Exclusive: Winter State Entertainment on Tuesday announced two feature docs on NFL Hall of Famer Mel Blount and MLB icon Tommy John that will lead its forthcoming slate, having wrapped principal photography on each right before the launch of the WGA strike.
The first film, Mel Blount: Whatever It Takes, on longtime Pittsburgh Steeler Blount, will offer a deep dive into his life journey, from his arduous beginning in a segregated Vidalia, Georgia to getting drafted in the 3rd round by the struggling Steelers, to the next 14 years, where he won four championships and cemented himself as the best at his position as cornerback. Upon retirement, Blount shifted his focus towards kids who were stuck in the system, opening two youth homes to give them a chance to turn their lives around, even when the community and KKK pushed back against him. Now, 40 years later, Blount has afforded this opportunity to hundreds.

Franco Harris, the Hall of Fame running back who made “the Immaculate Reception” — voted the NFL’s greatest play of all time — and won four Super Bowls with the Pittsburgh Steelers, died early Wednesday. He was 72. His son told the Associated Press that Harris died overnight but did not give other details.
Fifty years ago this week, Harris was a rookie when he caught “The Immaculate Reception” in a playoff game against the Oakland Raiders. Pittsburgh was trailing 7-6 with time running out when quarterback Terry Bradshaw’s desperation pass deflected off either Steelers receiver Frenchy Fuqua and/or Raiders defender Jack Tatum. Harris caught the ball inches from the ground and scampered more than 40 yards down the sideline for a touchdown as time wound down.

The deflected pass that Pittsburgh Steeler running back Franco Harris miraculously caught for a touchdown and the first playoff victory in his team’s existence has been voted the greatest play in National Football League history.
A nationwide panel of 68 media members gave that 1972 play by Harris 3,270 points and 39 first-place votes. Second was Dwight Clark’s Td catch from Joe Montana that lifted San Francisco past Dallas to win the 1981 Nfc championship, although that play got only four first-place votes.
The runner-up in first-place votes among media members was David Tyree’s “Helmet Catch” for the Giants in their upset of the New England Patriots in the 2008 Super Bowl.
The poll is part of the NFL’s ongoing celebration of its 100th anniversary.

On the third season premiere of This Is Us, most of the focus is on the Pearson clan in the past, the present day, and (briefly and mysteriously) the future. But that's not how the episode begins. Instead, the Sept. 26 episode kicks off (pun intended) with a random football player in the 1970s, whose uniform reveals his name to be "Harris." If you're one of the viewers who was a bit baffled when the character doesn't turn out to be some significant person in the Pearsons' circle, well, wonder no more. We've got all the info on Franco Harris, the real-life Pittsburgh Steelers player who's a downright sports legend.
As every This Is Us fan knows well, football - and the Steelers specifically - is very important to the Pearson family, so it seems only fitting that a real-life football reference has finally made its way into the series. Although...

Raise your hand if you think Jack and Rebecca Pearson's relationship is a little too perfect.
Well, that wasn't always the case. In fact, This Is Us Season 3 Episode 1 reveals that the first date of everyone's favorite Otp was quite abysmal.
When Jack first laid his eyes on Rebecca, he knew that she was "the girl." After two seasons of epic Jack and Rebecca moments, it would have been easy to assume that once again Jack swept Rebecca off her feet. It turns out, their first date was super awkward. Didn't think Jack and Rebecca were relatable? Think again!
For the first time since meeting him, This Is Us fans learned from Jack what not to do. For example, don't only bring nine dollars on a first date when you are trying to impress a girl. Also, don't shut down every conversation topic the girl tries to bring up.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for the “This Is Us” Season 3 premiere, Episode 1, “Nine Bucks.”]
During the hourlong return of “This Is Us,” two scenes stand out in terms of what’s working and what’s not. On the heartening side — surprise, surprise — it’s Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Deja (Lyric Ross). Using his birthday as reason for reflection, the fan and family favorite drives his prospective daughter to his father’s old home. There, he tells her his life has been defined by being adopted, and he asks her to choose whether or not she would like to officially be made a part of his family.
It’s a great speech, one Randall later admits to rehearsing, but it doesn’t go as planned. Deja isn’t honored or moved by Randall letting her choose; she’s pissed that he’s reducing her story to mimic his own. “Don’t tell me we’re the same,...

Although he's best known for bringing life to the modern zombie with Night of the Living Dead and its sequels, filmmaker George A. Since the days of Walter Payton, Franco Harris, and Barry Sanders, the Running Back has evolved into one of the best if not the best athlete on the field today. A combination of speed, power, and agility are characteristics of the best running backs on the professional and college level today. Some of the most prolific players in football history excelled as Heisman Trophy winners and NFL MVPs, without them, football would be a much different sport than we know it as today.
Here are five of the best Running Backs in College Football who will leave defenses in the dust in 2014:
Honorable Mentions:
Travis Greene, Bowling Green (279 carries, 1,594 yards, 11 TDs)
-The former Wide Receiver found his calling in the backfield for the Falcons in 2013, rushing for 1,594 yards, good for 11th nationally and 2nd in the Mid American Conference this year.

Perfection is more or less impossible, even in the world of sports. Except for a select few instances, all streaks come to an end and all records fall. But in professional football, one accomplishment has stood the test of time, as the Miami Dolphins are the only team in the history of the NFL to have a completely undefeated season. On this day in 1973, the Dolphins beat the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl VII to win the championship and finish their season with 17 wins and no losses.
The Dolphins' unbeaten run was lead by coach Don Shula, quarterbacks Bob Griese and Earl Morrall (Griese hurt his ankle a third of the way through the season) and running backs Larry Csonka and Jim Kiick. None of those headliners were truly spectacular players, but their workmanlike approach under Shula's offensive system made them a formidable force on the field. They truly dominated on defense,...

For any sports fan, there are a handful of images or sequences that are permanently etched in his or her memory. There's Willie Mays' incredible over-the-shoulder catch, Bill Buckner's World Series faux pas in 1986, the amazing Christian Laettner buzzer-beater in the 1992 Ncaa basketball tournament — these are all incredible moments that live on courtesy of countless highlight reels and compilations. One of the most notorious of these is the play that became known as the "Immaculate Reception," which occurred on this day in 1972 in a game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Oakland Raiders.
In the closing seconds of a playoff game and trailing 7-6, Pittsburgh quarterback Terry Bradshaw threw a desperation pass that was intended for halfback Frenchy Fuqua. As Fuqua went to catch the ball, he collided with Oakland defender Jack Tatum. The impact caused the ball to ricochet backwards in a long arc. Rookie running back Franco Harris...
