The Nineties rock-inspired track features on Parks’ most recent LP My Soft Machine, one of Rolling Stone’s 100 Best Albums of 2023.

On first listen, the second album from London singer-songwriter Arlo Parks sounds like something to luxuriate in; Parks sings and lays down poetry over plush textures and simmering beats. But a closer listen reveals that these pillowy structures are, in fact, cushions against the blows of modern life—bulwarks that keep Parks’ self, the “soft machine” referenced in the album title, moving without cutting herself off or suffering too much long-term damage.

Arlo Parks has released the new single “Pegasus,” a collaboration with Phoebe Bridgers. It’s the fourth track to come off the London singer-songwriter’s upcoming sophomore album My Soft Machine.
On “Pegasus,” Parks and Bridgers cooly harmonize during the chorus, with Parks delicately declaring statements of love and joy during the verses. Its hazy, ethereal nature fits the desert setting of its accompanying music video, which in itself was inspired by films like Gerry, My Own Private Idaho, and Paris, Texas.
“‘Pegasus’ is about experiencing the warmth and lightness of good love for the first time,” Parks shared in a press release. “It also explores how the absence of chaos and the presence of real connection can be a little bit terrifying after a long time of not having it.” Listen to the song below.

Arlo Parks has previewed her upcoming album, My Soft Machine, with the groovy new song “Blades.” Listen to the single below.
As Parks shared in a statement, “I wanted to make something that I can dance to, finally, because I feel like my songs don’t really have that quality in general. So, I took inspiration from bands like Esg, artists like Kaytranada, and a lot of the kind of 70s Zambian psychedelic rock that I love.”
“Blades” does the artist’s desires justice. Chilled out but melodic, the single combines slinky guitar, syncopated synths, and a singalong chorus, inspiring you to dance — even if Parks is singing about a fractured friendship.
“I imagine this moment at a party where you see someone across the room that you haven’t seen in a while, you felt yourself growing apart, and you’re like, should I, should I not?” Parks said.

In the past few years, the Grammy for Best Alternative Album has been a highly contested award. With recent nominees and winners including critically beloved masterpieces like Fiona Apple’s “Fetch the Bolt Cutters,” Phoebe Bridgers’s “Punisher,” Wet Leg’s self-titled album, and Japanese Breakfast’s “Jubilee,” it’s no wonder that the caliber of the nominees is expected to be pretty high, especially since alternative music tends to enjoy better critical reception than most genres these days. This year the race already seems to be quite competitive, with still a few months left until the September 15 eligibility deadline.

Arlo Parks has shared “Impurities,” a new song from her upcoming album My Soft Machine. Check it out below.
Heavy thumping bass anchors “Impurities,” but the song swirls with gentle synths as Arlo Parks sings about the joy of finding people who love you despite your faults — it’s like “radiating like a star,” as she puts it.
“This is a song about community,” Parks shared in a statement. “Being around people who make you feel like your inner ugliness and failures and mistakes don’t matter, who lift you up and make you laugh, who make you feel good and clean.” The song comes with a music video directed by Jak Payne, which Parks said conveys the “atmospheric oscillation between solitude and companionship.”

Here are the 10 artists we think you should keep an eye on in 2023.
Bloody Civilian
Nigerian singer and producer Bloody Civilian is a born storyteller, drawing on her west African heritage along with influences such as Frank Ocean and Kid Cudi. Born Emoseh Khamofu, she released her debut single “How to Kill a Man” – a heady concoction of juddering rhythms and infectious hooks – last year. This was followed by “Wake Up”, a collaboration with fellow Nigerian artist Rema that appeared on the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack. Don’t mess with her – she’s here to slay. Sam Fender, Little Simz, and Harry Styles are among the artists shortlisted for the 2022 Mercury Prize.
The shortlist was unveiled in July, comprising 12 albums – from rap and jazz to indie and Cornish folk-rock – that will compete for the coveted award at a ceremony held this September.
This year’s entries are among the most eclectic in recent years. Little Simz is shortlisted for the second time with her critically adored Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, following on from her nod in 2019 for Grey Area.
Rock singer Sam Fender receives his debut nomination for his second LP, Seventeen Going Under, as does pop star Harry Styles, who has been shortlisted for his third studio album, Harry’s House. His record is arguably the most “pure pop” album to be shortlisted since Ed Sheeran’s controversial nomination in 2017.
First-time nominees make up most of this year’s nominees, following last year’s shortlist which included 10 debuts.

The Grammys, unlike the usually more-or-less accurately forecasted Oscars, are always full of surprises, this year hardly being any exception. Jon Batiste receiving a leading five wins? Who saw that coming — except for anyone who saw him coming in with a leading 11 nominations and figured the math might translate?
But that arithmetic did not carry over for the highly nominated Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X, who went home empty-handed, or produce the results quite expected for Olivia Rodrigo and the Tony Bennett/Lady Gaga teaming.
Meanwhile, during the pre-telecast Premiere Ceremony presentation, live-streamed on the Recording Academy’s YouTube channel, there were other kind of surprises including some seemingly honest confusion about given names and gender involving best new artist nominee and pre-telecast presenter Arlo Parks and veteran bluegrass picker (and pre-telecast winner) Bela Fleck. After all, the Grammys are one very, very long day for all involved.

Arlo Parks appeared on The Late Show to perform her recent single, “Softly.” The intimate performance, filmed behind the scenes and on the stage of a concert venue, marks Parks’ first time on the late-night show.
Parks released “Softly,” along with an emotional music video directed by Zhang and Knight, in February. The song reflects on the disintegration of a relationship.
“‘Softly’ is a song about yearning, about how fragile you feel in the dying days of a relationship when you’re still desperately in love,” the Grammy-nominated singer explained in a statement.

As society progresses, we’ve seen increasing acceptance of queer artists in the music industry, particularly in the past decade. While there have always been queer artists making iconic music — from Tchaikovsky to Wendy Carlos to K.D. Lang — these past few years have shown a great influx in not only the number of out artists, but also explicitly queer themes in their music. As such, the Grammys, self-described as music’s biggest night, have also evolved in their treatment of LGBTQ+ artists. And 2022 could be a banner year.
The 2022 Grammys already mark an important milestone for queer musicians. For Record of the Year, three openly queer artists are nominated. Lady Gaga, who’s bisexual, is nominated for her joyous jazz collaboration “I Get A Kick Out Of You” with Tony Bennett. Brandi Carlile, a lesbian, is nominated once again in this category with “Right On Time,” following her Record of...

British singer-songwriter Arlo Parks has released a new single, “Softly” — an intimate, emotional song detailing the disintegration of a relationship. The standalone track’s release is accompanied by a music video, directed by Zhang and Knight.
“‘Softly’ is a song about yearning, about how fragile you feel in the dying days of a relationship when you’re still desperately in love,” the Grammy-nominated singer explained in a statement. “The song is about how it feels to brace yourself before the blow of a break up and reminisce about the days where it all felt luminous.
