Lily Gladstone made Oscar history as the first Native American to be nominated in the Best Actress category for her role in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.” While we thought she would try her luck in the featured category, she opted to campaign in lead. Her importance to the plot suggests that she is a co-star, despite her screen-time (especially in the second half of the film and compared to that of Leonardo DiCaprio).
It isn’t often that a performance that could go supporting is campaigned as a lead, but it’s happened in the past – even the very recent past.
SEEOscar Experts say it’s Emma Stone vs. Lily Gladstone for Best Actress

Bye-bye, Peak TV. After more than a decade of unprecedented production growth, the international television industry is bracing for an era of tighter budgets and more bean counting.
“Instead of subscriber growth at all costs, now the focus is on production and investment and getting the balance sheet right,” says Cathy Payne, CEO of Banijay Rights, the sales arm of the production giant behind reality TV hits Big Brother and high-end dramas Peaky Blinders and Black Mirror. “I hate using the phrase because everyone says it, but the focus now is on ‘fewer, better, bigger shows.’ ”
The variety of shows on offer at this year’s global TV market in Cannes, MIPCOM, suggests every buyer, at every budget, should find something to fill their slots. And while THR’s annual hot list of the market’s best new drama series ranges from a by-the-book NBC procedural to an erotic comedy...

I do have a pretty poor reason for wanting to watch Home Sweet Home: Where Evil Lives. At least initially anyway because the reason being is that it holds the same title (Home Sweet Home) as the first book I wrote and released. Obviously, I then had a quick read of the synopsis and discovered that this a film that is shot in one-shot, real-time, and I got even more excited.
It’s not featured a whole lot in the genre but I love films that are shot with one shot. It seems like an incredibly difficult thing to achieve and it always impresses me. The script (and obviously the performances) have to be near perfect. Silent House and the exceptional One Cut of the Dead, have proved that it can absolutely work in horror.

Filmmaker Matthew Vaughn’s “The King’s Man” is truly insane. That is undeniable. The prequel to the “Kingsman” films is set during World War I and showcases the events leading to the foundation of the Kingsman private spy organization. But it’s also so much more. It’s a wild, at times incredibly violent period action movie that fuses real-life figures with made up scenarios, with the whole thing designed for maximum entertainment. Ralph Fiennes stars as Orlando Oxford, the Duke of Oxford who, amongst other things, is sent on a mission to kill mad monk Rasputin (Rhys Ifans) and thwart the evil intentions of a shadowy organization whose orders are given by the sinister figure known only as The Shepherd. Insane right?

Other upcoming titles include Leander Haussmann’s highly anticipated Cold War laffer “A Stasi Comedy,” which Constantin Film is set to release next year. German cinema looks set for an exciting year with forthcoming works that include a high-profile Cannes selection celebrating one of Germany’s most iconic filmmakers, an expressionistic thriller set in 1920s Vienna, a tale of Nazi seduction and a new Thomas Mann adaptation.
The Covid-19 pandemic dashed the excitement of a splashy Cannes premiere for Oskar Roehler’s “Enfant Terrible,” part of the festival’s Official Selection, but the film is nevertheless certain to generate buzz with its portrayal of legendary filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and his turbulent film career that spanned 1969 to 1982.
In making the film, Roehler found inspiration in Fassbinder’s own work.
“We didn’t want to do your standard biopic,” says producer Markus Zimmer, managing director of Bavaria Filmproduktion. “I think we did come very close to what Fassbinder would have made out of his own life. We tried to be in line with the artistic...

Fact-based “The Wolf of Wall Street” won criticism from some quarters for seeming to revel in its protagonist’s sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle, while barely chiding him for the predatory, large-scale financial fraud that funded it. Cuneyt Kaya’s new “Rising High” offers a similar disconnect in its fictive tale of bold chicanery in the realm of high-end real estate, treating its heroes’ climb to ill-gotten wealth as a vicarious thrill ride, with scant attention paid to the victims they presumably bankrupt.
This new Netflix offering from Germany is slick and energetic. But even as a mostly less-than-serious (let alone credible) criminal caper, it has a distinctly second-hand feel. This breezy German comedy-thriller follows an unscrupulous wheeler-dealer with an illegal get-rich-quick scheme
This breezy, sleazy comedy-thriller from Germany has as its original title Betonrausch: literally, concrete-drunk or concrete-crazy – the state of ecstasy induced by speculating in the housing market and making money apparently out of nothing and nowhere. The star is David Kross, who played the seduced boy opposite Kate Winslet in The Reader and Manchester City’s famous injured footballer Bert Trautmann in the recent film The Keeper.

On paper, the plight of a pair of families fleeing 1979’s East Germany in a hot air balloon sounds like fabricated fodder for a spy novel. But as implausible as it sounds, this “The Mysterious Island”-esque grand escape from Deutschland’s then walled-in, oppressive slice really did happen. And nearly four decades after being the subject of Disney’s “Night Crossing,” it is now a tale told in small-screen comedian Michael Bully Herbig’s “Balloon,” a competently made political thriller that sadly mines for suspense in all the wrong places.
Still, “Balloon” is decent entertainment to a degree, and that is mostly thanks to its handsome production values. The quaint environs and row houses of Thuringia as well as the era’s eye-popping costumes by Lisy Christl — well-tailored clothes and floral-heavy fabrics with traces of ’70s cool — are admittedly easy on the eyes. But considering the film’s stretched...

Berlin-based Picture Tree International (Pti) has acquired global sales rights to Leander Haussmann’s highly anticipated East German laffer “A Stasi Comedy.”
Set in the early 1980s, the film centers on East Germany’s infamous state security service, the Staatssicherheitsdienst or Stasi, and young agent Ludger, played by David Kross, who is sent to infiltrate the counterculture scene in East Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg district, home to artists, bohemians and free-thinking radicals. Decades later, Ludger is confronted with the possibility of his secret Stasi past coming to light.
Written and directed by Haussmann, “A Stasi Comedy” is the third installment in the celebrated filmmaker’s East German-themed comedy trilogy that began with “Sonnenallee” (“Sun Alley”) in 2000 and followed with “Nva” in 2004.

‘Defend, Conserve, Protect.’
Disney’s The Lion King roared through its second weekend in Australia as the studio smashed its own annual global box office record set in 2016 last weekend.
Meanwhile Defend, Conserve, Protect, Stephen Amis’ feature doc which examines the long-running campaign to stop Japanese fishermen killing whales in the Southern Ocean, opened on seven screens in limited sessions.
Narrated by Dan Aykroyd and produced by Amis, Sea Shepherd Australia MD Jeff Hansen and Sea Shepherd colleague Omar Todd, the film fetched an estimated $7,200 but had already netted $37,000 from about 40 advance screenings and festivals.
The executive producer, Label Distribution’s Tait Brady, is happy with the reviews and media coverage and says the film will play through the end of the year with screenings for activists and community groups, after which he will negotiate ancillary deals.
He offered the film to several sales agents but they were wary of the anti-whaling stance.

"We can make it with your help." Studiocanal has debuted an official UK trailer for a German thriller titled Balloon, or simply Ballon in German. The film tells the true story of the Strelzyk and Wetzel families, who built their own hot air balloon and flew from the Gdr to West Germany in the late 1970s when the country was divided. Günter Wetzel, played by David Kross, was inspired by a magazine article about the balloon show in Albuquerque, New Mexico. "While I’m happy now that we took that decision, if I had the knowledge I have now I wouldn’t do it, because it was so dangerous, but I didn’t recognise that then," he says (via The Guardian). The full cast includes Friedrich Mücke, Karoline Schuch, Alicia von Rittberg, Thomas Kretschmann, Jonas Holdenrieder, Tilman Döbler, and Till Patz. That cool shot with the patchwork colors of the balloon lighting up is gorgeous,...

Marcus H. Rosenmüller’s The Keeper tells the extraordinary true story of Bert Trautmann (David Kross), a former German prisoner of war who stayed in Britain after the end of World War Two and went on to become one of Manchester City football club’s most respected and loved players. Trautmann, who fought prejudice and backlash from those who objected to his signing as goalkeeper, later gained somewhat of a legendary status with supporters after famously playing in the 1956 Fa cup final with a broken neck, refusing to leave his post until the final whistle of the match was blown.

As a self-professed film and football fanatic, it’s fair to say that The Keeper is a film for me – though certainly one that should appeal to anyone, such is the strength of this quite remarkable take. It’s a biopic of former Manchester City goalkeeper Bert Trautmann, who was at one stage a German prisoner of war. Played here by David Kross, we sat down with the actor, alongside Freya Mavor, who plays his wife Margaret, to discuss this drama.
The pair comment on the pressure that derives from playing real life people who will have family members still around watching this film, and how great the two characters were for them to get their teeth stuck into. They also talk about collaborating with director Marcus H. Rosenmuller, while we place the film in a contemporary context, as one that celebrates love between two Europeans, which feels particularly pertinent...

The 69th Berlinale opened with a 1920s-style serenade dedicated to Kosslick by popular German singer Max Raabe and entertainer Anke Engelke, who also hosted the ceremony.
Monika Grütters, Germany’s culture and media commissioner, praised Kosslick for his 18 years at the head of one of the world’s largest film festivals.

Directed with mainstream efficiency but not a lot of originality by Munich-born Markus Goller, whose Friendship! Exclusive: Film about German goalkeeper picked up by Beta Cinema.
Beta Cinema has come on board to handle world sales on Trautmann, the long-gestating biopic of Nazi soldier turned English football hero Bert Trautmann.
Trautmann was one of the larger-than-life personalities of post-war European sport: a former Nazi paratrooper who became a hero as the world’s most famous goalkeeper of his time – not in his home country, but on the playing fields of his former enemy. He famously broke his neck in the 1956 Fa Cup Final but kept on playing.
The film, the first English-language feature for German director Marcus H Rosenmueller (Grave Decisions), is now fully financed and will shoot later this summer.
German actor David Kross (The Reader) is still on board to play Trautmann while UK actress Freya Mavor (The Sense Of An Ending) has been cast as the love of his life, Margaret, who was the daughter of his English coach.

The Little Witch (Die Kleine Hexe) will star German actress Karoline Herfurth and reunite the production team behind local box office hit Heidi.
Studiocanal is to co-produce and handle world sales on the first German live-action film adaptation of Otfried Preussler’s children’s classic The Little Witch (Die Kleine Hexe).
Published in 1957, Preussler’s tale centres on a witch who is a mere one hundred and twenty-seven years old and thus deemed too young to be allowed to dance with the others on the Hill of Witches during Walpurgis Night (30 April).

The reformed draft budget will now be put to vote at the European Parliament.
Members of the European Parliament’s Budget Committee voted this morning (Tuesday) to reverse cuts to Creative Europe’s budget for 2016 as proposed by the European Council.
Voting on the motion for resolution concerning the European Commission’s 2016 draft budget, the MEPs passed an amendment tabled by deputy Jean-Paul Denanot, calling for an increase by $12m (€10.5m) for Creative Europe’s Culture and Media sub-programmes, including the multimedia actions and the Cultural and Creative Sectors Guarantee Facility, which is planned to start operating from next year.
According to Denanot, this increase is deemed “necessary” given the programmes’ “important role in supporting cultural and creative industries that represent key European values.”
The MEPs’ budgetary amendments and the accompanying resolution for the 2016 draft budget will now be put to the plenary vote at the European Parliament later this month.
