Anyone who hasn’t stumbled into the world of online Actual Plays is, first of all, missing out on a lot of fun, but second of all, hasn’t encountered the series of truly fascinating creative choices that the production teams behind them get to make. The form can involve any podcast or web series where a cast of actors play a tabletop role-playing game like Dungeons & Dragons for audience consumption, either taped in advance or streamed live on platforms like Twitch.
Actual Plays offer a dual sense of immersion for viewers: They simulate both the experience of playing with friends (who happen to be top-tier storytellers) and the pleasures of fantasy, heroic characters exploring inventive worlds, and outsiders banding together to fight forces of oppression. By showing the table, Actual Plays make the act of imagining into a team sport.

Despite being based on a novel from the 1860s, Les Miserables is one of the most well-known musical films of today’s times. The award-winning movie premiered in December 2012 and featured talented actors like Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, and Russell Crowe. Amanda Seyfried also appeared as Cosette. But a decade after making the film, Seyfried revealed she has one regret involving her performance.
The cast in ‘Les Miserables’ sang live while filming
When Les Miserables was celebrating its 10th anniversary, many of the award-winning movie’s cast sat down with Working Title to reflect on the film and the process behind creating it. As Hathaway put it, “It’s going to be different, for sure. This is the first time anyone’s tried it like this.”
What Hathaway was referring to was the live singing during production. Opting away from the traditional method of going to a studio to record...

Miniseries The White Lotus also cleaned up in the Limited Series or Anthology Series category, winning three awards including Best Series. It was initially meant for one season but was such a hit that a second season set in Sicily is now in production.
Emmy Awards Winners List
Abbott Elementary’s creator Quinta Brunson was honored with her first Emmy for writing the show’s pilot, and star Sheryl Lee Ralph also got the Supporting Actress Award for comedy. The Hollywood Critics Association Awards happened this weekend with them splitting the ceremony into two nights: the first dedicated to broadcast and cable, the second night devoted on streaming.
The Hca’s big cable winner actually went to two shows in a tie, with AMC’s Better Call Saul and HBO’s Succession splitting the award for Best Cable Network Drama Series. Better Call Saul‘s much-anticipated series finale airs tonight on AMC.
Better Call Saul actually cleaned up at the Hca’s, winning Best Actor in a Broadcast or Cable Drama Series for star Bob Odenkirk. Giancarlo Esposito won Best Supporting Actor in a Broadcast or Cable Drama Series, while their co-star, Rhea Seehorn, goes on to win the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Broadcast or Cable Drama Series. It’s a nice way for that show’s run to end, and hopefully the Emmys will take note.

Fraud: so hot right now.
We’ll leave it to the sociologists to determine exactly why, but stories about big time liars are huge right now. The recent trend arguably got started this year with the Netflix series Inventing Anna, which covered one woman’s successful attempts to convince New York society she was a German heiress. Coming up later in March is WeCrashed on Apple TV+, which will follow the meteoric rise and precipitous fall of joint workspace company WeWork.
Now Hulu is presenting its own fraudulent epic with limited series The Dropout, which is set to unpack arguably the most flagrant, outrageous, and bizarre case of corporate fraud in the new millennium. The Dropout is based on an ABC News podcast of the same name, which was in turn inspired by Wall Street Journalist John Carreyrou’s coverage of entrepreneur...
