Putting a wash on. Attending a school reunion. Making a lasagne. Just some of the things you might have been doing instead of watching TV in 2022. Whatever kept you away from the box, it was a mistake. What you should have been doing is catching up on the below – a selection of British sci-fi, supernatural drama, crime thrillers, and comedy. Because what’s better than the comfortable joy of watching fictional characters live their complicated lives, taking all the risks and making all the mistakes? Almost nothing. Unless you’re the sort of person who puts double cream and three types of cheese in your lasagne, in which case, carry on, you’re doing the Lord’s work.

BritBox International, the streamer run by the BBC and ITV, has hired former Hulu and CBS executive Robert Schildhouse.
Schildhouse joins as EVP, North America and Gm, Group Marketing Services. Based in New York, he reports to BritBox International CEO Reemah Sakaan.
His hire comes after the company restructured earlier this summer. The move saw it move to a two-region structure, which brought with it promotions for Moira Hogan and Neale Dennett, where it signaled its intention to hire a U.S-based Gm.
He will oversee the streaming service in the U.S. and Canada and lead its centralized global marketing team.
Schildhouse joined Hulu prior to its launch in 2008 and becoming leader of its content acquisition team. He then joined CBS Global Distribution Group, where he was EVP, Digital Licensing and Distribution and later EVP, Business Development.

When Karen Pirie lies down on the job, this detective isn’t loafing. She’s busy concentrating, trying not to scream in frustration at the chauvinistic bosses who’ve assigned her a perplexing 25-year-old cold case with little confidence she’ll solve it. They should know better. Mystery fans already do, if they’re familiar with the work of prolific Scottish novelist Val McDermid, whose Tony Hill series inspired six seasons of Wire in the Blood. Let’s hope for similar results for BritBox’s Karen Pirie, featuring a scrappy up-and-comer who erupts in fury whenever it’s suggested she only got this case—the 1996 murder of a barmaid that’s the subject of a nagging podcast—because of her gender. Though she’s the first to admit, in an instantly endearing and self-deprecating aside, that it’s “not the greatest time to be called Karen.” The prime suspects in the case,...

Good news for the tourist industry in St Andrew’s, the photogenic Scottish university town previously made famous by a prince and an amateur catwalk model named Kate Middleton. Now it’s got its very own eponymous TV detective series – Karen Pirie. Just like in Bath, Oxford, Bristol, Jersey, Shetland and countless other real and semi-fictional picturesque locations with infeasibly high rates of homicide, soon visitors from all over the world will be able to come and see where celebrated decapitations, drownings and poisonings didn’t actually take place.
The first killing in this new venture splats onto our screens with the disembowelling of a barmaid, her body dumped in the grounds of the cathedral – about as shocking a femicide conceivable. Yet, by contrast, and unusually for a regional detective series, there is nothing unusual or idiosyncratic about its hero. The prosaically named Karen Pirie (Lauren Lyle) is a young...

(Credit: Courtesy of BritBox) Described as a young Scottish detective with a quick mouth, and a tenacious desire to uncover the truth, Karen Pirie is the perfect person to pursue such cases. The case in question being explored in this series is a murder that took place in St. Andrews 25 years ago. BritBox is hoping to carve out a niche for Anglo-centric programming in the U.S. and its boss has taken a particularly British swipe at rival streamers for their attempts.
Opening the streaming service’s virtual TCA panel, CEO Reemah Sakaan took aim.
“While other streamers have definitely discovered the quality and power of the British genre and in recent years, they’ve been originating some great British shows, they are accessories and not part of the core offering,” she said.
“The streamers are well intentioned. However, they definitely lack a little of what we would define as the essence of British, you might hear the accent see the settings and costumes, but in reality, they’re what we would call British-ish. BritBox is gearing up for its next detective drama as the hub for top-tier British entertainment welcomes Karen Pirie to its fall lineup. The ITV commission stars Outlander‘s Lauren Lyle as the titular detective who is based on the character from Val McDermid’s best-selling novels. Ahead of the show’s upcoming debut, BritBox unveiled a first look during their TCA presentation. Best known for playing headstrong Marsali Fraser in Starz‘s hit, Lyle is unrecognizable as the rough-around-the-edges detective tasked with solving a cold case from the ’90s. And though it may be a far cry from the 18th-century world where Outlander is set, that fire behind Marsali can be found in Karen Pirie as well. “It was a part that I felt suited me quite well,” Lyle recalls about her first time hearing of the role. “I loved the script. It was so dynamic, so funny, and so dark.

Exclusive: ITV is adapting Val McDermid’s series of cold case investigations Karen Pirie from Harlots writer Emer Kenny and Bodyguard producer World Productions.
The British commercial broadcaster has ordered three, two-hour drama episodes of the adaptation, which is based on McDermid’s novel, The Distant Echo, the first in a series of best-selling novels about a young Scottish female detective set in the Scottish university town of St. Andrew’s.
Karen is a refreshingly normal and charmingly unfashionable young woman. While she is not slick or a maverick cop, her quick mouth and ingenuity make her an impressive investigator. Following her promotion to Police Scotland’s Historic Cases Unit, Karen is tasked with reopening the investigation into a murder that has been the subject of a provocative true crime podcast. When teenage barmaid Rosie Duff was stabbed to death in 1995, suspicion fell on the three drunken students who discovered her body.

Life and work of Iain Banks to be honoured at 30th festival, with Salman Rushdie, Margaret Atwood and Neil Gaiman also featuring in two-week event partnered by the Guardian
The life and works of the late Iain Banks will be celebrated by close friends including Ian Rankin and Val McDermid in a special event at this August's Edinburgh international book festival, for which the Guardian is media partner.
"Scotland and the world were rocked by his death last weekend," said Nick Barley, the festival director. "We'd been planning a celebration anyway as we're marking our 30th birthday, and his first novel, The Wasp Factory, was out in 1984. I spoke to him many times about what he'd like to do. He wanted to be there – sadly he can't be."
Instead, the event on the festival's closing Sunday will see Scottish authors including Rankin, McDermid and Ken MacLeod looking back over Banks's 29-year career.

Queen Elizabeth has been voted Britain's most powerful woman. The 86-year-old monarch topped a poll by BBC Radio 4 show 'Woman's Hour' in what was their first ever power list. The queen - who celebrated her Diamond Jubilee last year - beat Home Secretary Theresa May into second place while Ana Botin, CEO of Santander, UK was third. The list was put together by a judging panel that included former newspaper editor Eve Pollard, Tory MP Priti Patel, Labour peer Oona King and crime novelist Val McDermid. Eve said: 'Most women on our list have power because they have reached a place where they have control - of policy, of direction, of influence, of staff. 'The panel also included some...

The Fifty Shades of Gray phenomenon has shaken the literary scene in a heap of ways: Concerns of cultural backlash over the objectification of women. Lurid delight that kink has been diluted, prettied up, and packaged in soft language enough to be devoured by the mainstream. Despair that yet another bestseller of dubious literary merit has swept away the American market.
Love it, hate it, or simply want to ignore it, you have to admit that Fifty Shades of Grey has cast light on an important literary talent. Author E. L. James’ husband, Niall Leonard, scored a three-book crime thriller contract.
And while I freely admit that Leonard’s hearty lit deal is linked to his wife’s mega success, a recent look into his career by the Herald Sun reveals a more surprising factor. He damn well deserves to be in print.
I’d expected the bio on Niall...

In The Library Book, published for National Libraries Day on 4 February, twenty-three of the UK’s most outstanding writers describe libraries real or imagined, past, present, and future – why they matter and to whom.
Recognising that without libraries we would not have the writers of today and tomorrow, The Library Book’s contributors are all donating their royalties to The Reading Agency, the independent charity working to inspire more people to read more.
Included in the book are Anita Anand, Julian Barnes, Bella Bathurst, Alan Bennett, Michael Brooks, James Brown, Ann Cleeves, Stephen Fry, Seth Godin, Susan Hill, Tom Holland, Hardeep Singh Kohli, Lucy Mangan, Val McDermid, China Miéville, Caitlin Moran, Kate Mosse, Julie Myerson, Bali Rai, Lionel Shriver, Karin Slaughter, Zadie Smith and Nicky Wire.

As Ed mentioned in the Meme, you can stream Stevie Nicks' new album "In Your Dreams" online, and it'll be officially released on May 3rd. Below you can see the final version of the music video for the first single "Secret Love." She looks smashing ... even if the twirl has slowed down a bit.
I was on a high listening to the album, and then I saw this. I felt like Jennifer Connolly when she walked in the baby's room and saw the Goblin King. Reality Blurred's Andy Denhart talked to Real World housemate Dustin Zito about his homophobic comments, now that the "big reveal" has happened on the show. The 23rd Annual Lambda Literary Awards will honor three-time Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Edward Albee and Gold Dagger Award-winning crime fiction writer Val McDermid for their outstanding literary contributions, Thursday,...

Every now and then a mini-series comes along that just sucks you in by the sheer force of its spellbinding story. Such is the case with the sensational British mini-series Place of Execution, airing Stateside in a two-episode format that begins this Sunday as part of PBS' Masterpiece Contemporary. From its haunting opening minutes to the truly and horrifically shocking final scenes, Place of Execution is a thriller which will remain with you long after the closing credits have rolled. Anchored by three incredible performances, Place of Execution--written by Patrick Harbison and Val McDermid (and based on the latter's novel) and directed by Daniel Percival--takes place both in the present-day as well as in 1963 rural England as two very different investigators explore the disappearance of a 13-year-old girl who vanished without a trace one winter afternoon in 1963. Told in two overlapping and interlocking plots, the story telescopes outwards from...

British newspaper The Independent has published their 10th Annual Pink List of the 101 most influential lesbian and gay people in Britain.
In a thoughtful introduction to the list, the writer questioned if the list was even necessary anymore now that Lgbt people have made such great personal, professional and social strides.
The Independent wrote: ...is the list anachronistic? Is it patronizing to gay people? We feared it might be — and went in search of a leading gay or lesbian figure to say so. None of those we contacted wanted to. Their verdict? The Pink List remains indispensable, a celebration of a community that is integral to the British way of life.
Topping the list this year is Peter Mandelson (First Secretary of State; Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills; Lord President of the Council), and we don't see the first woman on the list until number 5, U.S.
