A judge has sided with Netflix in a legal conflict launched by a famous diver, who claimed that a movie inspired by his life falsely accused him of murder.
Judge Bruce G. Iwasaki granted Netflix’s motion to throw out the lawsuit Tuesday, finding that the diver, Pipin Ferreras, could not prove that the fictional film was about him.
“No Limit” was released on Netflix in September 2022. It tells a story “inspired by real events” of a couple, Pascal Gautier and Roxana Aubrey, who engage in free diving, plunging to extreme depths without an oxygen supply. Roxana dies on a record attempt, with the clear implication that Pascal has sabotaged her equipment.
Ferreras sued for defamation last year, alleging that the film amounted to an accusation that he had killed his wife. Audrey Mestre drowned during a free dive in 2002. Ferreras, who supervised the dive, has since faced intense criticism over his safety practices.

Netflix was sued on Wednesday over “No Limit,” a fictionalized film that suggests a free diver deliberately killed his wife in a diving incident.
The French-language film is based on the true story of Francisco “Pipin” Ferreras and his wife, Audrey Mestre. They were a celebrity couple within the world of free diving, an extreme sport in which divers descend hundreds of feet without oxygen.
Mestre drowned while attempting a dive in the Dominican Republic in 2002, after the device that was supposed to carry her to the surface malfunctioned.
The film tells the story of “Pascal Gautier” and “Roxana Aubrey,” a fictionalized version of the couple. Gautier is depicted as abusive and jealous of Aubrey’s success. In the climactic scene, the film strongly implies that Gautier sabotaged her compressed air tank, leaving it without enough air to bring her to the surface.

After a couple of lean years, Berlin is ready to feast.
Its European Film Market kicks off on Thursday, Feb. 16 with hundreds of finished films and scores of new packages and projects for every cinematic taste and budget. Even as sellers are still setting up their stands at the EFM’s Martin Gropius Bau headquarters, new packages continue to come thick and fast.
Black Bear International, which helped close a deal with Lionsgate (for domestic) and Amazon (for multiple international territories) for Guy Ritchie’s World War II actioner The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare on the eve of Berlin, added the buzzy musical project Fred & Ginger, about Hollywood dance legends Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, played by Jamie Bell and Margaret Qualley, to its EFM slate. Black Bear will handle international sales of the project, previously at Amazon, with UTA Independent Film Group and 30West co-repping the U.S.

Adrian Lyne’s 1990 film Jacob’s Ladder is one of those films you really shouldn’t touch. It remains one of the best examples of psychological horror with its unforgettably eerie imagery and a story that makes you question everything that’s happening on screen until it’s over. As a film, it’s also been fully embraced by the horror game community as it’s heavily influenced Silent Hill and so many others. Seriously, no one should have touched this movie. But here we are, almost 20 years later and director David M. Rosenthal is taking a crack at it whether we want it or not. While I can’t say I liked this movie, Rosenthal changes the story enough so it doesn’t feel like a lazy remake, but it’s just...

It’s understandable that someone would want to remake “Jacob’s Ladder,” Adrian Lyne’s 1990 head-trip thriller about a Vietnam veteran haunted by fragmentary nightmare visions. I was far from alone in finding the original to be an overwrought but rather thin “psychological” horror film that was more punishing than pleasurable. And it wasn’t exactly a hit, grossing just $26 million in the U.S. Yet it’s easy to see why “Jacob’s Ladder,” over the years, became a bit of a cult movie. It has some astonishing bad-acid-trip imagery, and consumed late at night it conjures a certain random hallucinatory relentlessness that anticipates the throw-demons-at-the-wall-and-see-if-they-stick scare-cinema tactics of the digital era.
That’s why you’d expect a remake of “Jacob’s Ladder” to come out of the glossy megaplex fear processor, the one that gave us all those remake/sequels to “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre,” “The Thing,...

Watching Adrian Lyne’s classic “Jacob’s Ladder” raises a lot of complex psychological and spiritual questions. The film stars Tim Robbins as a Vietnam veteran who suffers from horrifying visions and persecution nightmares, but Lyne’s film dares to ask if nightmares are, perhaps, beautiful experiences viewed from the wrong angle. What is existential truth? What is sanity? What is the difference, if any, between heaven and hell?
David M. Rosenthal’s remake of “Jacob’s Ladder” doesn’t have the same ambition as Lyne’s 1990 film, but it does re-use much of the same imagery to tell a vaguely similar story. Michael Ealy stars as Jacob Singer, a veteran who lost his brother in Afghanistan, and now works at a V.A. hospital in Atlanta. When he’s not helping other traumatized veterans get pharmaceutical help for their conditions, he’s having flashbacks of his own.

When it was released in 1990, director Adrian Lynne’s “Jacob’s Ladder” was a moderately successful film that grew a cult following; with time, it even influenced other works, including the horror franchise “Silent Hill.” The idea of starring in a remake of a film with such a dedicated fanbase might be daunting for any actor. But it wasn’t for Michael Ealy, who leads director David M. Rosenthal’s reimagining of the 1990 psychological thriller.
“I had zero inhibitions about remaking it because, first of all, while the original film became a cult favorite over time, it wasn’t exactly ‘Jaws’ when it came out, in terms of box office and reviews,” said Ealy. “When I read the script for our version, it was clear that we weren’t doing a shot-for-shot remake or anything even close to that. “You’ll see devils tearing your life apart.”
We’ve been hearing about director David M. Rosenthal‘s remake of Jacob’s Ladder for some time now. Well, the trailer for the film has been released, and while it looks like an intense and haunting film, it doesn’t look as good as the original 1990 movie.
In this version of the film, "After losing his brother in combat, Jacob Singer returns home from Afghanistan — only to be pulled into a mind-twisting state of paranoia. Singer soon realizes that his sibling is alive but life is not what it seems."
The new film tells a different story set in a different setting and it has a fresh twist, but as you’ll see, the nightmarish imagery is similar.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen the classic 1990 psychological horror film Jacob’s Ladder, partially because I’m not a huge fan of Tim Robbins’ acting. Also, there’s a lotta movies out there, ya know? But hey, I respect it as a greatly made film, a comment on the toll the Vietnam War took on its participants, and the fragility of the human condition. So, it was inevitable that it would be remade by the hungry producers of today’s cynical media landscape and now, we have the first trailer for it.
The plot, this time around, has Jacob Singer (Michael Ealy), now an Afghanistan veteran, experiencing hallucinations. He’s not alone though, as his brother Issac (Jesse Williams), who appeared to die on the operating table in the Middle East, turns back up on the family’s doorstep, unharmed but unhinged. But is this really Jacob’s brother?...

Did some of this week's trailer offerings pass you by?
Each week usually brings a fresh batch of trailers designed to lure us into coughing up a bit of cash to see some forthcoming attractions. Sometimes they do the job quite nicely, and for sure there's nothing quite as exciting as a film that comes out of nowhere with a brilliant trailer that takes you from "ehh" to "okay, I'm in" in less than three minutes.
We have to admit, sometimes we miss those old school trailers with the gravelly voiceovers. "It Was A Time Of War" that sort of thing. The ones that didn't seem to show you half the movie. A whole lot of trailers nowadays seem to be cut the same way, too - if you notice that obligatory bass drop once, you'll probably notice it forever - but we still eat them up regardless.

In the original, scripted by Bruce Joel Rubin, the protagonist is a Vietnam veteran whose experiences prior to and during the war result in fragmented flashbacks and bizarre hallucinations that continue to haunt him, as he desperately tries to get to the bottom of it all. Although not a box office hit ($26 million gross on a $25 million budget), the film went on to achieve cult hit status.
First announced in 2013, and finally shot in 2016, Ld Entertainment’s remake has remained mostly shrouded in secrecy. The production company’s goal was to produce more of an homage,...

Midnight Meat Train, The Prodigy, and Pet Sematary writer Jeff Buhler has been developing a remake of the 1990 psychological horror thriller, Jacob’s Ladder since 2013. Production on the film has been delayed and in a recent interview with Rue Morgue, he explains why he thinks the film has been put on hold, saying:
"I think [the delay] was because the market had a whole handful of these movies—and maybe I inadvertently had a hand in this, because The Prodigy was slated for February 8th. Escape Room was coming out, and there were a whole bunch of other psychological thrillers and horror films stacked up for January and February, so they bumped it to later in the year. They announced that original date, but then when they moved off of it, they never announced that fact. So everyone was operating under the assumption that it was opening February 1st, but that wasn’t the case.

In the opinion of this writer, Jacob’s Ladder remains one of the most underappreciated and overlooked horror movies ever made. Genre aficionados such as you and I may hold it in high regard, sure, but I’ve found it’s not as well known to your Average Joe.
So, even though Adrian Lyne’s classic from 1990 doesn’t get as much TV play as something from the Friday the 13th or A Nightmare on Elm Street franchises each October, it’s actually a highly influential film. I mean, not only have countless flicks taken visual cues from Jacob’s Ladder, but it also heavily inspired the Silent Hill series of video games. If you require evidence, go back and view the scene showing Tim Robbins’ trip to the hospital. Well, there’s that and various subtle references throughout a few of the games.

In today's unnecessary remake news, Bloody-Disgusting is confirming that Ld Entertainment's remake of the insane 1990 psychological horror thriller, Jacobs Ladder is still happening. In fact, it may end up being released in theaters on February 1st, 2019. That date could change, though.
The original film followed a haunted Vietnam War veteran who "attempts to discover his past while suffering from a severe case of dissociation. To do so, he must decipher reality and life from his own dreams, delusion, and perception of death."
The film was first announced in 2013 and Midnight Meat Train scribe Jeff Buhler was taking it on. It was initially explained that the plan was to make the remake "something more akin to an homage and not mimic the original." The remake will "contemporize the story with new situations and characters but still maintain a story that examines issues and poses existential questions."

How It Ends is in no vague terms an absolute bore of cinematic expression. It is two hours of drab, tiresome moments with sparse originality that I can only describe as torture. I’d even suggests the title itself a sick meta/ self-aware pun at the expense of its unaware audience. As you may have surmised, How It Ends is explicitly horrifying to endure.
Performances are monotone and one-note, leaving little to no development of engagement available to connect with the characters present. A strikingly bungled feature on the films part considering the impact needed to convey the terrifying scenario unfolding with the so-called tense atmosphere and lukewarm horror the characters must progress through, yet with insufficient character development...

"There's a lot to be afraid of out there..." Netflix has debuted an official trailer for an indie film titled How It Ends, the latest from filmmaker David M. Rosenthal. The plot involves a desperate father trying to return home to his pregnant wife after a mysterious apocalyptic event turns everything to chaos. Theo James stars, along with Forest Whitaker, Kat Graham, Kerry Bishé, Mark O'Brien, Nicole Ari Parker, and Grace Dove. This pretty much came out of nowhere, so I'm not sure what to make of it. It seems like there's some cool things going on here, but I really don't have a good feeling. It's worth a look just to check out another Netflix film. A remake of the 1990 film, Jacob's Ladder, provides a modern update to a classic horror tale.
This may be one of my flashbacks, but a Jacob's Ladder remake is in the works from the same people who might bring you a remake of Angel Heart. Studio Ld Entertainment promises that Jacob’s Ladder will be an homage to the classic 1990 supernatural thriller, rather than a remake, meaning that it will take place in the present and deal with contemporary issues.
Jacob’s Ladder will be directed by David M. Rosenthal. The screenplay was written by Jeff Buhler (The Midnight Meat Train) and Sarah Thorp.
