VTubers have cemented themselves as one of the most significant groups in the contemporary creator economy. Over the past year, virtual creators have emerged as replacements for human stars, made billionaires out of their managers, and attracted interest from major brands.
In December 2023, those pixelated personalities will get their very own award show. That’s when a celebration called VTuber Awards will go live.
The VTuber Awards will be hosted by Filian, a VTuber with approximately 600,000 Twitch followers. Filian will emcee the festivities on her personal account, where she has previously collaborated with big shots like Twitch CEO Dan Clancy.
For the VTuber Awards, Filian is teaming up with Mythic Talent, a full-service management firm affiliated with gaming organization Otk. Mythic launched earlier this year, with Otk co-owners Asmongold and TipsOut serving as two of its founders.

That’s a wrap on the 12th annual Streamy Awards, which presented nearly 50 awards and honors to 2022’s top creators.
After going virtual in 2020 and 2021, the Streamys (produced by Tubefilter and dick clark productions) returned to Irl this year, and to its home turf: the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles.
2022’s awards were party rocked by master of ceremonies Airrack, who just so happened to walk away with two nods of his own: top First Person creator as well as a Creator Honor, which we’ll talk more about below. The show was also streamed exclusively from Airrack’s YouTube channel—a first for the Streamys, which normally broadcasts from its own channel.

A little over a year ago, YouTube dropped its first original podcast, The Upload: The Rise of the Creator Economy.
Now, it’s debuting another creator-focused show—and this time, it’s got video components. Also, it’s hosted by MatPat.
Like & Describe is YouTube’s self-dubbed “official trends podcast,” and will “[bring] listeners the little-known stories behind the biggest YouTube trends,” the platform says.
The show’s first episode—uploaded today to YouTube’s own YouTube channel, plus on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and other podcast-listening platforms—is a 20-minute dive into the rise of VTubers.
If you somehow haven’t seen VTubers basically everywhere yet, just know they’re becoming an integral part of the creator sphere—so integral that this year’s Streamy Awards added a VTuber category with noms for streamers CodeMiko, Ironmouse, Nyanners, Veibae, and Zentreya.
YouTube says VTubers now “collectively attract 1.5 billion views every month,” though...

G4 is shutting down — again.
Comcast Spectacor, the cable and entertainment giant’s sports and esports division, told G4 TV employees Sunday that the gaming network was shutting down effective immediately. The decision has resulted in 45 staff members of G4 TV losing their jobs.
In a memo, obtained by Variety, Comcast Spectacor chairman and CEO Dave Scott cited low viewership and said the network had not achieved “sustainable financial results.”
“Over the past several months, we worked hard to generate that interest in G4, but viewership is low and the network has not achieved sustainable financial results,” Scott wrote. “This is certainly not what we hoped for, and, as a result, we have made the very difficult decision to discontinue G4’s operations, effective immediately.“
Comcast Spectacor in July 2020 said it would reboot G4 TV, which NBCUniversal shut down in 2013 (after the network first launched in 2002). Russell Arons, the former Warner Bros.,...

The latest swath of data from the streaming industry confirms a truth that many creators already knew: If you want to become a star on a platform like Twitch or YouTube Gaming, it helps to be male.
According to a new report from Stream Hatchet, 99 of the top 100 streamers are men. The only woman to crack that ranking was Kaitlyn Siragusa, who has attracted 5.7 million Twitch followers with the seductive streams on her Amouranth channel. Stream Hatchet's findings confirm opinions that have been expressed by streamers of all genders. Earlier this year, popular creator Mizkif suggested that women have an easier time breaking out on Twitch, but they eventually run into a "glass ceiling" that limits the growth of their channels.
The male-dominated nature of the streaming industry's upper echelon is only becoming more pronounced. The June 2022 State of the Stream report, published by StreamElements, reveals that men are breaking...

A 17-month-old talent management firm has made some major additions to its roster.
Underscore Talent, which already works with top digital creators like CelinaSpookyBoo, Vlad & Niki, and Code Miko, has signed four more prominent videomakers: Beauty star Tati Westbrook, gamer Justaminx, and TikTokers Jeenie Weenie and the Splash Twinz.
Underscore was formed in January 2021 out of a partnership between Reza Izad, Dan Weinstein, and Michael Green. The three execs previously served as three of the co-founders of the digital network Studio71. Though much of Underscore's focus has been on family-oriented creators (it even hired a former Mattel exec as a talent manager last year), its new signees reach a wide range of audiences. In a press release, Underscore noted that Westbrook, who has 12.5 million followers across her social media platforms, is "one of the world’s most-watched beauty reviewers on YouTube by women ages 18-44, with more than 1.5 billion views.
