CBS has given full season orders to its three freshman dramas — “East New York,” “So Help Me Todd,” and “Fire Country.”
“CBS is off to a tremendous start this season, said Kelly Kahl, president of CBS Entertainment. “We are thrilled to have the three most watched new series, each with their own unique settings, characters and storylines. These dramas are elevating our already successful lineup, resonating with diverse audiences both on-air and on streaming, and continuing to grow each week.”
“We thank the talented casts, executive producers and their incredible writing and production teams for bringing these shows to life,” Kahl added. “Additional kudos to our CBS programming teams for shepherding these series to success. We are delighted to give them well deserved full season orders.”
According to Nielsen’s Live+7 data as of Oct. 16, “Fire Country” is averaging 8.3 million viewers per episode, while “East New York” is at 7.4 million per episode.

CBS is wasting little time in locking down its trio of first-year scripted shows.
The network has extended the orders for East New York, Fire Country and So Help Me Todd after promising starts for all three. CBS is calling the extensions “full season orders,” though it hasn’t set episode counts for the trio. In the era of shorter season orders, a full run can mean anything from 15 or 16 episodes to the once-standard 22.
The pickups for the three shows come as little surprise, as Fire Country, East New York and So Help Me Todd are the three most watched rookie network shows of the 2022-23 season so far. The Jerry Bruckheimer-produced Fire Country drew 8.26 million viewers over seven days for its series debut. One of CBS’ hot new prospects for the fall — the CBS Studios/Bruckheimer Television drama “Fire Country” — got off to a solid start in its linear debut Friday. The show also helped boost CBS’ live streaming numbers compared to the comparable fall Friday premiere night in 2021.
“Fire Country,” an action-drama revolving around California firefighters, opened to 5.74 million viewers in the 9 p.m. hour, according to Nielsen. The series built on its “S.W.A.T.” lead-in by a significant margin, as the sixth season premiere of the police drama brought in 4.6 million viewers at 8 p.m.
CBS capped the night with “Blue Bloods” grabbing 6.1 million viewers with its 13th season premiere at 10 p.m. CBS easily took Friday bragging rights in linear total viewers with an average of 5.5 million.
On live streaming platforms, “S.W.A.T” was up 4 in streams across Paramount+ and on CBS’ authenticated streaming partners, according to stats provided by CBS. “Fire Country...

Ever since it was announced that Max Thieriot would be headlining the new CBS drama Fire Country, there has been a question mark surrounding his future on Seal Team.
At the time of the latter's sixth season pickup, Thieriot had not closed a deal to return.
As a result, the Seal Team Season 5 finale left his character's future up in the air.
Thankfully, Thieriot closed a deal to return to the Paramount+ drama and has revealed that he is juggling the two shows pretty well.
“It’s obviously a juggle, but thankfully, we started Seal Team season six before we started shooting episode two of Fire Country, so I was able to work it right into the gap in between,” Thieriot said at TCA Friday.
“It’s been crazy, but life’s crazy. I got a couple of kids to throw in there and moving around up to Vancouver to shoot a TV show.

The network upfronts are once again front-and-center for the television industry as major players gather in New York May 16-19 for the springtime ritual of presenting programming plans for the upcoming TV season.
The business has changed markedly in the three years since industry insiders last gathered in person at Radio City Music Hall, Carnegie Hall and the like. The pandemic accelerated television’s embrace of on-demand streaming platforms and direct-to-consumer distribution models.
But broadcast TV still has its sway — just look at the list of top performing series on the largest SVOD platforms.
As content chiefs outline their plans for the 2022-2023 television season, here is a running list of new drama and comedy series orders handed out by ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and the CW. This post will be updated throughout upfront week.

CBS is changing focus.
After brutally slaying a good portion of their comedy lineup and Magnum Pi, the network announced three drama pickups.
They've picked up none of the comedies they had under consideration.
The best news of the day by a long margin is that CBS formally picked up Fire Country (formerly known as Cal Fire) from CBS Studios.
This series has been exciting our readers since it was first announced, and we couldn't agree more. This one comes from Seal Team's Max Thieriot, who co-wrote the story and serves as an executive producer.
It's co-written by executive producers Tony Phelan & Joan Rater. Other EPs include James Strong (pilot only), David Grae, Jerry Bruckheimer, Jonathan Littman, and KristieAnne Reed (Jerry Bruckheimer Television)

CBS has ordered three new drama shows for the 2022-2023 broadcast season. According to sources, the network has decided not to move forward with any of its four comedy pilots.
The network has picked up the police drama “East New York,” the firefighter drama “Fire Country” (formerly known as “Cal Fire”), and legal drama “So Help Me Todd.” The comedies “Rust Belt News,” “Unplanned in Akron,” “Sober Companion,” and “The Hug Machine” have been passed over.
“East New York” follows Regina Haywood (Amanda Warren), the newly promoted deputy inspector of East New York, a working-class neighborhood at the edge of Brooklyn. She leads a diverse group of officers and detectives, some of whom are reluctant to deploy her creative methods of serving and protecting in the midst of social upheaval and the early seeds of gentrification.
The cast also includes Kevin Rankin, Jimmy Smits, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Richard Kind, Elizabeth Rodriguez,...

CBS has given series orders to three of its five drama pilots, Max Thieriot’s Fire Country (fka Cal Fire); East New York, headlined by Amanda Warren and Jimmy Smits; and So Help Me Todd (fka Untitled Mother & Son Legal Drama), starring Marcia Gay Harden and Skylar Astin. CBS is not commenting beyond that, but I hear all three series are for fall.
True Lies, ordered as an off-cycle pilot, also had been rumored for a series order, likely for midseason. I hear negotiations between CBS and 20th Television continue, and the project is still very much alive.
Not going forward are CBS’ remaining drama pilot, Early Edition, a reimagining of the Kyle Chandler series which had been cooling off, as well as all of CBS’ comedy pilots/presentations. The network this year opted for all presentation orders to comedy projects to its own studio, CBS Studios, while the one comedy from an outside studio, Warner Bros. TV’s Rust Bell News, was a full pilot.
New Series On Broadcast Networks In 2022-23: Photo Gallery
I hear CBS brass were very happy with their crop of drama pilots this season, considered to be one of the strongest in years, while the group of comedy pilots did not produce any standouts.
With CBS also canceling three current comedy series — United States of Al, B Positive and How We Roll — the network will have the fewest half-hour series on the schedule in awhile. CBS five years ago trimmed down its two-hour Monday comedy block to one hour, more recently consisting of The Neighborhood and Bob Hearts Abishola. CBS may now do the same with the Thursday two-hour block.
I hear So Help Me Todd, which has comedic overtones, may join the lineup behind the 8 Pm comedy block, anchored by flagship Young Sheldon and possibly featuring breakout hit Ghosts.
2022 CBS Pilots & Series Orders
So Help Me Todd has been one of the Cinderella stories of the 2022 broadcast season. Taking a big blow early on when the female lead was recast, with Marcia Gay Harden replacing Geena Davis opposite Skylar Astin, the pilot hung in there in the middle of the pack and had a big finish with strong testing results, I hear.
Here are details about CBS’ newly picked up scripted series:

EPs: Christine Holder, Mark Holder (Wonder Street)

When Madam Secretary returns for its abbreviated sixth and final season on CBS, it will be without Sara Ramirez, who will not be returning as a series regular, Deadline has confirmed. Ramirez, who plays political strategist Kat Sandoval, may return for a guest appearance, according to TVLine, which first reported the casting news. Ramirez has been with the political drama series since season four.
Ramirez joined the series following the sudden departure of Bebe Neuwirth who played Nadine Tolliver. Ramirez’s Kat Sandoval is legendary in D.C. for her talent and for abruptly dropping out of politics until Elizabeth (Téa Leoni) managed to coax her back into the State Department.

Madam Secretary will end with its forthcoming sixth season. CBS revealed Wednesday that it will finish the Téa Leoni-fronted show with a 10-episode order this year.
Created by Barbara Hall, Madam Secretary stars Leoni as Elizabeth McCord, the shrewd, determined U.S. Secretary of State who drives international diplomacy and circumvents protocol as she negotiates global and domestic issues, both at the White House and at home.
CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl revealed the news at the network’s upfronts press breakfast. “They’re going to do 10 episodes in the fall and tie up the storyline. We’re happy and excited to do that for Téa, the cast and the audience. It’s hard when a show ‘poof goes away.’ We like to be able to do this and send the show off with a great deal of respect and celebration. Everyone appreciates when we are able to do that.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Family Separation Part 1,” the fifth midseason finale of “Madam Secretary.”
There are few shows on television that tackle sensitive topics such as nuclear power, climate change, or the 25th amendment with vigor in each episode, let alone one that also often opts for the most dramatic — but positive — outcome for its characters.
So taking on the ripped-from-the-headlines issue of family separation at U.S.-Mexico border was only a natural fit for the 100th episode of “Madam Secretary.” On Sunday night’s “Family Separation Part 1,” Elizabeth (Tea Leoni) and Henry (Tim Daly) plotted their vow renewals, while at the border a new senate policy of arresting those seeking asylum and separating them from their children came to light.
Although Elizabeth reached deep into her contact list to try and rectify the situation, by the end of the episode tensions...

ABC has given a put pilot commitment to Blank, a medical drama from writer Trey Callaway (Revolution), director Dave Semel, Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and producer Glenn Geller.
This marks the latest big broadcast commitment for Kapital, which scaled back on broadcast development with more targeted approach this season as it has been expanding into premium cable and streaming. The company has a total of four put put commitments, for dramas Wolfe and Blank at ABC, comedies Generation Gap and The Squeeze at CBS; as well as a series commitment for comedy Carol’s Second Act, starring Patricia Heaton, also at CBS.
Written by Callaway and to be directed by Semel, Blank is a one-hour medical procedural about a successful but egotistical surgeon who suffers a traumatic brain injury that changes his personality and erases his memory, but leaves his surgical skills fully intact. From a**hole to good soul,...

What a way to kick things off.
As if having not one, not two, but three former Secretaries of State on Madam Secretary Season 5 Episode 1 wasn't enough, the cast and writers delivered a hell of a story.
The part about pulling off nuclear disarmament on the Indian subcontinent was impressive, and Timeless alum Sakina Jeffrey shone, but that's not what I'm talking about here.
The crisis du jour was the least interesting and least important part of "E Pluribus Unum." What resonated was the argument against nationalism, the argument for unity.
Watching Elizabeth's closing speech was damn near like watching Martin Sheen deliver a monologue on The West Wing during the Sorkin years. It almost made you wonder if he'd been hired as a ghostwriter.

Miss last night’s episode? Here’s what you need to know about Castle’s’ “Murder, He Wrote”
Airdate: 10/15/12 Writer: David Grae Director: Rob Bowman Synopsis: Castle and Beckett’s attempt to escape to the Hamptons for a romantic getaway far from the prying eyes of the precinct are stymied when a dying man stumbles into Castle’s beautiful backyard. What followed was an impromptu murder investigation that would make Revenge’s Emily Thorne proud as the show’s dynamic duo teamed up with a small town’s well-intentioned, albeit inexperience sheriff to find the killer. Meanwhile in Manhattan, Ryan and Esposito spent their energy trying to uncover the identity of the mystery man that Beckett is dating! Introduced: Castle’s much-talked about Hampton hideaway. Said Castle to an understandably questioning Beckett, “I’m not going to deny that I have brought other women up here. But, none of them were you.
