Fathom Events and Roadside Attractions are teaming up to release Madeleine Gavin’s Sundance award-winning documentary “Beyond Utopia.”
The film takes viewers on a harrowing journey as one family risks everything to escape from North Korea. The pact comes after the film made its world premiere in the U.S. documentary competition section at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where it won the doc audience award.
While the film attracted plenty of interest from distribution companies following its debut in Park City, the market slowdown has led to deals taking longer than usual to nail down.
Roadside acquired domestic rights to “Beyond Utopia” and will release the film theatrically in select markets later this fall, thereby qualifying the docu for Oscar consideration. Fathom Events will release the film in more than 600 theaters nationwide during a special two-night only event on Oct. 23-24.

In February 2022, a battle was brewing between two Sundance factions over the documentary “Jihad Rehab,” a film that earned critical raves during its run at the virtual festival a month earlier but was being targeted by a small group of vocal detractors. The two sides — festival programmers and non-programmers — converged to discuss the spiraling controversy over the Meg Smaker-helmed film, which depicts a handful of Guantanamo detainees who have been released from the U.S. prison into a 12-month Saudi de-radicalization program.
Sources describe a knockdown, drag-out showdown between programming director Kim Yutani, defending the film, and some members of the institute, who hadn’t watched “Jihad Rehab” but wanted to placate those outraged over its inclusion in the lineup. The film’s critics took aim at Smaker, namely for being a non-Arab director and potentially endangering the film’s subjects while reinforcing stereotypes of Muslims as terrorists. Their...

Exclusive: Cinema Guild has picked up U.S. rights to the documentary Sansón and Me, directed by Rodrigo Reyes (499), which won Best Film at Sheffield DocFest in June after world premiering in Tribeca. Reyes’ latest feature emerged from his day job as a Spanish criminal interpreter in a small town in California, through which he met a young man named Sansón, an undocumented Mexican immigrant who was sentenced to life in prison without parole. With no permission to interview him, Sansón and Reyes worked together over the course of a decade, using hundreds of letters as inspiration for recreations of Sansón’s childhood — featuring members of his own family. Joe Pesci has signed on to star in Pete Davidson’s upcoming Peacock comedy series “Bupkis,” Variety has learned.
Davidson will star in the series along with Pesci and previously announced cast member Edie Falco. The show was ordered to series at Peacock in April.
“Bupkis” is a half-hour comedy that is loosely based on Davidson’s real life. Falco will star as Davidson’s mother with Pesci now set to play Davidson’s grandfather.
This marks just the second regular television role of Pesci’s career. Prior to this, he starred in the short-lived NBC series “Half Nelson” in 1985. Pesci is best known for his film career, in particular his collaborations with Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro. In a return to acting — and television — Oscar winner Joe Pesci will star opposite Pete Davidson and Edie Falco in Bupkis, Peacock’s upcoming half-hour live-action comedy that tells a heightened, fictionalized version of Davidson‘s life.
The high-profile casting completes Davidson’s on-screen family, with Pesci playing his grandfather and Falco his mother. For Pesci, who is a series regular, this marks only the second TV show; he previously headlined the short-lived 1985 ABC detective comedy-drama Half Nelson.
Pesci, who has earned three Oscar nominations for his dramatic roles in Martin Scorsese’s Raging Bull, Goodfellas, for which he won, and The Irishman, is also known for his comedic performances in such classics as Home Alone and My Cousin Vinny.
Bringing Pesci back to the screen is a major coup for Davidson, who is co-writing and executive produces Bupkis in addition to starring. In 1999, Pesci announced that he would largely...

Apple showed its might, winning an auction for worldwide rights to the Ed Sheeran documentary “Songwriter” following its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.
The tech giant paid somewhere in the low- to mid-seven figures, people close to the deal confirmed to TheWrap.
“Songwriter,” directed by Sheeran’s cousin Murray Cummings, mainly follows the musician’s 2016 hiatus between touring his second album, “Multiply,” and writing his third album, “Divide.”

The film premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in February and is screening this month at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. “Songwriter” hasn’t been reviewed well, overall.
The Guardian said of the film: “Ed Sheeran is now the subject of this diverting but pretty incurious promo-video-style cheerleading documentary about the build-up to the release of Sheeran’s album, ‘Divide.'”
Apple, which has more than $280 billion cash on reserve, announced last year its plans to pony up $1 billion to invest in Hollywood content. The documentary was picked up by Apple Music.

With former Sony execs Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg running the show, Apple has already brokered deals for a morning-show series from Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, as well as a TV series from “La La Land” director Damien Chazelle.

The financial collapse of 2008 was brought about by many factors – including governmental deregulation and lack of proper oversight – but make no mistake, there were plenty of flat-out crooks involved. And were it not for the staggering scale of Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff’s deception, Marc Dreier and his $750 million fraud would likely be the name most lastingly associated with American white collar crime. Filmed over the last two months of Dreier’s house arrest, leading up to his prison sentencing, “Unraveled” unfolds in unique fashion, offering up a rare first person reflection on scamming of this sort. Even more unique, however, is the fact that the film’s director, Marc Simon (no relation to this [ Read More ]...

The well packaged documentary “Unraveled” provides a fascinating look at the psychology and rationalizations of such a criminal mastermind, unfolding in a series of reflective interviews over the last two months of Dreier’s house arrest prior to criminal sentencing, in the gilded cage of his Upper East Side penthouse. Putting a human face on the criminality of the financial crisis, Unraveled explores the downfall of Marc Dreier, a prominent Manhattan attorney who was arrested in 2009 for embezzling hundreds of millions of dollars from hedge funds. The documentary places us in the “guilded prison” of Dreier’s upper East Side apartment during his 60-day house arrest. In that time, he is interviewed by none other than one of his victims, Marc Simon, who, in addition to being an Oscar-nominated filmmaker, formerly worked as a lawyer at Dreier’s law firm, Dreier L.L.P.
You wouldn’t know that from the film, however, as Simon refrains from including his personal commentary. Unraveled derives the bulk of its narration from Dreier himself. After 30 years as an attorney, Dreier was by all standards (except his own) successful: he had apartments in Los Angeles and New York, art by Marc Rothko and Andy Warhol,...

There’s basically no chance on Earth that a new documentary from Werner Herzog wouldn’t be acquired by somebody, but I am a little surprised that it happened before the film even made its debut at Tiff. A press release announces that the film, Into the Abyss, has been acquired by Sundance Selects for North American distribution. (The original title was Gazing into the Abyss: A Tale of Death, a Tale of Life, but it seems to have been cut down for the sake of brevity.)
Focusing on three death row inmates, two men and one woman, we’ve heard some (unpleasant) details on the subject matter, while interview clips surfaced online. It sounds like he’s really going to examine this without shying away from the worst aspects, which he should absolutely do; it needs to present the truth of the matter, not a lighter version. I’m...

While the media were busy dissecting the biggest Ponzi scheme in U.S. corporate history courtesy of Bernie Madoff, others around the country were also flouting (and allegedly flouting) the system and breaching (and allegedly breaching) their duties to their clients.
“Unraveled” reveals the lesser-known case against Mark Dreier, an attorney and “philanthropist” charged with wire fraud, money laundering and other charges. In what amounts to a fascinating study of greed and motivation told from within an intimate series of exchanges, director Marc Simon allows Dreier to share his account of the events that transpired.

The Los Angeles Film Festival has announced the world premiere of Richard Linklater's Bernie as the opening night film for the 2011 festival.
The film will kick off the festival on June 16 at Regal Cinemas Stadium 14 at L.A. Live. It is written by Skip Hollandsworth and director Linklater and stars Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine, and Matthew McConaughey.
The film follows a beloved mortician (Black) from a small Texas town, even winning over the town's richest, meanest widow (MacLaine). Even after Bernie commits a horrible crime, people still will not utter a bad word against him.
"We're thrilled to be opening the Festival with the world premiere of this delicious black comedy - a treat from one of the most original and exciting voices in independent film, Richard Linklater," said Festival director Rebecca Yeldham. "With its fabulous all-star cast, Bernie is a perfect stage setter for the incredible line-up of...
