Collecting 14 short stories from the most enigmatic, strange and absurd mangakas’, “Comics Underground Japan” offers a brief look at some of the most diverse and unique talent the country has to offer. Featuring creators such as Ebisu Yoshikazu (“The Pits of Hell“), Suehiro Marou (“The Laughing Vampire“) and Kazuichi Hanawa (“The Early Years“) the anthology acts as an all star collection embodying the punk rock spirit of the independent creators.
“Comics Underground Japan” acts to showcase a diverse group of talent, both well known in the west such as Hideshi Hino and Suehiro Marou and more obscure creators such as Muddy Wehara and Carol Shimoda. While each creator’s work is notably distinct, the collection does tie the creators together in various ways. Notably, many of these artists came to prominence in the cult publication “Garo” which showcased alternative talent. As a result, the collection conveys honor...

Japanese honorific society and manga technical prowess is turned on its head in the collection of stories from one of the purveyors and prominent figures in the “Heta-Uma” movement. “Pits of Hell” collects nine stories from Ebisu Yoshikazu, stories soaked in violence, social distress, gambling and deconstruction of surface-level morality, in an bid to explore the devious nature of humanity.
To best describe the work of Yoshikazu, it is imperative to briefly touch on the lesser known movement in Japanese manga known as “Heta-Uma”. This movement originated in the 70’s within the pages of Garo magazine, a publication that voice to many experimental and mature creators, such as Suehiro Maruo (“Laughing Vampire“) and Kazuichi Hanawa (“The Early Years“). The term loosely translates as ‘bad but good’, defining work that was poorly drawn but with a greater emphasis on working in an aesthetic that conveyed excitement while favoring more explicit material.

A woman with twisted facial features scours the wasteland to rob corpses of valuables, but eventually she is found and murdered and buried. However, the earth rejects her body and she is reborn as a vampire. Centuries later, she comes across a young man she decides to make her apprentice. The two work together to keep a steady flow of victims, and eventually have to face off against other vampires.
The artwork of Maruo is undeniably stunning, and the manga is one of the finer showcase of his work. In particular, the way he catches the motion of character through layering facial features is an intriguing way to capture rapid movement. Many of the panel transitions capture kinetic transitions that are seldom conveyed with such bravado, as in the pages of “The Laughing Vampire”. Maruo has largely become a figure more established by visual aesthetics over storytelling here in the West,...

Japanese mangaka Kazuichi Hanawa remains largely unknown here in the west, but his influence can be seen across horror and mature themed manga (With work going back as far as early 70’s). “The Early Years” collects various stories ranging in composition, but focused around macabre/mature themes. Nothing is off limits within the pages of this collection, which is bound to insult the senses; however, hidden within the filth is some of the most visually engaging work within its respective genres.
The quality of the tales play a secondary role to the artwork in many regards. The collection quality is certain to be divisive in its different approaches to horror and erotica, with the first several chapters offering up stories of sexual deviancy in a nauseating fashion. Within framing these stories as a parody of militarism and Japanese culture at the time, helps soften the blow a bit, although it...
