Galt MacDermot, who composed the hit Broadway musicals Hair and Two Gentlemen of Verona, died Monday, a day before his 90th birthday. His death was confirmed to Playbill by his granddaughter, though a cause of death was not revealed.
After cutting records in the early part of the Sixties, including the Grammy-winning “African Waltz” for saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, the Montreal-born composer moved to New York. Upon meeting lyricists Gerome Ragni and James Rado, he began setting their writings to music and the trio eventually created Hair, which opened off-Broadway in...

Security at the Marriott hotel in Detroit didn’t exactly say “cheers” to Obie Trice during a 2017 visit, the rapper says — and now he’s suing, alleging that he was racially profiled and tortured during the visit. According to the suit, Trice visited the hotel with friends in April 2017, and the rapper accompanied a female in the party as she sought out a bathroom. However, Trice alleges, hotel security “targeted and profiled” Trice “based on Plaintiff’s race and color,” and was told that the restrooms for hotel guests. With his track record as an acclaimed solo rapper and member of N.W.A, you'd think Ice Cube's hip-hop instincts would surpass those of daytime talk show host Ellen DeGeneres. But the competition was stiff Wednesday on Ellen as the pair squared off in "Rap Song or Wrong Song?", attempting to assess the authenticity of rap song titles.
Cube started off strong, correctly selecting "Rap Song" for Yasiin Bey's (fka Mos Def) "Ms. Fat Booty." But his success rate plummeted from there, as he issued false answers for "Get Money,...

The "Shady Xv" 15th anniversary compilation album isn't officially billed as a new Eminem album, but new music from Slim Shady is all over it. The comp has one side that's 15 previously released Shady Records tunes, plus a bonus track that's the original demo of Eminem's great "Lose Yourself." The other side is all-new tracks, with Eminem leading or featuring on at least 10 out of 12 of the songs. Em fronts the songs "Shady Xv," "Die Alone" featuring Kobe, previously released "Guts Over Fear" featuring Sia, "Right for Me" and "Fine Line." He's also part of the D12 crew, rhymes with Royce da 5'9" in Bad Meets Evil and is part of a group track "Detroit Vs. Everybody" that co-leads with Royce, Big Sean, Danny Brown, DeJ Loaf and Trick Trick. The full tracklist to both discs are below. Eminem executive produced the set. "Shady Xv" is out on Nov.

Donald Glover’s rap alter ego, Childish Gambino, will release his new album, “Because The Internet,” this winter. The video preview for track, “Yaphet Kotto,” features Gambino floating face down in a pool, aka William Holden in the opening of “Sunset Boulevard,” as we hear him rapping about the criticisms he’s received (“worst rapper to ever spit on an open mic”), while the "Community" star is busy bring in the dough and the ladies. It also name drops other artists including Obie Trice, Wiz Khalifa and Erykah Badu. At the end of the 90-second clip appear the words “Because The Internet” and “Winter...

For only the second time in history, all of the top six albums on the Billboard 200 are debuts. Led by Dave Matthews Band's Away From the World at No. 1, the top six are new arrivals for the first time since the Oct. 11, 2003, chart. That week, OutKast snared its first No. 1 with Speakerboxx/The Love Below. The duo's smash album was followed by new entries at Nos. 2-6 by, respectively, Dave Matthews' Some Devil, Limp Bizkit's Results May Vary, R. Kelly's The R. in R&B Collection, Obie Trice's Cheers and Nickelback's The Long Road. On this

It’s been a long time since Obie Trice was rapping in local competitions around Detroitand 21 years on, he is releasing his third studio album. With a huge wait of 6 years, there is no doubt that Bottoms Up has been highly-anticipated by his fans for years, but judging on the success of his last two albums (both top 10 on the Billboard 200) it has a lot to live up to.
Originally from Michigan in the Us, Obie Trice first came to the attention of the masses after he was signed to Shady Records in 2000. He is probably best known for his trademark saying, “Obie Trice – real name, no gimmicks”, which most people may recognise as the opening line of Without Me from The Eminem Show. "Just call me Richard / 'cause I'm a dick." So goes the refrain to "Richard," Obie Trice's new song with Eminem and production from Statik Selektah. For all the dickishness of the track, it's got a pretty fun, summer-oriented beat that very may well blow up during the hotter days this year. Let's just say it was these Detroit rappers' own way of wishing you "happy start of spring" this week. "Richard" is off of Trice's "Bottoms Up," due on April 3, a release date that has been often moved around. It could have to do, in part, with the fact...

"Difficult," Eminem's tribute to his fallen friend and D12 member Proof, leaked online in December.
The track has now been rechristened "Dudey" and features former Shady Records artist Obie Trice on the chorus.
The revamped track arrived online on Friday (February 11) and still features Em's somber rhymes. A hook has been added, however, on which Trice helps Eminem eulogize the Detroit rapper, born DeShaun Holton, who was murdered in 2006. Trice's words add grace to Em's sobering rhymes.
"I drop a tear in the rhyme, the day you find it is the day I stop missing DeShaun," Obie chimes in on the chorus. "Holton, it was written, it was woven for a soldier to leave so suddenly, got me wide open/ I could die, take my soul,...

Two weeks ago, MTV News crowned Kanye West as the 2010 Man of the Year. However, a lot of extremely vocal fans thought that the individual picked for the number two position — rapper Eminem — should have been in first place by miles. There is an excellent case to be made for Slim Shady, as he had a tremendously successful year that saw him drop one of his most critically-acclaimed and commercially successful albums of his career (Recovery is on track to be the best-selling album of 2010), top the charts twice with two killer singles ("Not Afriad" and the Rihanna-assisted "Love the Way You Lie"), co-headline the biggest concerts of the year (the extremely well-received Home and Home shows with Jay-z) and re-ignite the debate over whether or not he is the greatest rapper of all time (an argument that will continue ad infinitum).

We’ve been sitting on our hands with this one for a few weeks (we actually were on set so stay tuned for that report soon), but given the buzz currently surrounding filmmaker Tim Sullivan’s latest splat-stick effort "I Was A Teenage Werebear" (his recently wrapped segment of the anthology film Chillerama; see our exclusive on that here), we thought it time to mention his involvement with the decidedly different-in-tone Orlando Entertainment feature, the grisly shock "doc" Cut/Print.
Long known for the outrageous horror-comedy films 2001 Maniacs and 2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams (as well as his hosting duties on the VH1 "Scream Queens 2" reality series), Sullivan has shifted gears in his collaboration with lead filmmaker Vince Orlando, producer Jeff Burton and director Nathaniel Nose. Last week, the readers of the MTV Newsroom Blog established that Eminem's best team-up with a female artist was "Love the Way You Lie" (his current massive single featuring an assist by Rihanna) and that "No Love" (his team-up with Lil Wayne from Recovery) was the best tag-team effort from an Eminem album. But by the end of the week, we blew the doors open to decide exactly which track represents Eminem's best work with another artist. Any guest spot, posse cut or featured verse was fair game, and after hundreds of votes, the readers decided that "Renegade" — Eminem's mind-blowing hook-up with Jay-z from 2001's The Blueprint — is his best work with someone else.
It's no surprise that "Renegade" was a winner, as it's an incredibly high-quality collaboration between two of the greatest MCs in the hip-hop game today. It scored 35 percent of the vote, easily distancing itself from "Forgot About Dre,...

Over the past few days, MTV Newsroom Blog readers helped establish that Eminem's "Love the Way You Lie" is his best collaboration with a female artist (narrowly beating out his team-up with Dido for "Stan") and that his best tag-team with a male singer or rapper is "No Love" (the Lil Wayne-assisted track from Recovery). Though neither of the polls in question are scientific, they do drive home the fact that Recovery is one of the strongest in Eminem's career and one of the best of the year.
Both of those polls have been limited to songs that appear on proper Eminem albums, but as many of the commenters have pointed out, Slim Shady is constantly in demand for collaborations on other albums. So now it's time to open up the poll to all Eminem collaborations. Any time Eminem has been on a song with another artist, its a reasonable track to consider.

Despite an incredible surge in downloads and airplay, Eminem's "Love the Way You Lie" was not able to topple Katy Perry's "California Gurls" from its perch atop the Billboard Hot 100. Slim Shady and collaborator Rihanna will have to settle for another week in second place. Recovery remains the top album in the country by leaps and bounds, and with no high-profile albums dropping this week, Eminem is sure to remain at the top of the chart for at least another seven days, further extending his incredible run this summer.
If Mr. Mathers wants to keep the momentum going, perhaps he should release "No Love," his team-up with Lil Wayne from Recovery, as his next single, as the MTV Newsroom blog readers have declared it his greatest collaboration. "No Love" took the top spot easily with nearly 42 percent of the vote. The songs behind it shook out in a fascinating fashion,...

With the release of Recovery, Eminem has unleashed another batch of killer songs into the universe. As an album, it ranks right up there with his best work and contains at least three songs that feel like instant classics. For anybody arriving at Slim Shady's party a little late, a walk through his past work is essential, but the hits compilation Curtain Call isn't necessarily the place to start. For one, it doesn't include anything from Relapse or Recovery, which means that Eminem's comeback isn't represented at all. It also doesn't contain any of Em's most valuable guest spots, posse cuts or one-offs, making it woefully incomplete.
So just as we did with that new Oasis greatest hits album that hit stores last week, let's take a look at what songs we would keep, collect and kick to the curb on "Curtain Call."

Despite the fact that they always have bandmates, posses or entourages around them at all times, musicians tend to be singular entities. The ego required to command a stage, construct a compelling public persona and manipulate the emotional response of thousands of people at a time tends to be alienating, which is why there are so many lone wolves out there (and why so many groups break up). But every once in a while, a pair of superstars will come together for a collaboration that immediately becomes historic even before anything is executed. Such is the case with Jay-z and Eminem, who announced a pair of September shows that will take them to baseball stadiums in their respective hometowns. Slim Shady will headline the gig at Detroit's Comerica Park on September 2 while Jigga will be top-billed at Yankee Stadium in New York on September 13.
