Taylor Character attributes her early exposure to house music legends like Frankie Knuckles and CeCe Peniston to her late mother. When Character, known professionally as HoneyLuv, decided to leave her Navy drone mechanic job in 2020 and pursue music full time, she says her mother was skeptical at first. But as a house head herself, her mother began to appreciate HoneyLuv’s craft.
Now, as HoneyLuv compares those classic cuts from the Eighties and Nineties to the latest house music releases, she says there’s something missing.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert premiered to a rapturous, midnight-screening reception at Cannes on May 15, 1994. The tart, feel-good comedy follows a trio of Sydney drag queens — Terrence Stamp, Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce — who travel by bus (that’s Priscilla) to a gig in the Outback, finding their way into hijinks and eye-popping outfits along the way. The film became a crossover sensation and even won an Oscar for its costumes (this despite having a costume budget of approximately $5,000). Its writer-director Stephan Elliott joins THR‘s It Happened in Hollywood podcast this week to reveal all about this making of the comedy classic on the cusp of its 30th birthday. Here are five facinating takeaways from the episode:
Guy Pearce Was Desperate to Shed his Soap Opera Image

‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’: Marcia Marcia Marcia on if She Thought Her Lip-Sync Was Worth a Double Shantay
RuPaul’s Drag Race season 15 has been a landmark season with some incredible lip syncs. Fan-favorite queens Marcia Marcia Marcia and Anetra lip-synced to “Boss B****” by Doja Cat in one of the most unforgettable performances in the show’s history. When reflecting on her elimination, Marcia considered whether she deserved to stay in a double shantay.

The dawn of RuPaul’s Drag Race at the turn of the 2010s marked the beginning of drag’s proliferation in the mainstream and on television. Drag Race has exploded all over the world with over a dozen (and counting) international franchises, and has inspired the creation of new shows centered around drag. Queen of the Universe is one of these shows, combining drag with live singing in a Drag Race-meets-American Idol-style competition. And when Queen of the Universe returns for its second season on Paramount+ in March 2023, two Drag Race alumnae will be competing for the crown.

The LALAPaRuZa lip sync smackdown has become one of RuPaul’s Drag Race‘s most iconic challenges, as queens compete against each other in jaw-dropping lip syncs to keep their spot in the competition. Season 15 of Drag Race had a larger-than-life LALAPaRuZa, with queens performing to songs such as Anitta‘s “Boys Don’t Cry” and Joan Jett’s “Do You Wanna Touch Me.” Some of the songs in the lip sync tournament have been used on Drag Race in the past.

“Firefly Lane” Season 2 has arrived, and with it comes another loaded lineup of signature songs for the seventies, eighties, nineties and early 2000s. Throughout the shifts between three separate timelines in Tully and Kate’s friendship, needle drops help distinguish which part of their lives we’re watching, especially when it gets confusing between the older versions of Kate Mularkey Ryan (Sarah Chalke) and Tully Hart (Katherine Heigl). Kristin Hannah’s 400+ page novel off of which the television show is based uses certain songs and lyrics to introduce the new decades, or parts of the book, like Abba’s “Dancing Queen,” Pat Benatar’s “Love Is a Battlefield” and more.
Season 2 boasts two Whitney Houston songs — “I’m Every Woman” and “How Will I Know” — Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors,” The Knack’s “My Sharona,” Chaka Khan’s “Ain’t Nobody” and “Closer to Fine” by The Indigo Girls.

Nominees, Hollywood power brokers and frightened publicists once again gathered inside Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater, a first since 2019, but we commoners vowed to watch all the action and inevitable Don’t Worry Darling jokes unfold on the medium du jour — using the cable subscriptions we absolutely pay for ourselves and not the log-ins we’ve stolen from our parents.
The last time the TV industry set aside an evening to congratulate itself, Ted Lasso, The Crown and The Queen’s Gambit were the big winners. But a lot has changed in a year. After two years of speculation, Taraji P. Henson confirmed she's dating Kelvin Hayden. The Empire star verified the relationship status during an episode of Essence's podcast "Yes, Girl." After hearing Henson briefly mention "my man" at the top of the interview, the hosts revisited the topic and asked her about her rumored beau. "I'm very happy. Everything is coming together," the Proud Mary star said before spilling the tea. "I'm happy in my personal life." The Hidden Figures actress then broke out singing, "Finally! It has happened to me,"—quoting CeCe Peniston's song "Finally." "It was all over The Shade Room...

"The Silence of the Lambs" This is definitely my favorite Best Picture-winning horror movie featuring Chris Isaak in a supporting role. Let's just think about the glamor of 1991 for a minute: "Point Break" occurred. Kate Nelligan was in whatever movie she wanted. CeCe Peniston was a reigning pop star, which is important because her last name has "penis" in it. And "Silence of the Lambs" was an ominous and unconventional movie that everyone agreed was fantastic. Anthony Hopkins is in "Silence of the Lambs" for less than 20 minutes but his performance lingers far after the credits roll. Jodie Foster is charismatic and august as Clarice Starling, who is no mood for fava beans by the time the movie is over. "Rain Man" I keep pretending I'm incapable of enjoying Tom Cruise in movies anymore, yet "Rain Man" is about as timeless and likable as a 1988 drama is allowed to be.

Maternity Syndrome: Tierney’s Undefined Comedy Explores Notions of Motherhood
What begins as a concept full of pleasurably subversive possibilities quickly turns into yet another diluted tale of female arrested development in Preggoland, revolving around an emotionally stunted woman who learns an important lesson in the nick of time, thereby exponentially enhancing her own life experience and those in her orbit. Though it’s not as obnoxiously adolescent as its Diablo Cody inspired title suggests, actress turned screenwriter Sonja Bennett’s screenplay fails to use the concept to explore the actual issues underlying her character’s inability to successfully complete the normal trajectory of her sanctioned heteronormative peer group. And so, Jacob Tiernay‘s fourth feature film becomes another one of those wanly charming comedies about how to curb one’s drifting, wayward attitude in order to gain re-admittance into the fold.

There’s a sight gag at a pivotal moment in Preggoland involving a baby shower, a dog, operatic music and Jello that immediately registers as one of the more inspired comedic set-ups in recent memory. It is also one of the very few gags that transcends the film’s sitcom trappings while also finessing the outrageous and the darkly funny, two tones that Jacob Tierney’s film aims for yet routinely misses. A few months from now, when looking back at Preggoland – not to be confused with Prego, another film coming out in limited release this week – it will be the first (and likely only) scene that comes to mind.

Kevin still wants to have it both ways, sleeping with Patrick but living with John, ostensibly to not hurt John’s feelings. Simon Cowell puts early X Factor favourite Lola Saunders's position in the competition in danger tonight when he questions her ability to perform on the biggest stage.
Saunders, who wowed the judges at her first two auditions, performs a cover of 'Finally' by CeCe Peniston, but the shaky rendition gets a muted response from the panel.
Watch Lola Saunders's first audition:
Ultimately, her fate in the Six Chair Challenge and a spot at Judges' Houses rests with Cheryl Fernandez-Versini. However, Mel B, Louis Walsh and most importantly Simon Cowell suggest that she hasn't done enough to justify getting any further on the show.
"Today, I think you could have done a lot better. That was good, but I know you have a lot more inside you," said Walsh.
"I think you could have done a lot better," adds a disappointed Mel B.
Cowell is the most critical, commenting:...

After Mary J Blige joined Disclosure onstage at Terminal 5 to perform vocals for a remix of their song "F for You," it was only a matter of time before the full version appeared. The song is off of the band's "awfully fun, and awfully good" debut album, Settle, and the Blige remix has the diva ditching the "No More Drama" ballads, maybe even making her way toward a modern day CeCe Peniston dancehall lifestyle. It works, mostly because Mary J. can sing the hell out of anything.

American Idol‘s Season 11 Top 12 are set to cover the frequently traversed theme of “Songs From the Year You Were Born” tonight. (Way to cook up new and exciting ideas, Uncle Nigel)! I’m already saying a novena that Jessica Sanchez won’t get stuck in the Thia Megia ghetto (aka singing “Colors Of The Wind”) and that Joshua Ledet won’t be offering up Idol‘s eighth rendition of “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” in 11 seasons. Above you can see Adele in the latest issue of British Vogue, and Towleroad has a couple of vids of her appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show, in which she hints that she may be performing the next Bond theme, which would be cool beyond belief, especially if it's a throwback to the Shirley Bassey years. Happy 67th Birthday to Swoosie Kurtz, Happy 64th Birthday to Jane Curtin, and Happy 42nd Birthday to one of the all-time great dance divas, Ce Ce Peniston. Time to name your top five Ce Ce songs! Here are mine: 5. "Inside That I Cried" 4. "We Got A Love Thang" 3. "I'm In The Mood" 2. "Finally" 1. "Keep on Walkin".

NBC / Universal Nick Cannon and Avril Lavigne on “America’s Got Talent”
After two hours of terrific performances on last night’s “America’s Got Talent,” the fate of the first 12 performers was left in the hands of the audience. Voting began promptly after the end of Tuesday’s show, and with the exception of one act, all of Wednesday’s winners were determined by the numbers of supporters who called or texted their choices. And as the show started,...

American Idol has entered the MySpace era (aka 2006), and is tapping into the powerful musical legacies of Toni Basil, Billy Ray Cyrus, and the Crash Test Dummies. Nope, I’m not pulling your leg. Idol producers will then invite a select number of online auditioners...
