The Center Theatre Group is pausing its season programming at its Mark Taper Forum theater and laying off 10 percent of staff across the theater company after experiencing sustained drops in ticket revenue and donations, alongside rising production costs following the pandemic.
“We are still facing a crisis unlike any other in our fifty-six-year history,” the theater organization said in a post.
The theater organization will stop season programming at the 739-seat Taper starting in July and through the 2023-2024 season. This will impact the world premiere of Fake It Until You Make It by Larissa FastHorse and directed by Michael John Garcés, which Center Theatre Group plans to move to a future season. The tour stop of Cambodian Rock Band by Lauren Yee and directed by Chay Yew, has been canceled.
A Transparent Musical, based on the Amazon Prime TV series, is currently running at the Taper through June 25.

The 2023-24 theater season at Los Angeles’ Mark Taper Forum will be halted in July due to what its operators are calling the aftereffects of the Covid pandemic, an economic “crisis unlike any other in our fifty-six-year history.”
In a statement, Center Theatre Group, which operates the Taper as well as the Ahmanson and Kirk Douglas venues, said that the pause in programming at the Taper will include the postponement of the world premiere of Fake It Until You Make It by Larissa FastHorse and the cancelation of the previously announced tour stop of Cambodian Rock Band by Lauren Yee.
“Pausing season programming at the Taper is a difficult but necessary decision that will impact artists and audiences,” the Ctg statement says, adding that the move “is particularly painful for the talented and committed Ctg staff who have dedicated so much to bringing great theatre to L.A.”

The Drama League today announced the nominations for the 2023 Drama League Awards. Honoring achievements on and Off-Broadway, the nominations were announced this morning by Roger Bart (“Back to the Future: The Musical”) and Justin Guarini (“Once Upon A One More Time”) at the New York Library for the Performing Arts. Winners will be revealed at the 89th Annual Drama League Awards ceremony at the Ziegfeld Ballroom on Friday, May 19, 2023.
“I don’t think I’ve experienced a theater season in New York ever like this one,” noted Artistic Director Gabriel Stelian-Shanks. “There’s been a range, a breadth, an expansion of possibility that has been truly astonishing to witness. Theater makers have inspired not only with their creativity, but also with their drive and determination to serve audiences with vision and talent. These nominees reflect the promise and greatness inherent in the work of theater folk, and I can’t help but be deeply proud.

This week, Larissa FastHorse became the first Native American woman to have a play produced on Broadway. "The Thanksgiving Play," which is now showing at the Hayes Theater, stars D'Arcy Carden, Katie Finneran ("Noises Off"), Scott Foley, and Chris Sullivan ("This Is Us") as four white actors who try to put together a culturally sensitive Thanksgiving school play - and fail miserably.
Directed by Tony Award winner Rachel Chavkin ("Hadestown"), "The Thanksgiving Play" is only the second play by a Native American playwright - and the first by a Native American woman - to appear on Broadway. In anticipation of opening night, FastHorse, who is Sicangu Lakota, sat down with Popsugar to talk about comedy and satire, Native representation in theater, and holding the door open for the next generation of Native playwrights.
This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Eight years is pretty close to eternity when it comes to sell-by dates for topical humor, which might be one reason that the jokes in Larissa FastHorse’s Broadway comedy The Thanksgiving Play fall flat as an underbaked pie. We can only surmise that when she first began writing this satire on Liberal guilt, woke sensitivities and Goopy indulgence back in 2015, words like “decoupling” and “soy milk” seemed like terrific punchlines.
Opening tonight at the Hayes Theater, The Thanksgiving Play, directed by Rachel Chavkin and starring D’Arcy Carden, Katie Finneran, Scott Foley, and Chris Sullivan – all of whom, director and cast, have done much better work on other stages – is the sort of easy-target satire that should by all rights have sophisticated New York audiences seeing their own foibles and smiling at their own political vulnerabilities.
So where exactly does this Thanksgiving go awry?...

Broadway’s The Phantom of the Opera had yet another smashing, down-to-the-wire week at the Majestic, grossing more than $3 million for the second consecutive week as the countdown to its April 16 closing continues.
Meanwhile, another villainous character – the bloodthirsty killer of the ecstatically reviewed Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street – also made good, selling out its opening week at the Lunt-Fontanne with a $1,394,402 gross. Average ticket price was $132.98.
The two productions made hefty contributions to Broadway’s overall box office take of $32,656,200 for the week ending March 26. That’s a 4% dip from the previous week, although attendance of 259,758 held steady. The slip in receipts reflects a slightly lower average ticket price, due at least in some part to the annual Kids Week promotion, in which attendees under 18 at 21 of Broadway’s 31 shows got in free.

Mj: The Musical, the four-time Tony winner that centers on the making of Michael Jackson’s 1992-93 Dangerous World Tour, will kick off Broadway in Hollywood’s 2023-24 season at the Hollywood Pantages, the Nederlander Organization announced Wednesday.
The slate includes five Los Angeles premieres, one pre-Broadway L.A. premiere and the return of an American classic.
Mj: The Musical, created by Christopher Wheeldon and Lynn Nottage, is scheduled to run Dec. 20 through Jan. 28, 2024. In her THR review of the show last year, Lovia Gyarkye wrote that “Mj, like its subject, is captivating and hard to shake.”
Next up will be the pre-Broadway Los Angeles premiere of a new production of the Tony-winning The Wiz (Feb. 13-March 3, 2024), the musical’s first major revival in 40 years. That will be followed March 5-24 by a 25th-anniversary production of Chicago, the longest-running American musical in Broadway history.

D’Arcy Carden will make her Broadway debut this spring in the premiere of Larissa Fasthorse’s The Thanksgiving Play.
Carden, who most recently starred in the Amazon series A League Of Their Own, after her well-known role as Janet in The Good Place, will be joined Katie Finneran (Noises Off, Promises, Promises on Broadway), Scott Foley (Scandal, The Unit) and Chris Sullivan (This is Us, Chicago on Broadway).
Previews for the play at the Hayes Theater start March 25, with an opening night set for April 20. Rachel Chavkin, the Tony-Award winning director of Hadestown, directs.
While it has been produced across the country, after having its world premiere off-Broadway at Playwrights’ Horizons in 2018, this will be the first Broadway production of The Thanksgiving Play. The satirical comedy follows a troupe of theater artists as they attempt to put on a politically correct Thanksgiving school pageant.

The Thanksgiving Play, which had its Off Broadway world premiere in 2018 and has become one of the top 10 produced plays, will make its Broadway debut in spring 2023 in a staging by Tony-winning Hadestown director Rachel Chavkin.
The Second Stage Theater production, set for the Hayes Theater, will make FastHorse the first female Native American playwright ever produced on Broadway.
“Larissa FastHorse’s unique voice deserves to be heard on the Broadway stage and I’m very excited for her biting satire, The Thanksgiving Play, to have the larger audience it deserves,” said Second Stage President and Artistic Director Carole Rothman.
Described as a satirical comedy, The Thanksgiving Play follows a troupe of well-meaning theater artists who “dream of creating something revolutionary: a culturally sensitive, totally inoffensive Thanksgiving school pageant that finally gives a voice to Native Americans. Finding said Native Americans… isn’t so simple. And that’s when things start to get absurd.
