AMC+.
After a slow boil first season, “Dark Winds” ends with a bang — quite literally. The finale wraps up the case of the armored truck robbery that underlaid the six episode first season of AMC’s neo-noir series, which took its plot from Tony Hillerman’s 1978 novel “Listening Woman.” The episode ends with Navajo police officers Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) and Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) in a tense stand-off in a cave where the two robbers were hiding their money and their hostages. And after plenty of twists and turns — including the revelation that Joe’s FBI ally Witover (Noah Emmerich) was actually allied with the robbers the entire time — the stand-off concludes with Jim and Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten) setting off explosives to bury the money and the bodies in the cave.
