Kii Muneyuki, a former head of production at Japan’s Toei, is launching K2 Pictures, a company that aims to upend Japanese filmmaking practices. Its debut slate, with films by Kore-eda Hirokazu, Iwai Shunji and Nishikawa Miwa, will be unveiled in Cannes next week.
A key part of the new company’s strategy is the establishment of a film fund, K2P Film Fund I, that will invest in live action and animations productions. It aims to attract investors from Japan, other parts of Asia and the U.S.
The company explains that “most Japanese films today are made under a system found only in this country of ‘production committees’ formed by such organizations as film companies, TV stations, and publishers. Funding under this system comes only from sources with film-related know-how, making entry difficult and limiting returns to both producers and creators.”

Former Toei producer Muneyuki Kim has launched K2 Pictures, which will work with major directors such as Hirokazu Kore-eda and aim to create a new funding ecosystem for Japanese animated and live-action features.
The plan is to return profits that would traditionally go to film companies to investors and creators, which its founder says closely follows approaches used in Hollywood and elsewhere. Creators who team with K2 will be able to participate on projects as shareholders.
Kii, who will be K2’s CEO, says most Japanese films are produced through a system of ‘production committees’ with industry know-how formed through film companies, TV networks and publishers, which it believes makes entry into the market difficult and limits returns to producers and creators.

The friendships on New Girl are just as important to the series as the romantic relationships. The show wouldn’t be what it is without the unique dynamics of the central friend group, both as a whole and within different pairings. Some friendships on the show are more expected, like Cece (Hannah Simone) and Jess (Zooey Deschanel), and are there from the beginning to the end of the series. Others kind of appear out of nowhere, like Nick (Jake Johnson) and Tran (Ralph Ahn), and yet it’s hard to imagine the show without them.
New Girl is a great reminder at how important it is to let comedies explore relationships both within and outside of the core friend group. It’s one thing to see how the characters get along as a whole, but pairing people off who may or may not have much in common initially is an...

Zooey Deschanel is widely recognized for her deadpan comedy roles but the actress expanded her portfolio by working in dramatic roles with projects like Manic (2001), All the Real Girls (2003), and The Driftless Area (2015). However, portraying the role of Jess Day on the Fox sitcom, New Girl was what fans usually remember her by, since she was one of the lead cast, who was there from the beginning to the end of the series.

“If something is boring after two minutes, try it for four. If still boring, then eight. Then sixteen. Then thirty-two. Eventually one discovers that it is not boring at all.”
— John Cage
Sátántangó’s first few minutes provide an unsubtle hint that we’re in for a slow and gloomy slog, though you would expect that from any film by Béla Tarr. The Hungarian master, currently retired (he insists), is an international star who never set out to make a crowd-pleaser, even if his primary characters are pleasure-seeking proles at large in the swampy ruins of the post-Communist Eastern European Bloc.
Sátántangó commences with a wide, stagnant shot over a muddy paddock, a congregation of cows rooted in puddles in the near distance. The cows are themselves pretty interesting to observe, especially as one or two appear aware of the camera. They saunter toward the edges of the frame, and the camera bestirs itself,...

Annette Bening, who recently starred in Netflix’s biopic “Nyad,” will receive a special Golden Medallion tribute award from the Telluride Film Festival on Jan. 6, 2024. Meg Ryan will present the award to her at Netflix’s Tudum Theater in Los Angeles. The event will also feature a conversation focused on her career trajectory, which Bening’s “Nyad” co-star Jodie Foster will moderate.
Due to the actors strike, Bening was unable to accept the honor at the Telluride Film Festival in September, marking the first time Telluride has presented an honor outside of the dates of the festival. Previous Golden Medallion recipients include Cate Blanchett, Anthony Hopkins and Kate Winslet.
Bening was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for portraying Diana Nyad. She has also received Oscar nominations for “The Grifters,” “American Beauty,” “Being Julia” and “The Kids Are All Right.”

The A-list cast of Netflix’s Zero Day continues to grow.
The limited series starring Robert De Niro has added five actors — Angela Bassett, Dan Stevens, Matthew Modine, Bill Camp and McKinley Belcher III — to its ensemble. Clark Gregg, Gaby Hoffmann and Mark Ivanir have also signed on for guest roles.
They join a cast headed by De Niro — in the first lead TV role of his career — that also features Lizzy Caplan, Jesse Plemons, Joan Allen and Connie Britton.
Zero Day stars De Niro as George Mullen, a popular but complicated former president who comes out of retirement to head a commission investigating a devastating cyberattack. The six-episode thriller comes from creators Eric Newman (Narcos, The Watcher), Noah Oppenheim (screenwriter of Jackie and former president of NBC News) and Michael S. Schmidt, a Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times reporter. The series has begun filming in New York.

Donald Trump has spent the last three years alleging that the 2020 election was rigged against him. The former president and his allies have done everything in their power to prove Joe Biden’s win was fraudulent, to no avail, because it wasn’t. Team Trump has simultaneously been laying the groundwork to make sure the 2024 election goes their way and, if it doesn’t, that their effort to bend the results in their favor will be more successful next year than it was after Trump’s reelection effort went down in flames.

Plot: A mild-mannered academic (Nicolas Cage) discovers that he’s the center of a strange phenomenon, with people worldwide suddenly seeing him in their dreams. At first, thrilled with the attention and sudden fame, he finds himself despised and “cancelled” when the dreams turn violent.
Review: Dream Scenario is a very “now” movie, with it a blazing satire of sudden fame and “cancel culture,” with director Kristoffer Borgli showing utter contempt for both. It’s the perfect vehicle for Nicolas Cage, as perhaps more than any actor, his likeness has been commodified over the years, being used and manipulated in meme after meme in a way that’s totally out of his control.
Likewise, his character, Paul Matthews, has no control over how people view him. Sporting a bald pate, a beard and the kind of nasal voice he used in Peggy Sue Got Married, Cage fully inhabits the role...

I went on my first and only trek in my life, back in 2016. A person who regularly goes mountain climbing would find that trek rather easy, but for a non-adventurous person like me, it was quite a daunting task. Some parts of it were really scary. But the feeling of pulling it off was unparalleled as well. I will probably never go on another trek again, but I am forever going to cherish that particular moment of reaching the top as one of the most thrilling and satisfying moments of my life. The reason I am bringing it all up here is the new Netflix documentary Camp Courage. At its core, it is essentially the story of a little girl, all about ten, going on a camping trip. However, it is much more than that.

Although Max Greenfield's "New Girl" character, Schmidt, has just one daughter (named after Ruth Bader Ginsburg!), in real life, the actor shares two kids with his wife, Tess Sanchez Greenfield, who works as a casting director. The duo got married in 2008 and have since welcomed a daughter, Lilly, and a son, Ozzie. Tess frequently shares photos of their squad on social media, and Max has taken to TikTok quite a few times to share sweet videos with his kids (including a deeply iconic dance with Lilly to Olivia Rodrigo's "Get Him Back").
Max and Tess opened up about their family during a September 2021 interview with Parents magazine. Max revealed that he didn't feel ready to be a dad when Tess got pregnant with Lilly, joking, "You're a psychopath if you're about to have your first child and you're like, 'I'm ready for this!' But after Lilly, I knew I wanted a second.

Comedy, as it turns out, is quite subjective. Folks have some strong opinions about what does and does not make them laugh. Thankfully, strong opinions are exactly what we’re looking for.

“Try to Remember,” the most famous song to have come out of the stage musical “The Fantasticks,” was noted for its autumnal feel, sung by someone reflecting back on youthful days. The happy irony is that Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt wrote that song prior to the show’s original 1960 staging when they were both still relatively young men of about 30, fellows who still had about two-thirds of their lives ahead of them. Schmidt, who wrote the music, died in 2018 at age 88, and Jones, who penned the show’s lyrics and book, died Friday at 95.
Here’s to it having been a heck of a long way from September to December.
When the movie version of the show came out in the fall of 2000, I wrote about it for Entertainment Weekly and said that “for my money, ‘The Fantasticks’ is the best pure live–action movie musical since ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show.’” Now,...

Tom Jones, who wrote the book and lyrics for the musical The Fantasticks, the longest-running musical in theater history, has died. He was 95.
He died Friday at his home in Sharon, Connecticut, following a battle with cancer, his son Michael told The New York Times.
Born Feb. 17, 1928, in Littlefield, Texas, Jones studied drama at the University of Texas in 1945 and met his longtime collaborator, Harvey Schmidt. After getting a master’s degree several years later, he and Schmidt were drafted during the Korean War.
Following his time in the service, Jones moved to New York to begin his career in theater. One of his first opportunities included working with composer John Donald Robb. He and Robb also developed the musical Joy Comes to Deadhorse, loosely based on Edmond Rostand’s 1894 play Les Romanesques. But the two ended up going their separate ways due to creative differences, and Jones continued to work on the musical.

Fans got to see Jess Day, Nick Miller, Schmidt, Cece Parekh, Winston Bishop, and even Coach all find love and move past the roommate phase of life when the show ended. It still hasn’t stopped fans from hoping for a reboot, so what exactly is the cast of New Girl up to these days?
Zooey Deschanel has been trying out different entertainment jobs in recent years
Zooey Deschanel, the actor who portrayed Jessica Day in New Girl, was already well-known when she signed onto the series. She had a successful movie career before the series. Some fans assumed she’d head right back to the big screen, but she didn’t do that following the sitcom’s end. Instead, she expanded her horizons...

Arthur R. Schmidt, the Oscar-winning film editor who worked on Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Forrest Gump, and Back to the Future, has died at the age of 85.
The Los Angeles native followed in the footsteps of his father Arthur P. Schmidt, who was also a film editor.
The younger Schmidt caught his big break working on 1980’s Coal Miner’s Daughter, which earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Film Editing. Five years later, he edited the first Back to the Future, marking the beginning of a fruitful partnership with filmmaker Rober Zemeckis. Dutch director Marc Schmidt is no stranger to films on mental health. If Only Night Wouldn’t Fall continues his interest in the subject, as well as suggesting how it might be explored from unusual angles. Ostensibly an ensemble documentary with a cast of characters who speak about their own particular diagnosis and more generally, their individual lives, it also has an interest in organisations that work with people facing mental health issues.
We visit a school in Norway for troubled children, learn of one Dutch man’s history of psychosis, and learn of a community in Florida that collects’ residents data as part of a set of preventative measures to help improve health and wellbeing. Schmidt has a clear interest in these interactions with professionals and the sometimes unclear definitions of what constitutes a mental disorder, questioning whether diagnoses should be taken as fact, and how data is collected,...

Amazingly, it’s been 11 years since the first 21 Jump Street hit theaters. The 2012 feature saw Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum play Schmidt and Jenko. The two cops join a Jump Street unit, using their youthful appearance to go undercover as high school students. The aim? To shut down a dangerous drug ring. The remake was based on a modern popular television series of the same name. Johnny Depp got his fame from the 21 Jump Street series, which ran for a total of five seasons. Doing a reboot is extremely tricky. Oftentimes, executives remake films or shows because...

If you watched host Ariana DeBose dance her way through the stellar opening number at the 2023 Tony Awards, you may have wondered: who is that woman playing the piano in the lobby of the United Palace? You wouldn’t be alone. The musician in question is newly minted Tony winner Macy Schmidt, and she made history this season.
Schmidt received her first Tony nomination this year as a co-producer on “Parade.” She became a Tony winner when that production prevailed in the Best Revival of a Musical race. But she made history with her other project this year: serving as an additional orchestrator for Best Musical winner “Kimberly Akimbo.” Schmidt is the only woman of color orchestrator in Broadway history.

The Netflix series “Zero Day,” which marks Robert De Niro’s first regular television role, has shut down production, Variety has learned from sources.
The series had recently begun production in New York but is now on hold amid the ongoing writers’ strike. There is currently no set date for work to resume on the show.
Netflix declined to comment.
Variety exclusively reported that the show was ordered to series at Netflix back in March. Per the official logline, “Zero Day” “asks the question on everyone’s mind — how do we find truth in a world in crisis, one seemingly being torn apart by forces outside our control? And in an era rife with conspiracy theory and subterfuge, how much of those forces are products of our own doing, perhaps even of our own imagining?”
Lizzy Caplan, Jesse Plemons, Joan Allen, and Connie Britton all joined De Niro in the series back in April.

Exclusive: Netflix’s upcoming high-profile limited series Zero Day, starring and executive produced by Robert De Niro, has become the latest project whose production has been impacted by the ongoing writers strike.
With the WGA work stoppage in its 38th day and a potential SAG-AFTRA strike on the horizon, the cast and crew of Zero Day were sent home yesterday, Deadline has learned. The series, which has been filming in and around New York, has shut down for the duration of the work stoppage(s). Given the fluid situation, with writers on the picket lines while SAG-AFTRA is negotiating with AMPTP, there is no set return date, we hear. September has been floated as a possibility.

It's not a summer without a touch of cruelty to it. Throw in a thrilling mystery, some shady suspects, and many heart-pounding twists and turns, and you've got Freeform's addictive murder mystery, Cruel Summer.
The return of this sleeper hit kicked off a brand new case that will excite and keep us guessing.
And based on the set-up of Cruel Summer Season 2 Episode 1 and Cruel Summer Season 2 Episode 2, plenty of secrets are rising to the surface. We've got a summer of intrigue and drama awaiting us, Cruel Summer fans.
For Cruel Summer Season 2, many of the same elements from Cruel Summer Season 1 returned. Like the color grading through the years, the computer intro (which I'm calling the "archive"), and the time jumping.
These aspects worked before, so I'm glad they weren't dropped for the new story. These pieces make Cruel Summer feel like Cruel Summer.

If you went to the movies in 1989 you might have heard Indiana Jones growl the line “it belongs in a museum.” You’ll hear him say it again in The Dial of Destiny (premiering this week at a notably geriatric Cannes Film Festival) but you won’t get his enemy’s timely response: “So do you.” Harrison Ford was 49 years old back then, in a film called The Last Crusade––which it, of course, was not. Ford returned as Jones in 2008 for Steven Spielberg’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and now, miraculously, once again for director James Mangold’s first swing at the franchise: an effects-drenched, largely amiable swan song for the whip-cracking explorer that never really lives up to its hero’s adventurous spirit.

On Super Bowl Sunday 2018, director Ava DuVernay tweeted, "#FilmTwitter is going to explode tonight. Something is coming that I can hardly believe. Lawd. History in the making." She was teasing Netflix's surprise release of "The Cloverfield Paradox," the third installment in the hit sci-fi and horror franchise. The film hadn't officially been announced, but it dropped on the streaming service right after the game ended, sending shockwaves through the entertainment industry. Unfortunately -- perhaps in part because the hype reached wild levels in the hours leading up to the film's release -- critics were not fans of the movie. DuVernay has since deleted her tweet.
"The Cloverfield Paradox" is a relatively derivative sci-fi thriller. It spends much of its runtime explaining what's going on, spelling out the rules of its plot mechanics. At the same time, its story can be tough to follow. It also bends over backwards to...

During a panel on the future of Pasifika storytelling held in downtown Los Angeles Thursday evening by the Pasifika Entertainment Advancement Komiti, Peak co-founder and executive director Kristian Fanene Schmidt proposed a question to the participants: Should the AA be separated from the Pi in Aapi? The answer regarding Asian American and Pacific Islander representation in Hollywood is as complicated as the enduring fight for greater pan-Pacific presence onscreen, the panelists noted, though the undercurrent of the hesitant responses was indeed “yes.”
“Last night at the Writer’s Guild meeting there was an Asian writer who walked up on the question side and said, ‘I’m Asian, I’m an Asian American writer, and it’s Asian American month, and I screamed out, ‘What about the PIs?’” recalled Freddie Gutierrez, a writer for Nickelodeon’s That Girl Lay Lay, who hails from Guam. “She looked and she just kept on going.

This article contains Major spoilers for all seven seasons of New Girl
Let’s clear something up straight away: there are no bad episodes of New Girl.
In fact, this list could easily have started with the pilot and moved right on through to the incredibly moving season seven finale.
New Girl is one of those rare sitcoms you fall in love with from its first moments. The combination of unapologetically quirky, original writing, and the comic chemistry of the main cast – Max Greenfield as Schmidt, Jake Johnson as Nick, Hannah Simone as Cece, Lamorne Morris as Winston, Dayman Wayans Jr as Coach, and of course Zooey Deschanel as Jess – makes it a lovable and rewatchable hit.
Here are what we believe – after much soul searching – are New Girl’s 20 best episodes (plus a few honorable mentions):
20. What About Fred?

Two years ago, Accused Season 1 Episode 9 might have seemed dystopian. Less than a year after the Supreme Court dismantled protections afforded women with Roe vs. Wade, effectively transferring the matter to the states, it's our reality.
"Jack's Story" found Jack at the heart of a terrible situation in which one of his students desperately wanted to terminate her pregnancy but without a tenable route to do it.
Enter Jack, the teacher with a heart of gold, who made her problem his problem, everyone else be damned. It caused him much more than he bargained, but he didn't lose the women he loved, Britney, played by For All Mankind's Wrenn Schmidt.
I tuned into this episode just minutes after reading that the governor of Wyoming was looking to ban the morning-after pill, and as many southern states are considering the death penalty for women seeking abortion services.
It creates a very uneasy feeling,...

The North Road Company has inked a deal with the Israeli-based film and television company Sipur for “Bad Boy,” a drama series hailing from “Euphoria” creator Ron Leshem and director Hagar Ben-Asher.
The crime drama series, which began principal photography in January, follows Dean, a successful comedian whose stint in a juvenile detention facility as a teenage threatens to shatter his career and life when information regarding his past resurfaces. While in jail, as Dean bonded with a mysterious teenager convicted of murder, he learned to harness his creativity and intelligence — traits Dean still holds with him years later.
The collaboration marks North Road’s first international co-studio deal since its formal launch in July 2022, and North Road and Sipur, formerly Tadmor Entertainment, are co-financing the series alongside Israeli platform Hot and Tedy Productions.

He also learns to harness his unique intelligence and creativity and, 20 years later, these traits define Dean as a star comedian, while his time in jail is a secret threatening to resurface and tear his life apart.
