The DC Animated Universe had a host of versions of Batman strewn across the timeline, but one DC film portrayed the character a little differently than what is usually the tone that is taken for him. Bruce Timm talked to ScienceFiction.com about how he saw Batman, and how one particular film approached the character differently.
Gotham by Gaslight
Gotham by Gaslight is a film that is different than other Batman films, given that the story is set in an Elseworlds, which means it might not necessarily be part of the main Dcau continuity. The film takes Batman and sets him in Victorian London, where the story follows a completely separate trajectory from what is normally expected out of a Batman story.

The DC Animated Universe wouldn’t be what it is today if it were not for Bruce Timm. The legendary DC icon’s contribution to the tales of Batman: The Animated Series and Batman Beyond is irrefutable. And yet, the artist’s reach can only extend so far in giving the audience hope of a new era of comics and their adaptations.

However, Bruce Timm’s authority does reach Batman Beyond for being essential in its creation and successful execution during a period of extreme turmoil at DC. After decades of hoping to witness Terry McGinnis back in action, the dream could finally get a shot at coming true.

There is a great beauty to what Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part 3 is doing—two voice actors who spend a huge part of their careers working together as one of the most iconic duos of all time; The Batman and The Joker. Collaborating for the final time, they get to perform, even though one of them has already passed on.

Batman is a versatile character. He has worn the faces of saviors and destroyers, been the Dark Knight in caped armor, the financial support of the Justice League, and occasionally, even a father figure. Despite this, there is one thing that has stayed constant through most of his versions; the bat does not kill.
Batman: The Animated Series starred Kevin Conroy
Kevin Conroy, who played the character for almost three decades, understood this fact about the character perfectly. He maintained a sort of consistency throughout all of the versions he played, and it seemed to be quite intentional. Specifically talking about the ‘no killing’ rule, it would seem that the voice actor upheld it almost as strictly as the Caped Crusader himself.
So much so, that he was upset with one of the most controversial decisions taken in the Snyderverse; Ben Affleck’s Batman killing people.

In the 90 years since his creation, Superman has had many different versions. There have been many to stand out from these, for good and bad reasons. Perhaps one of the most controversial has to be Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel, which is a darker version of the character. While many fans loved the fresher approach, there were many fundamental changes made that completely went against the character’s philosophy.

Tim Daly was 3 years and 15 days old when his would-be childhood hero George Reeves was found dead of an apparent suicide at age 45. The man who played Superman would go on to inspire countless other adaptations of DC characters, including Adam West’s Batman in 1966. Later, Daly himself became the Man of Steel in a legendary run of Superman: The Animated Series that began in 1996 and lasted till 2012.

The lackluster release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has shaken trust in Rocksteady, known for its successful work on the Arkham series. One of the main reasons for the game’s poor sales is its live service concept, which is considered a curse in the gaming world, leading people to quickly lose interest and go away. That said, the Season 1 content released recently has also faced criticism. Angry Joe thinks so, too.
The game’s commitment to live service and subsequent failure do not appear salvageable. For some fans, the Season 1 content seemed like a promising salvation for the title, especially with the Joker coming as a playable character. However, judging by the reactions of industry figures like AngryJoeShow, things are not going well here either.

Actor Kevin Conroy has been synonymous with Batman ever since he rendered his voice to the character in Batman: The Animated Series. The actor has gone on to lend his voice to Batman and Bruce Wayne in other media such as the Arkham games as well as WB’s DC Animated Universe films such as Batman: The Killing Joke and Batman: Mask of the Phantasm.
While Conroy has been known for his particular brand of performing the iconic superhero, he reportedly had issues with the way Zack Snyder depicted him in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016. The voice actor reportedly had issues, particularly with Batman’s penchant for killing in the film as he is famously known for his ‘no-kill’ rule.

Alan Moore is a comic writer responsible for countless classics, but what most people remember him for is his work at DC Comics: "Watchmen," "Batman: The Killing Joke," etc. Moore himself, though, has disowned these works, since they're owned by the company that screwed him over on creators' rights, and he maintains disinterest in discussing them or adaptations.
I'll say this since I'm one of them — comic fans can be quite thin-skinned. So, they've turned Moore and his current dislike of superhero media into evidence that he's just a grouchy and bitter old man. As a counter-argument, I'll present a Twitter thread from his daughter Leah Moore (herself a comic creator), one written in defense of her "internet-averse" father.
Mrs. Moore documents how her father fell out of love with superhero comics, the passion of his youth, as he got a firsthand look at the dirty machinery of the industry.

With the copyrights for DC Comics’ biggest characters — Superman, Batman, Joker, and Wonder Woman — entering the public domain in 2034, 2035, 2036, and 2037, respectively, Variety has published a new report explaining how DC and Warner Bros. have begun preparing for the future.
At the most public level, co-head of DC Studios James Gunn has already mapped out a new DC Universe with an eye on spotlighting lesser-known characters. For example, the tentpole film Superman: Legacy will introduce a group of superhumans called The Authority. Along the same lines, a Batman movie titled The Brave and the Bold will star a new Batman actor while expanding members of “the Bat family.” This includes Batman’s biological son, Damian Wayne, as a version of Robin.

Perhaps it’s the juxtaposition of a grim, grief-stricken protagonist with the merriest of festive seasons or the aesthetic choice of pitting a dark, shadowy hero against the resplendent beauty of snow and lights—whatever the reason might be, Batman shares a rather unique connection with Christmas Eve. Some of the best Batman media out there, like Batman Returns, Arkham Origins, and a number of animated series episodes, perfectly highlight the connection—and its about time we had a Batman movie solely dedicated to celebrating it as well. WB Animation/MGM Studio’s Merry Little Batman, DC’s latest animated feature, is the perfect Christmas movie Bat-fans have been waiting for and a much-needed call-back to the Cape Crusader’s fun-filled, light-hearted adventures, which are almost on the verge of going extinct due to the obsession with a darker tone.

"Merry Little Batman" is the latest Warner Bros. Animation movie, part of the wave of DC animated titles that Warner Bros. Discovery stupidly gave away under David Zaslav's regime.
The film follows Damian Wayne as he is forced to defend his home, and eventually all of Gotham, from supervillains while Batman is away one Christmas Eve. It is part Batman movie, part "Home Alone," part "The Grinch", and full Caped Crusader bliss. "Merry Little Batman" features a distinct and unique visual style that is reminiscent of Tim Burton's animated productions, with director Mike Roth ("Regular Show") giving the film an illustrative look inspired by Ronald Searle.
Arguably, the standout element is, well, Batman. Though the focus is definitely on Damian's story, this is a Batman unlike any we've seen in TV or film. This is a Batman without the growl. Instead, this Batman is a goof.

Fatherhood apparently has a way of slowing you down. Take Batman, for instance. He’s clearly not at his fittest in this new Amazon Prime animated film, in which he looks more like a burly lumberjack than a superhero, wearing dad jeans, a flannel shirt and a heavy beard. Fortunately, he’s not the hero tasked with saving Gotham City yet again in the Yuletide-set Merry Little Batman. That would be Damian, his eight-year-old son, who clearly takes after his old man when it comes to fighting supervillains.
Damian (voiced by Yonas Kibreab) displays the typical energy of a pre-adolescent, chasing his cat around the expansive confines of Wayne Manor as if they were in a Tom and Jerry cartoon. His father Bruce (Luke Wilson) is essentially retired, having gotten rid of all crime in Gotham City. But he’s still on call, meaning that when he gets a message...

When Matt Reeves released :a[The Batman]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/the-batman/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'} in cinemas last year, it didn’t just unleash a brand new Dark Knight on the world – it began the building of a whole new Gotham. Bruce Wayne’s beloved city often shape-shifts along with the material, whether depicted as a gaudy neon-lit ‘toon-scape (the Joel Schumacher Bat-flicks), a thrumming contemporary urban environment (:a[The Dark Knight trilogy]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/features/dark-knight-trilogy-complete-story-of-christopher-nolan-batman/' target='blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'}), or festering with a scuzzy ‘70s New Yorkian grime (:a[Joker]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/joker/' target='blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'}). Given all of The Batman’s film noir influences, the Gotham of Reeves’ film is one rife with corruption – boasting grandiose architecture, an oppressive atmosphere, and packed with shady places for dark...

Todd McFarlane has unveiled the upcoming figures based around the much-maligned Batman & Robin, which brought the franchise back to camp territory in a big way. And while the movie itself may not have the devoted fanbase of, say, any of the others, the figures themselves do kick some ice!
In a recent Instagram video, Todd McFarlane showed off the Batman & Robin figures of Batman, Robin, Batgirl, and Poison Ivy. Already in boxes and marked as “production pieces”, the figures offer pretty darn good likenesses of the actors: “big, bad George Clooney” (McFarlane’s words), Chris O’Donnell, Alicia Silverstone, and Uma Thurman. McFarlane also praised the details in the outfits themselves, particularly ogling Poison Ivy’s dry brush and makeup details. He did, however, stop short of pointing out the Bat-nipples, but don’t worry, they are indeed present.

Dceu is well into its last stage with the upcoming release of ‘Aquaman and the Last Kingdom.’ Dcu is about to take over under Gunn’s and Safran’s leadership, and despite most of the projects that were previously set in the Dceu getting the axe, Gunn’s own ‘Peacemaker’ survived.
Gunn regularly provides updates regarding ‘Peacemaker’ development, and recently, he confirmed that the show’s second season will be a part of the Dcu, much like the show ‘Waller,’ a show about Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller that’s expected to be released in 2024.
He also confirmed that ‘Peacemaker’ season 2 is his next project after the work on ‘Superman: Legacy’ wraps up. Gunn also revealed that ‘Bat-Mite” will not be featured in ‘Peacekamer’ Season 2 following pretty heavy rumors that the character will indeed appear. The Caped Crusader. The Dark Knight. The World’s Greatest Detective. The Bat. He is vengeance. He is the night. He is, of course, Bruce Wayne – aka Batman. And for 84 years and counting, ever since his introduction in Detective Comics #27 on 30 March 1939, Bill Finger and Bob Kane’s Guardian of Gotham City continues to dominate popular culture.
A superhero with no actual superpowers (except for fat stacks of Benjamins), Bats is – in essence – just a man trying to turn his pain into something positive; a vigilante in a cowl and cape who’s capable of evolving with the times to be whatever kind of hero the moment asks for. It’s no wonder such a dynamic array of filmmakers – from Leslie H. Martinson to Tim Burton among many, many others – have been inspired to send up the Bat-signal on the big screen in live-action and animation over the years.

Throughout the mythos concerning the character of Bruce Wayne aka Batman, there is a strong theme of predestination. While made explicit in only a few tales of the Dark Knight throughout the character's 84-year existence, there exists the idea that the orphan Bruce Wayne was able to mold himself into the figure of Batman partially because his whole life prepared him to do just that, mentally if not also physically and emotionally.
1995's "Batman Forever," the third in Warner Bros. and producer Tim Burton's series of live-action adaptations of the character, is one of the stories of the Caped Crusader that highlights this theme in a big way. In the film, Bruce (played by Val Kilmer) is troubled by recurring waking nightmares that psychiatrist Dr. Chase Meridian (Nicole Kidman) deduces are actually repressed memories forcing their way into his conscious mind. In these visions, Bruce recalls the moments after his parents' untimely deaths,...

During the late 1950s, DC Comics struck gold with the release of a number of horror titles, notably House of Mystery and House of Horror. Both of these have since gained cult classic status thanks to the legendary creative teams spinning chilling narratives around beautiful blood-curling macabre panels—very in sync with the classic Hammer and Grindhouse horror movies. In later years, with restrictions imposed by the Cca (Comics Code Authority), the element of horror gradually waned in mainstream comics. It made a sporadic resurgence during the Bronze Age of comics during the late 1970s, and using their Vertigo imprint titles, DC managed to keep the dread alive, especially through The Hellblazer and Sandman titles. Therefore, in the post-Rebirth era, DC Comics’ creative team’s perceivable interest in rejuvenating the horror themes in even mainstream series like Detective Comics and DCeased must have elated horror fans like myself.

When you’re 13 everything carries high stakes: friendships, romances, who you’re seen with, which parties you’re invited to. Nothing has an adequate frame of reference, because everything is so new, and you’re not sure if you’re supposed to handle it all like the kid you just were or the adult you want to be. The new Netflix coming-of-age comedy You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah manages to convey this liminal state in a way that’s both deeply thoughtful and light as a feather.

Who has a better rogues gallery than Batman? Sure, the X-Men have some greats in Magneto, Stryker, and Mr. Sinister. And Spider-Man’s got the Green Goblin, Doc Ock, and Mysterio. But none of these baddies can touch the denizens of Arkham Asylum for their variety and malleability. Even if film adaptations keep going back to the same few characters, the psychologically twisted enemies offer room for multiple interpretations, allowing actors to find something different to each version.
But as great as they are, some Batman villains are better than others, allowing for a clear ranking of all the Bat-Baddies.
First, Batman may not have any limitations, but this list does. This ranking only covers live-action theatrical feature films. So we’re leaving off characters that never made it to the movies or those who appeared in an animated movie.

Superhero media is the fad these days, and most comic-book franchises are doubling down on their efforts to produce more related content with each passing year. However, there was a period when even the big two comic-book franchises, DC and Marvel, explored different genres like horror, western, space adventure, and fantasy in the comic-book medium, which were totally free from the continuity of mainline superhero-related series and had their own space to grow. Some of the most iconic stories and characters were introduced through these non-superhero comics, and they had their own separate audience to cater to as well.
Generally, as comic-book sales dwindled, most of the iconic titles ceased to exist and were integrated into mainline comics continuity; as a result, many of yesteryear’s popular characters were largely forgotten. In the recently released DC animated movie Justice League: Warworld, which is a part of the Tomorrowverse, the narrative...

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the movie being reviewed here wouldn't exist.
"Harley Quinn" breaks up our core team in its fourth season, dividing its time on scattered and somewhat unfocused storylines that never achieve the comedic heights of previous seasons. And yet, the show continues to be a delightful take on the DC universe, and when the Harley and Ivy stories finally merge, the season reaches the level of quality we've come to expect from the animated series, though it comes in too late.

Although Warner Bros. Discovery has cut quite a number of shows on Max, fans are thankful that Harley Quinn has survived. The series was renewed last year, and the new Nsfw trailer for Harley Quinn season 4 debuted today at San Diego Comic-Con.
With more sex, more drama, and more Harlivy, the Harley Quinn season 4 trailer offers everything fans have been hungry for. Picking up where the third season left off, the new season will find Harley giving the superhero thing a try, although she’s clearly struggling with the Bat Family’s “no killing” policy.

When you join the Bat family, you get a super Batsuit — that’s just the rule. So yes, Harley Quinn will be getting a new outfit in Season 4 of the Max animated series.
“Harley Quinn” supervising producers Ian Hamilton and Cecilia Aranovich Hamilton revealed that “of course” Kaley Cuoco’s infamous DC baddie will be getting her own Batsuit during their appearance at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday.
The challenge came in designing that suit.
“It was tricky, you know, because Harley’s, as you know, regular outfit is pretty revealing,” Aranovich Hamilton said. “You know, there’s not a lot of coverage. So you think what she’s doing in the Bat family, you know, her costume will be a little more structured, will have more coverage, not showing so much skin.”
That said, Harley always has her own flair, and her Batsuit will be no exception.

The chaotic adventures of Joker’s psychopathic girlfriend and partner in crime, Harley Quinn are set to come out soon, as the DC animated black comedy superhero show’s Season 4 is marked for a July release.
The last season of ‘Harley Quinn’ began going deeper into her newly branded romantic relationship with Poison Ivy. When the season ended, Harley joined the Bat-Family while Ivy was poised to lead the Legion of Doom. In a funny twist, Batgirl is now the head of the Bat-Family as Bruce Wayne ended up being arrested for tax evasion.
Talking about the upcoming season and Harley’s new heroic role in the show with TVLine, showrunner Justin Halpern said, quoted by Collider: “Things are so binary in the superhero world. The piece contains major spoilers for “The Flash,” now in theaters.
This time, he avoided the Bat nipples.
In the final moments of “The Flash,” none other than George Clooney makes a shocking appearance as Bruce Wayne, a cheeky bit of stunt casting that brought Clooney back to the superhero franchise 26 years after his infamous stint as the Caped Crusader in “Batman & Robin.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Clooney’s appearance was part of reshoots conducted on the film earlier this year after James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Films from the prior regime. The initial incarnation of the finale included “The Flash” stars Michael Keaton and Sasha Calle, who, respectively, played Batman and Supergirl in the film but died fighting back against General Zod (Michael Shannon) in the main story. But that ending was scrapped when the corporate leadership changed last year, and a second attempt put together Calle,...

This article contains major spoilers for The Flash.
Holy revolving door, Batman! The Caped Crusader has been portrayed by more actors on the big screen than any other superhero in history. Most of them have lasted for just one film. After The Dark Knight Rises, Christian Bale became the first man to have played Bruce Wayne and his alter-ego more than twice on the silver screen. He didn’t have much competition – Michael Keaton was the only other actor to reprise the role at the time.
But Ben Affleck has now beat Bale for appearances as Batman on the big screen due to his return in The Flash movie, making that fourth time Affleck has donned the cape and cowl. Sure, these aren’t movies starring the Caped Crusader but they still count! Meanwhile, Keaton ties Bale for three appearances, with a much heftier role in The Flash than Affleck.

It’s official: Andy Muschietti is going to the Batcave.
Ahead of the release of his superhero movie The Flash, Muschietti has decided to keep his feet firmly in the land of DC.
Muschietti finalized a deal to direct The Brave and the Bold, the feature project that will introduce a new big-screen version of Batman, one that will fit into the expansive universe being developed by DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran.
The involvement has been whispered about for several weeks. Muschietti, who has been on the Flash press tour, has been coy about his connection. But a deal was finally closed this week, according to a source, very conveniently timed to the opening of his movie.
“We saw The Flash even before taking the reins at DC Studios, and knew we were in the hands of not only a visionary director but a massive DC fan,...
